Granville Island English Bay Pale Ale

Granville Island English Bay Pale Ale

The English know a thing or two about pale ale. West Coasters know a thing or two about having a good time. Naturally, we kept these facts in mind when we perfected the recipe for English Bay Pale Ale. Tradition is served in the smooth, mild flavour and caramel malt aroma, and that distinctive West Coast character comes through thanks to natural carbonation and careful maturing. The result? A real pale ale with will rise to any occasion.

3.9 Very good tasting beer. Sweet . Not sure what to say more for 75 characters
4.6 Draft. One of the best beers I've ever tasted. Very smooth, well finished and balanced. Beautiful translucent copper color. Unlike a lot of the current trend of high ABV and overwhelmingly hoppy IPAs, this beer is a perfect balance of hops and malt. I had this one at the Black Bull Tavern in Toronto. I really wish they had this one in the states!

3.0 This beer is a clear copper color with a thin bone white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Malt, hops and caramel aroma. Light-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, mild earthy hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is malty up front with a slight hop aftertaste. Average overall.
2.7 Clear light amber with small off white head. Nose of caramel, bread and touch of grass. Flavor is much the same with some bitterness. Clean sweet finish.
3.0 Appearance: Pours a nice orange-amber body with a slight chilly haze and a decent 2-3 finger head that disappears a little too quickly. Not much lacing to speak of. Smell: Some hops but the malt wins out in the aroma that is a bit faint. Has a dry touch to it. Taste: At first nothing but a slight tinge of bitterness. Opens up a little with a bit of caramel. Has a grainy touch and a certain off flavor that i can’t put my finger on. This is much more malt-driven than hops powered. Still, the taste does not last long and is a bit boring. Mouthfeel: Marginally better if only because it has good carbonation. Otherwise, the body is weak & a tad watery for my taste.
2.9 12oz bottle purchased from the brewery store while visiting Vancouver. Did not like this one as much as expected and only now do I see that it is really a macro brew disguised as a craft beer from Molson Coors which explains why it tasted like the juice of corporate over lords.
3.5 Not much to say about flavour. The beer drinks easily and is good to have in between more flavourful beers
2.6 Bottle. Dark Amber in colour. Malty (bready malts, caramel), some fruitiness and light grassy hops. Sweetish malty with slight bitter hoppy edge. Mild in flavour. Easy drinking, but bland. (2008)
1.0 A very bland beer, in dire need of a few extra hop additions. Poor head retention, minimal aroma.
2.7 Forgettable beer, not hoppy enough for my taste in pale ales. Head disappears quickly. Aftertaste not great.
3.0 Clear copper color. Weak one finger head that dissipates in 5 minutes. Flavors of roasted grains, toffee, faint berries, cinnamon, nutmeg, faint ginger and herbal spices. Is a little bready and biscuity, with bitter red ale spices. Smooth medium bodied, the carbonation is prickly. Light finish that lingers with a faint roasted and grassy feel, and faint gingerbread. Overall decent quality craft. Decent flavors, a little faint, but the balance is great. Well refreshing, a little light, yet satisfying and filling.
3.1 Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Malt aroma. Malt and light citrus flavor. Medium bodied. Malt and light citrus lingers with light earthiness.
3.2 On holiday in Canada from draft dark amber colored body with a off white head and a spicy malt hops aroma a spicy sweet caramel malt hops herby bitter taste with a bitter finish
2.9 Arômes de malt caramélisé, petits fruits rouges subtils, butterscotch, gazon humide. En bouche, gros malt caramélisé, herbes, citron, orange. Bien.
3.0 Cooper colour with off-White head. Malty aroma. Taste of caramel malt. Refreshing.
3.1 Had this beer at some sports bar near my hotel in Sherebrook. Pours light Amber, small off white head powered by lots of carbonation. Some toast and bread, light grass that lingered. Light body.
3.3 473 ml can on the shore of Keji National Seaside Park in Nova Scotia. . Tea colored with exceptional clarity, visible carbonation and a fine head. Mild flavor that’s only a bit more hoppy than malty. Clean and well balanced but mild like a session pale ale. Medium body and carbonation.
2.9 On tap at carbones, pours a nice copper color, light malty aromas and a rusty kind of caramel malt flavour, definitely not my favorite pale ale
2.7 Pours clear copper with a small white head. Malt and grain aroma. Roasted malts, carmel and a little hop in the taste. Decent beer.
2.9 Had a pint at The Paupers Pub on Bloor st. in Toronto. Pint arrived with a thin layer of foamy head. Has a dark coppery amber appearance. Aromas of mild hops and malts. A bit of grains and wheat coming through as well. Taste is of light roasted malts and a good balance of fresh hops. Very mild spices. Somewhat bitter aftertaste. Not too bad.
3.0 Pours a clear red/copper color with a medium bubbly white head. Pretty high carbonation on the eye. Nose of mild 2 row malt with a bit of sweet caramel/fruits. Oily mouthfeel. Not as sweet as I thought it would be you get some flower in the taste. You then get the maltiness and a bit of the hops come throught at the end. Not as bad as I first tought but not outstanding. Lacks a bit of complexivity
2.7 On tap at The Keg Steakhouse (Alberni). Aroma is malty and caramel, with some notes of hops on the background. Taste is caramel, malty, slightly hoppy. Caramel and slightly bitter hoppy aftertaste. A quite mediocre beer.
2.8 Floral grainy nose. Medium heavy foam with a clear copper colour. Initial taste of molasses, biscuit with a grassy aftertaste. Seems a little watered down. Good amount of carbonation. Ok ale.
3.0 Can from LCBO. Light caramel aroma if you sniff hard enough. Flowery taste with caramel undertones.
2.6 On draft at Blue Mountain, Collingwood. No indication that this was an industrial effort so yer pays and finds out the hard way. Hey ho, maybe they could ot tell how bland it is in comparison with craft beer. Technically perfect but boring as a bladder.
3.0 Gift from the north. Not much in the nose after a clear copper pour. Flavor has some caramel and raisin notes but nothing really in your face. Not much of a hop factor, but they weren’t going for one. Easy drinker, nothing offensive.
3.2 Poured from a can. Clear golden color, medium white head. Mild sweet hops aroma. Medium body with a light hops flavor and a light finish.
2.9 0.473 can. Clear, pale copper color and a small, off-white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, syrup, some DMS. Taste of pale malts, syrup, and caramel - simple and common but pleasant. Medium body, slick texture, and average carbonation. Finish is medium long and sweet, malty - very usual but agreeable in its simplicity. Overall a standard EPA, nothing out of the ordinary.
3.3 Draft pour schooner at the brewery. Pours a clear cower color with a patchy fizz head. Sweet fruity, malt aroma. Flavor is sweet, caramel, and a hint of raisin. Light, easy drinking, pale. Certainly doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. Alright beer here.
