Hangar 24 Barrel Roll No. 04: Wing Over

Hangar 24 Barrel Roll No. 04: Wing Over

A well executed Wing Over is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Wing Over is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Wing Over’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed.

3.7 2015 bottle. Dark amber shade. Finger of head. Aroma of toffee, oak, butterscotch, vanilla, brown sugar, raisin. Chewy texture with more toffee and red fruits. Quite dry. Mouthfeel is a bit flabby, and the heat can be distracting, but it’s pretty nice stuff.
4.1 Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Aroma of malt, raisin, ripe fruit and vanilla. Rich flavor of vanilla, raisin, ripe fruit, caramelised malt and a long rich finish. I love these heavy bourbon BA barley wines.
4.1 Red brown colour, white head. Aroma of bourbon, red fruits, malts, raisins, vanilla. Bitter sweet flavour, malts and vanilla. Finish malts, honey and bourbon. (from 75cL bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Thanks for sharing, BDomua!)
3.7 Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1, small sample. Thanks all for sharing! Slight hazy copper color, short frothy head. Aroma of bourbon, raisin, vanilla, caramel. Bit boozy. Vanilla, cookie, boozy. Ok, but I’m not as enthusiastic as my fellow tasters.
4.1 750ml bottle thanks to Steve. Pours out amber topped with a small head. Nose is caramel big malty sweetness bourbon barrel vanilla spice some pit fruit. Taste is more of the heavy malts nice sweetness plenty of the bourbon barrel goodness vanilla and some pit fruit on the end.
4.4 Thank you Benzai! 750 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT 2016-1. Bottle # 3246/7587. In Belgium that is like a massive batch going to industrial, USA it is small & numbered, crazy. Dark brown amber, little head. Nose is massive thick molasses, sugar, candy, warming thick molasses, bourbon, sweet, sugar, vanilla, rich. Taste is alcoholic sugar, molasses, caramel, vanilla, warming, maple, sugar, thick sweet malts, caramel, warming, very faint bitterness,…. Thick warming malty & sugary. Delicious, awesome, this is how I like it. - tried again less super crazy about it but still very good. 4.8 -> 4.4
4.5 Sampled from bottle shared @ ZZT 2016-1. Nice dark red to red-brown color, medium sized beige head that leaves fair lacing. Aroma is malts, sweet malts, whisky, bourbon. Taste malts, some sweetness, whisky, bourbon, bitter, wood, oak. Absolutely lovely. Full body, medium carbonation. Lovely beer. Very nice indeed!
4.3 Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Amber to brown colour with a small offwhite head. Smells sweet, malty, barleywine. Tastes lovely. Tastes caramal, malt, sweet, pretty nice. Medium body, soft carbo.
3.4 The beer is a deep brown amber. Opaque. Thin beige head. Fine bubbles. Big sweet toasted malt flavor. Lots of caramel, a little bit of molasses, treacle. Some vanilla. Medium barrel notes. Some nice Rye and Bourbon action. Unexpected lack of sweetness in the taste. Lots of oak. It’s kinda weird. The feel is rich and full, really nice, but it somehow lacks the accompanying sweetness. I’m not really sure how they did that. It’s all wood and barrel. Pretty good amount of rye. It just almost completely lacks that sweet backbone to hold up the other flavors. Very odd beer.
4.2 Shared bottle at Craft. Poured hazy rusty brown with tan head. Nose was caramel, hops, spicy rye, oaky whiskey. Complex flavor, with notes of caramel malt, rye, oaky whiskey, dark fruit, and a very complex finish. Delicious.
4.5 Bottle: 2013 Hammerhead #1220/3905. Pours a viscous dark brown with a red hue and no head but an oily film for a cap. AROMA: loads of Bourbon, caramel, malty, herbal hops, rye spice, spices, toffee, molasses, dark bitter cocoa butter, floral, faint lemon zest, burned brown sugar, woody, oak char, bitterness, slight chile pepper, coffee, herbs, vanilla, licorice, phenols, earthy and boozy. TASTE: caramel, coffee, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, malty, maple syrup, molasses, spices, faint citrus, soy sauce, woody, oak char, earthy, hop bitterness, herbal, tannins, licorice, raisin, toffee, chile pepper, smoke and burned brown sugar. AFTER TASTE: caramel, hop bitterness, citrus, malty, spices and rye/bourbon with a thick syrup spiced and bitter tannin finish.
4.0 Bottle shared at Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours dark brown with a modest beige head snd a complex aroma festuring coffee, whiskey and dark fruit. There is a fruity dark molasses flavor with a lot of whiskey in the finish. Quite nice. Earlier Rating: 4/16/2012 Total Score: 4 Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours dark brown with a modest beige head and a sour alcohol aroma. There is a hearty dark malt and vanilla flavor with lots of rye whiskey and a dry maple finish. Very complex and a nice sipping beer.
2.9 750 mL bottle. Deep amber body. Smells of coffee, that lends a little bit of a green pepper aroma. Lightly nutty with some fruitiness, too. Doesn’t smell that sweet. Taste is nutty with caramel malt. Coffee is sharp and bitter. Doesn’t have the green pepper flavor. Bitter and oaky finish. Medium heavy. I expected it to be sweeter and strong on the barrel. Still isn’t that interesting.
4.5 Great big aromas of caramel. Rich thick brown body with lasting and lacing tan head. Smooth thigh nuttiness dries to a licorice finish.
3.1 A: Deep brown with a light off white head. N: Toffee, caramel, pear T: Caramel, pear O: Quite boozy and pretty bitter. Decent.
4.0 2014 vintage: very impressive and impeccably balanced for a 11% beer. Very easy to pick the bourbon wood on the nose with a sweet peaty aroma. Sweet wood and more sweet boozy flavours in the palate. Long drive and some spice to finish. Seriously good.
(Rating #6687)
4.4 Pours a hazy and very dark chestnut brown color that’s completely opaque with a one finger beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Great retention for the style and ABV. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Great barrel presence in the aroma. Lots of spicy brandy and bourbon along with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut. Nice leathery malt backbone with vinous dark fruit notes and caramel sweetness. The barrel character is perfectly integrated into the notes of the base beer. Full bodied with a strong barrel character and plenty of spicy booze but it’s nicely integrated into the barleywine flavors. Strong dry oak presence with lots of brandy, spicy bourbon, vanilla and toasted coconut followed by leathery malt, caramel sweetness, alcohol and vinous dark fruit, notably date, fig and plum. Really well balanced with excellent barrel integration. Complex and flavorful yet very easy to drink considering the high abv. Slight heat and warmth in the finish without being harsh. Plenty of delicious spirit without becoming overwhelmingly boozy or overpowering. Excellent!
4.0 Draught at West Coast Barbecue & Brew, La Mesa, during SDBW 2015. Hazy deep amber beer with a small beige head. Malty fruity aroma, caramel, vinous, figs, raisins, caramel, licorice notes. Fruity vinous flavor, nuts, caramel, toffee, licorice, chocolate notes, some warming alcohol. Very nice barley wine.
4.2 Bottle. Pours a transparent brownish amber with minimal head. Aroma and taste of caramel, vanilla, some booze, and bourbon. Very nicely balanced.
4.3 My Bottom Line: This exquisite Barrel-Aged Barley Wine develops deep caramel, vanilla, candied fruit and milk chocolate over resinous hops and their bitterness. Further Personal Perceptions: -A slice of foam covers misty amber-red. -This is obviously sweet, but the specialty malt flavors are gorgeous. -Barrel-aging job is well done. -Alcohol warmth is felt, but not overly so for a 13.9% brew. -This malt bomb is a marvelous sipper. Bottle.
4.1 Bottle courtesy of hamilton23. Cheers, Steve! Pours a hazy caramel-Amber with an off-white head. Nose is toffee, caramel, some oxidation, brandy, raisin, and some vanilla. Flavor is similar with caramel, toffee, brandy, oxidation, oak, and some vanilla. Flavor has definitely mellowed with age- this is a 2012- it has oxidized, but in a mildly complimentary way.

4.2 Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. 750 mL bottle, 2013 vintage. The pour is a medium to dark brown with some amber and ruby notes and a small off-white head, leaving no lace. The aroma is pretty great. Vanilla and oak in front of a nice sweet dark fruit and an excellent malt profile. The flavor starts as expected. Good caramel and malts moving through a bit of bourbon heat and some light vanilla and oak notes. The finish is the surprising part. It finishes with a sweet butterscotch. The mouth feel is viscous and chewy with a soft velvety carbonation and a lingeringly smooth sticky toffee finish.
4.7 A top notch beer, this looks, smells and tastes mile a rich molasses dominated barley wine. 13.9% is quite a punch. The only real drawback is that I had a bit of heartburn the next day.
4.1 Bottle shared at San Diego’s Largest Bottle Share event. Lots of malty caramel and dark fruit. Very tasty.
3.9 A very complex barley wine. Bourbon flavored and sweet. Not very boozy but sort of hoppy. Pours reddish brown with a Lacey thick head. Had at hoveys party.
4.0 Black pour from 22oz bottle at Jensen park off white head. Light fluffy and creamy aroma. Taste is butterscotch, bourbon, whisky and strong. Smooth though.
