3.4Bottle pour brownish copper with moderate ecru head. Nose toffee, dank, molasses, sweeter malt. Taste moderate bitter bite up front then bready malt, dank, toffee. Mid palate moderate sweet. Late palate peppery rye then long bitter finish.
3.7Deep , amber color . Big off-white head. Malt dominates in aroma with pine ,and some spices on background. Hops dominate in taste with malt on background. Strong , hoppy bitterness in aftertaste.
3.9Bottle pour into pint glass from Globe Drug. Aroma is strong caramel with alcohol--similar to barleywine. Appearance is hazy orange-brown with off-white head, nice sparkle and trace lacing. Taste is strong caramel with alcohol. Palate is medium bodied with slippery texture, soft carbonation and pleasant warm feeling in the stomach and sweet fruity/floral alcohol finish. Bitterness is experienced in the back of the mouth/teeth rather than aroma/taste. Overall, I might doubt my rating a little since this is likely a little old (is there any other kind from Globe Drug?) but the consistency with other ratings tells me this is more on than off. A nice sipping beer--strong with copious caramel maltiness and the alcohol comes through, but in a nice way. But, with the balance toward the malty side rather than hoppy, this suggests to me that it was a bit old.
3.8This smells and tastes more like a barleywine than a Double IPA, which others have noted. From bottle, dark amber pour with a medium off white head. Aroma of spicy rye, pine, caramel, toffee, resin, and grapefruit. Potent sweet caramel and toffee are balanced by herbal and resinous hops, boozy and strong, fruity flavors. Medium body, oily texture, light carbonation. Easy to drink for 10% abv. Well done, a unique strong ale, would repeat.
3.9Dark amber with a little haze and a medium beige head. Aroma of pine and sweet caramel malt. Aptly named, sweet flavor with a nice hoppy finish.
3.9Dark, clear amber pour, off white head. Spicy, pepper fragrance. Very smooth and drinkable.
This one kinda jumped into my cart. Excellent brew!
3.5Bottle. Pours dark amber with a short off-white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, rye and citrus. Flavor of caramel, rye, pine, grain, fruit and light toffee.
3.5355ml bottle. Amber pour. Sweet and boozy nose like a barleywine, some rye and light smoke. Falvor is sweet and malty, has a lot of fruit flavors, some grand mariner, a decent bitterness. I would consider this a rye barleywine, this brewery really needs to work on their aormas though, their beers smell bad then end up tasting better than expected.
3.9Beautiful dark amber with minimal beige head. Strong fruity aroma, rye malts. Taste adds more fruit, caramel and more bitterness for the hoppy finish. Very good.
3.712 oz single bottle from Molly’s Spirits into a stemless wine glass. Reddish amber and clear appearance with a small, lingering beige head, light patchy lacing and active carbonation. Aroma of light resinous hops, pine, earth, caramel, toffee, bread, light rye spice, toasted grain and a touch of cinnamon. Similar flavor, the medium hop bitterness is balanced well by moderately sweet malts and light to mild rye spiciness. Medium to full body with a pleasant mouth experience and a light dry, lasting bitter finish. All in all, it works pretty well. It has good aromatics, a pretty clean flavor and a nice mouth feel. It also hides the alcohol well and is pretty fun to sip on. Nicely done. Pairing: Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Bittersweet
3.4Strong rue backbone with a lot of malt and hopps for the finish. Smells like rye and grass. Bitter dry finish. Pours red with a thin tan head. Had out of a bottle at home.
3.3Smell of rye bread. Deep amber colour, yellow head. Extremely bittet. Aroma of rye bread, hops. Oily texture, flat carbon. Heavy body.
3.512 oz bottle. (Davy Jones Liquor Locker) Venice, CA.
Clear amber colour with a mid-size foamy light sand head.
Dark hops, strong bitterness and sweet maltiness in the aroma. Very malty and hoppy aroma. The hops are not necessarily that fresh.
The flavour is herbal and resiny hops, strong bitterness, very strong sweet maltiness and some spices. Strong.
3.912 oz pour, copper hue with creamy tan head, minimal lacing, overly sweet caramel malt smell with a bit of grapefruit, syrupy texture a bit sweet but maybe a pickled finish, overall more of a barley wine than an IPA but different and exemplary of the brewer
4.012 ounce bottle, no bottling date that I could find. Served in a DFH IPA glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy dark amber color with a couple inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both pretty good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like caramel malt, spicy rye, peppery spice, and pine and citrusy hops. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s the addition of some tropical fruitiness, earthiness and oranges. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s coating and is well carbonated. The 10% ABV is well hidden, it sure doesn’t drink like a beer that is that strong. One of my buddies gave me a bottle of this recently, and I’m glad he did! I wouldn’t mind trying this again, definitely worth picking up!
3.9Clear deep reddish mahogany with an ample tan head. Spruce, caramel, hint of vanilla, bread. Quite strongly bitter, big malt sweetness. Chewy, oily, medium body, longer finish. Quite good.
3.0Sample @ EBF.
Appearance: Bright golden-orange with a medium off-white head and good lacing.
Aroma: Burst of eucalyptus with caramel, peppermint and booze.
Taste: Moderate sweet. A lot of eucalyptus and peppermint with an heavy caramel malt presence, boozy notes and moderate bitterness. A bit more "balanced" than the aroma, but still cloying.
Palate: Medium to full body. Moderate to medium carbonation. A tad creamy. Sticky eucalyptus finish. Warming, borderline burning finish.
Overall: We aren’t in the "easily drinkable" category. A flavorful, but boozy and cloying DIPA. Way too much eucalyptus.
4.012 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass..dark orange with a fluffy off-white head..aroma of pine,resin,spices..sticky,chewy,spicy,hoppy..really good rye DIPA.
2.5Sample at EBF. Clear deep copper pour with lacy off white head. Aroma is dominated by caramel, eucalyptus, menthol, leafy hop, light medicinal notes, boozy, lots of raisins. Taste is bitter, lots of caramel, tons of menthol, leafy bitter hop, booze, raisins. Palate is full bodied, cloying and sticky, med carbonation.
3.8Attractive crystal clear copper with half inch of lasting foam. Aroma is hop heavy, leaning towards the resin/tropical fruit end of the spectrum. Also a pungent spiciness (presumably the rye). Taste has a big grainy kick at the start, and the there’s definitely rye. Pumpernickel beer. Bitter and sweet in balance. Chewy and boozy, alcohol is really pushing into barleywine territory.
3.7Bottle->snifter. Deep copper/amber with small offwhite head. A: bittersweet rye, malt, grains. T: same, with thick rye malt. Good.
3.6Bottle at home while visiting Jacksonville. Pours amber with an off white head. Big sweet bread, toffee, funky fruit lightly nutty aroma. Medium body, medium carbonation. Sweet ripe trop fruit, toast, marmalade, some pine, candy and a lightly bitter nutty light grapefruit finish. A touch too sweet and sticky but tasty.
3.8Clear copper with tan head. Boozy, grassy, some tropical aroma too. Lots of bitterness up front, grassy rye malt sweetness. Concentrated mango peach and pine in the finish. Enjoyable but not at all sessionable. This has to be the only drink of the evening (ok, maybe two).
3.7Copper color, not much head nor much aroma. Great blend of hops and malt though. Some bitterness, then malty sweetness with a finish that is not bitter and doesnt linger.
4.0Pours very hazy dark chestnut with a tightly foamed off-white head that sticks at a thick coating. Aroma is caramel malts, grains, some citrus. Taste is very, very sharp, dry and a bit cloying in the palate. Very rich and flavorful beer! A touch sweet to start and then boom! strong rye and bitter pine and grapefruit hop flavors roll along caramel malt backbone. Leaves you with a balance of bitterness and malt. Memorable for sure!
4.0Enjoyable and drinkable Rye IPA. Decent aroma and pours a nice clear amber. Nice rye malt balanced well with the hops. Not overly boozy. Medium body, crisp, with a decent amount of bitterness and not overly carbonated. I’ll enjoy the four pack.
3.3Decently balanced though I would’ve liked more spiciness from the supposed rye content.
4.3Into a chilled mug, pours dark copper, with a small head. Nice lacing left on the mug. Unassuming aroma of pine, malts, citrus, alcohol...but taste is BIG, BOLD, and sweet at the front, with a beautiful dry, bitter, rye-hop romp amongst the pines twinge! The finish is bitter and superb. This is bold stuff, artfully blending the high alcohol content within the complexity of flavors - and pulling it all off with great balance. A considerable feat for such a high alcohol content, blurring the boundaries between double IPAs and Barley wines. An interesting, well done, and memorable brew.
3.2From a bottle; pours a clear copper with a thin off white head; aroma is caramel and rye; taste is caramel with yeast, citrus and a touch of pine; finish is mostly dry with a strong alcohol finish.
3.6bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear dark amber with a beige head cover, hanging curtains of lace. Strong aroma of malt and alcohol. Taste is full-bodied malt that adds hops and alcohol on the swallow, all moving smoothly to a finish that is heavy on the alcohol side. A big, bold brew, but almost outside the range of beer.
