Greene King Strong Suffolk / Olde Suffolk

Greene King Strong Suffolk / Olde Suffolk

Bottle: Filtered.

Dark Ale

Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.

A blend of two ales: Old 5X, which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Bottles have been cold filtered rather than pasteurised since May 2006.

4.0 Very dark brown with a head that vanishes quickly. The aroma includes raisins, madeira, caramel and... leather! Bitterness is strong enough, with a faint black toffee component to balance it. But overall, the beer is quite dry - with a vague hint of fino sherry at the very end. This almost syrupy ale could definitely hold its own against very rich food. Much fuller and more warming than the relatively modest ABV would lead you to expect. Excellent!
3.6 A nice beer, has a nice varied complexity to it with a lot of different flavours coming together. Could use a little more full body to make it all come together perfectly. Craft beer store dresden
4.1 Bottle at home – originally from ASDA ? Really pronounced nose on this one – fruity, currants, raisins, plums and fruitcake generally. Pours a rich ruby red with a creamy (artificially induced) head. More fruit (apples, blackcurrants, plums) in the mouth, together with an underlying ginger and malt flavouring. Carbonation is low – doesn’t detract from the taste. Finish is just the same, but it goes up into the roof of the mouth which wasn’t previously affected. A wonderful complex beer – to be savoured.
2.7 Bottle - as Strong Suffolk Dark Ale. Darkish, reddy brown with decent off white head - though thin. Strong fruity aroma. 6% beer but tastes stronger. Slight ting on tongue - a sipping beer for me - too strong tasting for regular drinking.
4.1 Aus der Flasche 2015-08 getrunken. Ein alter Bekannter nur im neuen Gewand. Vollmundiges, dunkles Englisches Starkbier. Extrem süffig - Klasse!
3.4 Rami Rami is drinking a Strong Suffolk Vintage Ale (2014) by Greene King at Konstruktorska Business Center Karmel, chleb, sherry, susz, ciemne owoce, kawa melanoidyny... beczki nie czuje. slodkie... malo mi ciala. Dlugie posmaki. Zlozone. Dobre Rami Rami: no dobra, z minusem, meczy cukrem
3.6 Bottle, 330 ml @ The Old Fishing Shack. Aged beers are nice man! I thought why i would like to taste oak in beers before. But i support it, big time. It gives some kind of whiskey/rum deepness to the ales. This has an especially rich baking spices tone. Dark brown with reddish shade. Complex aromas of biscuit, caramel, sweet chocolate and baking spices with cloves and cinnamon. Whiskey undertone, quite interesting. On the palate this whiskey-feeling is more permanent. Typical British-taste palate with this oakey deepness inside. A bit hot after the swallow gives this whiskey-feeling again. Long and present aftertaste. This is my 2nd oak aged beer today, and i really enjoy it.
3.3 Sampled from a 16 oz clear bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a large soapy light tan head that lingered. The aroma was sweet and malty with molasses, a bit of wood and a hint of fruit. The flavor was toasty malts, wood, molasses, toffee and fruit. Medium length finish. Medium body.
3.7 dark brown with thin head. smell is very complex with lot going on. fruity, oaky, coffee, smokey. taste is same with some whisky notes and woodiness. yummy
3.9 330ml bottle, drunk from a snifter. Cloudy chocolate coloured beer with a thin tan head. Scrumptious aromas of coffee, rich malt, molasses and rye bread. Toffee, sweet breads, spicy orange peel, vanilla and woody oak. Low carbonation levels accentuate the flavours. Slightly sweet finish with a noticeable hop bitterness that is well balanced. Unlike many of their other products, Greene King really nailed this beer.
4.0 From Labirratorium. In Ikea's pint glass. Playing Avernum 2. Nice plums notes and a superb, moreish palate. Body may be a bit light, but a well adjusted bitterness compensates it fairly well. Leaves a really pleasant and long aftertaste. Low on foam
4.1 Clear dark brown, fading cappuccino head. Caramel, balanced roasted malt notes, hint of chestnut honey. Fulfilling taste, caramel, dark cherry liquor, caramel, honey. Fairly sweet.
3.4 500ml clear embossed bottle. Clear amber pour. Aroma is leathery dark fruits and a large blast of oak, caramel, wine. Flavor is a touch sweet, peperry and herbal, touch watery, decent.
3.8 Piwo wypite jakiś czas temu. Ocena wystawiona na podstawie wspomnień z degustacji, w ramach uzupełnienia profilu.
4.6 Pours dark brown with red reflexes accompanied by a medium quite long lasting tan head. Aroma is caramel, rich fruits. The lasting woody aroma. Tasty one.
3.9 L: -pours a clear ruby-brown with a small to medium,foamy,sand-coloured head -medium carbonation visible S: -plums,raisins,syrupy,dates,cooked potatoes T: -Follows the nose + spicy, bready -finishes dry F: -medium carbonation -light to medium body -slight alcohol noticeable O: A really good Ale.It reminded me of some Doppelbocks in profile.I kinda missed the Toffee flavours/Aromas i get a lot in English Ale styles.
3.7 (brun-rubis, nez mélasse, cuir, dark miel, ~herbes, pomme caramélisée, back amer boisé-fumé, fin sèche)
2.9 330ml Bottle: Pours a dark brown, almost black with garnet highlights. Thin tan head that does not retain. Aromas of tobacco, molasses and a slight sherry note as well. Molasses dominates the flavour with hints of roast and smoke in the background. Bitterness is low, beer is sweet. Medium to full bodied, low carbonation. Overall a little sweet for me but some interesting flavours.
3.6 Bottle as a gift from Emma and Rob, 5th January 18. Pours dark brown, aroma is dark fruit, brown sugar, hops. Taste is caramel, some bitterness, bitter and sweet. Quite nice.
3.2 Bottle. Pours an opaque dark red with a fading off white bubbly head. Aroma is of caramel, biscuit, dark fruits, plum, raisins. Taste is of caramel, toffee, raisins, figs, plums, bready, hint of warming spice. Light oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation.
3.7 Ciemmobrązowe z miedzianymi refleksjami. Aromat bardzo ziołowy, odrobinę w sos sojowy. Bardzo przyjemnie rozgrzewający alkohol, trochę metaliczność, ziołowe, lekko ściągające język taniny. Dobre
3.6 A: Reddish-black with a small, of-white head N: Plums and black coffee T: Plums again. Bitter dark Belgian chocolate P: Medium-thin O: Well-made dark ale
3.2 Bottle from Seiyu. Pours dark reddish brown, caramel coloured. Some foam that is gone quickly. Tastes lightly bitter, lots of caramel and luckily not too sweet. Some herbal thing going on, bit of liquorice. Overall, not really that impressive, a bit watery and caramelly. Not too bad either.
3.7 In spite of the dull appearance and mon existing head, this is a masterbrew in this segment of beer. This is just about one of the best old ales out there. Good balance and spice, makes this my goto winter pint.
3.3 Bottle. Dark ruby with a small, short-lived head. Aroma of malts, toffee and red fruits. Reminds me a little bit of Port and Sherry. Taste is malts, caramel, red fruits (cherries, cassis), toffee and some wood. Sourish fruity. Dry finish. Balanced. Low to medium carbonation. It's alright but for whatever reason I had higher expectations.
3.3 Bottle. Dark brown color. Toffee in the malty, vinous aroma. Full bodied. Malt, toffee and hints of oak and wine in the flavor. Maybe a bit sticky, but well balanced. Would love to try the stock ale straight from cask.
