Greenbush Brother Benjamin

Greenbush Brother Benjamin

This beer was developed as a collaboration with Mark Richman, the lucky winner of the Taste of the Nation "brewer for a day" silent auction item. This is one monster of an imperial IPA, brewed with a bit of honey and beet sugar.

3.8 On tap at Howells and Hood. Pours an almost clear amber color with small off-white head and little lacing. Aroma has pine resin, citrus, and honey. Taste is initially bitter with a dry finish, but the honey and caramel malts in the middle are so noticeable that I would call this one malt-forward. Body is medium with soft carbonation and a sticky syrupy mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden.
3.8 Very strong beer!! This is a great beer to sip with a good Connecticut cigar. You can definitely taste the fermented honey in this beer.
3.7 Botella 33 cl en el Kraken 18..11..2017. (r193). Lote y fcpref ilegibles en etiqueta. Color ámbar miel turbio con espuma blanca persistente. Sabores dulces intensos maltosos y cereales con suaves toques melosos y melaza. Suaves afrutados y poco amargo. Cuerpo medio a intenso con buena sensación alcohólica desde el principio. Denso y espumoso. Bastante buena para repetir sin duda.
3.8 Sampled at Big Muddy Beer Fest. Deep golden. Beige foam. Honey gold, literally. Honey is tadted plus delicious hops. Citrus plus floral. Earth. Malts stay out of the way. Pale? Really nice. Sweet and it offers light bitterness.
4.1 Delicadamente equilibrada.
Aroma a caramelo, resina, pino, miel, vainilla, cítricos.
3.6 On tap at the brewpub. Initial aroma said "this is going to be too bitter for you to like". However, I plowed ahead and was pleasantly rewarded with an IPA that was fairly well balanced. The sugar really cuts through the hops without overwhelming them. However, the fact that they are there doesn’t make this beer come off as TOO sweet. It’s really pretty good.
3.8 At Howells and Hood. In a snifter. Pours caramel brown with no head. Big malty brown sugar hop taste of a double IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.6 Bottle, Ann Arbor, MI. Hazy amber. Herbal caramel aroma with mild resin. Clove and Treacle flavor. Long finish.
3.5 Poured into pint glass. Little head and lacing. Rich deep brown color. Raisin aroma. Sits lightly on the tongue for imperial IPA. Dried fruity flavor up front that packs a punch to finish.
3.2 bottle @ Krg Liquors / Clarksville IN --- MFG:06.20.16 --- Aroma of dark malt. Clear bright amber brown color, beige head that stays at 1", strips of lace. Taste is malt and dark molasses, medium fizz, and a shot of hops to bring things well into balance. Then a brief burst of alcohol warmth. Nothing special here, just a strong, alcoholic IPA that is only okay.
3.2 7th September 2016 T42 tasting on me Birfaday. Big thanks to Leighton. Very hazy amber beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Palate is smooth, mildly dry and has decent fine carbonation. Caramel - toffee malts, light creamy sweetness. Orange marmalade and mild hop spice. Soft dry finish. A bit malt forward and lacking any hop brightness, but it’s okay.
3.0 September 2016 - Bottle share at One Canada Square. As ’Greenbush Brother Benjamin’, 10.1%. Thanks LKS! Orange brown, hazy and still, foamy tan head leaves dotted lacing. Aroma is floral, chalky, touch of TCP, boiled sweets. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is sugar syrup, boiled sweets, more sugary than malty, pine and resinous hops, some tangy booze. Quite sweet. Alright for a booze and sugar bomb. (3.0)
3.4 Bottle split at Level 42, thanks to LKS, 07/09/16. Murky amber with a moderate off white head. Nose is dank hop, herbal, straw, harsh citric rinds, caramel. Taste comprises bitter tropical fruits, orange rind, pine resin, sharp citric. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with aggressive hop bitterness. Ok DIPA if a touch overly harsh.
2.9 Bottle shared at the level 42 tasting 7/9/2016. A dull hazed amber brown coloured pour a fading halo of white head . Aroma is semi sweet jammy fruits, spicy wood, toffee, burnt. Flavour is nutty malts, apple, vanilla, mint, sticky jammy fruits, caramel, toffee. Little barley wine. Palate is medium sweet moderate carbonation. Nit a fan.
3.3 Bottle shared in London in honor of Kenny’s birthday. Pours unclear ruby-orange with a frothy, off-white head. The nose has lots of toasted crackers, caramel, earth. Medium to heavy sweet flavour with lots of ripe, jammy citrus, orange, marmalade, earth, wood, caramel. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming and resinous on the finish, with lots of bready malts, earth, oily pine. So so overall.
3.2 Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours cloudy dirty amber with a small yellow - white head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, malt - driven, caramel, toffee, butterscotch and sweet fruits. The taste is smooth, sweet, sticky, malt - driven, earthy, toasted grain, peach, apricot, nectarine, booze, lemonade, grapefruit, toffee and butterscotch with a dry finish. Medium - full body and fine carbonation. A bit sweet and malty. Fair.
4.1 Bottle shared by a friend. Clear red pour with a thick off-white head. Aroma of malt, citrus and piney hops. Malty and citrusy flavor with a rich malty finish.
3.6 Big DIPA that was huge on caramel, pine, and honey flavor. Copper colored, fairly sticky feeling but still tasty.
3.6 From bottle (4/22/15). Sweet caramel with piney hop notes and a little oxidation. Fusels and cherry wood. Dark caramel amber hazy with thin creamy honey-colored lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet with caramel, nice hop flavor and moderate bitterness. Light woody notes with bitter finish and big bitter after.
3.7 On tap at Howells & Hood. Hazy amber with a medium head. Fresh and hoppy with grapefruit, pineapple, hay and some hints of cookies. The finish was bitter. A tasty one.
3.7 Bottle poured into a snifter..copper with a fluffy white head..aroma of pine,caramel,resin,honey.. Tastes of pine,honey,booze,resin..good stuff
3.9 Bottled 08/20/15. Pours golden dark honey color, white head, really pretty. Aroma is boozy, dank hops, pine, light tropical pineapple, honey, sweet sugar. Flavor is wow, sweet sugar, that beet sugar is there. Definitely quite a bit of heat, burns the back of the throat, mild pine and some pineapple citrus notes. Wow, basically a barleywine. Bit of a bitter finish, that intensifies a bit, but never gets unpleasant. I like it. Feels like I could age it a bit and it would be fine.
4.1 Poured from the four pack of bottles, looks brown with some red in the back round, foamy white collar. There are a lot of hops in here but the sweetness is unsettling, I was expecting an imperial IPA not another style. I would guess the suggestion is that Benjamin was schizophrenic, where he lives his life as an IPA but has many characteristics of a barley wine. Life can be complicated like that.
4.0 12oz bottle pours a thick brown color with a bit of head. Total malt bomb. Smooth and nice hop balance. Alcohol well hidden.
3.4 Lightly hazed umber color with a smooth, creamy looking taupe colored head. Good retention. Heavy caramels and malts mingle with earthy hops. Scents of light herbs and spices. Smells a bit more like a hoppy barley wine, but I won’t complain. Sweet start with light fruit, and citrus. Pine and apricot mingle. Finish is fairly short and linger is hot and bitter. Much more an American strong or barley wine. But I still enjoyed it.
3.6 12oz bottle, shared by dwm1034. Thanks! Pours a hazy amber color with a white head. Aroma is hoppy, floral, grassy. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, very sweet, honey, some bread, nutty, light pine hops, light citrus, orange, pineapple, with a light, bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle the better half brought back from Michigan. True love. Copper color with thin white head. Nose is sharp hops with intial taste much smoother than expected. A hint of the high booze content. Very tasty.
4.8 Great double ipa. Almost like a fresh hopslams style brew. Very enjoyable with the honey balance.
3.6 Orange mahogany with an ample tan head. Unsurprising strong floral, honey notes, tangerine. Fairly bitter, though quickly overwhelmed by cloying sweetness. Transitions to a more typical biscuity malt finish, though the initial sweetness still persists throughout. Very oily, medium body. Quite upfront alcohol. Not much carbonation. Not particularly well balanced, though not without some interesting flavors.
