Green Flash Hop Odyssey Black IPA

Green Flash Hop Odyssey Black IPA

This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85
Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

3.5 Good retention and medium lacing. Smells of molasses, roasted caramel and floral. Tastes of roasted malts, floral and bitter hop resin. Bitter aftertaste.
3.8 Creamy head, hoppy aroma. First it hits you with a coffee note then it goes along with a classic citrussy taste. Moderate sweetness, medium biterness. Creamier than Raven from Thornbridge which is good. This is how black ipa should be done. Very good!
4.2 Re-he-Healy loved the hop combo used here, as well as the Carmel malt atop the black roasted and chocolate. Hop leaning, which is just fine by me, and the most grapefruity citric yummy black ipa I’ve tried in some time."
3.6 650ml bottle from Valhalla’s Goat. Almost black, good head. Tar hop aroma. Tar boiled sweet & hop flavour. Bitter sweet peppery hoppy aftertaste. Good but I expected better.
3.5 65cl bottle. Pours black with a big beige head. Moderate fruity hoppy aroma. Flavor is moderate bitter and has quite strong notes of roasted malt balanced very well by nice fruity hops notes and citrus.
4.2 Pours deep black with a creamy off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Faint roasted notes and a whiff of hops on the nose. This follows through well into the palate with a nice dark chocolate bitterness, though it is slightly one noted. This doesn’t detract too much as it’s a great note. The finish is somewhat creamy with a hint of sweetness. Perfect weight and mouthfeel. Slickity do da day. On tap at The Guild Freehouse. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone

3.7 Bottle @ Champ League Kval. Aab - Apoel. Pours black with a creamy head and lacings. Roast, pine and coffee roast. Smooth and dry. Actually past its BB date although its a newly imported beer to Denmark. Thankfully its holding up pretty well. Bitter finish.
3.8 Bottle @ AaB vs Apoel CL tasting. Dark brown body with a medium light brown head. Hops, roasted malt, grapefruit, pine. Nice bitter end.
3.6 A - dark like a brown ale with an off white head A - hoppy aroma that hits your nose with citrus and west coast pineapple T - great malt backbone with a hoppy finish M - well carbonated with a two finger head O - great black IPA that I would buy again.
3.6 The piny, floral aroma is rich but not too aggressive. The flavor contains pine, tobacco, resin, rye, and wheat bran. It is smoky, lightly acidic, and nicely balanced with no screwy sweet notes. Black IPA isn’t my favorite style, but this is a good one.
3.8 Color caoba oscuro con densa espuma beige. Aromas de frutas tropicales, pino y tostados. Cuerpo medio con inicio afrutado y lúpulo "picante" con un final amargo, seco y resinoso. Excelente.
4.3 On draft: nice dark red black color , small head, nice lacy legs, wonderful aroma filled with chocolate Hops . Round chocolate hops taste, round and smooth . Very well balanced
3.5 Black pour orange hue, thin off white to beige head and sticky striped lacing ....aroma of roasted and bitter hops with a nice piney, floral and citrusy punch .... taste is roasted and bitter with a floral, piney and citrusy punch ... Has a dry roasted and bitter finish with a nice lingering piney hop ... Very solid black ipa
3.3 7/10/14. Bomber. Pours black with a light mocha head that gives nice lacing. Nice hop nose but not overwhelming. Disappointing mouth with not much complexity. Mild roasty and hop notes but not real interesting. Classic West Coast profile but nothing that sets it apart.
3.7 Bottle 1pt. 6fl.oz. @ home. [ As Green Flash Hop Odyssey Black ]. Clear dark red brown color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, off-white to light light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, light chocolate and coffee, moderate to heavy hoppy, grapefruit, light pine. Flavour is moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a long duration, coffee, chocolate, hoppy, pine, hop and malt bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20140531]
3.8 Bottle from Vinspecialisten, Aalborg. Black with a big light brown head. Aroma is dry, roasted malt and moderate hoppy - pine. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 070714
4.0 22oz. bottle, best by 7/21/14, has been kept refrigerated, though. Aroma of lightly roasty, gently sweet malts and fruity, piney hops, with notes of milk chocolate, citrus, black bread and a touch of grapefruit, along with a certain pungency in the background. Clear deep, dark brown in color, nearly black, with a lasting, creamy, fine, beige head. Flavor profile is fairly complex and well-balanced, with suggestions of rich, dark, roasty and sweet malts, piney, citric and generously bitter hops, finishing with a blend of malt toast and mild tropical fruit, some floral tones and faint bubblegum underneath here as well. Smooth, full, resinous and lushly effervescent on the palate with a medium-full body. Very nicely put together, great example of the style.
3.7 Draft: Strong grapefruit and tangerine aroma. If I closed my eyes I wouldn’t gues this is an IDA, save for a subtle soil note. Clear ruby black, thin tan head. Charcoal, grapefruit, and onion flavor. Brief appearanc of rosehips in the end that isn’t evident within the sronger malt notes. Good mix of hop and roast biterness. Light body, harshly fizzy. Pretty intense, not quaffable.
3.5 Deep black with a slight bit of translucent character. Nose is wet hops, pine, and fruit. Smooth mouthfeel with a hint of roast up front that leads to good hoppy bite. Not overwhelming but has good depth.
3.6 Cascade in aroma bit porter burnt in aroma.Roastiness. Thick foam. Burnt in taste but lightly. Longlasting bitterness aftertaste for 85 IBU very nice.
4.3 Black murky pour with a few inches of healthy beige head. Strong pleasant nose of rye, tropical fruit punch mix is strong, pollen as well. Very soft carbonation, foamy but sticky mouthfeel, very clean finish. Amazing mix between hoppiness and dark malts. The ryeish malts are really rich but not too bitter, chocolatey malts come out as well. Hop profile is just enough pine with a very tropical emphasis. One of the best cascadian black ales I have had.
3.5 Bomber. Clear hueless darkest dark brown, creamy tan foam settles and mostly lasts. Coniferous floral citrus hoppy aroma. Dark roast taste, mild caramel, herbal pine hoppiness increases as it warms, some citrus. Average carbonation, medium bodied, well hopped. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)
3.7 Shared bomber from Sicilianos to Hop Cat shakers. Very dark stout-like pour. Sweet aroma. Very balanced. Maybe a little more malt forward. Bitter after bite. Fantastic.
3.8 Belle couleur brun fonce, rouge orange en transparence. Mousse peu persistante.
3.7 22 oz. bottle purchased at On the Vine for $7.99 with a best before 7/22/14 stamped on the neck. Color is dark brown nearly black when held to the sunlight. Aroma is bold pine and citrus hops. Earthy pine resin. Thin tan head that left spiderweb lace down the side. Flavor is balanced. Burnt chocolate malts and barely with a touch of citrus. The pine resin lingers for a good duration after the sip. Nice light chocolate malts help with the balance, also has a light floral hop flavor as well. Body is a tad on the light side but it’s not a negative. Carbonation is moderate with a very dry finish. Awesome brew and I enjoyed this a lot. If you like this style this is a damn nice example, go get some, I could drink a boat load of this, flavorful and worth the money.
3.5 Bomber bought @ biere-revolution.com. Pours reddish dark brown with a frothy brownish beige head that leaves lots of spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty, fruity, tiny herbal and slightly earthy with caramel, roasted malts, grapefruit juice, dried pineapple, mango, moist soil, dark roast coffee, burnt wood, pine needles, orange zest, lemon zest and sweet liquorice candy. Taste is sweet, bitter, tiny fruity, slightly herbal and slightly earthy with roasted malts, grapefruit rinds, lemon balm, pine needles, burnt wood, dark roast coffee, roasted cereal, overripe tropical fruits, liquorice root, winegums and moist soil. Mouthfeel is round, soft, slightly astringent and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and earthy with roasted malts, grapefruit rinds, rasisins, dark roast coffee, pine needles, resinous wood, orange peal, lemon balm, moist soil and liquorice root. Solid unspectakular Black IPA.
3.5 Bottle @ BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Thick brown-black pour, little head. Solid, fairly hard BIPA, not creamy. Not for the faint hearted.
3.8 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of rich pine/resin hops, floral, & citrus; Flavor of roasted malt, pine hops, caramel, citrus, and some chocolate; Finish is bitter; Nicely balanced; Nice.
3.6 Bottle. Clear red-brown coloured with a huge off-white head. Roasted and hoppy aroma of grass and pine needles. Roasted and hoppy flavour of licorice and grass. Hoppy finish.
