3.5 Bottle at puttetjes. Clear dark brown with white head. Sweet malts, caramel, rauchmalz, leathery, bready, roasted chestnuts. Over medium sweet and moderate bitter. Medium body and soft carbonation.
3.2 Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Clear reddish brown with beige head. Caramel, quite some smoke, earthy dead leaves, swimming pool, bready, ash, light 🐐 goat, dried plums. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with oily feel. Meh.
3.6 Bottle in Seattle. Modest offwhite foam, dark schwarz brown body. Coppery malt and smoke nose, medium richness. Moderately sweet body, a bit light in texture, with a nice smoke component. Light metallic bitterness, great drying chocolate malt finish. Quite nice.
3.1 Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is smoky, earthy hop, wheat, slight sweetness, dark fruit. Appearance is brown, light tan head, clear. Taste is smoke, corn, earthy hop, roasty, some fruit, wheat, lighter than expected. Mouthfeel is light body, light crisp carbonation, watery, smoky earthy fruity wheat aftertaste. Overall, it's ok. Not to the echelon of other Smoked offerings but certainly not offensive. Just lacking depth.
3.5 Bottle shared at a tasting at troubles' place. Bought at the Brauhaus. Clear brown with a white head. Smoke and some rubber in the nose, bitter, smoky and slightly sweet in the mouth. Light body, mild smoky finish.
2.7 At Dror's place, pours brown with a beige head, aroma of fruits, caramel, smoked malt, flavor is sweet with malt, smoked malt, medium bodied
3.6 Dark brown color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of smoked meat, campfire, & some caramel; Flavor of smoky sweet malt, caramel/toffee, grain, and some chocolate notes; Nice classic rachbier aroma - pretty decent & sessionable.
3.4 Dunkelbraun bis schwarz. Geruch stark rauchig.
3.4 Dark brown pour, fairly tall, chunky beige head. Aroma is smoke, damp grain, bread crust, roasted nuts and a bit of dark toffee. Flavor is sweet caramel and cooked apple up front, bread crust, earthy smoke, a hint of maple and some lightly fruity, floral hops. Slick entry, drying out fairly quick leaving a slightly chalky feel, pretty over carbonated. Pretty good stuff, lots of flavor for a malty 4.9% beer.
3.6 Klares dunkles rotbraun mit durchschnittlicher Schaumkrone. Malzig, rauchig, Schinken, Speck, etwas Karamell, sehr süffig.
3.7 Bottle from my father. Smoky and malty smell. Similar taste, sweet and light fruity with some caramel. Nice level of smoke in this one, wood smoke with some notes of smoked ham and hunting cabin.
4.5 Never heard of our noticed this beer before. 500mL swingtop, no date. Clear brown body, thick head, sticky lacing. Almost as beautiful as a lager can be. Aroma is deep and clean smoke, strong but not overwhelming. Just the most freshest, cleanest, yet simplest and rauchiest of smoke. Flavor is full smoke with clean and clear lagering. I have no idea what this beer was but it’s up there with Scherlenkerla.
3.3 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cake, toasted grain/bread), lightly hoppy (apricot), with notes of smoked meat, frosting. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. A little simple in the nose, but decent enough if a tad too sweet/cakey smelling. Kind of limp and overly sweet in the mouth, but drinkable. No off notes, but lacks the refinement and richness of better examples.
3.5 Any time is a good time for a German smoked beer. Göller’s Rauchbier pours brown with a light brown/grey head. Beautiful Rauchbier smoke aromatics redolent of bacon. As good as the aroma is it doesn’t quite translate into the flavor. The taste is more bready than smokey. It’s still nice. Very smooth feel although it can seem a bit thin. It’s refreshing and that isn’t always something you can say about a Rauchbier.
3.4 Bottle. A- Smoky, ham. A- Dark brown mahogany color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Ham brine, smoke, meaty, watery. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, meaty finish. O- Taste doesn’t live up to aroma and is a bit watery, but overall, not bad.
4.0 Bottle from Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is smoked ham, ham sandwich, dry smoked beef, dark breads. Taste is more subdued / composed / drinkable. Great aroma and easy drinking for a smoked beast.
3.5 Bottle. Pours clear tea amber with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of malt and yeast, with pronounced smoky notes. Bitter, hoppy flavour with smoky notes and sweetish touches of malt and yeast. Mild hints of bread. Bitter and smoky aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Well-balanced and enjoyable.
3.6 Aroma: smoked ham and sausage, some weak malty notes. Appearance: deep amber color and creamy head. Taste: smoked ham and sausage, thin malty backbone, low herbal bitterness, dry. Palate: low body and medium carbonation, smoky finish. Overall: really nice smoked beer, intensive smoky sausage notes.
3.3 Bottle. Pours is dark amber to brown with medium creamy beige head. Aroma of smoked malts, cheese, touch of bacon, light fruity and sirupy aroma. Taste is light sweet, light bitter, sirupy notes and smokey mouthfeel. Medium body, creamy to sticky texture, sirupy and light bitter finish. Overally nice and drinkable but with some artificial sirupy notes on tongue and nose as well.
3.0 American smoked ale pretty much. Bottle. Pour was copper brown and the head was thin to near nil. Aroma of smoke and caramel. Flavor followed, lacked complexity, but it was tasty and nice. Just not a great example of the style. Moderate body. Probably more sessionable than most rauchbiers.
3.1 Thin body and modest flavor. Aroma was decent. Clear brown color. Flip top bottle adds nothing but cost.
3.4 Dark brown rauchbier with a smoky bacon aroma, a malty caramel flavour with bacon undertone. The finish is rather light but this is a pleasant and tasty smoked beer.
4.5 This beer is an example of something that doesn’t have to be complex to be excellent. Although this doesn’t work so well with aromas as a simple aroma isn’t terribly impressive. Whereas, for flavor it’s basically more or less just malts and smoke, but with the carbonation and the subtleties of the yeast and the precise balancing of these qualities that yields mastership. Perfect finish.
3.9 500 ml bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Listed as 4.9% on the label. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of wood smoke, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, grass, light pepper, slight fruitiness, herbal/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/smoked malts and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big wood smoke, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, grass, light pepper, slight fruitiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of wood smoke, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/pepper, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/smoked malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with minimal yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very nice rauchbier style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready/smoked malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
3.3 Bottle. Pours dark amber to brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma was slightly smoky and aromatic. Flavor was malty sweet with smoked meat, caramel and had a hint of peat.
3.4 50 cl bottle.Dark amber with small head. Prosciutto chips aroma.Smooth smoked meat and malt flavour. Medium/ light body
3.5 Bottle at home. Deep dark pbrown pour fine one finger head. Nose smoked malt and some sarsaparilla. Tastes of sweet smoke, caramel, touch of hay, sarsaparilla, hint of soy. Smooth and medium bodied.
3.0 Look; fawn big head and copper clear body. Aroma; tar, peat, salted liquorice, faint floral notes. Taste; brown malts, peat, ham, some caramel, some grass - leading to a soft short finish. Normal texture and soft carbonation. Not complicated at all, but short finish. Not super-exciting. [50cl brown bottle 4.9%abv BB11-02-2016 Greetings to Bierothek in Bamberg DE, T@Ferie2015]
