Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws (2003-)

Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws (2003-)

Doggie Claws has a deep copper color and an intense hop character. I use Simcoe and Amarillo hops along with Organic Pilsner malt, British crystal and dark wild flower honey collected on Mt. Hood. The beer is ready to drink now but will improve with age. Happy Holidays from the curs at Hair of the Dog. - Alan Sprints, Brewmaster

3.7 Interesting beer. Pours golden amber with a light tan head. Hoppy malt aroma with a silky texture. A bit tart and the aftertaste is more happy than expected. Like it.
3.5 Sample at Beavertown Extravaganza 2017. A dark amber coloured beer with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, bread, dried fruit, resin, chocolate, vanilla, alcohol and with a bitter finish. 7-4-7-3-14
3.8 12 ounce bottle A world class brewer like Hair of the Dog begins with the bar set high. This meets all expectations and makes me wonder how much longer a bottle might last before it fades. Certainly after five it was still going strong. Aroma / Appearance - A deep chocolately brown base melts away under an ivory head. Old leather, chocolate, and malts resemble an English style old ale at this point. Flavor / Palate - Full bodied and sticky waves of flavor burst onto the tongue. The big boozy finish carries with it the tastes of toffee, chocolate, malt, and creamy pie filling. Any hops have long ago subsided. This well done release exemplifies the staying power of a brewery who can still stand out even as the competition explodes around it.
4.3 On tap at the brewery. Super hazy reddish copper with a resilient khaki head. Sweet and a little boozy with tons of raisin. Dark fruit, especially raisin, and caramel aroma. Fairly full bodied.
4.3 Deep dark plummy hue under a thin foamy light khaki head. Nice earthy raisin-fruity aroma that’s a little sticky sweet with a big honey tone throughout. Full flavor that’s like honey coated raisins, deep plummy sweet malts, a touch of woody nuances and a slightly warming bitter finish.
4.6 The color is dark amber with a tan head. There are ruby highlights that can be seen. It is quick clear. Head retention is fairly low. There are sweet malt aromas with a sherry like quality. There are citrus aromas in the background with low levels of caramel and bread. It starts malty sweet with rich caramel flavors. Molasses flavors and citrus are in the background. There is a low bit of orange with some noticeable alcohol. It has a full body with pleasant alcohol warming. The warming is quite smooth. Overall, strong malty rich beer with quality hop and other flavors.
3.8 Poured a caramel with off white. Aroma is sweet malts. Taste rich caramel high boost.
3.6 (On tap @ Birreria Volo, Toronto, Jan 19/18) Pours a clear dark reddish amber with a small stable off white head. Notes of caramel, toasty malt, pine resin, citrus pith, dried fruit, booze, moderately sweet, fairly high bitterness, some alcohol burn. A bit watery/lacking in flavour concentration for its strength. A bit less than medium bodied with average carbonation. Just not particularly inspiring, HotD is capable of making a much better barley wine than this. Maybe not in the best condition?
4.2 12floz bottle, 2011 edition, 11% ABV, large snifter snifter glass. This beer pours with a one finger head, and it's beigeness stays atop a ruby hued dark-brown body. Smells like a confectionery item - sweet caramel and rock candy. At this point, the taste firmly settle in malt bomb territory - brown sugar and molasses (yes both) dominant. Mild bitterness is noted, but it seems mostly there to avoid the palate from being too syrupy. A thick and chewy beer that I found to be worthwhile.
3.7 Draught @ Hatten. Pours mahogny with no head. Notes of sherry, vanilla and sweet carrots in aroma. Sweet alcoholic taste with notes of milk chocolate, vanilla and dried fruits. The mouthfeel could be smoother and thicker.
3.8 Draught at Omnipollos hatt. Pours red amber, no head. Aroma of dark fruits, cherries, tobacco and a little leather. Smooth, sweet taste of chocolate, plums, resin, raisins and a warming finish.
