Great Divide Belgica

Great Divide Belgica

The Roman name for the Low Countries–is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies–or the Ardennes. 7.2% ABV.

First released as Belgian IPA:

Just for fun, the brewers took our Titan, a hop forward American IPA and introduced a Belgian yeast strain to it. The result is unique Belgian-style ale with lots of fruity esters, a citrus hop flavor and nice hop bitterness that’s surprisingly smooth. 7.5% alcohol by volume.

3.3 A-- Poured yellow, like the label. Small head, cloud white in color and it had good head retention and left no lacing. S-- Slightly sweet with a touch of malt. Slight bit of sugar and bread, Not a big smell, very faint. T-- A little more hop forward in the taste. Still get the bread and sugar smell but the hops are there off the bat. Not a big but it is there. Also get a little bit of citrus in this. Nice surprise. M-- Different but good. Like how it is hops at first then the Belgian style comes out.A little different to get hops, then bread and sugar, followed by dryness and citrus. D-- Decent Belgian IPA. nothing more
3.8 355 mL bottle at York Tap into a fluted glass. Cloudy orange colour with a bubbly, foamy head. Verry hoppy, light, dry, citrus, lime and orange, spiced. A tasty beer. A cross between IPA and witbier in taste. Hoppy and wheaty aroma.
3.5 355ml bottle kindly shared by Finn at a tasting session. Dense, rocky, white head that laces well. Cloudy golden body. Fresh fruity aroma with a spiced wheaty touch. Ripe fruits like dry lemon and oranges in flavour with spices playing second fiddle. Earthy malts beneath. Smooth bitter ending with a long tail. Well balanced and good to drink (Tromsø,30.05.2012).
3.1 19th December 2009 Hazy gold beer. Yeasty orange citrus nose. Semi dry and semi soft palate, turns light and frothy. Honey - orange and then a blossoming bittering coriander spice that really takes over and leaves a bitter aftertaste past the dry finish. Aquired taste but not bad.
4.0 Flaske 0,355l fra Utobeer, Borough Market. Delt med Rune under rateseanse i WC-veien 30 Mai 12. Veldig lys gylden. Høyt kremaktig betongskum. En har følelsen av at dersom en vender glasset opp ned vil ingenting renne ut. Litt uklar. Sterk & god krydderaroma. Smaken er ekstremt velbalansert. Appelsinskall, druer & litt krydderFin syrlighet i ettersmaken. Rett og slett et forfriskende og godt øl.
3.2 Pours a clear and golden beer with a white head. The aroma is malt, sweetness and coriander. The flavor follows the nose with additional hops. The palate is sweetness and bitterness. Overall a good beer.
3.3 Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is malt, fruity yeast and orange. Flavour is malt, citrus, yeast and orange.
3.7 It is poured a medium golden color, with touches of amber along the sides of the glass. A head forms a half to three quarters of an inch high, white in color, staying there for sometime. The spicy, sweet, fragrances of the Belgian yeast is at the front of the aroma. That is followed by a mild grassy scent, along with a soft citrus fragrance. The yeasty esters are strong at the beginning of each taste. That is soon followed by hearty bread and mild malt flavors. Then at the halfway point across the palate, the growing flavor of grapefruit hits. Brought along for the ride are grassy and earthy flavors, which linger on the palate for sometime. A heavy watery feel at the front, it then gradually gains weight as it rolls to the back. It finishes with an arid dryness on the back of the palate. This is a strong Belgian IPA, bringing the unique flavors from the yeast and the added intensity of hops; make this a very worldly beer. I throw it at some spicy Mexican or Chinese dishes.
3.7 Bottle. An unclear, golden colored beer with a medium sized off-white head. Some alcohol on the nose, followed by sweetness, fruityness, a touch of spicyness and pine cones, and also a little cellar hint and some orange. Sweet, citrusy flavor with piney bitterness, a touch of spicyness and some orange. Full-bodied, warming and pleasantly carbonated. Bitter, fruity and sweet finish. A nice Belgian style American. 110610
2.7 Okay, so this beer got the ax and my bottle is more than a year old. It is supposed to be an India pale with Belgian lager yeast. I’d say it has the floral nose and flushing body of a saison. There’s some white pepper in there too. Tastes sweet and bitter, but not a knock out either way. Thin yet chalky somehow. Oh well, can’t win them all.
3.7 bottle at La Cave Du Vin, poured into a tuliup glass a: light hazy gold color, light off white 1/2" head with good retention. Lacing coats the glass s: light yeast, citrus, and flowery hop aroma t: slightly spicy with a nice light grain bill. slight lemon. Not as bitter as I was expecting but hop presence is nice and flowery. Very nice m&d: light to medium bodied, finishes slightly drying. Very drinkable.
3.5 Bottle. Pours out a yellow color with a white head on it. Smell is yeasty and fruity with a pretty decent hop aroma. Taste smooth and lively with plenty of carbonation. An interesting beer, but I am glad I only bought a single.
3.3 Bottle:   Dirty golden, slight sediment, huge fluffy white head, very nice lacing.   Bright and tart floral nose, barnish, certainly smells more Belgian than IPA.   Very barnish on the tongue, musty, some floral notes, semi-sweet hop bite.   Seems decent enough, not a brute on either side of the Belgian IPA fence.   Backside loses its sweetness and becomes slightly dry, and even more musty.   IPA aspect seems to come and go rather quickly.   Becomes a bit more mealy at the finish.   Had a great start, but the backside leaves a bit to be desired.   Aftertaste is a little rough.   Smelled and started out fairly well, but finished in the toilet.   The floral aspect needed to be brighter, less mealiness, and perhaps a bit more hop bite.   Then it would be something to seek out.   Otherwise it was okay.
2.8 All they did was add a different yeast strain to the Titan? Really? Yeah there is a hellacious yeast front that hits you like a tempur-pedic pillow. It turned to butter for me after the initial wave. I did not get much Titian form this because there was so much feckin yeast tang! The third one from the variety pack settled down some but by then it was a moot point. Nose of .... you guessed it. Cloudy....yup, Meh.
3.1 Funny one. All yeast but the yeast flavour isn’t particularly pleasant. Body is thin and the yeast flavour is sharp so everything clashes
3.5 Appearance: lightly hazed deep gold, short creamy white head, some shimmery lace. Aroma: a little pilsner-y, with definite citrus notes of lemon peel and orange zest, and some fresh-cut flowers too. Taste: starts a little sweet, with notes of wonder bread and pie crust, and smoothly flows into a citrusy, flowery hop profile. Finish: smooth and clean, with lingering notes of citrus and floral hops that are only lightly bitter, almost delicate. Notes: A very nice beer. Palate was soft and silky. Hops were very present, but did not overpower the flavor. Extremely drinkable.
3.5 RBESG 09 Grand Tasting @ The Harlequin. Clear golden with big white head. Sweet fruity hoppy aroma. Sweet malty taste very fruity both in malts and hops. Nice.
3.5 355ml bottle poured a slightly hazy golden color with a decent white head and some traces of lacing. Aromas of floral hops and yeast. Taste is malt and fruit sweetness with some yeast and a moderately hoppy bitter finish. Abundant carbonation and medium body give rise to a nice mouthfeel. This is an interesting beer and was a pleasing tasting experience.
4.0 Clear golden body with smooth white head, as I expect a Belgian to be. Quite hoppy aroma with floral and lemon, together with light peach and white bread. Taste start with a quick fresh sweetness but ends with a true hop kick. Leaves a dry taste in your mouth. Alcohol is noticable but makes the body interesting and smooth. Lowl carbonation. Generally like the Belgian IPA crossovers and this is no exception. Recommended. (35cl bottle)
3.3 Bottle. Golden colour with a white head. Aroma is citrus, lime, alcohol, fruit, floral. Flavour is citrus, pine, alcohol, hop, coriander, floral. Medium body. OK beer.
3.3 Bottle. Moderate malt note of grain, perfume and lemongrass for the hops, light barnyard for the yeast, with hints of pear, wood and clove. Head is huge, fizzy turning rocky and forming a thick raft, white with excellent lacing and is fully lasting. Color is hazy and sparkling amber. Flavor starts faintly sweet and moderately to heavily acidic, then the long finish is moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily which is mostly hidden by the fizzy carbonation. It finishes moderately astringent and alcoholic. Though a tasty beer, this doesn’t go deep enough into the Belgian Ale style for me to give it a higher score.
3.4 Bootlus, pours hazy golden with small white head.... the aroma is hoppy, fruits,flowers.... the flavor is thick caramel, hops, yeast... dry finish...
3.4 Bottle. pours hazy golden with a medium white head. The aroma is quite hoppy with notes of citrus, fruit and light spices. The flavour is malty and cramelish with lots of fruity hoppy notes. Quite dry finish with marmelade notes.
3.7 355ml Bottle - Gold/amber with a slight haze and white head. Yeast, banana, peach and tea in the aroma. The aroma is very Belgian and extremely enticing. Hoppy, fruity and slightly spicy taste with notes of banana, peach, passion fruit, tea and spice.
4.0 I had this with dinner the other night. Like most Great Divide offerings it was earthy and cloudy with big chunks of something floating in there but at the same time very flavorful and had that special Belgian something going on. I liked it.
4.8 An excellent aroma, both Belgian spices and lots of hops. This has a ton of Belgian spice right from the first sip. A nice dry hp finish. Pretty darn good. This beer makes me crave for GD in Las Vegas!! I’d buy this one all the time!
3.5 Bottle @ home. Yellow / golden color, small white head. Average smell and taste, yeast and hops. Kind of weird, not really like other IPAs I’ve tasted. Pretty flat and a little dull. Carbo good, body medium.
3.4 12oz bottle: Pours a clear deep golden with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a lightly sweet pale malty nose with some herbal citrusy hops and floral yeasty esters. Starts with average fullness and carbonation with a herbal grassy hop bitterness and citrus flavor before a drier, bittersweet finish. Could use a little more body, but still a pretty decent Belgian IPA.
3.5 Picked this one up in a mix-a-six and really enjoyed it. I’m not usually a fan of IPA’s but the addition of the Belgian yeast mellowed out the trademark pine/bitterness I don’t usually care for in IPA’s. Overall a good beer.
4.0 12oz bottle - Pours slightly cloudy orange color with a white head. A small amount of lacing is left on the glass. Aromas of orange, pineapple, and spice. Citrusy and some coriander flavor. Smooth tasting with faint alcohol taste. This beer is great. Nice buzz comes with it as an added bonus!
