Grays Oatmeal Stout

Grays Oatmeal Stout

Rich in color with a strong body and a very creamy texture, the Oatmeal Stout is a true beer lover's brew. The slight hop aroma distinguishes this stout from any other. The Oatmeal Stout is robust, full of body and flavor, and topped off with a creamy light brown head.

3.2 Bottle: Pour is dark brown to black. Aroma is roast, oats, and a hint of coffee. Taste is almost sweet but not quite. Not bad but I expected a bit sweeter, smoother, and more complexity.
3.8 Has awesome sweet coffee roast scents. Has some nice coffee with sweet after taste, light meaty flavors from the mix.
2.9 Pours a very dark, nearly opaque brown with a minimal light tan head. Aroma is nuts and roasted malt. Taste is smooth chocolatey sweet roasted malt with a mild bitterness derived from the roasted malt rather than hops. Like their other offerings, this is a well balanced, but thin textured version of the style. I like this quite a bit, but it’s no more a stout than their porter is a porter.
2.4 Brown pour, small tan head. Not offensive, but nothing of great character. I would distinguish this as a stout for non-stout drinkers. A palatable beer suited for a quick thirst quencher on a hot day. Tastes like a decent stout that was mixed 50/50 with water. Again, not offensive.
3.5 A very dark, brown pour with a small tan head. It has a roasted malt aroma with some cereal and dark chocolate. The medium body has an oily texture with average carbonation. The taste starts a little sweet and finishes with a roasted flavor.
3.3 Pours dark black, tan head. Aroma is roasty oatmeal. Texture is creamy but a bit to thin. Mostly just roasty taste, some oatmeal, coffee. Pretty active carbonation. Some metallic taste, probably from age. Pretty decent stout
3.1 Date: February 16, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: Byerlys Description: Opaque dark brown pour with nice amount of head. Aroma of grain, roasted malt, chocolate and slight hop. Taste is basically roasted malt but a mild and dry bitter finish. Too much carbonation and very thin for a stout.
2.3 As 56 Oatmeal Stout. A clear brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a sweetish slightly off chocolate, with light cheesey notes. In mouth, a light smooth chocolate with some light acidic points, a tad unpleasant. On tap at Istmus Beer and Cheese Fest, Jan 21 2012.
3.9 Roasty/sweet in aroma. The flavor is malty and smooth with a mildly bitter finish. Solid Oatmeal Stout.
4.0 Malt has toasty cereal aroma. Black appearance. Thin tan head. Bitter to sweet finish. Full body.
3.5 12 oz. bottle labeled 56 Oatmeal Stout at the Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor, WI.. Poured to a small Czech-pils glass with a black/brown color, bubbles & cream to the tan head, and nice cling to the wavy lacing. The aroma was smooth and roasty, with coffee notes, but also a bit of cardboard invading the senses. The flavor continued the roastiness, adding a touch of wood, moderate bitterness, and a light creaminess to the mouthfeel. The finish was subtly dry. Aroma and overall reflected the oxidation. 12 oz. bottle again, this time at the bar in JJ’s La Puerta Restaurant in Sister Bay, WI.. Poured to a shaker with a similar appearance plus a bit of ruby highlighting. No cardboard, but just a bit of light grain & freezer burn scent to the malt in the nose. Showed additional hints of caramel, toffee, & treacle in both aroma and flavor. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation. Now that’s better! +.2
3.1 Poured a nice dark brown - almost black - with minimal beige head and lacing. Aroma was of roasted malt, coffee, and a hint of hops. The taste was smooth with roasted malts initiating and then rolling into coffee hints with a moderate hop bitterness finish. The mouth feel was accepable, but it seemed just a bit thin for a stout. Overall, this a good stout.
3.5 Roast, sweet sugary malt, and mild fruit aroma. Dark Brown-Black with creamy tan head. Sweet malt with lite bitterness. Balancing roast with hints of coffee & chocolate. Lively carbonation, medium body, and mild bitter finish.
3.2 12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, a little roasty, coffee, with a light bitter finish.
3.3 12 ounce bottle from Woodman’s Madison West. Pours a very dark brown color with a large fizzy brown head. Fair head retention. Aroma of chocolate, oats, faint roast and a bit of a tart note. The taste is caramel, coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and a tart finish. A bit thin. Decent.
3.8 A very nice stout. Tasty and full bodied. A nice standard bearer for Gray’s
3.4 Bottle. Aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, molasses, roasted malts and some citrus hops. Dark brown hue that sits nearly black in the glass. Small fully diminishing head that left no lace. Flavor is medium sweet. Palate is medium bodied and watery soft. Overall a beer that smells good and tastes average but the rest is crap.
1.6 A: The pour is a very dark brown, almost black, with a small tan head. S: Smells...bad. Like prunes and roast. Slight acidity to the nose with some acrid roast and coffee notes. There is some good sweetness of toffee and caramel, however. T: What a terrible flavor. Watery and vegetal with an astringency to it and a weak coffee flavor in the background. Not any chocolate to speak of, almost no sweetness is present either. M: Thin and watery on the tongue with a moderate level of carbonation. O: Watery and awful in flavor, not a good combination.
4.0 Pours an opaque black with a one finger thick brown/tan head. Nose is chocolate, molasses and malt. Nice and creamy on the palate, the flavor is full of dark roasted malt with touches of chicory and nuts. Hop profile is light but helps with a crisp aftertaste. Overall, a very good beer, but not quite a great beer. Pairs well with pretzels and stone ground mustard.
2.8 It starts out promisingly enough, with a healthy head and an aroma with a touch of chocolate to go along with a faint scent of hops. The body is light to medium and the texture thin, though, both of which are off for an oatmeal stout. The finish has a short, slight bitterness and then it disappears. Pretty dull.
3.3 Bottle. Aroma is coffee, caramel, toffee, chocolate, oatmeal, maple. Taste is heavy and roasty but smooth. Dry with a faint bitterness. A bit lacking on the palate but pretty solid.
3.7 An old favorite....pours almost black with a reddish tinge; sweet / burnt (good thing) taste; sweet nose. Hints of coffee and chocolate to me...a good one...will have another
3.0 Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a lastring tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasted malt, light vanilla and light coffee. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and a hint of vanilla with a smooth lingering roasty finish.
4.5 Was going to drink Big Sky’s Slow Elk Oatmeal Stout, but the bartender convinced me to try this one instead. I’m not sure if he was doing me a favor, or finding a more expensive beer. It was good, of course, how couldn’t it be?
3.4 On tap at the brewpub, pours black with a good head. Flavors of chocolate, coffer, somewhat bitter, and quite smooth throughout. Opt for the darker beers when ordering at Gray’s.
3.5 Pours a deep dark chocolate color, basically black with a small but nice tight head. The aroma is very roasty almost like burnt starbucks style coffee beans, there is a little molasses sweetness in there as well with some mild chocolate notes. On aroma alone this beer beats the hell out of that Bully Porter. The flavor is sweet but not quite cloying, there is certainly some good mocha character and a bit of molasses. I’m not sure if there is any lactose sugar in this one but I would be more than willing to bet on it. After all this that burnt toast thing creeps up in the back and makes a serious impression at the finish. Generally speaking all the flavors work very well together here and it’s really kind of cool how the beer does the sweet at first then suddenly bitter and overly roasty thing.
3.3 chocolate, coffee, smoke, .....this was a very easy beer to enjoy Appearance was black with a nice head that hangs on glass medium body, lively, this is a beer that I will drink again
3.3 ( Bottle, courtesy of BMan1113VR ) Pours a brown body with a small off-white head. Aroma of roastiness, toasted marshmallow, coconut, some coffee, and cocoa. Flavor of roasted malt, cocoa, subtle oatmeal, and coffee.
2.8 bottle thanks to the man with the b bman1113vr. Pours black with no head. Nose is eh. Taste is sweet and oaky and off very off for the style.
3.4 bottle thanks to bman1113vr. chocolate pour with a cream head. roasted malts, light chocolate on the nose. nice on the palate with a smooth flavor of chocolate, roastiness and a hint of oat in the finish.
