Gulder Lager (Nigeria)

Gulder Lager (Nigeria)

Bottle.

Brewed under licence since 1970.

Ingredients: Water, Malt, Hops.

**Nigerian beers by law are made with a portion of sorghum. A grant has been made to aid in the growing of sorghum which the brewer will buy as it lowers the proportion of malt in its product. This is the difference in formulation between Gulder Lager (Nigeria) and Gulder Lager (Ghana).**

2.4 600ml bottle (?, Tallinn) (5:3:5:2:9=2.4) Straw colour, slight mist, large rocky persistent head. Sweet and grainy aroma, quite lagery, not bad. Watery palate, decent carbonation. Grainy lagery taste, herbal hops, some acidity, a little chalkiness. Little bit of a tingle of bitterness. Not a bad lager, but not good either. Good for a sorgum beer, certainly, I normally dislike those.
1.6 600ml bottle. Pours clear golden colour, small white head. Aroma is grainy, sweet, malty, husky. Taste is grainy, herbal, grassy, plastic. Shitty bitter acetony aftertaste. Light watery body, average carbonation. Poor
1.7 Sample from a bottle. A golden coloured beer with a white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, straw, grain and sweetness.
2.7 600 ml bottle bought at Ghana Locals restaurant in Chung King Mansion, Tsim Sha Tsui. Clear straw golden yellow colour; Two and a half finger head with soapy white foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Good sticky lacing with fizzy carbonation; Aroma of lager malt, with light paper, strong floral, sugar, soggy bread, lemon and grass; Medium sweet taste of Lager malt, with strong floral, fair sugar, wood, herbs, soggy bread, lemon, medium bitter hops and grass; Close to medium body. Slick palate; Mouth feel is moderate Lager maltyness in a slick background. Much more thicker and gooey than the Nigerian Star Lager, with just about eveyrthing got level up including floral, sweetness and herbal woodyness, but not in a good way. Wet bready with strong lemon to round. Sluggish and quite annoying!... Hoppiness is strong floral, lemon and grass in nose. Wood, strong floral, herbs, lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness is quite strong for a lasting, mid to high level bitter-sweet fair malty finish; Fairly dry after taste. STrong floral herbal and bitter to mouth. Comments: This is the stronger version of Star Lager, but not as good as it sounds: the floral herbal hops (extract?) is so strong they are close to be annoying, while the light malt is reinforced with sorghum's gooeyness. Bolder than most watery Macro Pales but neither pleasing nor attractive. Forgettable!
1.9 Bottle. Pours clear yellow. Aroma is grains, vegetables, banana. Body is light and thin and watery and carbonation. That's it. Barely any body, barely any bitterness. Meh.
2.2 660ml bottle. Pours clear gold, medium white crown. Grainy sweet malt nose. Taste is grainy, sweet malt, adjunct, corn, cardboard. There are worse African lagers but this is far from the best.
2.1 2013 tauchte mein Kumpel Lois auf einer Studentenparty mit diesem Bier auf. Da wurde es in illustrer Runde gleich verkostet. Aber was soll man dazu sagen? Ein einfaches Lager für den afrikanischen Markt...da sind die Erwartungen nicht besonders hoch. Es mag schlimmeres geben, aber ein allzu großer Wurf ist es nicht.
1.7 Bottle from Iman supermarket in elephant and castle. Head gone very quickly, watery lager with awkward metallic notes. Not good.
2.6 Malty sweet aroma. Hazy golden color with small sized white head. Medium to heavy sweet taste, malty but mostly neutral. Thin body, soft carbonation. Goes well with African spicy food. //bottle at African cuisine, Zagreb
1.5 Bottled, 330ml from Tesco on-line, part of the world wide lager hunt. Gold with fizzed white head. There is a fusty, musty, boiled vegetable character to this, spoiled malt and sweetcorn notes. Pretty bad.
2.4 Trinkbares Bier in einer unhandlich 0,6l Flasche. Aroma nicht vorhanden. Geschmack akzeptabel. Wenn die Riesenflasche nicht wäre...
1.7 Bottle shared at THT January (Platypus Edition), at Kwartje Platypus Information and carecenter. Clear golden with white head. Dank and moldy malts. Cardboard. Yuck.
1.9 Bottle shared at THT January (Platypus Edition). Clear golden with small white head. Cardboard, sweet malts, light herbs, soft apple, paper. Medium sweet and under medium bitter. Just medium bodied. Nah.

1.6 0,66l Flasche. Gelbes klares Bier, heller Schaum. Getreidiger Korkgeruch. Malz Antrunk. Starker Kork, fast schon Holzfass. Ziemlich seltsam.
2.0 60cl Bottle @ El Mandela Restaurant, Madrid, Spain. Golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma is grain, malt. Taste is grain, malt, sweet. Light body, average carbonation.
2.7 Bottle from Home Bargains, Exmouth. Quaffable. Fresh lemon citrus and enjoyable.
2.2 Butelka 600ml. Zlota barwa.Piana biala mala, szybko zanika. Aromat kukurydziano-slodowy z lekkim kartonem w tle. W smaku slodkawy z posmakiem beczki. Malo tutaj wysublimowanych smakow...ot lager z innego kontynentu
2.4 Tastes ok oddish aroma of string alcohol gold with strong head that soon disappears bottle from home bargains.
2.8 from an indian shop in Biel - clear golden beer with a gentle head retention; spicy and light papery nose; low carbonation, moderate malt body; light bitter; flowery and spicy, more papery finish
2.6 Hay and corn in mouth. Got a bit cloying. Sweetness in with the corn at first. Wouldn’t take again tbh.
2.8 Live rating of a 660ml bottle from Home Bargains, chilled in the fridge and served in a sloping San Miguel glass: Aroma is funky and metallic, Body bright gold, with a white head. Flavour is malty with that metallic note again. Some body and light sourness in the flavour, Full bodied for a pale lager. not great, not horrible, it is what it is at £1.49 for a pint and a quarter, and I get to tick Nigeria off my country list.
1.2 Bottle from Home Bargains. Pretty much a standard pale lager, as with any others of the style. Grainy and slightly funky aroma with a touch of grass. Taste is blandly sweet and slightly bitter, heavy carbonation but no lingering unpleasant aftertaste which is good. Alright.
2.5 0.6l bottle. Golden color with quickly disappearing white head. Aroma is grainy and malty with light grassy and herbal notes. Taste is malty with light bitterness. Overall it’s easy drinkable beer, but nothing much more than that.
2.1 600ml embossed bottle. This is not great, very muddled and damp, dusty, funky, shitty beer.
2.4 Botella 0,6l Color dorado, claro, espuma alta irregular, media resistencia.Aroma- malta, cereales.Sabor- malta, un toque de dulzor y fino amargor en postgusto.
2.6 600ml bottle from Tesco - Hazy yellow body, medium sized white head. Nose is metallic, sweet, slightly lemony, and stewed vegetables. Taste is wet cardboard artificial sweetener, rice and lemon. International fizz.
2.3 From old tasting notes. Medium gold color. Bubbly white head. Strange medicinal aroma. Bittersweet hop flavor dominates the palate. Interesting dry bitter character in finish. Long bitter aftertaste.
