3.6Thanks to Suttree for sharing this at the Knoxville tasting. Pours black/deep brown with a tan head. Aroma of coffee and dark chocolate. Medium mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Initial flavor is sweet, with notes of sweet red wine and coffee, countered by a tame bitterness. Finish may be a tad cloying. But not bad overall. Sad to see a good beer go.
3.9Not sure how old this one was, but it seemed to be holding up pretty well. Redish black, decent sized tan head. Pleasent winey, chocolatey aroma, perhaps a hint of oak, too. Flavor is a mix of coffee, chocolate and wine. Not bad at all.
3.8Had this one in a closet for sometime, was shocked to see they went out of business. Deep dark with a tan head. Nose of toasted chocolate and coffee. Flavor much the same, big roast malt, with good texture. Finish leaves a sweet roast to the palate.
3.622 0z Bottle via Tar (thanks). Pours black with an average tan head. As far as aroma i detect mint, anise, chocolate. The taste starts out very chocolaty and ends minty and in between there is some vanilla and honey. There are some floral and earthy hops in the aftertaste. Perhaps a tiny bit of oak underheath it all. The one thing that this beer is lacking is roastiness and body. Thin/mdium body, low/medium carbonation. Pretty good, but with a little tweaking it could be great!!
3.9Appears black with dark brown edges when held up to the light. A tan head slowly fades out. Speckled lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of creamy molasses, cocoa, & coffee.
Taste is of the mentioned aroma with a nice mix coming through.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, sugary, with bitter cocoa powder lingering at the end.
4.3Much thanks to boboski for cracking open this one. Stark black in color with modest light tan head. Mad cocoa and chocolate on the nose, with a bit of hops accenting everything else. Palate was a medium-to-thick velvet goodness. Distinct hop and cocoa bite begins the taste, which smoothes out into a roasty finish. Elegant.
4.2Poursa pitch black with a tan head, very light. Supposedly 18 months old and it kind of smelled its age. Almost a mustiness that goes with the roasted malts, coffee, and light chocolate. It was very intriguing. Very nice taste as well. A lot of caramel, coffee, roasted nuts, and malts. Pretty mellow, nothing jumps out at you, but has aged pretty nicely. this one was good.
4.1Bottle thanks to Dubbercody, thanks again Jaime! Black pour with a small light tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts and a bit of coffee. The flavor was made up of coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. Full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel...roasty throughout with a bitter/clean/roasty finish.
3.8Bottle shared by nolankowal: Black pour with a dark tan head. Aroma, molassas, chocolate, coffee, and brown sugar. Flavor, chocolate and coffee, nice and smooth. Medium bodied, some bitterness on the finish.
3.7Yeah, I was hanging out with the guys in the three previous ratings. Good times! It just takes me a little longer to transcribe. Yeah, 22oz bottle. Dark and almost opaque. A slight shade lighter that pitch. Reddish tint. Large spotted off-tan head. Syrupy, woody malty cocoa, coffee in the nose. Good nose! Smooth with little effervescence. Oily and slick. Still woody and bitter. Sweet chocolate. Mostly malty with a good coffee kick. Caramel and candy sweet. But still the bitter hits the palate in many ways. Maybe a little light. Touch of a grapey fruitiness. Still a fine brew!
3.722oz bomber shared with vyvvy, thegreenrooster and snegrams3. pours 95% black with a fizzy tan head around the rim of the glass. tan tinge around the grim of the glass. nose of musty chocolate, dark fruits, rasins, char and light smoke. alcohol and chocolate dominate the flavor here and a note of burnt banana as well. alcohol is present but not overbearing. carbonatione is a little lite for what i like in an IS. nice char and roast finish. pretty good!
3.4Pour is a black with no head. Aroma is a bit toffee, chocolate and a helping of alcohol. Flavor is super dark chocolate with with a touch of coffee and caramel. Alcohol is definatly present in the flavor as well. A tasty but powerfull brew.
3.5Finished off with sneagrams3, thegreenrooster & Beerdrenched - big thanks to Beerdrenched for supplying yet another elusive libation. Pours oil black with about the same amount of head as oil itself - almost none. Aroma has dark chocolate, dark fruits with emphasis on raisins, charred roasted malts and some alcohol presence. Medium / full body that is slick with very little carbonation. Taste starts with bitter chocolate, dark fruits and a slight alcohol burn. The finish has heavy char, coffee and bits of oakiness. Move alcolhol comes out further down the glass. A good beer, but not up to normal imperial stout standards.
3.922oz bottle via trade with SpringsLicker! - Pours black with a very short tan head that faded quickly to a ring and laced a little on the snifter from there... Aromas of coffee, chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, and some caramel, also good roasted malt character there too. Not much carbonation and full body.. Chewy palate. Long lingering chocoff finish... Not bad at all.
4.6I tried this beer for the first time after having other beers and this taste jsut took over. It’s of course a thicker stout but super smooth. If I could have 10 in one night I would but I would passout after 5 and wakeup wanting more. You will not be disappointed.
4.5Much thanks to cmaruschak for sharing a bottle. Pours pitch black with a thick and fluffy beige head that lasts awhile. Good lacing too. Rich mocha aroma, full of coffee and chocolate. Full-bodied and well-balanced with a roasty character. Big coffee and chocolate flavor with nut and caramel tones. Alcohol is well-masked but perceptible. The finish is flavorful with more chocolate and dark fruit. Excellent beer!
3.9Pours a dark brown almost black color with a nice brown head. Aroma is very strong with huge maltiness and choco. Flavors is much the same as is most imperial stouts. A great brew indeed.
4.0The final beer of my tasting / drunken weekend. Actually, this was not the final beer, the final was Weyerbacher 11, but I have already had that, so as for ratings, this was it. Bottle from Chris (chriso420) Thanks dude! This is a beer that I have wanted to try for several years, since joining ratebeer. I read reviews from Brian (murphy) praising this beer, and really began to seek it out only when I heard the brewery was closing, plus the selection here had increased 10 fold. Pours out a dark brown, almost black color. Smell is chocolate, cofee, roasted malts. Taste is about the same, very interesting, but kind of thin. Something I could work with certainly. A pleaser for a night cap, and I really good beer that lives up to its score. No this is not a top 50 beer, but it does not try to be. This is a solid, great stout, and really shows off what an imperial stout is all about. Very nice, rich, and creamy. Thanks Chris for a chance to try this rare (becoming more rare) treat.
3.9Poured a very dark ruby color that leaves tan legs on the glass. Thin white head. The aroma had coffee and alcohol on top with a dark chocolate base. The was a big mix of chocolate and coffee in the flavor. Like a mocha latte (or whatever those are called). Plenty of roasted malt in here. A mild tartness most likely from the roast. Medium to full bodied.
4.2Sampled at RBSG 2006- Grand Tasting. Pours a rich dark brown with a light brown head. Very rich and pleasant mocha aroma. The flavor is a heavy chocolate milk with a bit of sourness. Very thick body. The beer heavily coats the glass. Very delicious.
3.7RBSG 06. Overcarbonated, dark brown body with hugh tan head. The aroma is chocolate, molasses and raisins. The flavor is chocolate, burnt, roast and coffee. Medium body with fine carbonation.
4.7Pours a two finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Black color. Medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Molasses nose. Starts sweet, rich molasses flavor, smooth, hints of alcohol at finish. Great beer, this is how I like an imperial stout. $4.75 for a 22oz bottle from John’s Market Tigard, Or.
4.4I like this beer. I like the generic label and the fact that they put more money into their product instead of packaging. A very good beer with 3 distinct flavors I deciphered. Coffee, Toffee, and Malt dominate the taste. The palate is smooth like silk yet somewhat heavy and chewy. The smell is wonderfull. Dark fruits galore with all the usuall scents that are associated with dark beer present. One of the better Oregon Imperial Stouts.
3.9RBSG 2006, Grand Tasting. I bought this in Portland in August of 2005, kept it at celler temp for a year and it was a gusher, yet didn’t taste infected. Black with a light beige head. Roastiness, chocolate and an alcohol zing in the nose. Flavor has notes of chocolate, roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, big hops and pleasant malty sweetness. Very full, round and creamy with moderate carbonation. Very good.
3.7Bottle at RBSG 2006. Dark brown to black body. Nose is varying on lactic tartness with roasty malts and chocolate. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, light lactic sourness, and essentially sweet-sour in spots. Body is medium with a creamy feel to it. Finishes with more big chocolate notes, roasted malts, and a hint fo the lactic sourness.
3.9Sampled at RBSG06. Dark black color with a thin brown head. Roasted malt aroma. Sweet roasted malt and chocolate flavor.
4.1Beer #15 RBSG 06. I’ve been wanting to try this for years. Deep black, brown peeking through at edges. Chocolate aroma, straightforward but inviting. Deep, full chocolate flavor. I found this to be superb, although perhaps a bit one-dimensional. I just didn’t pick up the subtleties other raters did. But I very much enjoyed it. Should point out that the utterly smooth body totally hid the alcohol.
4.0Huge thanks to SpringsLicker for generously giving me this bottle. Deep burgundy brown body and minimal cream-colored head. Lush chocolate, caramel, and toffee nose and flavor plus pleasant levels of roast. Light raisiny aspect. Silky texture. A belly-warming, elegant and very enjoyable imperial stout.
4.3Bottle from wohlfs. Pitch black with 1 finger beige head. Aroma is all chocolate up front, with hints licorice, dark roasted grain, pine resin and alcohol. Flavor again is a huge chocolate kick up front, lots of residuel sweetness through the middle, very faint coffee. Alcohol and warming affect get even bigger in the finish. Creamy smooth body is a tad thin at times. Tad less alcohol and little better body and my 4.3 is a 4.6. Well done regardless.
3.6Pours black with a 3" dome topped brown head. One of those rare heads that extends far beyond the rim of the glass and remains solid. Big chocolate aroma with dark caramel, vanilla and alcohol. Sweet and vinous in flavor with cocoa, some cola and burnt notes. Bit of an alcohol burn in the finish. Lighter in body than expected.
