Harpoon Chocolate Stout

Harpoon Chocolate Stout

Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

Description

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

3.7 Very good stout. Easy to drink with the right amount of silky chocolate notes throughout. Dark black pour without much of a head. Easy drinking stout despite the 5.9.
3.4 Thin layers of light chocolate , very little coffee but there, Seems like a lite version of moo hoo Very lite that is, But pretty drinkable, Some bitter roasted chalkiness on the end
4.2 Pours a dark black with thin light brown head. Has a sweet chocolate aroma. Taste is very sweet with chocolate, sweet malts, and light coffee. Lingering chocolate aftertaste.
3.8 You get a good cocoa aroma once the bottle is open. This stout has a sweet dark chocolate and coffee flavor. A good dessert beer with brownies or chocolate cake. This really hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this.
3.0 The smell is chocolate and coffee, and the appearance is dark and wonderful. The taste is just too overwhelmingly chocolaty, slight coffee, and too unrefined. The mouth feel is slightly watery. I’ll definitely NOT be getting this stout again. And I had such high hopes.
3.8 Pretty good. Taste of dark chocolate with a hint of coffee...................
3.3 Bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Big chocolate aroma with vanilla and light coffee. Flavor of roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, notes of coffee and had a touch of vanilla with a dry roasty finish.
3.5 Transfer from BA review on 4-8-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color, bordering on black, with a two finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with a good deal of a milk chocolate smell. Adding to the darker aromas are some aromas of coffee. There are big aromas of a caramel, vanilla, and a cream smell there as well, which overall create a very sweet, milk chocolaty smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet milk chocolate and caramel flavor with a moderate amount of a roasted flavor. These flavors create a base for the brew remaining relatively constant throughout the taste with the caramel fading ever so slightly but being replaced by a little bit of vanilla sweetness. All while these transitions occur, so too do some more bitter coffee and earthy flavors come to the tongue. With the roast intensifying ever so slightly, and a bit of a grainy flavor coming to the tongue, one is left with a somewhat surprisingly drier, but still robustly darker chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. A bit of a thicker body and a lower carbonation level may have been slightly more fitting for the style, fitting the darker chocolate and more surprisingly drier roasted flavors of the brew more nicely. Overall – A decent chocolate brew that was surprisingly dry in light of its aroma. Nothing too exceptional, but a nice try and a decent choice (in light of its price) for a darker and more drinkable chocolate stout.
1.8 terrible terrible beer, Chocolate is overdone much in the manner a child would over-do the herseys syrup if allowed to mix it into milk themselves. Difficult to drink. Chocolate is balanced with vanilla in the way that drinking vanilla extract would balance bakers cocoa. AVOID.
3.6 "loads of creamy cocoa and chocolate, which is always nice, back and forth between real and artificial, but it’s done pretty well. kind of a small stout...this much chocolate would work very vrey well in an imperial, but still works well here. this beer disappeared faster than any in recent memory, so that says something right there. Thanks Lou...a chocolate treat. Quite nice for a mix-pack offering!"
3.2 A dark brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, very sweet milk chocolate with vanilla, Nestlé quick, nice if a bit cloying. In mouth, dry powdery chocolate malt with light mineral notes, grassy hops, OK. On tap at Best Western Plus Waterbury.
3.6 Bottle. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts and some hints of coffee. Taste is chocolate and coffee. Almost chocolate milk like with some carbonation. A bit thin but smooth. Decent sweet stout.
4.0 This beer pours dark brown nearly black and is nearly opaque. Only a little bit of light makes it through at the very edges of the glass. From the pour it produces a one inch beige collar of thick foam. The head hangs on well and makes some thin lacing on the glass. There are strong chocolate and dark roasted malty notes in the aroma. This is a strait forward medium to full bodied beer with a fairly thin texture for the style. It has a simple but very tasty rich dark chocolaty character with some sweetness from the malt as well as loads of roasted/toasted notes. I also get some bitter dark coffee notes that hook up with the light bitterness from the hops.
3.4 Bottle. Black with a quickly dissolving tan head. Chocolate, sundried date and sweetened cocoa butter aroma. Sweet, sugary but slightly dry. Medium body, well-carbonated and bitter, a little dry finish. Ok.
4.1 Bottle from Boston. Jet black pour, thick off-white head. Delicious aromas of dark chocolate nibs, espresso, sticky date pudding. Smooth as silk- loved the consistency. Rich and chocolatey till the finish, yet the finish wasn't treacly like some chocolate stouts. A real winner- will look for it again for sure.
3.1 Nice pour aroma is bakers chocolate. Sweet chocolate hits you slight bitterness. Milky kind of a one trick pony but chocolate stout is what you get. The chocolate notes in sam Adams and anchor beers have a lot more backbone to them. Kind of artificial. Still a decent drink glad I tried it but there’s a lot better stuff out there.
3.9 12oz bottle, dark pour, dark chocolate aroma, taste of chocolate malts, slight roasty flavor (I wish it was a little more roasty) but never the less, a good tasting stoudt. Thin feel for a stoudt, but again tasty.
3.6 Bottle to taster. Bottle says to enjoy by 03/15/14. Looks good; a mostly opaque dark brownish black with thin beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells and tastes of chocolate and mild roast. Solid on the palate. Enjoyable.
3.2 12 oz. bottle. Thanks, Joe! Pours black, with a big, bubbly, tan head that fizzles quickly, leaving no lacing. The aroma is immediate dark chocolate, vanilla, and a lot of earthiness. Very sweet, with just a little bitterness through the finish. Light to medium body, syrupy and thin. Overall, this is a relatively well-made beer, but lacks any sort of depth. Drinkable, but, meh...
3.4 Tap sample. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted sweet chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sweet chocolate flavor with a medium chocolate sweet finish of average duration.
3.1 6oz on tap at Keystone in Hyde Park. Big milk chocolate syrup flavor up front. Like the Hershey’s type. It’s a bit much for me... I prefer those super bitter dark chocolate flavors. There’s also something off in the aroma... Like a rootbeer type aroma. Dark brown color, clear around the edges. Little khaki head, couple dots of lace. Medium body. A little watery for the style. Just a very light hint of chewiness. Kind of reasonably smooth, lighter carbonation. Just a very light bit of sharp texture. And just a light hint of slickness. May be my palate, but tasting more dry overall now. Moderate sweet taste, good moderate bitter too though. I was expecting to get burnt out on sweetness here but it’s actually a decent balance taste-wise. Overall, a pretty decent chocolate stout. Was a little weird at first, but it grew on me and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected to.
3.6 Pours an opaque black on tap with creamy off-white head. Aroma is yes, chocolate with a slight roast. Taste follows, sweet and creamy. Very nicely done.
3.7 Key at the brewery. Pours a deep brown, very thin tan head that reduces to the edges. Heavy chocolate aroma, with some toffee, bubblegum and cream. Very chocolatey sweetness, very light roasted bitterness. Bit prickly for a stout, but a nice creamy chocolate aftertaste. Very tasty effort.
2.7 Not may favorite from Harpoon, there is a definite chocolate note to it, but I am not a big stout guy, so my opinion is biased.
2.7 I like chocolate stouts, this one is fairly tasty although somewhat light body. Creamy feel and a strong milk chocolate taste
3.9 Pour is so dark that it is almost black. Small dark tan head that disapates quickly. Aroma is bitter dark chocolate, malts and coffee. You can’t miss the chocolate in this one it is rich and delectable. You get just a touch of hops in the finsh a great beer.
3.9 Dark as night. Looks like black coffee. Very strong chocolate aroma. Tastes almost entirely like dark chocolate with toasted malt and hints of espresso and nut. Very strong alcohol (5.9 ABV). I love Stouts and this is a great example. If they dialed back the chocolate and the alcohol a tad, it would be close to perfect.
3.6 damn..one of the best aromas of any beer..extreme chocolate..really good pour..black with 2-3 finger tan head..but the taste..whoa..wayyyy too much chocolate...good..but just a little overdone.
3.3 Pours black with a thin tan head that quickly dissipates. Great milk chocolate aroma. The flavor doesn't quite live up to the aroma. Flavor of chocolate is definitely there with a bit of an alcohol/cough medicine flavor.
3.2 Bottle. Pours as one might expect, if perhaps just a bit thin. The predominate character is most definitely milk chocolate. Both in the milk chocolate aroma and the vaguely more alcohol-laden but still chocolatey character. Fun beer. (#5412, 1/8/2014)
