Hardywood Gingerbread Stout (GBS) - Bourbon Barrel

Hardywood Gingerbread Stout (GBS) - Bourbon Barrel

Gingerbread Stout Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels

Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

4.1 Nice mixture of bourbon, cinnamon and gingerbread, modest body for high ABV, sweet and spicy taste, more cinamon and gingerbread.
4.2 Bottle, 650 ml, shared with JFK10000, Max, Miro B. Black with tan head. Chocolate, smooth, bit spicy, sweet, spicy, peppermint, barrel, bourbon. Medium to full bodied. Quite smooth.
3.8 Taster pour at bottle share -- thanks Stacey. (2016 vintage) Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, thin ring of beige head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is bourbon, gingerbread, chocolate in the background. Taste is bourbon, mild chocolate and gingerbread. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with velvety smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, similar to the other GBS series but the bourbon barrel carries the day.
3.1 Sample from the bottle at Tide's residence, Helsinki. Color is very dark brown with small slightly brownish head. Aromas and flavours: Ginger, grain, christmas spices...
3.6 Bottle from a friend. Black color, beige head. Bitter taste with roasted malts, ginger, chocolate, bourbon, dark fruits, nuts and toffee. Bitter finish with roasted malts, ginger, chocolate, bourbon, dark fruits and toffee. Good imperial stout.
3.8 750ml bottle. Sweetish, spicy and slightly herbal with some roastiness, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and biscuity notes, hints of bourbon and oak. Interesting Christmas bewr, but not that much gingerbread notes.
4.2 750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/27/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with light notes of coconut, raisin, fig, date, licorice, smoke, oak char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, honey, lactose, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and bourbon barrel notes; with big strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with light notes of coconut, raisin, fig, date, licorice, smoke, oak char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness; and cinnamon/ginger/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, brown bread/crust, coconut, dark fruit, smoke, oak char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, honey, lactose, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet, and bourbon/cinnamon/ginger spiciness balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth of 10.6%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged spiced imperial milk stout! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, honey, lactose, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/spicy/tannic/drying finish; amazingly soft/silky feel. Amazingly balanced between rich malts, honey, lactose, spices, and bourbon barrel presence/integration. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected. Not overwhelming on any aspect.
4.4 2019.08.11. Бурбон с корицей и имбирем, в кремовом теле - это что-то!!!! Великолепный баланс, ноты дерева, дыма, земли, алкоголь отлично скрыт. Супер!!!
4.0 Rami Rami is drinking a Bourbon GBS (Gingerbread Stout) (2016) by Hardywood Park Craft Brewery at Browar Artezan Przyprawowo piernikowo, beczki nie za duzo ale obecna, czekolada, za duzo tych przypraw, ale i tak bardzo smaczne i spoko cialo Rami Rami: No piernikowe, nie da sie ukryc. przyprawowe, cynamonowe itd
4.1 Sampled at SdC 2019. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of bourbon, chocolate and gingerbread. The taste was similar to the aroma with more bourbon, chocolate, gingerbread, cinnamon, nutmeg with medium carbonation and a nice chewy aftertaste. Tasty.
4.0 22Feb2019 Spices, dark, toasted malts, molasses, gingerbread, sweet oak, bourbon. Hazy, very dark brown, medium, creamy, beige head. Medium sweet. More bourbon, sweet oak, toasted malts, molasses, gingerbread, soft carbonation, medium to full bodied. Outstanding. Keg at CBR19, Shoreditch.
3.2 No head to speak off, cola-coloured beer. Chili, Bourbon, Lierse vlaaikens (=spicy cakefilling). Lierse vlaaikens returning, herbal, speculoosherbs, and especially lots of cinnamon. Not balanced, undercarbonated if very well-bodied. Too much cinnamon by half, completely dominating the taste. Chili impression in the nose might well be the ginger.
3.9 Pour is dark almost black rich tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty. A little sweet for my taste but if you want dessert this is the one for you. Very festive and tons of gingerbread.
3.9 Bottle shared at Lucky Bamboo GBS share. Thanks Matthew! Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of foam that lingers. Bourbon and chocolate aromas with some light vanilla notes. Kind of one dimensional for a BA stout, but smooth and not overly boozy. Enjoyable.
3.7 Pours clear, very dark, nearly black. Small, off-white head with a creamy textrure and average to slightly above average stability. Smell is intense, as bourbon aroma's start filling up the room. The actual glass sniffing gives loads of the gingerbread spices. Cinnamon is represented most here. Taste is clearly spiced, one might say, overly spiced. Cinnamon - at a much to high intensity for my personal preference - is backed up by the vanilla and the chocolaty aroma, makeing the total at least interesting and drinkable (but still... Stop using these amounts of cinnamon, please !) . Mild boozyness. Medium thick body, average carbo. aftertaste is fading spices. Not too much left of the basebeer, spices really took over here. Bourbon is noticable, but mostly just brings some boozyness to the whole aspect. Worth sipping, for sure, but perhaps not one I'd seek out.
4.0 From notes. 2-man share at Mr. ebone1988’s abode on January 20. 750 mL bottle shared with Eric. 2014 vintage. The pour is a nice dark brown/black color with a thick khaki colored head and a couple spots of lace as it fades down to a thin cap. This one looks a bit thin. The aroma is pretty damn good .There is a heavy cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg right up front. There is a light vanilla and a hint of lactose sweetness underneath that. The bourbon creeps in a little on the finish. The flavor matches this pretty well. Lots of ginger and cinnamon up front with a growing chocolate and almost cookie-like addition to it. There is a good sweetness through the middle and a nice bourbon that rounds it out. A light oaky vanilla ties the end up well. The mouth feel is a medium body with a softer carbonation and a lingeringly bourbon-heavy cookie finish. I like this one quite a bit. These beers have never let me down, I don’t think. 8 4 8 4 16
4.0 Bottle shared with koleminer20. 2014 vintage. Aroma is Christmas cookie, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, lactose, roasted malt, great. Appearance is dark dark brown, light brown head, poured thickish. Taste is Christmas cookie, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, roasted malt, lactose, bourbon, barrel, slightly oxidized but still great. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, Christmas cookie bourbon aftertaste. Overall, quite fucking solid.
4.1 Bottle pours darkest brown with a one-finger tan head. Aroma is gingerbread, roast, dark chocolate, coconut, light bourbon and barrel notes. Flavor is sweet, bourbon-soaked gingerbread, considerable spice to it. Fuller body, lower carbonation. Really solid!
4.6 Tasted from bottle. Pours black with a light khaki head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, maple syrup, cinnamon. Thick and chewy. Flavors of cinnamon, bourbon, vanilla, cocoa, caramel, maple syrup, ginger, coffee. Very well done BA stout.
4.2 Aroma bourbon, Appearance black, Taste medium sweetness, Palate full body, thick feel, Overall a very smooth stout with flavors of coconut. I would suggest this beer to a friend.
4.2 Tap at BBE, pours a dark brown/black color with coffee colored head. Notes are Rich coconut shaving, fudge, oak, bourbon, vanilla bean, cinnamon bobka, and gingersnap. Not overly boozy or cloyingly sweet for the percent. Another tasty one from Hardywood.
4.2 $13.49 bomber from Wine Warehouse. Treating myself on a Monday of a long upcoming week. Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is gingerbread cookies, smoked wood, bourbon, vanilla, raisin, chocolate, coconut. Flavor is... oh that's nice. Milk chocolate, gingerbread cookie, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut, caramel, alcohol, dark chocolate. Lots of sweet spice without being cloying. Effing delicious. Good way to start the week.
3.9 Pours black with no head. Aroma is bourbon, roast and gingerbread. Taste is sweet chocolate, moving to gingerbread and finishing with bourbon. A great imperial stout.
4.2 At tasting. Aroma of chocolate, caramel fudge, vanilla, mocha and bourbon. Taste has ginger, vanilla, caramel fudge, chocolate, booze, oak, christmas cookie, mocha and a long chocolate bourbon ginger finish. Very nice.
3.9 pours an opaque black Brown from bottle. cinnamon raisin chocolate and vanilla oak. pretty good.
4.7 On tap at RVA taproom 11/12/17. Pours dark with small amount of lacing. Nice gingerbread aroma. Sweetish but not overly so and has a pleasant aftertaste. Bourbon Barrel version is much smoother and spices are nicely mellowed. Bourbon sits nicely in the background and really improves on what was already a really nice spiced stout.
4.1 9 3 8 4 17 Bottle shared at THT October. Near black with a short lived tan head. Aroma of cinnamon, gingerbread, spice, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut, caramel and toffee. Flavour is heavy sweet. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
4.1 Bottle shared at THT. Black with short lasting dark beige head. Massive cinnamon, vanilla, sweet chocolate, rum, light flowery, lots of spices, fudge, really get the gingerbread, soft coconut. Lots of spices in here! Over medium sweet and medium bodied. Almost full bodied with soft slick feel. A bit artificial but it definately works here.
