Hangar 24 Columbus IPA

Bitter and bold. This single hop american style IPA features 100

percent Columbus Hops for an intense citrus, floral and spicy aroma

and flavor. Five different malts form the rich backbone that balances

the hops’ 77 IBUs. The resinous mouthfeel is followed by a clean,

dry hopped finish that refreshes and satisfies.

Additional Information:

3.6 Pours a hazy orange-golden color, with a large, microbubble foam, off-white head. Grapefruit and cream on the nose. Mouthfeel is moderately powdery. Nice citrus flavor with good bitterness at the finish. Good IPA.
3.8 Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with a great beigish head leaving lace. Aroma is hop forward citric piny and fruity as is the flavor, well bitter indeed and it seems to stay forever.
3.2 Hop bomb. Poured slightly chilled with gigantic, foamy, frothy, cream-colored head that lasts all the way down and lots of clingy lace. Color is a nice, clear amber with loads of bubble trails. Aroma is a blend of hop, barnyard, yeast, malt. Flavor is totally dominated by hop; very bitter with a little malt coming at the end. Carbonation is ok, but body is confused by the intense bitter. Thank goodness for that smidgen of malt. Finish is like flavor, super long, and off flavors courtesy of hop. Also a little boozy.
3.8 22oz bottle pours a hazy, burnt orange with some cloudy, white head. Nose of pine, spruce, grapefruit, malt, caramel, orange, soap. Flavor is well balanced, malty, toasted bread, orange, pine, grapefruit, spruce, soap. Full, sticky finish.
2.2 Excellent hoppy smell, smooth malty taste behind the bitterness. Not too bitter while drinking, but stays around a little bit too long afterwards. Unbearable after 4 ounces.
3.5 Bottle. Hazy gold pour, white head, excellent retention/lace. Aroma of wood, apricot, citrus, caramel. Taste is bitter, woody, apricot, caramel. Palate is drier, average carbonation, bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Created a vigorous sizing of fluffy foam head while the liquid was a hazy glowing golden honey color. The aroma is bold with a heavy dosage of floral green hops that ooze citrus while a grassy aroma lurks in the background. The flavor is initially bitter with the taste of hops that has an organic raw honey and spicy profile to it but there is also a sweet taste of malts that actually convinced me this beer was actually interesting. Sort of reminds me of a west coast pale ale recipe I brewed at home once.
4.1 Pours amber with a white head. Very nice hop aroma. Citrus, floral, some pine but more fruity. Malt is noticeable but not overdone. Pretty well balanced and refreshing.
3.4 22oz bottle, purchased at BeerCraft. Pours a generally clear, orange-amber color; off-white head with modest retention and solid lacing. Earthy, floral, and orange-y hop character in the nose; slightly vegetal; some sugary sweetness. Medium-full body; fine-bubbled carbonation; grassy, citrusy, slightly vegetal IPA with a fair bit of core sweetness; alcohol levels keep things lean, but still not a great IPA. Lasting orange bitterness, alcohol, quiet sweetness.
3.3 Bottle from Windy City shared with Pat, Sean, Tony and Dan. Pours an amber body with nice thick off white head. Aroma is super caramel, sweet malty bread and light citrus hop. Mouthfeel is medium, super sweet but still holding somewhat of a hop profile - just a bit on the sweet side now. I would love to try this offering fresh and/or on draft.
3.7 Solid citrus aroma and palate, decent malt backbone supporting the alcohol, overall nicely made, but a little light on the palate
3.4 A smokey flavored ipa. Pours a nice golden yellow color. Very smooth and hoppy. Has a nice bitter finish.
4.1 Poured from 22oz bomber. Dark orange almost red. Cloudy. Peppery and hoppy citrus taste. Maybe some smokey taste. Delicious. And unique
3.6 cloudy orange pour , big white head..fruity hoppy aroma, taste is pine, creamy grapefruit, and hopps, pretty awesome ipa, made me happy!
3.7 Amber beer, light head, lemon smell, hoppy taste, great overall!! I'd have another.
3.5 Very refreshing taste with balance of citrus, bitter hops and malty sweetness. Very easy to drink ice cold with spicy foods and BBQ.
3.7 Bottle. Copper pour with thick off-white head. Heavy lacing. Fresh hop and citrus aroma. Well balanced with a little bite in finish. Grapefruit. Easy drinker @ 7%.
3.3 Pours copper with a frothy white head. Muted aroma... like almost none. But the flavor is outstanding. Strong floral and citrus (oranges) with a very nice malty balance. Palate is thick, but very smooth. Ecxept for the lack of any aroma, this is an outstanding beer.
3.0 Bottle - Pours hazy dark amber with a huge foamy white head. Nose is orange marmalade malt and lightly spicy herbal hops. Huge malty body up front on the first sip, with honey, herbal hops, and a bit of a spicy finish. Lots of sharpness and boozy qualities too. Medium body with nice carbonation. As were many of the bottles I purchased from Total Wine, I feel like this one had been on the shelf for awhile. Disappointed.
3.4 Pale golden color with a soft white head. Lightly malty arooma with a dry hop edge. Quite dry in taste...almost chewable hop character (lightly piney) and leaves you thirsty for another sip. Neither aggressive nor lacking in flavor...well done.
3.3 On tap at Mohawk Bend, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma of floral hops, flower fields, and some light malt notes. Flavour of floral hops, not much else. Good stuff.
3.4 Dark gold orange. Pretty flat nose... Pine and resin forward. Taste follows plus some orange. Decent IPA.
4.1 From Trader Joe’s in Huntington. Clear, golden pour. Lots of citrus- lemon, orange, bitter grapefruit. Some grass. Good malt backer to balance the hops. Very good! Wish we could get this in AZ.
3.1 A hazy brownish orange. Foamy off white head. Aroma is grassy, citrus, and dragon fruit. Medium body has some malt sweetness followed by bitter orange peel and more grapefruit. Finish is long.
4.5 Copper color nice head lacing. Aroma is piney hops with some citrucy notes. Taste is danky piney hop foreword with citrucy notes nice balance of malt. Smooth resiney mouth feel. Has a taste and aroma similar too Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Very excellent ipa!
4.2 Aroma is yeast, tropical fruit and a strong note of kiwi. The flavor is kiwi, tropical fruit, hop resin, an undercurrent of mild sweetness and a tangy/bitter finish.
3.9 They say you can often gauge a brewery by their India Pale Ale, so when Hangar 24 sent me a bunch of their beers to review I of course opted to start with the Columbus IPA. It’s an interesting beer that uses only the Columbus variety of hop in the brew (in addition to five unlisted malts). It’s got the strong bitterness you except from a West Coast IPA, but the balance of something more eastern. I like it. I poured a 22oz bomber into a tulip glass. Appearance: Dark hazy amber/orange hue. No carbonation visible, but it does form a large, eggshell colored, frothy head which retains and laces extremely well. Smell: Surprisingly malty with strong honey-like sweetness and noticeable dank/piney hop character. Taste: Hangar 24 Columbus IPA is definitely a brew that walks a fine line between single and double IPA. The hops are quite prominent at 77 IBUs and the body is quite strong as well to give it that more energy and attitude than your average IPA. The choice of using only Columbus hops is interesting, if not a bit daring since the hop imparts more raw bitterness than it does flavor. Though there is noticeable earthy/herbal hop flavors here: pine, tree bark, and a hint of garlic or onion (but in that good way). Let’s not forget the malt side, though. There’s a sweetness to be found here in the form of some honey and caramel lollipop flavors. They stay in the background, mostly, but give the beer a solid backbone to make it well-rounded and versatile. Drink this on its own or with a strong meal and it’ll work well either way. Drinkability: Though there’s a lot of bitterness and overall body to Hangar 24 Columbus IPA, it’s not a challenge to drink (well maybe to newbies). The mouthfeel is on the thicker side, but it’s quite soft with a smooth texture. The hops do linger, but it’s not nearly as astringent as many other beers of this caliber. At 7% ABV it’s surprisingly light on its toes and won’t wear you down.
4.3 Really nice, IBU’s were well chosen and doesnt quite drink like a 77 IBU ipa, but is hidden in the maltiness and overall well crafted. Really nicely chosen grain bill,, its a hint of cacao, bready light malt, and clean easy to drink, but tasty and satisfies.
2.6 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, thanks to Aaron for the pour! Clear red-orange with white head, aroma brought notes of biscuit, bread, some veggies, cooked corn/dms notes, hints of a cardboard as well, slight pine and citrus notes, as well as a touch of caramel. Taste is a mix of caramel, biscuit, bread, slight spice, the dms comes through again, touch of pine, finishing fairly bitter, dry. Too bad.
3.4 Bomber thanks to thome50, pours a cleat copper with a large white head. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts, slight citrus, and musky hop spice. Sweet malts build in the flavor with a mellow hop spice bitterness on the finish. Nice!
