Grand Teton Lost Continent Double IPA

Grand Teton Lost Continent Double IPA

Lost Continent Double IPA has an astonishing three pounds of hops per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation, bringing this beer to 90+ IBUs. Starting with an original gravity of 22˚ Plato (1.088 SG), this is a full-bodied beer weighing in at 8.0% ABV. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold food. Try it with prime rib, Cajun blackened pork or chicken, Thai, Indian or Vietnamese cuisine.

3.9 12oz bottle (Courtesy of Headbanger) poured into a Shaker at 40°. Color is a hazy golden orange with very active carbonation and a bunch of floaties bouncing around. It has a small off white whip cream like head. Aroma is sweet fresh hops. It has a bold medium body with a smooth rich mouth feel. Flavor is rich and malty with fruit, then citrus giving it a mellow bitterness. In the after taste the alcohol almost comes out with a note of oak. Overall its an interesting brew, there is defiantly an oak taste in there but no mention of oak by the brewer and very malt heavy. In the end I like it.
3.5 12oz bottle 10/10/14 (Binny’s Naperville)-42° in Shaker-Pours an orangish amber with a small loose white head. Aroma of citrus, hops, and malt. Taste of citrus, hops, and malt. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and not too shabby.
3.7 "after a solid review from friends, i was expecting close to greatness, and this one was simply good. next to Pliny it wasn’t close, but i would have enjoyed it solo. decent grapefruity hop character in the aroma and flavor. a touch thin bodied, next to the big chewy Elder at least. Solid brew."
3.8 12 oz. can courtesy of Lectvay. Bottled date 3/20/14. Aroma is very fruity with pineapple, grapefruit and light traces of pine. The dry hopping does great things even for a older bottle. The main base of the beer shows light caramel malt backing with notes of straw. The flavor is still really nice. Floral, hints of grass, subtle grapefruit and hints of pine resin rounding off the hop flavors. Bitterness lingers only slightly. The texture is dry over the tongue with a lighter side of medium body. After finishing the bottle, I very easily could have reached for another one. Rather easy to drink with no trace of 8% ABV.
3.7 Draught at Westend Tavern. Hazy amber color, white head. Bitter taste with floral hops, citrus, resin, pine and mango. Bitter finish with citrus, hops, mango and resin. Excellent double IPA.
4.1 Hazy dark copper under a foamy and sticky white head. Lovely aroma with lemon zest and floral/grassy fresh hop aroma and a touch of resinous dankness. Bright and delightful flavor bursting with complex hoppiness. It starts with a bright and piney/lemon sharpness that’s quickly quelled by a resin and floral hop tone, a touch of mango and tropical eccentricity, and a slightly boozy pale malt backbone. Quaffable for its strength, but boozy enough to warn you. Nicely done.
3.6 Smoother than I expected. Definitely has a hoppy aroma and taste - pine and citrus - copper color - expected it to be a little stronger but still good
3.4 Floral aroma with a golden pour. Nice hop flavor with a mild bitter aftertaste. Decent IPA.
3.3 Review from notes on 07/17/10 A2: Bottled 5/23/11,reviewed 27JUL11 A: No head, appears flat, which I didn’t expect given the freshness of this beer. Beer is dull in clarity, slightly misty. Lacing evident on wall as glass is emptied, but nonetheless, unimpressive. (2) A2: Pours a copper ale with a single finger of peanut head which falls to a tortuous sheet of the same. Cobweb lacing. Limited Clarity. (3.5) S: Lots of PNW hopping here! Citrus, pine, sheetgrass, grapefruit frosts the crystal malts over this beer. (4) S2: Pine, mint, grapefruit, juicy fruit; all make the hops. The malts are sweet and floury. (4) T: Well balanced, bitterness matches level of sweetness in this beer. The finish encourages tongue to dispute whether you taste bitterness or sweetness, nice balance. (3.5) T2: The hop profile here is flavor dominant, very sweet and floral. There is a definite bitterness, but it seems subdued by the malts and hop profile. Plenty of biscuit and hints of toffee on the malt side of things. The hops seems just a little ill-defined. (3) M: Sharp feel on tongue, the bitter teases the tongue to dryness only to be again weaned toward the sweetness of the late hops. (4.5) M2: Medium bodied with higher carb than preferred for the style. Dry. (3.5) D: Good DIPA. Worth at least one try. Well balanced, which I don’t think DIPA’s usually are. (3) O2: I’m less impressed with this than I was a year ago. A little too sweet for the style. I find their imperial red more hoppy than this. (3) Serving type: bottle 12-23-2010
3.7 Guest tap at Crooked Fence. Foamy active pour settles into nice golden hue with creamy head. Plenty of IBUs to go around, but not enough to make you pucker. Relatively smooth for a double, easy to drink and enjoyable.
3.5 Pours hazy golden orange with thin white head. Pine, citrus, some malt sweetness up the snout. Taste was a little underwhelming for me after the big nose. Orange rind, some spice. Nice bitterness on the back end leads to dry finish. Pretty solid beer but expected bigger.
3.2 Aroma is fruit/syrup, light citrus and a hint of pine/grass. The flavor is citrus, fruit, slight syrup notes and a low and lingering bitterness in the finish.
4.1 Pours a hazy peach-copper color. Aroma is incredibly fruity with wonderful full notes of orange and lemon. Flavor isn’t as overwhelming as I expected given the full aromas. Still very powerful with great orange notes. Fantastic IIPA that doesn’t overwhelm.
3.7 Hazy amber color, decent sized head, good lacing and retention. Aroma reminds me of Sculpin IPA - grapefruit, citrus, pine, some tropical fruit, light caramel malt backing. Medium bodied, moderate bitterness, enjoyable.
2.7 12 oz. bottle, sent from Neillago (thanks a lot, Neil), pours an opaque, cloudy orange with a small off-white head and noticeable sediment. Aroma brings out big notes of resinous hops, a big chunk of caramel malt, a little grapefruit and some residual sugars. Flavour brings out lychee fruits upfront (yes, surprisingly, I get this), some grapefruit notes, caramel malt, medium strength resinous hops, and candy from the residual sugars. Way too sweet for me - sickly sweet in fact. The malt clobbers the hops, making this almost a cross between an IPA and barley wine. Not very well put together. Just drinkable, but highly flawed.
4.0 A pronounced bitterness is tempered by a certain amount of malt sweetness. Complexity and grapefruit zest flavor are appealing. The finish is extended with more contribution from bitterness. At 4+ months, hops may be fading a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised to find a fresher bottle even more impressive.
4.0 Super piney and hops aroma. Smells like the woods up here in Lake Tahoe after a rain. Fresh. mid golden/amber color with a short lived cream head. Tastes stong of pine too. Light lemon zing at first then turns pine. This is really damn good.
3.4 2 aug 2013, bottle. Yellow, clear, some bubbles. Nose is floral malt and moderate cereal malt. Med/thin body and mildly fizzy. Mildly bitter, mildly sweet lemon rind. Ok.
3.4 12 oz picked up today at the Brewforia Eagle tonight poured into my Funk Fest goblet... 1" head with decent honey gold brew. Aroma is nose hair coating citrus hops.. sorta thick pale malt Big body out of the gate.. thick for sure.. tons of grapefruit hoppiness with a more than enough malt.. piney hoppiness and a surprising amount of fruity hoppiness mid palate combines with grainy slightly sweet pale malts.. very rich.. with a finish that sorta drops off quickly.. the fruity hops linger for a bit.. but not nearly as long as I would expect for a brew of this thickness.. Despite my above negatives, this is a pretty nice DIPA right now... I prefer a little drier take on the style.. but this is a good beer.. cough... cough.. cough.. lower the mash temp... cough cough.
4.2 Lots of citrusy, piney hops prickling the nose, solid amber-colored malt backbone on the palate, finishing cleanly.
3.4 Bottle from a grocery store in Driggs, ID. Dark golden and clear with a white head. Citrus fruit, floral and resinous hop aroma. Similar flavor, medium bitterness and light sweetness. Medium body with a light piney bitter finish. Not bad, but nothing special.
3.5 Growler from CBX. Amber pour with a thick white head that laces. Initial sweet carmel malt with resinous pine, floral and citrus hops. Caramel malt entry fades into resinous dry hops and citrus. Sticky hops, sweet, and smooth body with a long bitter finish. Not too shabby.
4.6 This beer has an orange color with a large foamy white head, and the aroma is predominately screaming floral and resin hops with small hints of diacetyl (butteriness), and a malty cereal quality. The taste is extremely balanced with the mild bitterness and mild sweetness, and the mouthfeel fuses a bitter finish, creamy texture, soft carbonation, and a medium body. I’m very impressed with this brew.
3.2 Tap @ Epic Beer Fest Denver 2013. Pours a pretty clear orange appearance with a white head. Fairly citrusy, a bit bready, lightly toasted malty aroma. Somewhat spicy piney hoppy, mild woody, a bit citrusy flavor. Eh.
3.5 Golden orange pour with lacing head. Nice piney hop aroma with a bit of orange and even some malt caramels. Taste is fairly balanced, but the hops take over towards the end, finishing just a shade to harsh and bitter, though it is nice and dry. Medium body and decent carbonation.
3.2 Pours clear orange with average head and good lacing. Aroma is spicy citrus hops, some floral, and pine needles. Flavor comes on strong with same spicy hops, pine resin, orange, just a little bit of malt in the middle. Finishes bitter with a woody resin and a dry biting finish. Just a little too dry and bitter in the end.
3.9 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Greenville, SC (bottled February 12, 2013). Pours deep orange with a frothy off-white head. Wonderful aromas of caramel, grapefruit peel, and tangerine. The taste offers bitter grapefruit and pineapple with a sturdy malty backbone. Palate is a little thinner than I had hoped for but this is only a minor gripe. A well done DIPA overall.
3.5 12 oz. bottle pours a slightly hazy orange with lots of floating sediment, average white head, and good lacing. Aroma is full of citrus and piney hops with some bready malts. Taste is sweet at first with a long bitter finish. Body is at best medium, with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. A little light for a Double IPA. Overall a very solid balanced IPA which didn’t quite meet my expectations given the label.
4.1 Tasted this on tap at the 8th Street Ale Haus in Sheboygan, Wisconsin so I didn’t get great notes. Classically awesome IPA.
3.3 On tap at Manderes Folsom, aroma is pine a grapefruit on a deep breath. Flavor is pine with mild bread notes. Fresh?
