Great Lakes The Doppelrock

Great Lakes The Doppelrock

Round and malty, our doppelbock lager (German for "double bock") celebrates the style originally developed by medieval monks. Just as the monks appreciated this hearty brew in the late winter/early spring, we savor the flavors of this rich beer along with a double dose of our favorite pastime, rock and roll.

In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water. No chemicals or preservatives are used.

3.9 Bottle @ Brad’s house Minneapolis. Pours a somewhat hazy, reddish brown appearance with a bubbly, brown head. A touch smoky, rich, caramel/Caramunich malty, somewhat sugary, brown sugar aroma that is pretty appetizing. A touch thin mouth feel but delicious toasty malty flavor with notes of meaty smoke, toffee, caramel, and light chocolate. One of the better American-made Doppelbocks that I’ve had.
3.6 Bottle thanks to BlackIPA. Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose/taste of caramel malt, roasted pecan toast, clove, toffee, hay, grass and light molasses. Finishes clove/molasses. Medium body.
3.6 12 oz bottle purchased at the North End Market in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Enjoy by 05/29/12 printed on label. The pour is a hazed brown golden with a light tan head. The aroma is sweet toffee caramel malt with a nice hay grassiness underneath. The taste is chewy malt, nutty earthy, toffe caramel, then hay grass and mineral. Some clove herbal yeast in the finish. Palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and a hint of alcohol in the finish. Nice Doppelbock
3.8 THOUGHTS: A great doppelbock. Very malty with just the right amount of noticeable alcohol. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark red that was nearly brown in the glass with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma contained moderate to heavy molasses and caramel; lighter grain; slight roasted malt; apple; cherry; brown sugar; maple syrup; and slight alcohol. The initial flavor was heavily sweet and slightly acidic; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet and slightly sour. There was molasses, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, a little cherry and apple, honey, alcohol, and a little grain. The slightly more than medium body was a little oily but more syrupy and sticky on the lips with tingly carbonation and a light alcoholic finish.
3.1 On tap at Acadia Cafe in MSP. Strong brown sugar and spice aroma. Thin translucent brown. Mild sweet initial, some raisins and dark sugars. Medium body. A bit thin, overall. Hides the alcohol well.
4.0 Served in a pint glass. Pours a rich clear brown with a finger light tan head. Aroma is toffee, brown sugar, caramel, smoked malts, and a touch of faint pine. Flavor is sweet at first. Caramel and brown sugar at first, than it gives way to roasted barley and smoke. Mouthfeel is sort of thinner and alcohol is hidden well. Really good doppelbock.
3.7 Cola colored beer out of the bottle with a thin whisp of a head on the surface. Big sweet nose with some molasses and roast grains. Very malty beer with some roast grains, smoke, molassas, brown sugar and some burnt buttered toast. Decent sweet double bock.
3.2 On draft at Capone’s in Philadelphia. The beer is transparent and amber hued with crimson highlights. The aroma brings sweet malts, as well as a light fruit and nut character. The beer is sweet and malt forward, with a subtle earthy taste. The body is rather thin. The finish is dry with a hint of hop bitterness. A decent brew, but a bit too thin and sweet for me. 4.1 A very good dopplebock. Every time I have this style of beer I’m pleasantly surprised. I think I’m too hop-forward with my beer styles lately. This one is a keeper.
3.6 12oz bottle to glass. Great aroma - nutty toffee aroma and I got slight chocolate?? nice brown/amber pour. Taste was good - preferred cold vs. warmer - as it warms too much of the alcohol comes through. solid brew
3.6 12oz bottle from Armanetti’s. Pours a clear, deep brown colored body with a pretty reddish hue. Finger-width, creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is big and round malts with lots of bready caramels, tootsie roll chocolates, a touch of molasses, brown sugar, and plenty of nuts. Some raisins and plums, a hint of earth, and just the slightest roast hint. Flavor is similar. Very smooth and soft, full malts throughout with a nice drying bitterness to balance. Plenty of bready caramels and cocoa nibs with some nutty toasts, a touch of molasses, and some brown sugar. Light roast notes come along in the middle with some raisins, plums, and a light earth. Finishes very smooth and malty, but dries cleanly and nicely thanks to the light roast and earth notes. Fairly lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, medium-full body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid doppelbock. Very smooth and malty with a nice caramel, cocoa, nutty toast, dark fruit, and balancing roast and earthiness. Not overly sweet or sticky at all. Good one.
3.5 Sampled from growler from shigadeyo. Pours a clear deep copper color with a thin beige film. The aroma had sweet malts, caramel, mild roasted notes, lightly grainy with some toasted bread. The flavor went back and forth between the toasted malts and the sweeter caramel malts. Some char and biscuity notes at the finish with a light hint of coffee. Soft carbonation, but this did come from a growler.
4.5 Pours clear dark mahogany with a medium-to-large tan head. Smells of raisins and caramel, and some mild biscuit. Taste is sweet and a little bitter, like coffee, and a touch fruity. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Great Lakes The Doppelrock finishes with a tiny bitter kick.
3.1 Check out the double neck guitar on the label. Pretty sweet. Doppelrock is also pretty sweet, or in other words, it tastes like it has a lot of sugary ingredients. I picked up mostly on the caramel flavor. It was too sweet for my tastes, although, with a doppelbock you’re signing up for double regular dose of bock sweetness. Dark brown-red color, lots of bubbles, and a caramel-molasses smell.
3.8 12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark mahogany color with a small tan head. A sweet toasted malt and caramel nose. A sweet caramel and light mocha flavor, some light banana, very smooth, big sweetness. Vanilla.
3.4 Bottle, this beer had a clear dark red pour (there was some sediment swirling around in the glass) with an initial two finger high off-white head, the effervescence was pretty lively with many streams of bubbles flowing in the glass, it left some spots and fingers of lacing on the glass, there was lots of malt aroma of bread and melanoidins, bread and candy/caramel like sweetness, this beer had generous sweetness, the flavors were toasted malt, some melanoidins, a little raisin, caramel and candy sweetness, there was no hop bitterness, just a little alcohol bite on the palate, there was a touch of alcohol warmth on the palate, the mouth feel was less than medium (thinner than what I would expect for a doppelbock), this beer is pretty sweet on the nose but not so on the palate, a good drink, I can see this beer as a sneaker as it feels light on the palate.
3.2 Gym sock and walnut smell. Clear auburn, thick yellow head. Flavor is walnut and cola. Not cloying, balanced for the style.
3.0 Bottle @ 18th RG. Clear medium brown with tan foamy head. Smells like wheat bread in plastic. Tastes like good bread. High carbonation with sweet finish.
3.7 Poura dark brown with ruby hues...medium tan head...nice retention/lacing. Aroma has some sweet maltiness and tea notes. Flavor has some fruity raisin notes and chocolatey roastiness. Mouthfeel is full and lively with a roasty chocolate/earthy dry finish.
3.7 Pours a rich dark brownish black with a nice head. Nose is malty, toasty and chocolatey . Taste is rich in mocha and malty, and drinks very easily. Finish is dry and sweet, actually quite thirst quenching, like all lagers. Pleasant enough doppelbock. Quaff Score 7/ 10
3.5 Pours a dark amber with an off white head and aroma of chocolate and malts. Taste is toasty, of roasted malts, chocolate, and caramel with a creamy mouthful and smooth finish. Drinkable, solid, enjoyable brew.
3.5 Bottle from Three Cellars. Pours reddish brown (brownish red?) with a mostly white head. Some nice wedding dress lacing on the sides. Aroma has super sweet syrupy caramel, rum raisin and nuts with some earthiness. Taste is of sweet toffee, brown sugar, dark fruits, fizzy lemonade and grain. Very, very sweet and thick. Finishes sweet with some sourness. A doppel without doughiness/breadiness that is still thick. Interesting. Too sweet to be a preferred one.
3.0 aroma: chocolate, coffee, appearance: brown, black, cloudy, taste: medium bitterness, palate: light body, creamy, Not a huge doppelbock fan, but I like this enough to have again.
3.3 Pours a dark amber with a full beige head. Darker aroma consisting of raisin, caramel, nuts, pepper, and bread. Aroma is heavier in raisin and nuts, a bit spicy, and some chocolate notes underneath. More full in body than the average beer and feels thicker when drinking. Not bad, but this wouldn’t be my first choice.
3.9 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 5/29/2012. Pours very cloudy reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice thick cap that lasts. Some decent soapy lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of raisin, caramel, prune, molasses, biscuit, toasted malt, nuttiness, chocolate, pepper, earth, and light herbal spiciness. Nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of raisin, prune, caramel, molasses, bread, toasted malt, honey, chocolate, earth, nuttiness, and light herbal spiciness. Big malt flavors on the finish with some spiciness; with lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, biscuit, chocolate, and toast on the finish for a bit. Flavors were not as robust as I was hoping for, but were still extremely balanced with good complexity. No cloying sweetness at all; with a slightly dry finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel which is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed at all after the finish. Very easy to sip on. Overall this is a really nice doppelbock. Nice flavor balance with good complexity; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
3.5 dark brown with medium head. rich malts with lots of body. caramel is pretty strong. pretty darn good.
3.4 Aroma of brown sugar/molasses, chocolate and nougat. Appearance was dark caramel with tan head. Flavor matched the nose, with an emphasis on fudge-y chocolate. Palate was bubbly. Solid, but not a standout.
4.3 rated higher but made an error, which tells me that his rating is legit. the doppelrock rocks
4.1 Wow, a big and wine-like doppel with some references to Edmund Fitzgerald. There’s the dark winey fruit, with some chocolate, tobacco and earthiness, topped with a bit of lemon-like acidity. Full feel at room temperature, with notable alcohol. Has some barnyardy hay/manure aromas, not as much as some Bavarian examples. I still consider this a USA-style Doppel but a very good one! One of the best beers of late.
2.4 I’m not a fan is this style apparently...Big malt bomb that tastes like dirt to me. Palate is very flat. Heavy and I can’t tell why. Confirmed with my friend jcos that it was good for the style, so I guess it’s just not my thing.
