Grand Teton Trout Hop Black IPA

Grand Teton Trout Hop Black IPA

Trout Hop is brewed with Idaho 2-Row Brewers’ Malt and German specialty
malts and has a deep, rich color and roasted finish without the thick and
malty body that often accompanies dark beers. It is kettle hopped and dry
hopped with Pacific Northwest hops, resulting in bold and intense bitterness
and piney, zesty aroma. The full body and dry finish create a refreshing
autumn ale, perfect for any crisp afternoon or cool evening. The spicy hopsof this ale complement rich, flavorful foods. Chocolate mole enchiladas, Indian and Thai curries, and barbeque ribs will accompany nicely.

3.9 Poured from the 4-pack on clearance dated 12/19/13. Jet black with a nice tan collar, has all the visual qualities of a stout, but with more hops than malty sweetness in the taste. Strong yet easy drinking, and on sale, great buy.
3.9 Bottle pours a dark reddish black with an off white top. Nose is roasty and piney. Taste runs sweet to mildly bitter with notes of citrus and resin.
3.5 On draft at the brewery. Pours black with a tan head. Hoppy nose. Flavors of tobacco with vegetal notes. Bitter finish.
4.0 Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose is more grassy and floral than it is roasty, though I can get just a hint of some roasting in there. Taste is fairly bitter, though a more robust roasting is coming through underneath. Pretty decent, actually.
4.0 Roasty, coffee notes comingled finely with citrus of Pacific west hops. Brown with tan head. Roasted, coffee, grapefruit. Ok ipa. Balanced well for 8.5 percenter
3.8 supposedly 145 ibus, this is a dark, rich, monster of a beer that ended up being quite enjoyable, but again - overpriced. thick, resinous, with bright hop complexity and enough dark roasty malt to balance but not overpower. just a good beer all around."
3.8 A great little back IPA. Pours a dark brown with milky mocha head. Aromas are pine and citrus. Bitter chocolate flavors with fresh green hop notes. Delicious.
3.7 12 oz. bottle. It pours black with a tan head. The aroma has really nice chocolate and roast with intense piney and citrusy hops. Good balance of the two contrasting aromas. The flavor is the same. Nice chocolate and roasted malt with intense piney, woody, citrus hops. It finishes mostly bitter, but with some roasted coffee as well. A very nice Black IPA
4.0 Pours black with an aroma of coffee, malt , and some hops. Flavor is more like a hoppy porter. Not a lot of hops but has the sweetness and coffee flavor of a good porter with more hops. I enjoyed it.
3.6 A sweet thick sugary stout aroma. Very black in color. Quite roasty with a fair amount of hops but it just wasn’t working for me. May be done with style for awhile.
3.8 Clear ish dark brown with a thin light tan head. The aroma has a light roastiness with a wee bit of floral/leafy/piney hop tone. Smooth flavor of dark sweet roastiness and a light grassy and earthy bitterness I can’t entirely pin down, except explaining it as leafy and earthy and balanced. Not too roasty or too bitter or acidic. A nice big but nuanced BIPA.
3.4 Decent but not memorable black IPA, decent aroma and taste, but no specific character rises above. Good, but not outstanding.
3.9 Pours dark brown, black color with off white head. Hop, roasted malt, chocolate and citrus aroma. Hop, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and citrus flavors. Medium full body with average carbonation. Hop and chocolate finish.
3.6 On tap at Flaming Grill Cafe, coffee aroma, roasted flavor with a bitter finish.
3.5 On tap at Freshcraft. Almost black with a tan head and light lacing. Aroma and flavor of roasted malts, coffee, earth, bitter hops, pine and chocolate.
4.0 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is roasty, nutty, floral, chocolate. Has a really great bitterness, lots of cocoa, crisp, absolutely delicious.
4.0 Lacking hops for an IPA, more like a porter with some hops. I love it, regardless of how it is classified. Very smooth for 8.5%. Great!!
3.8 On to at capitol beer and taproom. Pours black with khaki head. Taste is pretty hippr with. Nice roasted chocolate malt.
4.0 Had a taste on tap at Craftsmen Tap House in Charleston. Totally reminiscent of a west coast IPA that happens to have dark malts for good measure. Color is dark but body is light. Decent head. Nose and taste is piney and citrus. Had a decent bitterness but balanced by dark, sweet malts. But sort of a mind trick with a lighter mouthfeel. Really interesting.
2.9 Bottle. Black with tan head. Aroma is roasty, burnt coffee, hops. Taste is bitter, roasty, a little sweetness.
3.6 Pours black with a thin, though lingering, tan head. The aroma has roasted malts, coffee, pine, grapefruit, and hints of caramel. It is balanced well. The initial taste leans towards the pine and grapefruit tastes. This extends into the maltiness. It gets very roasty, with plenty of coffee and some chocolate. Long aftertaste is roasted malts and sticks with you. Through all of this, it sitll retains some good IPA bitterness. Its medium in body, with a thicker texture, while having some lively carbonation. There might be better choices of this style, but I enjoyed this.
3.6 Bottle. Nice very dark pour with a frothy brown head. Aroma is citrus hop and some perfumy notes. Taste is roasted malt and hop bitterness on taste, but balanced. Really nice!
4.5 Bottled 11/5/10. Perfumed, malty aroma and black walnut color are hints of the rich complex flavors in Trout hop. Malt is dark but not overly toasted. Hops make an appearance, but after three years of bottle conditioning, the most significant contribution is bitterness sufficient to balance malt sweetness somewhat. Malt character is prominent. Though ABV is 8.5% there is also quite a bit of estery expression.
4.0 From 22oz bottle to shaker. Pour is an oily jet black, creamy khaki colored head. Nose is hoppy, slight citrus, but mainly dominated by malt, coffee, caramel. Taste is bitter, medium body which was suprising. Finishes great, right amount of carbonation. Really liked this one, could have been a little bolder however.
3.6 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a monstrous sizing of thick head which looked like a patch of shaving cream. As for the liquid, it was a dark almost black color of brown and assured me that this was more of a black ale than an IPA. Wrong, the aroma is clearly dominated by a scent of sticky wet green hops with only the slightest touch of darkened malt in the distant background. The flavor is somewhat subtle yet has a conflicting taste between the hops and roast malt that I’m not exactly sure how to react to. Overall an interesting beer that’s different from the rest of the other black IPA’s, but at the same time it’s lacking a balance.
4.0 This beer was like heaven it had that coffee aroma yet it had some good flavors r malt and hops
3.6 750ml bottle $10, split three ways. Dark black color with a decently hoppy smell even though this was dated November 2010. The flavor was a hoppy citrus flavor but I felt like it really clashed with the dark malts. I’m pretty sure that I don’t really like this style just because of the way the hops seem to clash with the malts. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-12-2011 01:40:02
3.5 Bottle, 2011 vintage. Pours opaque deep brown to black with a huge tan creamy head that leaves clumpy lacing. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt, pine, citrus. Flavor same, light sweetness, touch of coffee, medium bitter finish, with bitterness from both the piney hops and the coffee. Medium body.
3.7 750ml bottle from Cardinal Wine in Niles. Now I notice the 2010 date. Just interested in what a Grand Teton Black IPA would be when I picked it up. Pours a very, very dark brown with a tannish head leaving terrific lacing. Aroma has dark roasted malts, chocolate and grapefruit. Taste is of patent malts, caramel, some chocolate and tangerine. Somewhat thick - which may be aging or not, cannot tell. Finishes with bitter malts and some length. Curious how it would have been 2 years ago; nice now and the hops presence may really have been better.
3.0 Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike! A: The beer appears dark brown color with a half inch of head that leaves some decent lacing. S: The aroma has a nice citrus and hop scent, along with an odd, medicinal smell. T: The beer tastes alright, with the hop character more mild than I would prefer, especially given the 8.5% alcohol. I was hoping / expecting the beer to be more grandiose and bold, with a balance of roasted malt character and citrus hops. The taste has an odd astringency that detracts from the overall flavor presentation. M: The feel is decent, with a bitter dryness in the finish. D: An alright beer, but not one that I am interested in having again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-06-2010
