Great Divide Rumble

Great Divide Rumble

Rumble IPA is an American IPA with subtle nuance. Brewed with heavy-handed additions of Pacific Northwest hops, this beer is gently aged on French and American oak resulting in a wonderful balance of bitterness, caramel sweetness, vanilla, and undertones of pine and citrus.

3.5 Pours a hazy copper-golden with an antique white head. Pungent aroma. Caramel malt, citrus, oak, and oaky vanilla. Soft, nearly cottony mouthfeel. A lot of vanilla flavor got picked up from the oak. Caramel malt comes through prominently as well and sweetens the beer to balance the bitter and citrus contribution of the hop profile.
4.0 I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments.
3.9 Mellow citrus and pine aroma. Hazy copper body with sediment floating around. Topped with a thin skim coat off-white head. Bold bitter bite with a citrusy malt taste. Has a little zest but finishes on the cleaner side. It has a style that is neither west coast, east coast or English IPA for that matter. In other words it has a more distinct taste than most in this category.
3.4 Bottle. This is a nice heavy IPA with a slightly softer edge which is a result of the wood aging i assume.
4.4 Pours deep orange with a small white head. Smells piney with hints of caramel and wood. Taste is bitter, vanilla, oaky, hints of sweetness. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Great Divide Rumble finishes with a soft, lingering oaky smoothness.
4.2 Pours a dark, cloudy, unfiltered amber orange color. It has little white flakes of something floating around. Creamy white thick head with insane lacing. Wow! Staring at the bottom of the glass, it looks like dandruff, but nevermind that. I took a sniff when I opened the bottle and it was strong vanilla from the get go. But from the glass, I smell hops. Not quite as strongly as most IPAs, but very strong. Pine, orange zest. But the oak, it’s there. It’s earthy citrus and earthy woody too. Not so much vanilla from the glass. Taste is hop forward. Not so much malt, not so much sweet. The vanilla comes through at the end, and a little more sweetness would help bring out the vanilla more. But still, it’s quite good to taste. I taste the orange zest, but not so much caramel. The earthy oak makes it interesting. Mouthfeel is a little watery for such a high abv beer. It’s dry. But for an IPA it’s extremely drinkable. It’s very clean, and only slightly bitter finish. Overall, this is a really good IPA. It’s different, and it’s tasty. My glass is almost empty and there’s all kinds of lacing on the glass. I gave it a swirl and it conjured up another round of huge thick head. It’s not as bitter as most IPAs, but if it were just a touch sweeter, we’re talking the perfect IPA here.
3.8 Bottle. Light wood, orange malt, and grapefruit peel aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet orange malt, oak, and moderately bitter herbal grapefruit peel flavor. Nice body. Tasty.
4.0 Good beer. Balanced sweetness and bitterness and hint of oak aged. Had a six pack from Holmes.
3.8 35,5 cl bottle @ hotel room, Los Angeles. Bottled 06.04.2015. Aroma is sweetish wit apricot, resin and fruity tones. Flavour has sweetish apricot, resiny malt, fruits and sweet berry juice. American sweetness and resin are strong in this one.
3.5 355 ml bottle @ hotel room, Los Angeles. Bottled on 06.04.2015. Pours hazy amber color with a small head. Pine and resin on the nose, toffee and caramel malts. Sweet caramel flavor with toffee, orange and wood. A bit weird this. 4314
3.7 355 ml bottle. Enjoyed at Los Angeles, CA. Pours a hazy amber orange colour with a small foamy head. Aroma of sweet toffee, wood, mild biscuit maltiness and weed. Flavour of fresh floral bitterness, wood, weed, some citrus and mild pineapple mango fruitiness. Medium bodied. Interesting.
3.4 355ml bottle Pours dark orange with a small head. Aroma of oak, grassy hops, sweet caramel, toffee, citrus and vanilla. Taste is sweetish, caramely and citrusy with some oak, toffee, grass and pine. Finish is sweet, oaky and grassy. A bit strange.
3.4 Pours a deep opaque straw yellow with thick white head. Aroma of herbal, floral, and citrus hops, oak, and grass. Flavor matches well and has a pleasant aftertaste. Solid beer and drinkable.
2.7 April 2015 bottle drunk 8/18/15. I tried to keep up on Great Divide’s beers for a long time, but they just pump the damned things out so quickly that I’ve long since kept current, but it’s nice to try a new one now and again...that being said, I was curious about this one, if not so hopeful. The appearance is a lovely burnished copper, good clarity and a creamy, light beige head atop with good retention. In the nose, however, not that it smells bad, there’s just a ton of strong, sourdough-like oakiness and even more caramel. Smells very barleywine-like to me and much stronger than a 7.1% ipa. While the PNW hops are certainly there, adding light pine, plentiful orange rind and grapefruit, all of their potential brightening edge is sunk in to the caramel and oak and it seems round, sweet and heavy. The mouthfeel, unsurprisingly, is very supple from all of the malt; at least there are no harsh/astringent wood tannins. Carbonation seems appropriate, medium-light but nicely tight/engaging. Obviously not meant to be compared exactly as an IPA, but even taking it for what it is, it’s just a lot of dull caramel sweetness, big toasted oak flavors and some misplaced bitterness and acidity from the hops. If you like over-the-top barleywines.....
3.4 Draft to taster pour avg gold with moderate white head. Nose slightly dank, some light floral hop, but not to strong. Taste strong slightly astringent bitter up front. Dank and slight vegetal mid palate mixed with sweet malt. Light bitter finish.
3.5 It pours dark golden with an off white head. There are aromas of citrus and caramel. There are also hints of oak, vanilla, and pine. The flavors are pine and citrus with oak as the dominant flavors. It is moderately bitter on the palate.
3.7 Pours a hazy unfiltered golden amber. Medium body. Great hop flavor, vanilla, and oakiness. Bitterness to end slightly stale towards the end of the beer.
3.2 Poured from 12oz brown bottle into pint glass, a mostly-clear deep amber colour with moderate beige foam. Fairly typical APA/A-IPA traits: malty, rich caramel sweetness, slightly bready and toasty, with loads of citrusy and resiny hops. A bit coarser and muskier than most, with only the slightest trace of the advertised wood-aging. Very subtle oak tannins, vanilla, a little mushy oxidation. Medium body and carbonation, bittersweet aftertaste. Decent enough and drinkable but not nearly as complex as I’d hoped.
3.3 on tap at Dog & Bull in Croydon - nice orangey color. Hoppy aroma. Nice hop flavor that could use a little sweetness. You can pick up the oak flavor from the oak aged barrels.
4.2 Pours copper orange with a white head. Head retention is ok. AROMA: malty, caramel, pine, citrus, herbs, vanilla, woody, light tropical fruit, spice, herbal hops and light peppercorns. TASTE: spice, caramel, pine, citrus, herbs, vanilla, woody, hop bitterness, lightly boozy, peppercorns and light cinnamon. AFTER TASTE: spice, caramel, woody, vanilla and pine/hop bitterness with an oily rich finish.
4.4 355ml bottle. Pours dark orange, cloudy with a rocky head. The aroma is citrus, herbs and a lot of vanilla. The taste is very hoppy with a medium bitterness.
3.8 Pours dark, opaque honey golden-brown with a nice buff head. Aroma is hoppy and woody with a malty undertone and a citrus hint. Flavor has woody hop, orange, and malty tones, tasty if not spectacular. Mouthfeel has firm, viscous body and strong fizz. Get ready to rumble.
4.0 Pours an opaque, unfiltered amber, pretty frothy head, lots of lacing. Oak, vanilla, caramel on the nose. Creamy mouthfeel. Hoppy bitterness offset by sweetness from vanilla, caramel, toffee notes. Bitter at the front; sweet and smooth at the back. A really enjoyable IPA. A solid, drinkable beer.
3.8 Pours a cloudy golden color with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Fairly bitter with a dry finish. A decent beer.
3.1 Draft at Chuck’s. Clear amber pour with frothy head. Aroma: caramel, steeped grains; oak, citrus, and vanilla meets urinal cake. Moderately sweet, light citrus with restrained but perceptible bitterness. Creamy texture, medium body. Overall: interesting take for sure, but the urinal cake kills it for me.
3.8 Two pints at the Viewhouse. I’m weary of aged IPAs, but Great Divide has nailed it. Plenty of citrus hops are in the nose with tasteful okay sweetness for balance. No oxidized hop quality is noted. The palate is smooth and medium full. The oak and malts are a nice compliment to the assertive hops. Very tasty.
4.0 Hoppy scents and fruit right off the bat, with a slightly dark brown color. Great citrus hops flavors with a nice after taste.
3.6 355ml bottle. Clear golden amber color with off white head. Hoppy and malty aroma, sweet citrusy fruity, light pine, caramel, light alcohol. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma with some wood notes. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.
3.7 Draft. Pours deep murky orange with a thin white head that lingers in the center of the glass. Mellow hop flavor with oak finish.
3.3 Aromas of vanilla, caramel, sharp citrus. Murky, rusty copper-brown with a barely lasting off-white head. Slightly sweet upfront, pretty strong, nicely balanced by sharp hops. Medium-full bodied.
