3.0 This is a beer that is a bit odd. Amber coloured and clear. Has a white head, medium duration. Aroma is sweet and has some acidic notes too. Flavor is starting sweet, has some fruity notes. Lactic acid? Lively carbonation.
3.3 light sour milch aroma,red/amber, clear, off white foam, light sweetness, medium bitterness, light body, creamy, soft carbonation, nice dry finish.
3.1 Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Amber colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate.
3.1 From BA (Oct 2007): Brown 33cl bottle. Best before 25th Jan 2006. I only bought it in September this year, bloody cheek, I obtained it from a shop in Middlekirke, Belgium. I didn’t think to look at the date. Anyway I poured it into one of my Leffe glasses and it came out looking like this: A slightly hazy amber toffee colour with a fine thick creamty head which was an off white biege colour. Yet again I fail to find the esters others claim, toffee apples and malted barley is all I got. Not really sweet, but that toffee feeling is in there along with some caramel. There is a bite to the taste though, this is not a smooth Dubbel like Westmalle for instance, this is more robust, or of course it might be going off because it is so old? There is a lingering of flavours and the alcohol is there throughout the drink, it is however fairly thin for a true Dubbel and lacks the richness normally found. Although it isn’t a great Dubbel it is still a very nice beer and I would have no problem having another (in date if possible), it is more than ’drinkable’.
3.7 Clear brown with red glow and ok beige head. Aroma is nice overripe fruit, raisins and malts. Taste same, sweet. Good body and carbonation.
3.0 Bottle: I found this old receipt saying I bought a bottle once, many many years ago in Belgium. I have to be honest and don’t seem to remember much of what this beer looked like, smelled like and tasted like. So I have to pass on typing a correct review, most likely leaving that or for later and/or for other people around here. I remember it wasn’t that bad, but it wasn’t any good either. Kind of regular and normal for Grimbergen. It’s ok.
3.7 fles 33cl Kleur: amber met een mooie witte schuimkraag. Geur: zoet/zuur, fruitig. Appel? Smaak: Fruitig en zoet, eindigend in bitter. Aangenaam
4.4 chocolate, floral, dough, raisin, vanilla, sparkling, brown, frothy, rocky head, medium sweetness, very bitter, medium body, average carbonation, astringent, bitter,
2.5 bottle from jaghana. Amber-golden, white head. Vinous aroma. Full-bodied, sweet with hints of berries and wine.
3.5 33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 15.2.2009 Aroma is very close to ”kotikalja”: caramel, aged fruits and some yeast. Flavour has some toffee, caramel and hints of fruits. Drinkable and good, but then again very typical and boring belgian strong.
3.3 Bottle. Hazy orange coloured with an off white head. Sweet aroma of malts, caramel, fruits and yeast. Flavour of malts, caramel and spices with notes of fruits and alochol.
Test vom 24.11.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 9,6,7,5,11,6 - 6,55
4.1 Nice deep red copper color, smell is fruity, karamel and yeasty, but small traces of wet paper aswell. Taste is full of soft toasted malts, fresh with hints of apple. Aftertaste lingers on with nice bitters of chicory, and is very dry in the finish.
2.9 The beer in glass is light copper brown, clear, with many CO2 bubbles and fine high foam, which coincides very fast. Starts extremely malty, with a good plum aroma in background. A slight woodiness and a pleasant nutty note comes through. The aftertaste is malty and berry-like, slightly woody-nutty. In the further course the malt body gets even more voluminous. The berry note gets a little stronger. The finish is sugary sweet.
4.0 Excellent strong ale on the dark side of amber. Full in the mouth. Probably nothing to recommend to others.
2.4 fl 33cl, 7,5% Bit dim amber with very thick, creamy, golden foam. Bit caramelly aroma with an acidy tone, bit infected I’d say, also some pear. Lots of taste but nothing special, sweet and sadly a bit infected. Medium palate. some decent bitterness after but also alcohol in taste, the infection destroys it all though.
3.3 Pours a deep amber, almost mahogany. Slight whitish head that does not last long, but laces the glass most eloquently. Big malty sweet aroma. Caramel, raisins, and a little alcohol aroma. Tastes just like it smells. Malt. Caramel. Raisins. Fusels. Not too bad. Thick and coats the mouth with almost everything tasted above. The fusels die down a bit after you get it in your mouth. Feels as soft as velvet in the mouth. Much too sweet and high in ABV to drink too much of. But if it was cold enough I could get through a couple in an evening.
3.2 head: white, creamy/bubbly colour: hazy red/brown smell: vintage, raisins, candy syrup, malts, semi sweet, yeast, bitterness, light chocolaty taste: vintage skunky malty start, carbonation, alcohol, irony, coffee bitterness, yeast, nuy dry end, earthy aftertaste
3.1 Bottle 33cl. A clear amber beer with medium head. Smell is on caramel and agrumes. Aroma is malty and sweet, good body but with and heavy orange aroma. The finish is a bit astringent, less interesting than expected.
3.1 Bottle 33 cl. Pours a dark amber with a medium off-white head and a sweet fruity and malty aroma. The taste is sweet too and very high on malts, with some notes of dark fruits, especially plums and toffee. The sweet taste lasts pretty long and after that a heavy bitterness kicks in. A pretty nice beer.
3.2 06-SEP-2010, bottle on Mallorca:) Clear brown with off-white head. Malty with the usual brown sugar stuff and with grape fruit. Very sweet, long bitter finish - or really the bitterness kicks in after long sweet ending (!). Funny brew. cannot drink a lot of it, but it is OK.
2.1 Blagh un pastone dolciastro, ormai la linea Grimbergen mi lascia davvero perplesso, se questa è una birra speciale io sono Mickey Mouse
3.4 Bottle. Pours dark amber with an ok head. Nice aroma with hints of candy, syrup, and fruits. Taste is ok with the candy and syrup again. Barley wine like only less tasty. Could use a fuller body. Expected more of this one.
3.0 Bottled (BZ, BB 05/2011) Hazy deep red color, good off-white head, lace. Caramel, yeast, alcohol, overriped banaa and wood in the nose. Medium-bodied. Quite alcoholic, yeasty flavor with light sourness. Then of course also some caramel, hay and wood. Different than normal Grimbergen at least.
3.2 Tap @ Café Morshuis Albergen. The tap wasn’t chilled by accident, so I got a warm sample for free. Overwhelming malt character with toffee fudge and hints of fresh cheese. Not bad, but will taste again when at the right temp.
2.9 Amber body, white head. Butter and candy on aroma, some yeast on background. Metallic mouthfeel, some hops in flavour, but not much.
3.3 Bottle from Mitra van Bergen. Red amber body with medium head. Nose of malts and spices. Taste of hops, pine and quite sweet. Nice syrupy texture. Sweet finish.
2.9 330 ml bottle. From Belgium. Courtesy of Brandman. Clear amber colour with tiny off-white head. Belgian yeast, caramel malt and mild butter in aroma. Malty body and mild hops, Belgian yeast and some metal in flavour. Slightly disappointing as a Grimbergen.
3.0 Bottle at home. As my 175th rating, wanted to taste something less or more special. From time to time one of my friends was talking about this beer, he once tasted it, and really enjoyed it. So the moment I’ve found this one at a shop, I had to buy a bottle, to taste what my friend was talking about. Pours out amber-orange coloured. A nice head, but disappears pretty quick, Doesn’t looks bad at all when just poured in. Sour-biscuits smell, fruity also. Very fruity, a bit sour taste, lightly bitter aftertaste. Again those cookies comes up, some pear and raisins. Not bad at all, but I was expecting some more after all those times I had to hear about my friend drinking this beer some years ago.
