3.4 Poured from bottle, dark red color with no head. I actually think this one lost its carbonation. The aroma is a funky/tart smell, but not strong enough. Taste is flat. I'll have to try this again.
2.9 2012 vintage. Slightly dirty amber color, no head. Aroma is sharp vinager and sour oak. Well let me say that I really hate this style as a whole I don’t know why people enjoy drinking vinager and dirty butthole but I guess if that is your thing...... Enjoy. Thankfully this is mild on the vinager with a lightly oaky finish. I’m sure this is good for the style bit its not something I would ever reach for, especially for the price. Thanks for sharing Brian... I guess?
3.5 Poured from bottle orange brown color with no head. Aromas of tart berries and oak with funky yeast. Taste is slightly sweet with a lingering bitter sour finish.
3.5 2012 12oz bottle. Pours cloudy amber with an off white head. Pungent aroma of tart cherry, acetic. Flavor is caramel sweet, tart cherry, cherry skin bitterness. Oak and oxidation in the finish. There’s a lot going on here, but it just doesn’t wow me.
3.9 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a hazy reddish brown color with an average frothy off-white head with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy tart berry fruit and sour yeast aroma. Copious body and a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sour & tart flavor with a medium to heavy tart & sour finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex solid beer.
3.9 12 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a large off white head that dissipates quickly. The aroma and flavor have tart/sour dark fruit, cherry, quite a bit of wood, Brett funk, some acidity, sherry notes, interesting interactions, seems smoothed out, this was an 09 vintage.
4.0 poured an orange brown in color with a covering of white foam. aroma has barrel wood, medium funkiness, cherry, some acidity, and an interesting sweet fruity/citrus thing. mouth feel is light and the carbonation is real light. flavor gets a bit more acidity going, brett, sherry, oak, vanilla, cherry, and a dry citrus rind. lots of yeasty stuff going on but the barrel medley keeps pace.
4.1 2009 vintage bottle from the brewery. Pours a blood orange color with a short patch head. Really light aroma with slightly sour cherry. Slightly tart flavor with a really woody, slightly dry finish. Good stuff.
3.8 12oz bottle from 2012 to snifter. Aroma of tart oakiness. Creamy mouthfeel. Plenty of head with good retention. Tart flavor with lots of oak and cherry.
3.6 Poured from bottle to glass. Copper hue with no head. Aroma is toffee, oak, cherry, sugar. Mouthfeel is decent with a full body and no head. Taste is sweet with a tart following. Overall this is a decent beer but is still.
3.7 Bottle to snifter (2012 vintage). Looks good; a very cloudy amber with thin lacing that is a very light caramel. Smells good too; vinous, oaky, and mildly tart with a bit of funk. Some cherry too. Tastes like it smells, but more malty than vinous. A light candied presence. Solid on the palate with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Enjoyable, but smells better than it tastes.
3.8 Bottle, shared by TvM at game night. Two epic American Flanders style in one night! This one followed Deschutes Planete Rouge, and I must say that this brew was the runner-up, although still distinctly excellent. Lovely rich sweet malt character married to gentle lactic sourness, sherry notes are here along with subtle oak. Very nicely done, perhaps a bit mellow with respect yo sourness.
3.9 Light vinegar aroma. Crisp body, gentle acetic sourness, not too tart but enough to round out the taste.
3.5 Bottle: Thanks, Chris. Murky copper-ish pour, not as red as assumed with only mild translucency at the edges. A small, gray-tinted head bubbles up softly & settles as a weak collar. Slight sourness in the aroma; lactobacillus with mildly tart cherry skins, lactic acid, a big bout of vinegar, & a very small vinous character towards the back-end. A good bit of wet oak throughout, as well. Less sour on the palate than the nose. Notes of Red Delicious apples, cherries, & tart grapes. Vinous & a little booze in a wine-like sort of way; warming, but mellow. Plenty of oak, slightly tannic with a finish of cherry, grape, & lightly acetic lemon-y notes. Creamy mouth feel, kind of unexpected there. A good beer, but I expected just a little more, given the brewer’s pedigree.
3.5 Bottle thanks to Chow. Pours a cloudy copper with no head. The aroma is strong oak, cherry skin, funk. Thin mouth with strong oak, light sourness, good.
4.3 "A wonderful soft, fruity sour. 2012 bottle smells of oak, funk and leather. Quite wine like in the flavor, and a nice balance between sweet, sour, tannic...just good stuff."
4.0 Murky golden, no head. Punchy crisp apple and sherry and bright nose crashing into the initial taste. Tartness is a cushion for a tingly fading chewy richness. Cursive and backwater bitter towards the finish. Bottle, Independence Tasting, Cheers Paul for the long haul
4.1 Bottle thanks to Paul. Reddish amber with off white head. Aroma is nice, spicy, woody, dried fruits. Taste is nice, full of dried fruits, spicy funk, wood. Dry and tart. Delish
4.1 2009 12oz at the brewery in 2012 and 2013. Pours a darker orange to mahogany hue. Nose of soured fruit, blasts of oak, sherry, and some cherry. Flavors are similar with elements of sour red funk, barnyard, dark fruit, figs, sweet sherry, and candy. So thick and dank.
4.0 Bottle shared with Belgbeergeek . Pours clear, dark orange . Good white head . Smell is sour, oaky . Taste is dry , sour , very fruity . Intense, but very elegant at the same time . Nice !
4.0 Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle. Dark amber pour with a white head. The aroma has some heavy cherry and sherry notes with some toffee thrown in. The flavor is similar, with some acidic cherry character complemented by some sweet toffee malt. There is also a fairly strong vinegar component to the flavor. The mix of sweet and sour is very well done. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
4.0 Bottle thanks to mora...Pour is caramel with thin fading head..Nose is funk, tart, bugs, oak, spice...Taste is some vinegar, spice, oak, berries, tart, leather..
3.7 Bottle at the Brewery. Pour is murky amber with a small tan head that quickly dissipated. Tangy, figgy, green apples, caramelly, bready, and pears in the aroma. Taste is sour apples, lemon peel, biscuit, caramel, and pears with a moderately sour finish. Medi body with soft carbonation. Decent stuff.
3.9 At Hair of the Dog with Taylor, Stephen, Dina, and Rob. Pours dark mustard brown orange. Aroma is sour fig, apple. Taste is dark sour, huge oak, woody, figs, fizzy carmalized apple. Finish is alcohol.
4.1 Bottle consumed at Hair of the Dog. Copper pour with a fleeting white head. Sour cherry and vinegar aromas. Nice vinegar, sour cherry, and malty notes. Good body and mouthfeel. Well done...
3.6 2012 Vintage. $24 for a 12poz bottle! Poured an amberish color with an off white head. Fruity, lighter funk, wood, light vinegar, and cherries. This one was OK, but does not justify the price tag.
4.0 2012 bottle at home. Pours an ugly murky brown with gorgeous creamy, dense head that lasts and lasts, continually replenished by the lively stream of bubbles rising in the glass. Aroma: Cherries at the forefront, sitting atop a balsamic base. A touch of vanilla, a nice earthy mustiness, and even a bit of lemon zest. Really nice aroma. Taste: not as sweet as I expected from the cherry/vanilla combo of the aroma. The mustiness is more prominent here than in the aroma. Assertive balsamic-sourness, with mild bitterness in the finish as well. Vanilla still shows itself, as does an almost astringent tannic note. Palate: With my first few sips this felt a little hollow/thin, but as I drink more and have acclimated it feels just right. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Overall: I recall not really enjoying this fresh, but now I’m glad I still have a bottle left. This is quite nice.
3.6 Bottle shared by verbalessence at Antwerpen park bench tasting. Flat-ish red - orange pour. Tons of bourbon strangely enough, light winey notes, cherries, very very light acetic notes. Taste is sweet fruity, vanilla light acidity, lots of alcohol. Palate is med-full bodied, sweet with low carbonation. Not exactly an accurate flemish red, but still interesting.
3.7 Bottle (330 ml). 2012 vintage. Shared by verbalessence, thanks! Murky caramel color with a small persistent beige head and little lacing. Aroma is of vanilla, red fruits, strong wooden notes, caramel and Sherry. Taste isn’t very sour. There’s a good amount of vanilla here too, red fruits, wood, Sherry, caramel and light acidic presence. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Woodsy finish. I’m not sure I would have classified this one as a Flander’s Red in a blind tasting, but it’s still quite tasty.
3.2 2012 Vintage split 3 ways. A - Bright red pour, looks mahogany and crimson in the glass S - Nose is bursting with cherry, fruit and wood. T - Acidic at the finish, not overly sour. Has more rotten cherry old moldy fruit taste. oak and wine tannic grape juice M - Thin, oily and dry O - Nice nose, the taste falls short. It’s not that old of a beer.
