Hair of the Dog Adam

Hair of the Dog Adam

Adam is a recreation of a historic beer-style, originally made in Dortmund, Germany and was the first Beer ever released from this Brewery. He is made with Northwest hops, organic pilsner malt, and a variety of specialty grains. The beer is rich and smokey, with notes of chocolate and dark fruit. Best served as a dessert beer. It is great with cigars, or just a warm fire and good company.

Brewer and friend.
(from Batch 101 label)

We start off with aromas of cocoa powder and walnuts, followed by flavors of bittersweet chocolate and worn leather. This bottling has medium high carbonation and shows great promise for additional aging.

4.0 Bottle from Perry’s Liquor & Craft Beer in Livermore, CA. Aroma is roasted malts, toffee, raisins, prunes. Taste is chalky prunes, chestnuts?, tangy toffee with dark chocolate. Overall very complex and probably ahead of its time (when it first came out)...BUT a little less than exciting considering the hype.
3.8 On tap at Fakin Craft Bar, Zagreb. Dark brown with an amber tint, small tan head. Aroma is raw dough, malts mixed with herbs, spice. Alcohol present but light. Light smoke. Herb liqueur. In the end you catch a glimpse of caramel and toast. Flavour is herbal candy, toast and slightly roasty malts, wouldn't say smoky. Caramel in the finish, but combined with dry herbal touch. Medium to full body. Balanced. Soft carbonation.
3.7 Taster shared with Brian. Appearance: opaque dark brown with a white head. Aroma: dark malts, fruitiness. Taste: similar, like Schwarzbeer from Cloudburst we've had earlier this day. Overall: ok. Earlier Rating: 6/16/2019 Total Score: 3.9 Glass shared with Dima Sh. Appearance: opaque dark with a low head. Aroma: very fruity with flower and dark malt notes. Taste: same with flowery and grassy hoppy bitterness. Overall: interesting and unusual.
3.8 Draught pour @ Apex. Pours an opaque brown colour with a medium creamy nitro beige head. Nose is general toasted malt, and very old world dark beer in character. Flavour is toasted malt, mild caramel, burnt sugars, and a semi spiced/hoppy bittner finish. Different indeed.
3.9 Im Monks Cafe in Philly (draft). Dunkles Braun, eine angemessene Schaumkrone Aroma kräftig nach kalten Kaffee. Würzige Note. Kakao. Etwas rote Beere. Geschmack: Bittere Schokolade, Karamell, etwas Haselnuss. Scharfe Bitterkeit weit hinten im Rachen. Plötzlich kommend. Cremig. Schwerer Antrunk.
3.8 12oz bottle. Batch 99. Pours a very dark brown with a negligible beige head. Aroma is fig, leather, chocolate, and some wood. Initially soy sauce comes through, strongly, but it disappears as the beer warms. Taste is chocolate, licorice, fig, caramel, some leather, light spice, some soy sauce, some earth, some wood, and a hint of smoke. Some alcohol in the finish. Medium-full body. Relatively low, somewhat grainy carbonation. Oily mouthfeel.
4.5 Pours dark copper, minor carbonation, small off-white head and just some sticky lacing. Aroma of caramel, liquorice and ripe figs. Tastes quite sweet but balanced but bitter hops, with malted barley, caramel, brown sugar, liquorice, fruity ripe fruits with some bittering hops to balance. Smooth, viscous, light carbonation, a pleasure to sip. Excellent ale, and this is one of their standard ones!
4.0 Bottle at the Burger Joint, Singapore. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a mostly lasting frothy off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, caramel, burnt treacle, liqouirce, red berry fruits, light spicy hop. The flavour is moderate sweet, liquorice alcohol bitter, with a rich, fruity, slightly oily, earthy, leather, fruity, warm alcohol bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Awesome. Worth the wait.
4.2 Flaska från trade. Vintage 2013.
4.1 Draft at the source. Dark brown, beige head. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, smoke, leather. Excellent.
4.1 Draft at Tria Taproom. Oily black pour with a dense ivory ring. Intense chewy dark plumy malts. German liquorice. Treacle. Dark fruit. Black walnuts. Glossy dark chocolate caramels. Plums and prunes. Medium full body. Lingering notes of charcoal, tobacco, and leather. Excellent sipper. Lots going on.
4.0 Bottle, from City Hops. Pours cloudy reddish dark brown with large spongy tan head, woodsy caramel malt and sweet spirit aroma, low carbonation, initially bitter woodsy caramel malt taste with alcohol undertones, nutmeg, sweet molasses, somewhat thick body, long finish. Quite complex flavor profile as described by others.
4.1 Bottle from Whole Foods Portland. My last bottle from Portland and I am not dissapointed at all. This is a great and complex beer. Reminds me a bit of mein avientus. Rich, deep, slight spice. Special.
4.2 12 oz Batch 98 bottle picked up in a recent trip to Portland. (No date; those with the secret decoder ring can probably tell from the batch number - even their irritatingly pretentious "vintage guide" only goes to batch 85 - but I find this too gimmicky and irritating. Just put a date on there, for crying out loud...) Poured into a 16 oz stemmed tulip. Aroma of alcohol, leather, dark fruit. Short tan head, disappearing fairly quickly to a bubbly cap and ring. Leaves a tan coating on the glass as you tip to drink. Deep, dark brown color with tan sediment. Thick, almost chewy, body. Taste is a bit sweet in the beginning, with flavors of raisins, leather, roasted malts and alcohol with a moderately bitter finish and aftertaste nicely offsetting the sweet malts. The alcohol taste lets you know this is a big beer. A wonderful sipping beer.
4.5 Durch den JerkieWolf gedreht 😜brüchig Wacholderjung & auf der geeky 🍇🍓🍎side 💥 FETT!!! Tap Stuff in Portland....HAIR OF THE DOG TAPROOM Madness!!!
4.1 Draft at the brewery in Portland. Dark brown opaque, with smoky aroma and full body. Chocolate and raisin taste, lingering dark fruit finish.
4.1 Sample at Beavertown Extravaganza 2017. A dark brown coloured beer with a beige head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, cocoa, dried fruit, rye, smoke, peat and wood.
4.1 It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is low. It is also clear. There are a lot of rich malt aromas. It has a bit of molasses, nuts, and toffee. There are also some dried fruit notes with alcohol and very slight port. The flavors are led by molasses and nuts. There is a bit of smoke in the background. There is also a bit of dried fruit and some vinous elements. It has a full body with smooth alcohol warmth. Carbonation is low. Overall, this has a quality complex combination of malt and ester aromas and flavors.
4.5 Earlier Rating: 12/9/2017 Total Score: 3
4.1 On tap at the brewery. Very dark with perhaps a slight red hue. Smoke, chocolate, leather, and roast. Roasty and a little bitter. Medium-full bodied.
4.1 Drank while writing 22-04-18. Liked it a lot! Some smoke but not too much, nice bitter/chocolate taste. Good combi. Like it!
4.1 3oz on tap @ Hair of the Dog. Pours very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts. Flavor is sweet roasted malts, leather, alcohol, chocolate, some smoke, hops. Very nice.
4.0 Pours a dark mahogany brown with a medium sized foamy tan head. Aroma of sweet dark malts, chocolate, and dried fruits. Medium body with lots of creamy lacing. Smooth with a taste of sweet dark malts, cocoa, figs, dates, and a hint of maple syrup. Leaves a nice creamy coating in the mouth for a long lasting lingering aftertaste. Complex flavors that create a very unique experience. Not harsh or bitter. Hides the alcohol very well. Very enjoyable.
3.9 12 oz. bottle, shared with Michael. Pours black, with a medium, bubbly, khaki head. The aroma is butter toffee, pipe tobacco, peat, rye, chalk, and raw cocoa. Sweet at first, with a nice, dry, bitter finish. Medium to heavy body, with a chalky, dry mouthfeel. This is a nicely done, dry, malty, and complex beer. Excellent.
