3.8 Bouteille. Une robe cuivrée avec une mousse blanche. Un nez agréable de toffee, caramel. Une bouche tendre avec du toffee avec un mordantde houblons modernes. Peu complexe mais fort agréable. La petite touche amère en fin de bouche est à sa place. J’aime.
4.1 Rich toffee, walnut, bread nose. Clear tea, headless. Toffee and dates, grape. Medium body, soft carbonation, alcohol not noticeable. Beautiful British malt character, lovely texture.
3.5 Pours a clear dirty gold with no head. Aroma is of candies, dark fruit and molasses. Taste is malt and a hint of dark fruit and molasses with a little booze hidden in the end. Pretty good overall.
3.2 Bottle from the brewery. A sweet & bitter taste combining to make a perfectly drinkable beer despite the high abv. Very flat and slightly characterless however.
3.1 275ml merci BeardedAvenger. - Introduces high-density dried fruits, candy and toffee to a boozy aroma profile reminiscent of Belgian tripel: bit sweet, apricot liqueur, Jaffy cakes, earthy dried orange. Within style, but with that malty density and at a mere 7,5% a definite sipper.
4.2 A- slowly forming head of foam after the pour, at its max less than an inch and that fades quickly. S- caramel malt, Port like nose, slight dark fruits. T- caramel malt with again, Port like flavour, some butterscotch, hints of dark fruits. M- medium to medium high body, no carbonation. O- very tasty brew with the alcohol well hidden. I dig it.
3.9 Reddish brown of color with a very weak off white head. An aroma of malt, molasse, sugar, prunes, chocolate and raisins. A flavor of port, sugar, candy, malty and no bitterness at all!
4.0 Shared 20 year old bottle from 1996! (Thanks Dan!) Clear deep red-brown body. Excellent sweet bitter balance. Rich and complex taste. Lasting malty flavor with hints of molasses, toffee, and vanilla. Very smooth!
3.6 Bottle thanks to James, 30/12/15. Clear golden orange with a decent beige swirl. Nose is rich fruit cake, candied fruit peel, brown sugar, caramel. Taste comprises fruit loaf, dates, prunes, caramel fudge, light spice. Full bodied fine carbonation, light warming booze in the close. Decent barley wine.
3.4 Bottled, 275ml aged 3.5yrs (8.2%ABV) from Harveys Brewery Bottle Shop, Lewes, E.Sussex. Orange amber with slight white head. This has the aroma and character of an old, dusty, well used leather armchair, quite earthy but fruity, apricot alcohol hits. A fairly basic beer for the type.
3.4 275ml bottle picked up at The Royal Oak a couple of months ago and drunk at home in Blaendulais, 7.5%. Undated but says its the 60th anniversary version. Dark orange, totally clear, still, small thin off-white head, light lacing. Aroma is Horlicks, toffee and spinach, maybe a touch oxidised. Body is medium, soft carbonation, quite smooth. Taste is toffee, cardboard, raisin. Papery dry and slightly oxidised. Not too sweet, a touch of spicy booze. Not amazing up front but opens up nicely over time.
3.6 The aroma has a strong fruit and malt character. Body is a strong mahogany red with just a slight head. Slick rich taste. Plum and malt taste.Sweet with a mild roasted malt for balance. Warming on the palate. Smooth finish. Low carbonation. Definitely one for enjoying slow and easy.
3.4 (Thx!) 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “2de Bierproeffestival van De Dijleschuimers”. Clear dark orange, little white. Nose is odd fish guts yeast, dull sugar (odd fermentation temperature?),… Taste is rather German like given oily nature, heavy fish guts, yeast notes, basic oily sugary sweetness, caramel, orange, tad marmalade,… Oily, slick fish guts body. Reminiscent of the “De Molen / Hair of the Dog Fred”, serious disappointment much like that beer, zero complexity, fish guts, mild esters, thinned oily base sweetness,… I was really hoping for more and as usual I question its historical accuracy.
3.2 Bottle. Clear amber with minimal carbonation or foam. Rich fruit and big malts in the aroma. There is considerable harshness and it is also bitter grapefruit. I wish that harshness were tempered. Fruit is nice and there is some heat. This is just ok, and with so much fermentable stuff it could have been better.
3.3 Aroma: intense caramel, bread malts, light citrus fruits, dark fruits, plums. Appearance: clear brown, small, creamy, off-white head. Taste: heavy sweet. Palate: sweets continue, remain very heavy, caramel, molasses, fruity, sticky texture, turns lightly bitter in finish. Overall: OK Barley Wine, lacks some complexity in both aroma and palate. Bottle from the brewery shop, Lewes.
3.3 Bottle. It poured a clear brown color with a beige head. The aroma was of malts, bread, fruits and a touch of alcohol. The taste was malty sweet and fruity. The aftertaste was a little bitter. Decent.
2.7 Bottle thanks to AshtonMcCobb.Pours copper orange. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, cardboard. Not pleasant at all. Taste is very sweet, something similar to aroma meaning not good. Marmalade, tangy. Not good at all.
3.0 Bottle from Harvey’s online shop. Appearance - orange with a thin head. Nose - initial hit of bird droppings and cardboard. Eventually some orange comes through. Taste - total marmalade. Palate - medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long tangy finish. Overall - the nose is awful. The rest is a lot better.
2.6 Bottle shared with Ashton McCobb and nihtila. Pours clear amber gold, thin white head. Aromas of dung, hamster cage. Taste is sweet, orange, marmalade. Sweet finish. Taste better than it smells.
3.3 Bottle at Craig’s, bbe 2006. Nose is dates and raisins, taste is almost like flat oxidised sherry, very sweet.
3.5 amber-gold honey color with no head. Aroma is a sweet neutral and mellow honey and touch of sap and grass. Body is medium, oily-watery-syrupy, light carbonation, medium-fine, with little prickle burn. Flavor is a light herbal hay couples with a nectar honey-caramel fusion. Delicious and addicting flavor. Lack of head is a big detractor. Body is lacking in carbonation too, although some is present. Overall, the good flavor makes up for it.
3.7 Pours a slightly mahogany umber color with a finger of eggshell foam. Lots of burnt honey, creamy toffee, bitter walnut, cocoa powder and some lingering earthy black tea. Seems a bit young but nice mouthfeel and booze to sweetness ratio is nicely integrated.
3.8 Bottle - pours a dark chocolate black with little head. Mixed aromas of fruits (plums), malts and caramel. Taste of sweet malts balanced by fruity hops. Nice balance to this.
3.2 Very special piwo shared with McTapps. This one offers plums and some other sour fruits with some lactose in the back. Carbo is medium, alcohol definitely tasteable and beside being sick and heavy those fruity moments make this one special. Though, the drinkability is limited therefore I was not that convinced.
3.6 Bottle from the MIddle Center Cider Farm in Lewes-Firle. Pours out in a deep dark brown colour with low head and smooth body. Aroma of plums, prunes and barley. Taste of prunes, grapes, dried fruits, roasted barley, torf, leaves and light chocolate. Light dusty hints. Nice to drink, smooth to finish. Enjoyed it.
3.8 275 ml bottle from Wilbur’s. Appearance: finger khaki head, that does not last, no lacing, amber brown color, clear, Aroma: prune, port, molasses, medium full body, light carbonation, oily and alcoholic, thin. Taste: sweet prune fruit, into fuller maltiness and oats, light alcohol and prune fruit finish. Overall, super awesome! love the body, love the aroma and taste. Great balance.
3.7 Bottle form Harveys brewery shop, Lewes, East Sussex. A dark golden/amber coloured pour with virtually no head to speak of. Sweet, fruity, caramel aroma. Tastes quite sweet, fruity, caramel, rich, slightly musty and boozy. Been meaning to try this one for years. A nice old English barley wine.
4.4 Pours the a deep beautiful red hue with a small but well retained head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is very malty, it’s got a bit of marmalade, red apple, & cherry cordial. It’s lightly sweet smelling. The flavor is really something all the toffee and caramel you could wish for but with a sense of restraint on the sugary sweetness. It’s got raisins, plums, and dark fruit galore. The alcohol provides a zippy sting and a touch of warmth to the flavor. It’s lightly earthy, nutty, & pleasantly bitter.... with light notes of cavendish tobacco, & cherry liqueur. This practically defines what I like about the flavor of barleywine, it’s complex and it’s sweet but there is a place for everything and everything is in it’s proper place. The beer coats the mouth but the alcohol provides just enough of a sharpness that it’s never quite syrupy. I never expected to enjoy this beer this much, what a beautiful interpretation of the style, I really must buy more of this.
3.1 @Sergio’s/Louisville Cloudy dark mahogany, only a rim head, cobwebs of lace show as I drink it. Taste is sweet caramel malt with toffee and mild prunes. The drink is lacking in carbonation, which is a little off-putting, but it makes up for it with alcohol warmth in the semi-sweet finish, almost as if this is a caramel schnapps. Hard to assess since it doesn’t fall into any recognizable style (I’ve had several barley wines, of which this isn’t) but it is easy to sip, and actually satisfying.
--> Tolles Bier!! 12,14,12,13,12,14 - 13,25
