Great Lakes Alberta Clipper

Great Lakes Alberta Clipper

Bid farewell to winter’s cruel tyranny with the creamy, bittersweet dark chocolate flavors and fresh raspberry tartness of Alberta Clipper Porter. Named for the intense winter storms that sweep the Midwest and Great Lakes Regions, making us all a little tougher (and a lot colder), Alberta Clipper is the perfect treat to celebrate the return of milder weather and kiss those wintry winds goodbye… at least for a little while.

3.4 This isn’t as good as Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porter, but it isn’t bad. It pours the same dark brown as that other porter, but there isn’t much head. The aroma is slight, I don’t smell much. Just a little coffee and mild citrus. The flavor lacks the slightly smokey malt quality I associate with my favorite malts. There’s some hoppy kick, but a watery finish.
3.6 Nice tart cherry flavors but with a good balance of chocolate. Really enjoyed this one
3.7 Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and molasses. Flavor is similar. Not too thick like a stout, but also not to thin like some porters tend to be.
3.7 I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with a tan head. Taste fruity/raspberry upfront, dark chocolate, malt finish. I thought this was good. I could drink this again.
2.7 Bottle@home, from Wine Spot, Cleveland, USA. Medium aroma of raspberry and a hint of chocolate. Pitch black color with minimal natural white head. Medium earthy taste with raspberry, slightly roasted malts and a hint of chocolate and coffee. Averagely balanced with medium taste spectrum and medium aftertaste with berries and some chocolate. Medium/light body with medium/light carbonation. Overall, raspberry is quite dominating, too light body and in this style I’m not sure about earthy flavor. Otherwise, if you like raspberry, a decent implementation.
3.2 A fair porter. The raspberries are a nice touch I don’t get the chocolate. It certainly makes a pretty glass of brew with its beautiful caramel color.
3.7 On draft at Bigelo’s. Looks like a porter. Deep dark brown. This is full of berries. Raspberries? Some roastiness. A bit of citrus fruit and earth. More of a fruit beer than a porter but tasty stuff.
3.4 Refrigerated 12 oz brown bottle, best by July 13, 2016, poured into an English pint glass. Black with dark brown highlights and small beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, medium body, some carbonation, and some lacing. Taste is roasted malt and a little raspberry.
3.5 Mild raspberry in finish, not significantly tart. Also after best due day. Decent drinkable porter. From Capones.
3.4 12oz bottle from ? Dark brown hue (with reddish tint when held to light), zero visibility with mostly last frothy dark khaki head. Some lacing. Aromas of dark fruit, raspberry and some chocolate malt. This had a bitter raspberry flavor on the first sip with more of a chocolate malt finish. The bitterness died down after the first sip and was a pleasant experience all the way through to the end. Great mouthfeel, crisp on the tongue with a creamy texture. I really liked this one.
3.7 12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, raspberries and grain. Taste is raspberries and chocolate.
3.6 bottle - Pours near black with a small tan head. The aroma is mainly of roasted malt and chocolate with maybe a hint of fruit. It tastes sweet, fruity, and chocolatey. Smooth and tasty. Full bodied. Very good.
3.4 Draft to taster at Fifty West opaque dark brown with thin tan head. Nose light roast, chocolate, minimal dark fruit. Taste initial some chocolate covered orange, and hint of alcohol. Later in palate light roasted malt.
3.6 Sampled at GABF2015. In the tasting glass was dark brown with a beige head. Nose of chocolate and dark ripe fruit including raspberry. Medium body. Flavor is chocolate malts, raspberry, maybe other fruit, and a mildly bitter finish. Good.
4.0 Taste: Dark semi sweet chocolate, toasted malts, raspberry, tart and tangy. Dark brown and semi opaque. Cocoa semi sweet nose. Medium body. Tan ringed lace to head.
2.9 Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head with large bubbles. Aroma of raspberries, cherries, grain, light coffee, earth, malt and a touch of chocolate. Medium-bodied; A touch watery at first with an earthy and nutty flavour that shows some chocolate and a hint of coffee right afterwards, with a thin texture and a rather watery finish. Aftertaste shows some light sugars and mellow fruit, and almost no malt at all to speak of - light. Overall, a decent porter at best. Good intentions all around, and while it smells good, it doesn’t look too great and the watery profile and relatively simple finish make this drinkable if you like the style, but not worth searching for if you don’t - fairly simple here. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom, Eye Street NW) on 11-May-2015 for US$3,49 sampled at home in Washington on 31-October-2015.
4.0 At the Daily. The raspberries I think thinned out the porter a little so that it tempered the rich roastedness, almost like a kind of flemish red that wasn’t all that sour mixed with a porter I"m describing it badly but I thought it was totally delicious. Serving: Tap
3.3 Intersting porter that had a decent bit of raspberries to it. A little early in the season for me though.
3.5 (Bottle). Artificial raspberry aroma. Pours a deep brown with decent head retention. Flavor is decent Porter with added raspberry flavor. Smooth palate. Enjoyed after a Saturday night steak dinner for dessert.
3.2 Bottle: Nearly black with a small tan head. Chocolate, berry aroma. Taste is chocolate malt, black cherry, raspberry. Sweet....a little weak.
2.9 Bottle. Fresh hay and chocolate malt aroma. Dark brown with small head. Lightly sweet chocolate malt and mildly bitter hay flavor. Body light - watery.
3.2 Drank from a pint glass poured from a twelve ounce bottle. Pours black with decent beige head. Has aromas of roasted malts, chocolate but mostly raspberries. Has good complexity to the taste, nice flavors of raspberries, followed with some chocolate. A good, intresting porter!
3.5 Draft. Medium beige head atop dark red-brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, bittersweet/milk chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, some milk chocolate, dark fruit, light berry. Medium body, low carbonation.
3.5 I appreciate the props to Alberta as a native edmontonian. Some raspberry and light roast. Black pour. Lift sweet and bitter finish. Tap at black squirrel.
3.7 Pours deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roast and raspberry. Taste is sweet and tart. Medium bodied, smooth texture and overall very solid.
3.9 The nose is immediately and overwhelmingly raspberries, with shades of chocolate and smokiness but they’re subdued. The aroma sets you up for tart sourness but it never materializes. Some chocolaty malts seem a likely culprit for the smooth, sweet taste with light sourness around the edges. A delightful beer. Poured from a bottle.
3.4 Black pour ruby hue beige head ..... Aroma of raspberry, chocolate and roasted malts .... taste is of tart raspberries, light bitterness and sweet chocolate and roasted malts .... Dry Raspberry and roasted finish ... Mouthfeel is thin .... Decent little porter
3.3 Bottle from Whole Foods PM. Pours hazy blackish brown with tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, cacao, some nuts, hops. Tastes dark malty, with notes of cacao, molasses, nuts, and a smooth finish.
3.3 Draft. Dark black with small tan head. Aroma of raspberries with roasted malt in the background. Medium body, overwhelming blackberries upfront, some chocolate and roasted malt on the finish. Malt and raspberries combine to give more blackberry flavors than raspberry.
3.6 Poured to an event shaker at the WCD Trade Expo 2015 in Chicago, showing a rubied brown color, with a bubbly layer of off white head foam, and spots of lacing. The nose was roasted & cocoa, with a bit of berry sweetness. The roasted nature was enhanced by a bit of smoke & wood in the taste, and some fruity astringency. Medium bodied, with fair carbonation, and a rather tasty disposition.
