Great Divide 20th Anniversary Belgian-Style Ale

Great Divide 20th Anniversary Belgian-Style Ale

This Belgian-style Ale is a golden example of our traditional bold character, but with a little something special to commemorate this milestone. Fermented with Viognier grape juice, 20th Anniversary is both delicate and assertive. Big without being brutish, cunning without being cloying, this is a grown-up beer for a big-time celebration.

2.5 Bomber from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. App.: Clear pale golden with a frail white head. Aroma: Lots of apple juice/cider, some esters, a bit of a sweet honey thing, citrus and coriander, a bit of booze. Palate: Medium body, fairly full, fine carbonation. Flav.: More apple juice/cider than the nose, sweet, boozy, lightly spicy, a bit of citrus, meh; sweet with limited bitterness and a boozy, sweet finish. Disappointing.
3.2 Bottle at home. Clear pale golden beer with an offwhite head. Fruity, citrus and bready aroma. Fruity sourish, grassy flavour.
3.9 Cloudy blonde white head. Really mild nose of yeast, hay malts and a little citrus. Taste of citrus and a little acidic zest bite, those hay malts show up, and some nice yeast, and the crisp white wine flavours shows up in the finish. Aftertaste is a fresh tangerine. Very mild beer, very, very drinkable. Should be sitting at the dock drinking this one. Very nice. Surprised at the wild ratings swings on this one. I think it’s a solid choice. ’Course unless I head down to Buffalo I’ll never have it again, thanks LCBO.
3.2 650ml bottle. Hazy yellow body with a medium white head, malty and sweet with hints of spices, citrus and yeast.
3.4 650 ml bottle. Clear amber with white head. Smell is malty, caramel and sweet fruity. Taste is sweet fruity, grapes, oranges, lemonade and some dried fruit. Sweet with medium bitterness and medium carbonation.
3.7 Bottle. Semi hazy blonde beer with a large white head. Aroma is spicy with notes of citrus, caramel, mango, red berries and white grapes. Flavor is spicy with notes of citrus, spices, pear, golden delicious apples and honey. Well balanced and only slightly boozy.
1.4 Not good no matter how I tried it. Do not buy this. My opinion. Not what you think my bad for not reading the small print.
3.4 How: Bottle. Where: Systembolaget. Appearance: Hazy golden colour with a white head. Aroma: Fruit, yeast, malt, caramel, citrus. Body: Medium body, medium to lively carbonation. Flavour: Caramel, some spices, yeast, fruit.
3.8 Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 1/11/15 Aroma: Aroma of saison/Belgian yeast, clean spice, clove, fruit, honey, earth, and a bit of bread Appearance: Pours a clear gold color, looks similar to apple juice, with a fizzy, bright white head on top Flavor: The grape comes out more in the flavor, and melds well with the yeast/spice flavors Palate: Medium body, leaning light, fairly easy drinking considering the ABV, with a lively carbonation Overall Impression: This is pretty interesting. From the initial aroma I got no grape at all, but I got it more so in the flavor. It’s such a blonde beer, that you almost expect a different flavor. It’s kind of like a saison merged with a tripel, merged with something else, all together in one beer. The spice is probably the strongest component, with the sweetness second. The dryness really only show up on the finish, but it is there too. Not bad at all. Color this guy impressed. This one shows off some clear brewing knowhow.
3.5 Bottle. Golden, light haze. Golden malty, honey, sweet yellow fruity- ripe orange, sweet pineapple stone fruits, some spices. Smooth soft mouthfilling body. Sweetness, malts, belgy yeastyness, fruityness. A very flavourful, fruity drink. Filling, bit boozy, nice though. Clean. -- bb
3.2 A good friend shared his bomber with me. The aroma was nice, with notes of malt and yeast. You can definitely tell this is a Belgian. It pours a cloudy golden color with very little head. A good taste with Banana, cloves and spices. This finish was not as complex as I would have expected, it was a simple sweet grape taste. I did not enjoy this as much as the 19th anniversary.
3.9 Bottle at a tasting at Butler's place. Pours a slightly hazy light yellow with one finger of white foam. Aroma is lemons grass wheat pepper spice. Wine character. Wonderful. Flavor follows and has slight bitterness. Lots of wheatiness. Really nice beer.
2.8 Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear pale yellow/golden beer with a decent offwhite head. Fruity bready aroma, yeasty, citrus, grapes, grass, almost metallic. Fruity sourish flavor, grassy, metallic, citrus. Very much below par for this brewery.
3.4 It poured a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma was of grapes, apricots, grain and spices. The taste was a light bitter and spicy. The finish was light bitter with a dry spicy note. Nice.
3.3 22 oz bottle; bottled in March 2014; served in a Belgian snifter. Poured pale golden with alight haze and small head. The aroma is fruity and has the unmistakable character of Belgian yeast. Some light funk and heavy yeast reduce its attraction but this aspect does not carry over to the flavor. Complex with very good balance and a mix of tropical and other fruity flavors, including white grapes. Neither bitter nor sweet. O: this is a quite enjoyable Belgian style ale worth seeking out.
2.2 500ml bottle (tasting @VastActive place, thanks). Hazy amber color. Medium size, white head, stays. Sourish, malty, faint fruity notes in aroma. Sweet, malty, apple jam in taste. Luckily alcohol is well hidden. Not for my taste.
1.4 650ml bottle - thanks mjs, VastActiv and the rest of the Hel crowd! Sweet fruit juicy aroma, grapefruity, grassy too. Pale and hazy, small brief head. Thin palate. Fruity, but bland. Total sweet fruit-juicy mess. OK, did cover the alcohol fairly well, but I really didn’t like it. Grapes are a big no-no for me in beers.
3.4 Clear gold body and white thin head. Nose of pineapples and nail polish. Flavour is tart, hoppy, grassy and acetone. Decent.
3.2 Not bad but didn’t seem all that special either. Fruity but not specifically grapes. Yeasty but not particularly Belgian.
3.3 65 cl bottle @ VastActiv, BBE 1.12.2014 (phew!) Aroma has citrus, some slightly tart notes and grapefruit. Also some acidic white wine notes. Flavour has grapefruit, tart citron and . Not very saison-like, GD-like or even beer-like. And not a Belgian strong ale -like either, hides the ABV very well if there really is 8,2%.
3.0 (Bottle, 0.65 l - BB 1-Dec-2014, from Systembolaget, 20141122) The beer poured golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had yeast, grapefruit and grass. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, grapefruit, malts, grass, yeast and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, fruity and bitter. A weird experiment. A Belgian style radler?
3.4 Bottle 0.66l at home, Helsinki. BBE 1.12.2014.Thanks to mjs. Colour is cloudy golden with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Fruits, citrus, banana, some spices, Belgian yeast and malts. Very fruits and not typical belgian strong ale.
3.0 660ml bottle Pours hazy yellow with a bubbly white head. Aroma of grapefruit, juicy notes, yeast, spices and lemon. Taste is sweet, yeasty and spicy with notes of honey, grapefruit and earthiness. Finish is sweet and sticky with notes of honey and lemon. Too sweet and stuffy.
3.4 @ Beer tasting, Havregatan 15/8-14. Aroma: Yeast, fruity, banana, spicy notes. Taste: Dito. Body is medium, the finish is dry and bitter.
3.7 Hazy yellow/gold with thin fizzy head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, banana, grapes, and wheat. Semi-sweet with grapes-esque flavoring along with typical Belgian yeast notes. Nice ale.
2.7 Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. Clear very light yellow with quickly diminishing low white head. Aroma of grapefruit, winey, a bit hoppy, herbs, a bit alcoholic. Flavor of sweet grapefruit, fruity, white wine, alcoholic. Sticky sweet aftertaste. Light carbonation, light to medium-bodied.
3.0 Bottle sample at tasting at Beer & Beyond shop. Clear yellow-golden with a small head. Aroma - spicy, vinous, yeast. Sweet, fruity, white wine, sweet grapes, grapes flavors too dominant for me. Medium-bodied and carbonation.
3.1 18th October 2014 Hazy gold beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is light and a little crisp. Floral and milkly sweet malty start, Mild yeast and spice. Mellow orangey citrus. Whisper of lemon. Light dry finish. Not really engaging me that much but it’s drinkable,
3.3 12 oz bottle. Pours very pale yellow. Aroma of coriander, citrus, banana, grain. Flavor of citrus, banana, grape, grain. A lighter flavored beer that has some semblance of a white wine. Not bad, but not something I really enjoy.
