Guinness Original 4.2% (Ireland/UK)

Bottle & Can: Filtered

Abv may vary from 4.1% to 4.3%, depending on where sold

Previously sold under various names, including "XX Porter" and "Extra Stout Porter" and "Extra Stout"

If you were in a pub sometime between 1821 and 1970, chances are this is the Guinness you would have been drinking. Originally brewed as the XX version of our Porter, it’s hoppy, roasty, and crisp, with a bittersweet finish.

4.7 This is considered the original, the one that started it all the way back over 200 years, in 1821. The one that was popular and mostly drank as late as the 1970s, the one your grandfather or great grand-father would have drank! The can has a retro look about it, with the iconic harp logo and explaining that this beer will be “Dark and Lively”. Strength varies in where you are drinking it. In the UK and Ireland it is 4.2% but in Europe it is over 5%, jammy bastards. Bottle conditioned and carbonate with C02, so no ball or nitro here…… Did a silly pour for the first pint, no care just straight in, which resulted in a massive head, which eventually settled down. All creamy and dark in the colour. Second pour more considered and with care, but still made no difference, still got a massive amount of carbonation with a huge head that takes a while to settle. Much more lively than a regular Guinness. Big frothy tanned head, black is the colour. When settled its not bad on the eye. Good lacing remains on glass. On the nose I get the typical Guinness aroma, stouty and peaty, chocolate and caramel. Actually I would go as far to say it is even more “peaty” than the regular Guinness. Does smell authentic, roasted barley, grainy, malty and smoked peat. Nice smell, with a lot of character….. Onto the taste, well first off it has the expected Guinness feel in the mouth, very typical of the famous stout. Get the roasted barley and malts, the coffee and chocolate flavours, But there is more to it than that, there definitely is a nod to the old style with this brew, feels more porter in the taste, and the flavours are more to the fore, thanks to a higher ratio of hops than the regular Guinness. Great to drink, has a real character to it, and I love the coffee flavours swirling around in the mouth, brilliant stuff. When I bought a few of these cans, my sister immediately laughed saying I bought into the gimmick. It’s not like Guinness to bring out a million different versions of essentially the same thing, their famous draught stout. She thought it was a slightly more “expensive version” of the same thing. To be fair I was half expecting that too! But no, I can state there is a CLEAR difference with this to the draught. It is softer on the palate, very well balanced, has more flavouring, is tastier, and one doesn’t get that bloated feeling you get when you drink a lot of the regular Guinness. Liked it a lot, very satisfying and easy to drink and I WILL return again for future inspection. Recommended. I have started to think maybe the regular Guinness isn’t in fact the master, the number one, perhaps the original, the Extra Stout, should be my go to Stout in the future…….oh dear, what a dilemma. The draught is creamier, tastier, much smoother and fun to drink, while the Extra Stout just has that better flavour and more to pack and think about, and perhaps is the better beer of the two……..oh I don’t know!!!
3.0 Old rating from 2016 - 500ml bottle, pours black with a beige head. Aromas & tastes of dark fruits, coffee & roasted malt. Medium body. Smooth finish
3.0 It’s cool to know that back in the day this would have been the Guinness served to you in an old pub, but Beer wasn’t as good back then, and by today’s standards it is just an average Stout. The bitter abrasive quality is great if that suits your palate, and there is some light relief from the sweet malts and notes of dark fruit, but the metallic undertone is definitely undesirable. What you’re paying for here is the brand name as there are many many bitter Stouts which are far superior. Read the full review here: https://beerwithus2.wordpress.com/2021/02/27/guinness-original/
3.3 Pite jakiś czas temu. Ocena w celu uzupełnienia profilu. https://www.instagram.com/czgr_
3.3 Rocky beige head left a creamy cover on a black still body. Bitter malt aroma. Medium bodied, sharp with a clean back. Malt, coal, nutty, burnt & bitter tastes. Decent
3.3 Aroma : Light to medium roasted chocolate & caramel malts, a tiny bit of burnt smokey peat. Taste : Thinnish body for a stout & actually more like a porter in texture. Big roasty bitter bite at first that disappears very quickly into a light but lingering dry roasty chocolate malty bitterness. A classis decent no frills Dry Irish Stout.
3.8 For my Bday
1.9 Стаут от Гиннесса. Темное пиво, со светло коричневой пеной. Пена падает быстро. В запахе лакрица, немного фруктов и солод. На вкус стаут водянистый, в меру горький. Слабый разбавленный стаут.
3.0 As Guinness Extra Stout 4.1%. Bottle. Black, beige head. Coffee and strong roasted malts. Some Pilsener malts as well. Dry, mild tartness. Lively carbonation. Thin body. A decent 'light' Stout.
3.7 50cl bottle, in a Pint Glass; from the fridge. The classic in a bottle. Strong with light aftertaste, creamy beige head, fuzzyness. Chocolate and coffee taste.
2.4 11.2 oz bottle courtesy of Headbanger. Color is black with good carbonation and a thick tan head. Aroma is roasted with a hint of smoke. It has a medium body with a crisp yet smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is very mild with a hint of roasted malt. Aftertaste gives a faint bitterness that drops out quickly leaving the malt and a faint sweetness. Overall it's an OK brew, a little weak for a stout in my opinion.
3.3 Bottle - dark with large beige head. Malty aroma - quite pleasant. Good mouthfeel but a bit thin. Good malty tasting -ok aftertaste.
3.4 500ml bottle. Pours black with large beige head that leaving considerable retention and lacing; promising. Aroma of toasted malts and dark fruits; not complex but inviting. It has a low to moderate body which does feel a bit watery for a stout. The carbonation is very lively at first before settling down. I think a strong carbonation works well on a thin lager as it distracts, in part, from the lack of flavour. However, there is flavour here so you don't need that overt distraction. This is where the draught version is much better with its smoothness which enhances the flavour in my view. Taste is sweet toffee, roasted notes, malts, and a lovely dark fruity note which combines with a bitterness in the finish; quite tasty. Overall very nice except for the mouthfeel.
3.0 Decent enough stout, tasted as expected
4.6 Different taste from tipical beers, caramel aroma, but very tasty
2.9 Very hoppy. Bitter and somewhat watery in texture. Nice lingering stouty flavour. Bit of a metallic aftertaste.
3.2 500ml (4.2%) at home on 26 Apr 2020, purchased on 22 Apr 2020 from Tesco, Whitletts Road, Ayr (bb 4 Jan 2021): roast malt, coffee aroma, very dark mahogany, ruby tint, thin bubbly beige head, pretty pattern of spotty lacing, roast malt, liquorice, coffee flavour, creamy, dry malty finish.
3.6 500ml bottle from Tesco. Pours dark ruby with a beige head. Aroma of roast malt and chocolate. Similar taste. Dry bitter finish.
3.6 Wygląd: Barwa czarna, nieprzejrzysta. Piana brązowa, średniej wysokości, średniopęcherzykowa, szybko redukuje się do pierścienia pozostawiając lekki lacing. Aromat: Średnio lotny, gładki i nienachalny. Finisz wytrawny, kawy i gorzkiej czekolady.
3.7 330ml bottle from the 200th anniversary pack. Even without the nitro widget, it has an impressive tall, tan head. Thick and rocky as it slowly recedes, leaving chunky lacking. Deep dark color, of course. Aroma is mild: fruit and roasted malts. Mouth feel is thin, again as expected. It is a classic dry Irish stout of sessionable strength, so no one should expect different. Classic Guinness taste: roasted malts are the star, along with dark fruits, hints of smoke. The middle and finish are slightly bitter. The aftertaste is roasted malts with a little bitterness. Dry. A very good classic beer that, outside of the anniversary pack, is not normally imported to the USA. I'm looking forward to the other three beers in this pack. Nice start to St. Patrick's Day.
4.1 Bottle (11.2 oz). Pours black with tan head that dissipates quickly. Roasted malt aroma. Roasted malt with pleasant bitterness. Long, roasty finish with some dryness although not as much as Guinness draught.
3.8 300 ml bottle marked L9281GF004. Deep dark brown to black pour with lasting tan head. Coffee and roasted dark malts greet my nose. Maybe a char sensation too. Light body but smooth. Taste: Sweet and roasted notes with a floral drop at the end.
5.0 Well poured and kept. Nice to see it served traditionally, by tap, left to settle and a shamrock everytime.
2.7 Bottle, 500ml. Dark black colour with a small tan head. Aroma of malt and fresh barley, some hop notes. Flavour has roasted barley, some hop undertones, cardboard, not much else going on. High carbonation. Super-bland for a stout and over-carbonated.
3.2 Black appearance. Aroma is coffee, nutty and malt. Flavour is coffee, rich and roasted.
2.7 Taster from 50 cl bottle (BBD 2020-09-03) at 4.2% ABV, bought at Sainsbury's and drunk at home 2019-12-24. Appearance is an opaque deep brown with a thin but dense crema coloured head that dissipates relatively quickly. Unsurprisingly no visible carbonation, even on the surface. Looks like a stout but I prefer a longer lasting head. Aroma is pretty typical too - plenty of burnt and toasty notes, not much besides. Maybe the barest hint of dried fruits. Fine but nothing special. Taste is decidedly average. Some coffee and dark chocolate notes with an earthy bitterness towards the finish, but disappointingly thin. Palate is disappointing. Light-bodied with a small amount of in-mouth carbonation, a seriously short finish and a clean feel rather than full and rich. Not what I want from a dry stout. Overall, this is exceedingly meh. It's not unpleasant, but there are many stouts that do everything it does better and more. Really needs some more body and richness on the palate plus some more depth to the flavour.
4.8 The Guinness Original was from the 200th Anniversary variety 12-pack bottles. Label looks different than currently shown. All aspects of this beer are outstanding and enjoyed every drop. I hope Guinness starts selling these more often.
3.5 Warszawa ul. Wrzeciono 0.5 l z Londynu od Edwarda O.
3.5 Pour from 11.2 oz. Bottle. Aroma of roasted grain. Taste is classic Guinness. A little lighter than the extra and foreign versions but excellent.
3.0 Superbe bière, mais en bouteille elle est moins savoureuse,
