HaandBryggeriet Wild Thing

HaandBryggeriet Wild Thing

Norwegian ale with cranberries and currants added.

The Haand brewers - four guys making beer in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale - specialize in recreating old Norwegian farm beers. Here’s one made with a variety of different grains, and some typical fruits from the region, handpicked by the brewers. It is fermented by airborne wild yeast, unfiltered, and unpasteurized. Wild Thing, you make everything...groovy.

3.1 (bottle) hazy orange colour with no head. aroma of apricots, orange juice and some vanilla, with a touch of alcohol, tomatoes, sweet spices, floral hops and blackcurrants. flavour is mostly alcohol, tart apricots and oak, with a hint of cherry stones and a semi-dry finish. full-bodied with lively carbonation.
3.3 Bottle split at Pedro leaving drinks, CBC Clerko, 24/04/15 thanks to Paulo. Lightly hazed orange amber with moderate off White spotting. Nose is tarte fruit rinds, damp hay, wood must, red berry notes, apple core. Taste falls away from the nose a little, grain, light wood must, sweaty bread, tarte berry, damp straw, citric notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light acidity and a cranberry tang in the close. Ok sour if a touch basic.
3.5 Bottle shared at Pedro. It pours clear deep orange with minimal head. The nose is earthy, funky, musty, berry skin, light spice and wood. The taste is earthy, funky, tart berry skin, lactic, hay, redcurrant, wood, leather, must, damp leaves and a touch of astringency with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Interesting and good depth to it.
3.4 Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell during the Peter’s leaving do. Big thanks to Paul. Pours clear gold with a creamy white head. The nose holds some ripening orange, grass, light vinegar. Light sweet flavor, a little drying, with some ripe berries, citrus, mellow apricot, pale bread, tart lemon. Light bodied with average, spritzy carbonation. Lightly warming finish with faint acetic bite, se rindy citrus, further lemon, some earth, dry pale bread. A nicely drinkable sour.
3.4 18 Mar 2015, bottle. pinkish brown, hazy, and lots of sediment. nose is sweet, fruity (currants), faintly sour, a bit funky. thin body and mildly fizzy. not very sour. dry fruit pits, some currants, a tad funky. only okay.
4.2 Bottle, bb 4.09.2017. Beautiful orange beer with short-lasting white head. Sweet aromas of berries, very much resembling cloudberries. Low acidity, some sweetness and contrasting bitterness make this beer drinkable and enjoyable. Distinct and very pleasant aftertaste of berries.
3.2 Orangebrun klar med lavt hvitt skum. Lukter grønne epler og sure røde bær. Syrlig sur smak med sitrussødme i bakgrunnen. Fyldig. Tørr. Lang sur ettersmak. Lillestrøm ølfestival - Klimt
3.7 Sample at ACBF 2015 with S&G tasting group. APPEARANCE: clear blond beer, almost no head. NOSE: very sweet, fruity, port, peaches. TASTE: very sweet, fruity, port, peaches, nice and balanced, little sour. Pleasant! Very surprised by this brewery on this festival!
4.5 Smells of fragrant berry blossoms. A beautiful peach and red pearlescence color, but no head. Sharp slight aseptic then the currents come out and the dry cranberries finish it. Leaves a lasting dry berry stain behind.
3.6 On bottle at Haandbryggeriets opening party for their new facilities. Golden color , slightly pink tingle to it. Medium aroma intensity, fruity, berries, raspberries . Good sourness- well balanced. Enjoyable, but significantly less wild compared to its competitors when first released.
3.4 500ml bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando, Florida. Orange-amber in colour with a long lasting off-white head, excellent lacing. Aroma is of cigarette ash, musty, berry skins and leather. Flavour is musty with a bit of yeast, stale donuts, lots of berries, very dry, some straw. Musty mouthfeel, medium/light body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, berries and quite dry. One of the weirder beers that I have ever had, so weird that I can’t help but like it...sort of.
3.4 Sample from bottle @ What’s Brewing, Stavanger. Pours clear amber with a small creamy head. Aroma is sweet fruity yeast with tart notes of berries, as well as lactic acid. Creamy body with very soft carbonation. Flavour is tart fruity yeast, with sour berries and lingonberry sweetness, as well as balsamic vinegar.
3.0 Bottle at What’s Brewing 2014, Stavanger. Pours hazy orange. Aroma of fruit, lemon, alcohol. Thin bodied, but some fruit and bitterness.
3.7 Clear deep golden color with a smal white head. Sour fruity, acidic, berries and yeast. Inviting and complex aroma. Medium body. Nice balance between sourness/acidity and sweetness. Nice complexity and still mellow. Pleasant and easy to drink. Well for us who likes this stuff. Dry ending. Lots of berries, deep malt base and yeast. Nice one. [Bottle at Verkstedet in Oslo, Norway. At a tasting with Buxton/Haandbryggeriet. Batch #730]
3.4 From a 50cl at Buxton/Haandbryggeriet tasting at Verkstedet, Oslo. Pours almost clear amber, it seems, with a rather small head. Fairly fruity aroma of red berries, hints of spices and hints of wild yeast. Moderate sweet and quite fruity with pleasantly sour notes. Medium body with fairly average carbonation. Easy to drink and enjoyable.
3.3 a touch funky, a touch earthy, with some cranberry shining through, but not like the Tyaettbaer(?) from Nogne O. This was decent, but not that one’s rival by any stretch.
3.7 Bottle at WTWBA. Smoke and bacon in this beer. Very interesting. Yeasty and slightly fruity. Cool beer.
3.0 Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Cloudy orange with a decent sized off-white head. Aroma is of ash, sawdust and grass. Taste is of ash and yeast with light citrusy tartness in the finish.
2.9 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The look is golden in color, no head, and clear. The smell is fruit skins, grapes, very veggie like. The taste is a weird tartness, cherry, ashy, and off.
2.9 500ml bottle, batch 246, at the opening a little gush came through, cloudy orange-amber hue, with a bubbly beige head, mild wild yeasty, earthy barnyard, funky, horseblanket, leathery nose, with a musty redberry, herbal medecinal note, with a light wheaty, pale, toasty malt, wild cranberry accent in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with an earthy wild yeasty harsh mould-riped cranberry, sour, tart redberry, faint peat smoked, toasted, wheat malt character, with some wet woody barrel, medicinal herbal plant, fruity tannin flavor, leading towards an earthy harsh woody, cranberry, currant fruity acidic, redberry tannin finsh.
3.9 brygget i 2009, og dermed lagret i omlag 2 år. Innholder flere typer malt, og ikke minst noen regionale bær og frukter. Fin kobberrød farge i glasset. Lukter ikke veldig surt, og sursmaken er heller ikke så slående som hos mange andre surøl på det Norske markedet. Ettersmaken er sterkt preget av en rundt røyksmak, og det liker vi godt. Lagring hjalp veldig på denne.
2.3 A moderate gusher upon opening. Veiled orangey dark pink hued ale covered by a slice of white that lasts. Lightly lactic, gently flowery, mineral, very phenolic nose barely hints at the fruits this contains. Rather earthy pits, branches and... bile meet in this rather messy ale. In mouth, carbonation takes a lot of room and the beer is very dry, the fruit sugars having apparently been eaten up through and through, letting a texture that feels on the very light side for a Haandbryggeriet. They still manage to pull out very noticeable smoke flavours out of this and it is fairly complementary to the minerally fruits, but there is little else going on and some of the phenolic compounds, giving plastic and medicinal flavours a plenty, are detrimental to the enjoyment. Funny how I really love that brewery and wild beers, yet combining the two leads to a disappointment.
1.9 500mL bottle, bottled 11/24/09. Poured clear, honeyed golden with a dense beige head.. nice color to it. The aroma picked up a really unpleasant blend of musty cherries, mold, and detergent.. some currants showed up toward the back and worked well.. I still didn’t like it. The flavor opened with foot-like funk and sour cranberries, backed by odd grains that didn’t work and more not-so-tasty funkage.. peppery warmth amplified gross funk and berry tartness on the long, stomach-souring finish. Medium-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. not ridiculously tart, but it was taxing to drink.. this was a big fail in my book.
3.1 Bottle: Poured a dirty reddish color ale with a large dirty foamy head with good retention and not much lacing – this one was real gusher when I open the bottle losing close to a third of the bottle in the sink. Aroma consists of fruity notes with some weird smoke and funky ester which makes for one of the most unique aroma. Taste is also a mix between some fruity and somewhat sweet cranberries and currant with some dominant smoked undertones and funky barnyard notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite a unique experience and not sure the smoked malt and fruit with the funky yeast is the best match ever or something I would wish to have on a regular basis but glad I tasted this beer.
3.8 Bottle in November of ’09, it got a bit phenolic. Pours amber with a crimson hue. Aroma brings wild yeast and a tad bit of nuttiness. The flavor of the wild yeast dominates as well not leaving much cranberry or currants after three years in the bottle. Not very tart or sour, more like the band-aid wild yeast flavor that has evolved in the bottle.
3.8 Bottle. I think this could br moved to traditional. Very Smokey nose. Slightly sour flavor with lots of earthy smoke flavors. Very even palate. Really interesting.
