Guinness Foreign Extra Stout (Malaysia/Hong Kong/China)

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout (Malaysia/Hong Kong/China)

The basis is an unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract shipped from Dublin, which is added to local pale malt ingredients and brewed locally. The Malaysian version has in recent years seen an ABV downgrade to 6.8%.

The FES currently (2010) found in Hong Kong is the Malaysian version, as is the FES found in Cambodia.

As of 2011, this is the version now found in the People’s Republic of China, which formerly had a 5% version. That version no longer exists, so Chinese FES ratings should go here.

2018 - ABV reduced to 5.5% in Malaysia.

3.2 Malaysia. Bitterer, cremig malziger Beginn. Angenehm hopfig im Hintergrund, was aber definitiv nebensächlich ist. Weich trotz der aufkommenden Trockenheit, vollmundig, moderat herb. Sehr gelungen. 9/9/9/10/8/10
3.0 AROMA-Medium roasted malt aroma with light doughy, molasses and chocolate. Light fruity tartness like prune. Light alcohol feeling. Light floral hop aroma. APPEARANCE-Dark brown. Tan head. FLAVOR-Medium-high frutiy tartness like prune mixed withg medium malty sweet, roasted, molasses, chocolate. Medium bitterness. Finish is roasted malty and bitterness. 3.3 Black colour and brown head that the nice stout. Full body , No sweet , And a little bit bitter are the good taste of stout. Roast malt is the main of aroma. this is a good stout.
2.8 Can, 320ml, 5.5% ABV, brewed by Heineken Malaysia. Black colour with a small head. Aroma of toasted malt. Flavour is burnt malt with some hop notes. Some treacle sweetness. A watery note but alcohol somehow evident despite the low ABV. Not bad but not very special.
2.5 Malaysian anniversary bottle version, thanks for the long haul & Dispatch aus dem Norden Cantabrian! - Shared@oldmanriver’s. - Bref: sweet export mix that resembles in nothing the frothy black stuff from dear dirty Dumplin, - but still tops the alcoholic Belgian Export Version! - Charred malts, brown sugar, burnt toast, deep cheap caramels, bitters going on burnt chicory root. Good body for the abv.
3.4 Bottle shared with JMD at HNB 22.06.16. Ebony. Foamy, dense and persistent brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, burnt wood and dark berries. Similar, and heavy, taste. Medium bitterness.
3.1 Bottle. Very dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate to full, malty and sugary sweetish aroma, light - some caramel and light berry fruitiness and faint roasted malt, light coffee. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, light caramel and faint roasted malt, light coffee, faint hoppyness. Finish is average, malty and sweetish, light berry fruitiness, light caramel and roasted malt with light coffee faint hoppness and alcohol. Way too sweet stout for me - could really use some bitterness.
3.2 330ml bottle served in a tulip glass. Pours a dark bown head forming a creamy beige head with medium retention and some lacings left. Nose is quite sweet and roasted. Strong notes of roasted malts. Hints of chocolate and coffee. Ashes. Taste is slightly sweet in the upfront. In overall, dry and bitter. Roastes malts, grassy hops. Medium to low bitterness. Medium body. Biscuits and ashes in the aftertaste. Medium drinkability. Well....
3.4 330ml bottle from a shop in Siem Reap. Pours black with a thin off white head. Aroma of roast malt and black treacle. Bitter finish.
2.1 Black with big fluffy beige head. Roasted malt aroma, notes of cocoa and syrup. Bittersweet flavour, roasted malt, syrup, sourish and burnt notes. Aftertaste has some kind of cleaning product. Weird.
3.0 (Bottle, 0.33 l - BBE 03/2016, thanks Henri, tiong’s tasting, 20160109) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had chocolate, burnt malts and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were chocolate, a lot of sweetness, burnt malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, burnt and bitter. A sweetened version of foreign stout.
2.9 Black and strong roasted coffee & caramel smell.Taste is coffee bitter and sour. Had draught, bottle and can.. must get the draught or if desperate bottle ones but never the can! Of all of the Malaysia commercially available beer this is the best!
2.2 330ml bottle (tasting @tiong’s, thanks). Very dark brown color. Small size, bubbly brown head, stays. Looks much like coke. Sweet, caramel, berries and pepsi in aroma. Caramel, roast, coffee, berries in taste. Sweet caramel and some roast in aftertaste. Fizzy carbonation. Feels rough in mouth. No thanks.
3.1 330ml bottle - thanks mjs and the posse at tiongs! Worrying sweet childrens fake berry sweeties aroma. Taste is very rich and berry-ey, sweet, malty, and with pleasant bitterness, a bit metallic. Feels old and oxidised. Slightly messy, but once you’re past the sweet hump of the aroma, it’s drinkable.
2.7 330ml bottle Pours pitch black with a small white head. Aroma has hints of roasty malts, berries, blackcurrant, hints of earthiness. Taste is earthy, slightly roasty with hints of berries. Finish is smooth, slightly sweet and roasty with hints of blackcurrant. A bit weird.
2.4 Bottle at tiong’s, Espoo. Thanks to Mjs! BBE 03/2016. Colour is dark brown with very small white head. Aromas and flavours: Sweetness, some coffee, some chocolate and roasted malts. Quite weird.
2.4 Pours black with brown, quickly dissipating head. Roasted, coffee, burnt rubber aroma. Slightly harsh and burnt aftertaste.
2.6 far better than anything I expected to find in Malaysia! actually a bit of flavour, if rather sweet compared to other FES versions. A bit cloying by the end of a 660ml bottle
3.5 Sampled from a 33cl bottle from a Hong Kong supermarket. This is one of the best versions of this ubiquitous beer that I have tried. The ABV of 6.8% gives it some backbone, and all the usual roasted flavours are there. In addition there are undercurrents of sour cherry and black currant, which adds an extra dimension to the taste. Usual roasty, bitter finish. This is a wonderful beer and always consistent and reliable.
2.6 (6) Slightly above average. Maybe it was the warm Malaysian air that had me rate thi beer higher - or the low and poor selection of beer in Malaysia. Maybe having this beer in Chinatown made it so much better.
3.3 Miles away from the Irish version the Asian one is still drinkable. Black with frothy beige head. Roasty aroma, taste of malts, coffee, medium bitter, light bodied but still smooth. Always a reliable stout!

3.9 Can thanks to Jeremy. Pours a black color with a medium white head. A big sweet malty earthy metallic nose. The flavor is big sour metallic roast. Very much a Guinness fes. Sharp with chocolate and toast. Lovely.
3.1 Puszka 0,32, alkohol 6.8 %. Kolor - czarny, pod światło rubinowy, klarowny. Piana - beżowa, drobna, wysoka i trwała. Zapach - lekki kawowo-palony.
3.1 Country 105 / 244 - thank you Culchiem for this bottle! The beer has got a deep black colour with a steady creamy head and medium body. Aroma of roasted malt and torf with some hints of coffee. Taste of grounded coffee, chocolate, torf, woods, malt and dark bread. Easy drinkable, solid beer.
