3.4 Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 12/22/11, as Leviathan Trictus...H E-A JAR! Aroma: The nose has roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, spice, dark fruit, and a touch of booze Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a thin, fizzy, off-white head, and minimal lace Flavor: The taste is rather heavy malt (caramel, chocolate, and a little fruit) balanced by some spicey yeast Palate: The body is medium-full, its a little sticky, with a fizzy feel, and with a fair amount of boozy heat Overall Impression: This is a pretty interesting one. It is fairly heavily malted, but the spice and booze balance it out. It isn’t overly sweet at all. It also doesn’t haven’t much hop presence. It still seems to work though, and the booziness isn’t over-the-top enough to really detract from the overall drinkability much. I like what they did/tried to do here. A solid, interesting offering.
3.6 Raisiny aroma and taste, with a tart grapey sweetness. Obviously high in alcohol without the hot, solventy booziness.
3.8 On tap @ Judge’s Bench, Ellicott City MD-Labeled as Leviathan Triticus-Dark reddish brown pour with a/tan head. Sweet aroma. Flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt, raisens, & a touch of caramel. Had a lot of sweetness to it, but not sickly sweet. Very smooth & easy to drink, but alcohol was evedent. An after dinner sipper for sure.
3.1 Bottle. Very dark brown color with practically no head. A flimsy film tries to develop before vanishing away. Toffee and brown sugar aroma with some toasted caramel and notes of pine. The flavor is rich, sweet, and malty. Upfront there’s burnt sugar, sweet toffee, and toasted caramel. Mid palate this switches gears to a more fruity profile; red plum, baked apple, tangy cherry licorice, dates. The finish is a bit spicy and alcoholic. Perhaps a bit under carbonated but then again I’m not sure how old this bottle is. Not bad but unexciting.
3.3 Pour is an oily black with a small tan head, which quickly turns into a more lasting ring. Nose is of deep roasty malts, with some chocolatey notes along with dark fruit. Taste is more to the side of dark fruit, with some boozey notes present more than the smell would lead one to believe.
3.7 Growler from Mom, Dad, and the Grapejuice. Dark pour with a tan head. Aroma is licorice, molasses, and chocolate. Taste is lots of dark fruit, alcohol, more molasses, and chocolate.
3.6 Bottle from Sam’s in Durham. Pours very dark, almost black with ruby-amber edges and a thin beige head that turns into a ring around the edge. Nose is sweet at first and a bit off-putting. Eventually reveals vinous notes and dark fruits and berries. Some wheat, grain, tree bark, hop bitterness, and ash as well as some earthy notes, but mostly just sweet and tasty. Better after it breathes and warms a bit. Solid.
3.9 Pours black with a thin mocha head. Dark fruit, brown sugar, chocolate and caramel aroma. Dark roasted flavor up front and the end after a sweet roll of burnt sugar. Smooth finish concealing the alcohol all the way.
3.5 Dark, not much head (had it in a dark bar so tough to see color). Dense flavors of malt with dark fruit. Extremely easy to drink for a barley wine - hides the alcohol well.
3.8 Draft @ Vine & Barley. Pours dark reddish brown color with tan head. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel and alcohol. Sweet fruity flavor with caramel and some alcohol. Medium to full body with soft carbonation. Better than I was expecting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnuijDieOvY&feature=player_embedded#!
3.8 Bottle. Dark brown, clear, no head. Full body. Chocolate and malt aroma, strong beer. Smooth and rich but not overy heavy.
3.8 From the 12 fl. oz bottle marked 2011. Darn. I did not know it was Barleywine until after I opened it. I might have shelved it for a few months. Oh well. So I’m drinking this prior to decent maturity and I am getting an extra dark brown to black pour with little head. Vibrant aromas are noted right away of malts, light chocolate, and faded hops in the back. The body is around medium. The taste brings out more chocolate than in the aroma with that fresh Barleywine sour bitterness. Quite good now. It would probably be better at this time next year.
3.3 From tap at Sunset Grill. Pours dark brown to almost black with a small off-white to tan head. Aroma is roasted malty and light yeasty fruity. Fruity, spiced, caramelish and light yeasty flavoured. Bitter and spiced yeasty finish.
3.5 Dark as a stout with a thin tan colored head. Strong flavor of dried fruit, hops, and a bit of spice. Raisins, pepper, figs. Very hearty and strong, the alcohol is certainly felt in this one.
3.7 12oz bottle in a snifter. Pours deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma strong of wheat, a little chocolate and caramel, and some light but slightly citrusy/spicy hops. Flavor strong of the wheat, more than any beer I’ve tasted. Smooth texture, but could be thicker. A really unique beer.
4.0 2/10/2011 on tap @ Harpoon Brewery (2011-495) Clear deep purple beer, small aery beige to brown head, non stable, non adhesive. Aroma: rotten fruits, overripe strawberries, caramel, some mocha, banana peels. MF: ok carbon, full body, creamy texture. Taste: red fruits, alcohol, bit sweet, caramel, ripe cherries, ripe banana, more alcohol. Aftertaste: sour red berries, alcohol, sweet, bit tart in the finish. Very good stuff, just the alcohol is a bit too present. But then again, 11.5% is pretty hard to disguise!
2.2 draft... who’s idea was this, train wreck, then I actually read the description and it makes sense, way to go Bros, stick to what you’re good at, micromanaging the internet ... watery dark brown, not much of a head... the nose is really sweet, banana, wheat, a bit of barrel... tastes is super tough to, lots of barrel, super alcoholic and harsh, fail
3.6 Very dark brown, brown ring of head. Aroma is subtly fruity. Flavor is an intense and complex mixture of alcohol, dark fruits and chocolate, with a biting finish. Full bodied.
3.4 Good beer. Look great in a glass dark. Rich mouth feel without much aroma.
3.3 Pulled this bottle out of the cellar. Courtesy of Sir Drew. Served in a snifter. Pours a very dark ebony color that is nearly black. Really thin collar. Nose brings some roasted malt and chocolate plus a bit of light anise character. Flavor is slightly roasted with some very mild sweetness. Mouthfeel brings everything together with a good amount of sweetness plus some light cherry character on the backend. Much better as it warms, and fairly nice overall. I’d go for this again. Serving type: bottle
3.5 Brown pour wih a caramel malt and dried fruit aroma (Maybe raison) Flavor of caramel, plum, straw and hop. Not bad.
3.8 Bottle/12oz - Pours a dark brown in color with some ruby coloring if held to the light. Not much head and what there was was light tan in color. Low carbonation. Aroma is malty with plenty of dark fruits and some of the tartness characteristic of some wheat beers. Flavor is mostly of dark roasted malts and of dark fruit (prunes, dates and raisins). Although the description talks of the hops, I did not find too much influence form these in the beer. Palate is better than I expected. The alcohol is surprisingly well hidden, considering the ABV strength of the beer. As with the rest of the Leviathan series, I like this beer...
3.8 bottle of harpoon leviathon triticus...12ozer...pours dark brown, almost black with small beige head. aroma full of dark fruit, fig, and huge lactose malts (caramel, butterscotch, etc...), and some alcohol. flavor of spicy floral hops, alcohol, burnt malt, cocoa, and slight milkiness...hops certainly are addressed more in the flavor than in the aroma. very complex, and very good
3.8 8/4/2010 New beer picked up at Bert’s today shoved in the freezer and enjoyed by the air conditioner after dinner. Bottle says 11.5% abv. Pours a deep brown with mahogany highlights and a thinnish off white head that rapidly dissipates to a ring on top. Smells of sweet candy and dark fruits, burnt sugar, roasted grain and a touch of alcohol. Taste is sweet with fruits, raisins, cherries and plums come to mind. Molasses and dark sugar rolled in ethanol. Long lingering alcohol burn and hop bitterness in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body with a medium dry finish, light carbonation. The alcohol becomes more and more evident in both the aroma and the taste the longer I let this one sit. This beer could use some time to mellow out.
3.3 a dusty dark brown. Immediate strong aroma of old or caramelized banana. closer up and you detect a bit of bubble gum tang. Tasting lots of hop smashed head on with wheaty malt, clove, nutmeg, caramel, dark chocolate, cocoa. its all fighting each other though. flavor lasts forever. a little boozy. soft on the tongue and floats away. a little slime left over though. Interesting but overblown I think. so bitter and so sweet at the same time.
3.7 A - Pours a deep dark brown color with just a hint of red around the edged with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down to a thick ring around the glass leaving behind some lacing. S - Aroma is full of sweet elements, including some caramel, some dark fruit, and some brown sugar. Little bit of banana scents and some alcohol aroma are also present. T - Starts off with some dark chocolate and dark fruit flavors. Little bit of burnt malt in the background. Through the middle some coffee and caramel flavors come out. The finish is a blend of dark fruit sweetness, some booze, and some caramel that lingers nicely. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate-low carbonation. A bit syrupy and thick and very rich. The finish has a touch of alcohol that warms the mouth. D - Pretty drinkable, however, a bit more of a sipper. The flavors and big and strong and fairly complex. The richness of the fruit and caramel sugar flavors are really nicely balanced.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Deep purple brown with splotchy tan suds. Nose is sticky sweet black grapes and currants with a touch of wet wood. Medium light, hot and airy with a dull buzz. Taste is tart blackberry, brown sugar and orange zest. On the bitter fruity side for a barleywine but pretty good.
4.1 Appearance: browns and blacks – very dark for a barleywine. A thick pour reveals a minimal head bordered by a minimum bubbly collar. Swirls thicker along the edges; no lace. Nose: dark fruits dipped in fudge than air cooled. Figgy – fig newtons but richer and denser. Bready and cake in the back. Wisps of liquid smoke. Dried black cherries and raisins, natural and unsweetened. Caramelized brown sugars mingle with black strap and black root. Dense black breads. Palate: surprisingly tart and thinner than expected. Liquid smoke underneath and in the finish. Fudge and black cake. Figs and dates in the middle – meaty and earthy, garden fresh. Hint of tannins – leather, red grape skins, wood. Approaches simply and quickly grows more complex. Smoky, leathery, rooty, meaty, figgy, earthy. Bacon grease in the back end of swallow? Officially fantastic. Sweet along the sides, fudgy in the middle, smoky in the back, with everything else in-between working seamlessly. Final Thoughts: at first I was a little leery but as Triticus warmed up, she warmed my heart and won me over. Definitely a barleywine to be enjoyed at cellar temperatures so when you pour, be sure to take extra time to savor. Not groundbreaking per say, but definitely tastetastic.
3.8 This poured a dark red to medium brown color with an offw hite head. Aroma was of toffee, citrus hops, light chocolate, some yeasty wheat character and light alcohol too. Flavor was a bit sweet but not cloying, medium roast, some light dark fruits, decent hops bitterness, and some alcohol in the finish, not overbearing, but you you can tell its there. good Stuff and way better than most harpoon offerings.
