Hardywood Singel

Hardywood Singel

Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel’s stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

3.3 Bottle from Beer52 pack that I basically gifted myself. Nice golden pour, although the normal sized head instead of the wild pillowy ones I often get from Belgian beers gave the game away. I can see what they were doing here - take a singel and add a bit more of a citrus prickle - and it does the job well without being up there with the greats it's looking to emulate. I liked the clean, dry finish, and the moreish refreshment of the whole thing, but I definitely got the powdery thing others have mentioned. I reckon I would be rating this higher if I had been drinking it on a warm sunny day, to be honest.
2.6 Lockdown Sunday, April 2020, the day we walked along the shore. Little brown bottle from Beer52's America Pack. Hot frmented, yeasty pale ale with features in common with golden Belgian ales. Not as potent and smooth. A little sharp. Powdery bitterness, which increases. This is an American pale ale with some influences from Belgium. I prefer the Belgium made beers. This doesn't work for me. [2.6]

3.5 Bottle from Brewklopedia, Leicester. The bottle is a gusher! Light yellow and hazy with a sizeable white pillowy head. Butterscotch, clove, bready yeast in the aroma. Taste is bittersweet. It's sweeter at the beginning with the slightly astringent hop notes coming to the fore in the finish. More yeast and some toffee in the finish. Light body, soft carbonation. Nice one.

3.5 Bottle from GBBF 2018 and drunk at home. Clear gold colour lasting white head. Yes it has some light esters, light peach light banana, light bitterness on the finish. Light in the malts. It's not bad, but really just quite light for a 6% beer. But nice esters.

3.5 Bottle, golden pour with a thin haze and a fast-settling head. Spicy-funky nose carries through into a dry-sweet and fruity-malty body. Peppery bitterness, more funk and touches of golden stonefruit.
3.9 Bottle at home in Tysons VA. Huge fluffy active head, grainy malts, phenols, black pepper, farmhouse musty yeast on the nose. Bit of skunk. The mouthfeel is fluffy and carbonated, old fermented fruit flavors, grassy, clove and white pepper, finishes dry with dusty old noble hop qualities. Has a cellared quality, and very Trappist - like. This is good.

Spicy hop finish too, got better and better.
3.3 Solid stuff. Faithful rendition with a good bitter aniseed fruit bite late. Some thickness in the palate & indeed may overstate the 6.2%.
