HaandBryggeriet Røyk Uten Ild (Smoke Without Fire)

HaandBryggeriet Røyk Uten Ild (Smoke Without Fire)

Røyk Uten Ild (Smoke Without Fire) is our smoky beer,
here we have tried to make a beer as smoky as we can
using our smoked malt from Weiermann. We have made
a fairly dark and flavourful beer. Apart from the special
malt the rest of the malt bill (86%) is smoked malt.
You could also say that this is a smoked wheat beer,
because we have used our wheat beer yeast here. The
beer is not scary but actually very nice even for those
that aren’t smoke beer fanatics....try it and you will see.
Contains malted barley, Amarillo hops, wheat beer yeast, and lots of smoked malt from Bamberg, Germany.
8% alc, 33 ibu, 48 ebc.
Serving temp 8 - 12C or 46 - 53F.

3.2 50 cl bottle. Clear dark amber hued brown, rocky tan creamy head slowly settles and lasts. Smokey roasted caramel aroma. Smokey singed malt taste, ashy and woody, some hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Soft carbonation, medium bodied, lightly hopped. Could use more sweetness to balance it out. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)
3.6 Aroma: Slight caramel and smokey notes Taste: Rich maltiness with chocolate hints, nice smokiness about it Appearance:light brown body
3.7 Nice sweet smoked beer. Light brown color. Sweet caramel and chocolate in the nose and a light campfire smokiness. The taste follows, very subtle and a little ashy. A hint of hop bitterness. Pretty easy to drink for a smoked beer.
3.7 Botella. Muy agradable el ahumado sin ser molesto y cansino bien integrado con notas de café y chocolate, con un acabado seco y ligeramente ahumado
3.5 Medium brown pour. Smoked meat nose. Full bodied with smokey malt, ash, smoked bacon, pear. Not the most intense smoked beer. It’s growing on me.
4.0 Bottle from Liberty Wine Merchants on The Drive in Vancouver. I’ll save readers the tedium of my descriptions. Others have described it better than I. I love this as a winter beer! It has the characteristics of a good imperial porter or stout. My sole complaint is that I really don’t detect much smoke. I’ve had smoked porters that were obviously smoky, but not this baby. If I wasn’t looking for it I think I’d miss it, which means I may be imagining it. Heaven forbid! Still a great dark winter beer!
3.7 500mL bottle, 16/9/10. Pours clear mahogany with brick red highlights anfd a dense, persistent off-white head. The smoke in this bottle takes a back seat to a rich dark fruit cake, caramel, a little chocolate, some fruity esters and alcohol. Quite sweet, a bit of acid and mild bitterness. Medium-full bodied, a bit syrupy, soft carbonation leading to a reasonably short drying and slightly bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle. Very dark brown with an off-white head, moderate creamy, medium lasting, moderate lacing. Aroma is light smoky with hints of caramel, slightly coffee and roasted malts. Flavor has notes of roasted malts, moderate smokyness, leather and meat, slightly sweet notes. The final is roasty with notes of light bitterness and smoke.
3.9 Bottle. Pours brown, tan head. Aroma of campfire, toffee, berry, roast. Flavour is campfire, licorice, berry, roast. Simple but rockin’. Drank it with a friend just getting into craft, warned her away from it because of the smoke but she ended up calling it the best beer she’d ever had so there ya go.
3.2 Pours a murky tobacco brown color with a large tan head with good retention. White pepper, cola, and medium-roast malt on the nose. Mouthfeel is smooth with fine scrubbiness on the rear of the palate. Medium-roast malt and some ripe, dark fruit flavors. Finishes with a Hickory, Liquid Smoke flavor.
4.6 Big, smooth, rich and smokey. Really liked this it was brilliant. Would need to buy another to go over again but I just remember the smooth rich and great smokey aspects that made up this beer. Great with the rib eye steak cooked on the BBQ.
3.5 Nydelig mørk farge med stort tett skum. Smaken er noe søt med fyldig maltpreg og en del mindre røyksmak enn jeg hadde forventet. En god øl som varer.
3.6 DØE 2013: Brown coloured and hazy. Has an off-white head, lasting. Malty aroma, lightly smoked. More smoke in the flavor, sweetness, harmonic, bitter finish. Faint bitter.
4.4 Wow! The aroma of this beer cannot be adequately described. It smells from the first moment we opened the bottle like someone had unpacked a delicious smoked sausage; instantly mouth-watering and unique, layered atop the scent of good beer. Aroma: Delicious smoked sausage, and good beer. The use of the wheat ale yeast means that it carries a much lighter aroma for the beer than one would expect; but it’s absolutely and by far the most delicious smelling beer I’ve ever had the pleasure of engaging. Appearance: Pours a dark cola with very thin tan head. Taste: Very, very reminiscent of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, with a gentle astringency and powerful earthy malt tones that fade into strong chocolate/coffee notes at the back. Sweet and delicious. The taste develops across multiple sips, opening up wonderfully. Palate: Pleasantly astringent with light carbonation, a little residual fizz and moderate astringency on the tongue and palate. Overall: This is the best smelling beer I’ve ever enjoyed. By far. I want to sit and huff this beer for hours. Taste-wise, it’s an excellent stout-like taste with a little more hops than I’d like, but it is delicious nonetheless. If you’re looking for a real pleaser and enjoy aromatic stouts/imperial stouts, this one is absolutely for you. Hats off to Haandbryggeriet!
3.6 DØE:light smoked aroma,red/brown, golden, off white foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, soft nice smoked finish.
3.7 Bottle, shared with Parksy. Deep red-brown body with a finely bubbled head that shows mediocre retention. Aroma is sweet caramel, meaty smoke, undercurrents of dark fruits. The meaty smokiness plays nicely off the sweet malts here, with enough balance to allow underlying flavours of raisins and chocolate to shine through. Dry, peanut-skin bitterness. Marred slightly by an overabundance of carbonation.
4.1 500 ml bottle courtesy of jesterdeal. Thanks. Pours a nearly opaque dark brown color with a big foamy khaki colored head that has great retention. The aroma is somewhat mild for a smoked beer with smoke, roasted grains and some ripe dark fruits. The taste is wonderfully complex with Bamberg smoked malts, wheat, dark chocolates, leather and bitter walnuts. The palate is full and viscous with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry with a bit of lingering smoke. Overall: Very tasty--Great smoked beer.
3.5 Røyk Uten Ild pours a murky opaque dark brown with a fluffy and slightly creamy beige head that fizzes up and dies to a thin spotty head. A few light splotchy beige lacing marks can be found on the glass with a few swirls. The nose has a mild floral and citrus based hop that is soon overblown by a prominent but not overpowering smoked malt note. Hints of chocolate and a mild lightly roasted coffee also become apparent. In general the smoked malts are rather mild and not entirely overblown in the aroma. The first sip I took has a bit of sweetness and a mild chocolately roasted malt. The hops are entirely missed in the flavour with an encroaching smokey ashtray that covers the entire mid palate. The flavour profile is not overblown with smoke and ash but not much is detectable amidst the smoke. The finish has a rather heavy bitterness and a lingering smoke and drying astringency. The finish is heavy with lingering smoke and a warmth attributable to the 8% ABV. Overall, a rather good modern twist on traditional Rauchbier.
4.1 From bottle. Amazing smoky aroma, not overpowering and not subtle, just right. For flavor I’m picking up dark cherry, hickory, a bit of chocolate. All work well together. Would love to air this with BBQ brisket.
3.8 Pours deep amber with a foamy tan head. Aroma has nice smoke...slight metallic and band aid notes. Flavor is nice and campfire smoky...a bit bacony in a great way. Mouthfeel is light and the finish is light and smoky/bacony...dries out and lingers.
3.3 In short: A heavy meaty-leathery sweet smoked dark lager How: Bottle 500ml, consumed a few months after receiving it through private importation. The look: Dark brown body topped by a medium beige heard with medium retention. In long: Nose is medium-high smoky, a bit meaty, a certain leathery and earthiness. Taste is meaty earthy malts, wet leather, a strong rye sensation (although I’m almost certain this is not a rye-based beer), cooked caramel, a certain spiciness, toasted wheat, tobacco. A ton of carbonation which would be too much for most beers but here I think this the excessive carbonation helps the beer not tasting like a burnt steak wrapped in leather. I also thought the beer felt like a lager but looks like it is an ale, so I have no clue what I’m talking about and I should just shut up. Far from a highly drinkable beer, this beer feels very heavy although once again the excessive carbonation helps drinkability. Not a very good beer, however I’m giving it bonus points because there was something original about this beer that is hard to describe with words. This is my 100th Smoke rating, another milestone, and with over 5000 ratings I’m starting to be afraid that girls may be interested in me just because I’m a top-rater on ratebeer, but I was told I should not worry about this to happen, really not, absolutely not.
3.7 Draft at Farmers Cabinet and later Khyber Pass. Very dark brown pour with a lasting tan foamy ring. Plenty of earthy wood smokiness. Tobacco. Bacon. Truffles (of both the fungal and chocolate varieties.) Black pepper. A hint of tartness. Most of the expected wheat notes have burned away. Nice.
3.5 Bottle 50cl. Dark brown with a large foamy lightbrown head. A dark fruity aroma with some roasted and chocolate sence. The taste are more roasted, even light smoked taste, med. Bitter. Not Bamberg beer, but ok
3.4 This bottle was two years old. There was a moderate smokiness to the aroma but it wasn’t too strong. The flavour has the smokey bacon type flavour with warming alcohol and a rich maltiness. I think due to the age of the beer some of the smoke had decreased and the flavour was starting to appear a little dull and stale.
3.6 Dark brown med head that settles thin and lasts. Smells..lots of smoke, roasted malts and caramels, wheat and some choc when swirled. Tastes ..heaps smokey malts hints of dark fruit, choc and coffee, some alcohol too. Rated with flu and cigarette.
3.7 Clear reddish brown colour, beige head. Aroma of smoke, malts, sweet caramel, dried fruits, raisins and berries. Sweet malty flavour, bitter malts, smoke and ash. Smoky finish, caramel, coffee, red fruits and berries. Nice! )From 0.5L bottle @ home)
3.8 500 ml bottle. Pours a red/brown with medium head of big bubbles that dissipate quickly. Aromas of oily smoke and dark berries. Flavors of smoked ham, heavily roasted malts, and berry jam. Interesting.
3.9 500ml bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours black with a big tan head. Aroma of smoke, fat, coffee and roasted malt. Good carbonation. Great with barbecue food.
3.8 50 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20100921. Pours brown color with a small head. Aroma of burnt malts, smoke, some coffee hints and caramel. Flavor of burnt malts, caramel, faint wheat notes and toffee. A bit weird but good.
