Gordon Biersch Märzen

Gordon Biersch Märzen

Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. It was also the beer served at the Original Oktoberfest celebration, which originated as a wedding reception for the King Ludwig I and Maria Theresa. Bavaria was a very poor country and had little cause for celebration, so the King and Queen invited the entire population of Bavaria to the reception. They showed up that year and every year thereafter, and the event evolved into the modern day Oktoberfest. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.

3.0 12oz bottle on my daughters patio, 21st May 2016. Autumnal orange in colour, large off-white head. Malty molasses rule the nose and flavour of this sweet tasting brew. Decent enough even if it is on the sweet side of things.
3.1 An easy drinking example of this style. Nothing crazy or over the top, sweet malt with a hint of hop flavor. Nice beer.
3.8 5.8%ABV. Märzen. Tapped out deep amber. 18ºSRM. Nose has some sweet, alcoholic, phenolic aromas. Beery and just happy with the promise of a proper Munic welcome. There is some fresh nut aroma in the nose as well. Very very welcoming. Mouthfeel is soapy., Palate has ample roasted malt with dark wheat toast, caramel, toasted almonds and hazelnuts. Some raw walnut body, especially in the tail end of the palate. No hops. The finish is so very very pleasant and very smooth. For an airport tap, this was likely one of my more memorable experiences! Why? It had a full-bodied malty backbone, some clean bitter hops and enough alcohol to round off the entire palate with some faint stone fruit sweetness and fruitiness, Goes on Favorites List!
3.6 (En fût à Gordon Biersch Mission Valley San Diego): Des pommes cuites, de la terre humide et une veine caramélisée non déplaisante. Bien exécuté.
2.9 Tap @ Gordon Biersch, Taipei. Bright orange, reasonable head. Mild spicy toffee malt aroma. Big sweet malty flavour. Smooth with boiled sweet aftertaste. Too sweet & sickly for me.
3.3 On tap at Detroit airport. Caramel malts and sweet cookies. Different from the original German versions which tend to be ligjter. Its much darker, amber brown, and quite strong too. Dry and nutty, but very refreshing. More like a vienna lager than a marzen, but still enjoyable.
3.5 1/6 on a flight at the Glendale location. Clear copper colour with minimal head. Aroma of caramel, tangy sweetness, grass. Malt forward, light toffee flavors, grassy earthy hops in the background, dry finish. Not bad, on style, but forgettable.
3.7 On tap at the Atlanta brewpub. Served colder than ideal temperature. Look: deep amber body with excellent clarity and a creamy tan head. Aroma: mild mix of malts and hops, with notes of caramel. Flavor: follows the aroma. Very clean but a bit milder than ideal. Mouthfeel: near medium body and carbonation. Nicely smooth. Overall: Compares well to a bunch of Bavarian marzens I have had lately from a Xmas Advent beer calender.
3.5 Sampler from the flight of beers at the Washington, D.C. location Sweet and very fresh with a malty taste throughout.
3.1 It’s a really nice amber marzen. Color is nice red with a little brown. Aroma is malty. Taste is refreshing smooth and a touch of residual sugars. Caramel notes. Detroit airport. Tap
2.8 On tap at Gordon Biersch, Taipei. Clear light amber with a medium head. On the light side with malt, some fruit and caramel. Drinkable but nothing special.
1.9 Inoffensive with light crisp malt backbone and mild hops bitterness. Aroma of brown sugar and caramels. Thin white head and standard carbonation. From bottle
3.7 Good beer pours nice good head. Good caramel and malty flavors not bitter easy to drink.
3.0 12oz bottle pours a reddy brown color with a bit of head. Medium maltiness. Not a lot else.
3.0 270215. Deep golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma is fruit, malt, berries. Flavour is fruit, malt, berries, caramel, bread. Ordinary beer.
2.4 All in all not a bad take on the summer maerzen brew of the germans. pour is a nice solid dark color while the head is light, it tends to remain throughout the drink. Aroma is weak, but flavor is on point.
0.5 Drank in LAX . Amber color with white head. Aroma of sweet caramel. Taste follows sweet bread
2.3 The description says malt but I taste metallic. Really average and only sort-of drinkable.
3.2 Bottle at Carnival Tasting in Ulfborg 2015-02-27. Pale amber beer with an offwhite head. Fruity, malty aroma with berries notes. Similar flavour with some spicy and grassy notes.
2.9 Bottle. Clean Amber with a medium head. Aroma is sweet malt. Flavour is bready malt, a little caramel, hay finish.
3.2 [ As Gordon Biersch Märzen ]. Clear medium orange amber color with a small to average, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, bread, hay, sweet malt, caramel. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration, sweet malt, bread, caramel. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. 3.2 Glass at the brewpub in Tempe AZ. Dark amber pour, nice head. Full rich body, gentle sweetness, some hop tones--not bad.
2.7 [2/20/15] Draught at Gordon Biersch Mission Valley in San Diego. Clear amber. Aroma of malt, a bit of caramel and toast. Sweetish flavor, caramelly, with a buttery touch, a toasty hint and a drier finish. Light to medium-bodied. Not very good but quite easy-drinking.
3.3 draft, this one was ok. The balance and flavor profile was pretty much dead on, did taste a little flat.
3.4 Bottled. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is wooden, floral, mild earthy notes. Flavour is fruity, floral and quite nicely balanced sweet malts to it. Flavour is very similar in a good balance. Not the most exciting Märzen though.
2.7 A clear, dark golden beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is caramel malty with a fruity touch. It’s medium bodied, a bit sweet on the palate, and with a very soft carbonation. Caramel, some bread and a faint roasted touch in the flavor. Fruityness and some grass, and a faint bitterness. Lasting bready finish with a fruity touch. Rather boring and far from true to style this one. 140227
2.9 Süßlicher, malzig herber Antrunk. Die Süße ist etwas zu stark, hell, besonders zum Ende eher laff. Ok. 8/9/9/8//9
3.0 On tap at Gordon Biersch Park Lane. Poured a clear copper with a thin beige head and no lacing. Taste of caramel malts, slightly roasted malts, and malty throughout. Medium carbonation, medium body. Meh...
3.4 This beer was very good it had medium body and well balanced hops. I would drink this on a regular basis.
3.3 Aromas of caramel, carbonated malts, sugared toffee and grains. Appears a standard copper with a thin white foam rim. Taste is buttered caramel, hops, creamy malts, subtle toffee and hop oils. Overall, pretty solid lager actually. Well rounded taste with a noticeable hop profile.
