Hangar 24 Barrel Roll No. 03: Pugachev's Cobra - Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

Russian Imperial Stout brewed with maple syrup and aged in bourbon barrels

Pugachev's Cobra: The brainchild of Victor Pugachev -- not for the faint of heart. Pilot suddenly raises the aircraft nose to near vertical before dropping back to attack mode.

Get ready for an assault on your senses with Pugachev's Cobra, an intense Russian Imperial Stout. This rich, black beauty with a thick caramel head is bursting with aromas of chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon, licorice and dark fruits, while flavors of chocolate-covered plum, sweet malt, bourbon, and roasted coffee explode on your pallet. This is no ordinary beer; three different dark roasted malts and rich maple syrup are combined in a truly unique brewing process to create complexity and depth. Once fermented, it’s then aged for eight months in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. This powerful concoction is designed to be enjoyed now with friends or cellared to perfection and savored in the years to come.

4.0 Dark brown, rich molasses, tarry deep fruits, touch of alcohol. Rich chocolate, alcohol, burnt fruit.
4.1 A pour from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Vintage 2013. Pours an almost black with no head. Aroma is fruity bourbon. Similar taste with leather, candies, chocolate notes. A bit boozy. Very nice.
4.1 Rami Rami is drinking a Barrel Roll No. 3 - Pugachev's Cobra (2016) by Hangar 24 Craft Brewing at garwolińska Zboze, skorka od chleba, kawa, teoche beczki w aromacie. O dziwo ta beczke czuc w smaku duzo fajniej. Niewiele ciala. Niemalo slodyczy.
3.8 Lekka beczka, spora alkoholowosc, karmel, melano, czekolada, nuty likierowe. Wygl?d ok mo?e piana za slaba. W smaku slodycz, czekolada, alkohol. Sporo cia?a ale troche beczki brakuje. Finisz praliny czekoladowe i alkohol.
4.4 2016. W aromacie sporo pumpernikla, jakiś orzech, wanilia. W smaku sporo wanilii, syrop klonowy. Nie no w smaku wanilia atakuje. Trochę kokosa. Jakieś belgijskie praliny. Super piwo. Chociaż pite przy So happens it's Tuesday wypada słabiej.
3.8 750ml bottle pours dark brown black with small tan head. Nose and taste have dark chocolate, oats and dark grain, plum, dark fruit, baker's chocolate, moderate sweetness, some nice barrel notes, kind of thin, overall a bit of a letdown but still a fine beer.
4.0 Hangar 24 Craft Brewery - Barrel Roll No. 03 - Pugachev's Cobra 2016. Russian Imperial Stout Brewed With Maple Syrup And Aged In Bourbon Barrels. Wspaniały aromat ciemnych owoców, mokrego dębowego drewna, wanilii, karmelu i naleśników oblanych czekoladą. Pod spodem ukrywa się świeżo zaparzona kawa. Smak: W smaku beczka po bourbonie daje zaledwie umiarkowane akcenty wanilii i mokrego drewna. Nie jest nazbyt intensywna. Syrop klonowy tak ładnie zaakcentowany w aromacie, tutaj gdzieś ginie w tłumie. Użyto aż 3 różne rodzaje ciemnych palonych słodów. Tę paloność czuć od razu. Splata się ona z gorzką czekoladą i sporą dawką mocno palonej kawy w stylu double espresso. Całość zamykają akcenty ciemnych owoców, a w szczególności śliwek i wiśni. Warto sprawdzić i ocenić samemu. Potencjał jest ogromny!
4.0 Great beer, better name.
3.7 Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle corked and capped. Black with dark brown highlights small beige head. Aroma is bourbon, medium/thick body, lower carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is boozy bourbon, some chocolate. The booze subtracts from this one.
4.1 Smells very roasty and slightly sour. Bourbon barrel, molasses, chocolate, vanilla, leather, booze, everything I like in an Impy. Jet black with a thin brown head. Tastes like everything from the aroma with a long lasting roasty aftertaste. Complex with ABV well hidden. The palate was aa letdown; it’s on the thin side and doesn’t match the size of this beer. This was an excellent offering from a brewery I had never tried before.
3.7 Dark brown no lacing. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, bourbon and vanilla. Heavy alcohol sand heat on the palate
4.0 Bottle shared by a friend. Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma of malt, sweet maple, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and caramel. Malty flavor with maple and chocolate accents before a bourbon finish.
4.0 750 ml bottle at home thanks to Mike!! Black color with beige brown head. Malty aroma, roasted , chocolate, light coffee, mocha, dark dried fruits, vanilla, alcohol, wood. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.
4.5 This 750 ml corked and caged 13.8% ABV monster was brought to our epic beer tasting by grandson Nick Allen. It poured like used motor oil into my glass. Black and with a big brown frothy head. The nose on this is intense. It shows lots of chocolate, licorice, raisins, dates, dark ripe fruit, wood, and bourbon. Full in body the mouthfeel is thick and oily. The flavor brings every thing the aroma promised with the chocolate, licorice, raisins, dates, dark ripe fruit, wood, and bourbon all arriving but there is also vanilla, syrup, and coconut. A little warming heat shows up in the finish and there is coffee bitterness as well. This beer is fabulous with amazing complexity and depth. Thanks Nick, I guess i have to change my will
3.6 Tap at Neighborhood in San Diego. Dark pour with a white ring head. Super boozy hot. Some wood. Vanilla. But too hot to appreciate fully.
3.9 Bottle @ Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Color dark brown with medium head. Aroma malt, caramel, chocolate, alcohol, wood. Taste sweet, chocolate, bourbon, malt, caramel.

Aroma is malty and roasted with dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, caramel, raisins, warming bourbon, oak and hints of toasted coconut . Taste is sweet, roasted bitterness, slight salty and warming. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, creamy texture. Warming bourbon finish, bitter dark chocolate with a light dry feature, sweet caramel and raisin, licorice and spicy oak notes.
4.4 Loads of heavy and deep flavours like coffee, bourbon, toffee, bitter chocolate. Nice barrel aging! Overall a very nice BA stout.
4.4 Bottle; pours black with a thin brown head; aroma is sweet and rich with chocolate, licorice, and vanilla with hints of bourbon, wood, and dark fruits; taste is equally rich with chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, and vanilla with some wood, bourbon, and dark fruit notes; finish is dry with bitter chocolate and a some light alcohol warming; nicely done

4.1 Bottle, 750ml. A dark beer with minimal brown head. Aroma is of coffee, roasted malts and alcohol. Taste is bery bitter with some dark chocolate undertones. Roboust bodied with some carbonation, smooth and with a rich bourbon character. Lingering aftertaste of dark bitter chocolate and roasted malts.
4.2 Bottle, 750ml, 2016 edition. Opaque dark brown, frothy brown head. Strong roasted and bourbon aromas, undertones of lactose, dark fruits, aged wood. Full bodied, soft carbonation. Smooth and creamy. Thick and oily. Medium sweet, medium to heavy bitter. Rich roasted flavors into a heavy finish.
4.4 RELEASE 2015 with 13.5% abv. Pours black oily, opaque, with tiny brown head, which tranforms itself to a ring around the glass. Aroma: roasted grain, dark malts, which takes on toasted toffee, espresso coffee, dark chocolate, coffee beans, supported with maple syrup, dark fruit esters, some vanillin and bourbon. Flavor is very similar with intense malt flavors, roasted grain flavors, pretty well balanced with bourbon note, supported with esters which takes on dark fruits, some vanillin...alchohol is noticeable as sherry-like, body is full, texture creamy/velvetly, carbonation is low. RATE FOR 2015 RELEASE: 8-5-9-5-17= 4.4 RELEASE 2016: pours black, opaque with foamy brown head which transforms itself to a ring around a glass. Aroma- flavors: intense roasted grain, dark malts with rich chocolate note, coffee, molasses, vanillin, intense bourbon. Finish is dry. 4.2 2 Jan 2016, tap. Black. Nose is tobacco, sweet, molasses, alcohol. Med/full body and moderately fizzy. Sweet, tobacco, woody, very boozy, brown sugar. Great!
3.8 Bottle shared at Jason’s. Big boozy dark medium body with some maple in there. Nice.
3.4 Bottle @cgarvieuk - The Xmas Tasting 2016. Pours black, very small tan head when poured it went in 5 seconds. Nose is chocolate, slight wood, slight malts. Taste is caramel, chocolate, toffee, slight coconut, slight vanilla.
3.5 750, corked and baled. Thanks, G&K! Another nice score for sure. Pours an opaque matte black with a dense and creamy thick burnt tan head that sticks around for a while. Huge bourbony nose, almost off-puttingly boozy even when it’s still freezing cold from the fridge. Intensely sweet, both from the maple syrup as well as from chocolatey malt notes. Sticky thick body, minimal carb. Hot, boozy, chocolatey, sweet, sticky, thick, heavy mid-palate. Out of balance to the point that it’s silly, but I still managed to knock it back, with help on half the bottle, over the course of an episode of The Wire and some other knocking around the house. Worth the price but far better for a bottle share than for consumption as a twosome. Silly of me not to hold onto it for a little longer to share it.
3.9 Bottle at dirty Matt’s. Dark brown with a thin mocha film. Oak, maple syrup, oak, slight chalkiness, baking chocolate, charcoal, leather, boozy, vanilla bean. Full body and moderate carbonation, somewhat dry with a nice smooth boozy and bittersweet taste.
4.2 Bottle shared by my nyebutchcoo friend Paul from San Diego. Pitch black color. Thick beige head. Aroma of alcohol, milk chocolate, espresso. Taste is epic alcohol, espresso, dark chocolate, marginal coconut, dried plums. A high octane alcohol beer. Impressive!
