Great Lakes Eliot Ness

Great Lakes Eliot Ness

Deep Amber red color, with a fragrant malt aroma. Flavorful notes of rich caramelized malt and noble hop flavors harmonize on the palate leading to a crisp clean finish. Named after one of Cleveland’s most respected safety directors, who frequented the brewpub’s bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes still evident today.

3.8 Took advantage of a recent trip up north to snag a mix pack from Great Lakes Brewing, which is quite possibly my favorite Northeast regional brewery. From the bottle, this well-executed and cleverly named pre-prohibition style amber lager pours a flawless cherry-red amber color with a thick foamy white head, perfect appearance for the style. The nose on the other hand is a pleasant but indistinguishable caramel maltiness with hints of cherry and red fruit, no noticeable hops in the aroma. The taste does bring out a firm noble hop bitterness that undergirds a rich caramel malt profile that melds into a nice earthy bitterness in the finish. Interestingly enough I had this both with and without food, and found that this didn't stand up to the flavor of my accompanying entrees; I would recommend drinking this brew by itself or with something simple like pretzels to fully enjoy the subtle flavors of the malt and hops. Overall another superior brew from Great Lakes!

4.8 Love this beer. Seems like it is almost impossible to find a lager that is not an IPA anymore. This is the best I have found. It is my favorite lighter beer as I normally drinks stouts and porters.
4.6 Bottle. Beautiful red/dark amber color. Malty aroma and flavor. Very smooth and well finished with no off-flavors. Definitely sweet. Clean finish. One of the best malt lagers I've tasted. A stark contrast to the currently vogue high-ABV uber-hoppy IPAs.
4.5 Really good Amber. Really smooth but just enough hop to make it a little different. Easy to drink. I could take down a lot of them. That’s a good thing.... I think
3.6 Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
3.7 Draft pour into shaker glass at German Biergarten, Philly Airport. Aroma is dominant bread with mild roasted malts, mild nuts and mild sugared candy. Appearance is dark brown (like dark iced tea), lots of sparkle and finger-width beige head with lots of soapy lacing. Taste is bread, light toffee, nuts and European hops. Palate is medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, look and feel are great and, while there is some interesting complexity to the aroma/flavor, they aren't quite bold enough to be outstanding.
3.6 Twelve ounce bottle from a very nice variety pack. Easily one of the best amber lagers I have ever had. Thicker than most, a real nice mouthfeel, foamy, nice lacing.,caramel, taste ,malty, copper brown.
3.4 12oz bottle (courtesy of Headbanger) poured into Lager glass at 40°. Color deep clear amber with mellow carbonation and a thin tight off white head. Aroma is a mild sweet scent of caramel and malt. It has a light medium body with a light crisp mouthfeel. Flavor starts with a nice bready malt back with a mild bitterness and hop spice. Aftertaste is clean with an almost fruity note showing briefly. Overall this is very good, its even flavors make it an easy drinking and tasty brew.
3.0 Tastes like spice, and smells slightly like cereal. It’s mellow, and refreshing.
3.3 Pours reddish amber. Nose is light caramel, earth. Taste is caramel, crisp, honey, very lightly bitter, roasty, crisp-ish.
4.0 Surprisingly smooth, with a light bitterness that adds to the flavor.
3.3 Dark gold pour with toffee head. Very malty. Caramel and light bready notes. Decent aftertaste. Not too shabby! Bottle.
3.5 Draft in Virginia. Pours brown gold medium white head. Lots of lacing. Scents of leather and nuts. Taste of solid round malt and nuts. I like it.
4.2 Clear Red amber. Great tasting Malty sweet smooth tasting lager I like Redheads!
4.0 Great amber option. Smooth with a Carmel hint and not overpowering with hops.
4.5 Great malty taste, a classic amber. Great color, thinnish head. Nice and smooth.
5.0 This is the best tasting Amber lager I have ever had, the malty taste is spot on and pairs well with a good cigar!!
3.5 Good lighter beer, can drink multiple and have a good night. Would definitely buy a case for a party or such.
3.5 Pours a deep amber with a medium white head which is gone quickly.......aroma is just earthy......taste is mild, woody, earthy, finishes dry.
3.6 12 oz bottle with a fill date of 11/2017. Pours with a clear, dark copper body topped by a good off-white head. Some lacing. Lightly sweet with sweet malts dominating subtle spicy hops. Medium-full body with near medium carbonation.
3.0 12 oz. bottle from Tops in Lewiston, NY. Pours a crystal clear copper color with a khaki head and very good retention. Fair lacing. Caramel malt aroma. Strong caramel malt flavor mixed with some bitter hops in the finish. Crisp mouthfeel. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Okay, but too bitter for an amber lager for me, giving it a slightly harsh finish. The 6.1% ABV is well hidden.
4.3 Pours Amber and translucent with a tan/off-white head with an aroma of caramel malt. Tastes of caramel malt with mild hop bitterness, yeast with a hint of lager acetic acid. There is a little booze in the finish as well. It’s medium bodied with lively carbonation. The hops are earthy, fresh and resinous and mostly absent of bitter pine which balances well with the malt. It finishes dry. This is more robust than expected.
3.7 malty strong flavor. medium body, but not mind blowing. its quite good though.
3.6 Pours a slight red color with a creamy but sparse head and average lacing. Candy aroma, like honey? Slightly aqueous. Flavorful! Not bad.
3.5 Pours a mostly clear golden brown from the bottle with bubbly white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of mild bready sweetness and a touch of citrus and earthy hop notes. Taste is toasted and caramel malt notes over a clean hoppy finish, but not bitter. Solid for what it is.
4.0 Need to try it when I am not so buzzed. But I like it quite a bit at the moment. A nice hop forward with a nice long-lasting bitter finish. Slightly nutty
3.0 12floz, BBD: 09.27.2017, ~$1.75 unit equivalent, pint glass. An amber lager with clarity and small dirty white head. Corn flake and caramel sets the tone in the aroma, and further in the full bodied palate. I find this to be too heavy handed, it could be a bit thinner in body and be a fine session beer. Instead it feels like a syrupy malt bomb.Perhaps if I look at this more as a Marzen or American amber, then it works as a worthy beer for certain moments.
4.4 It's a very good session-able beer. I will always be happy to sit back with a six pack and a Fire and friends and drink this nice malty Vienna lager. Or to have it with Chinese as I just did.
3.3 Bottle, Ann Arbor, MI. Murky amber. Metallic caramel aroma. Sweet, full bodies. All malt. Slight pepper finish.
