4.1 Bottle at 16 Tons Taphouse, part of WBBF. Pours a dark brown, aroma is lacto with dried dark fruit. Body is rich and dense, finish spicy, then fruity, then boozy bourbon sweetness, raisins. Really lovely, another successful blended beer from Shmaltz.
4.5 Can beers get more complicated than this? The Hebrewers are constantly trying to push that envelope... Still, it paid off. A nice blend that manages to present most of the best characteristics of its many ingredients, inc. the funkiness and rye in particular.
3.7 Poured from a 22, very dark light head and lacing. Very boozy, strong bourbon nose and front. Light rye after taste overall a good aged beetr, I let age for a couple exrta months. Very strong!
3.5 Bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber with medium frothy beige head that last diminishes quickly. The aroma is toffee, caramel, and a faint funk. Medium mouthfeel with a dark fruit flavor and chocolate with nice light funk in the finish. Easy to drink, hiding the alcohol well, a very good American strong ale from Hebrew.
3.3 Bottle. Bery dark maroon color, brown head, decent retention. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate milk, coffee, rum. Taste has sweet candied figs, raisins, dates, blackcurrant jam. Very sweet stuff.
3.6 Pours dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma of wood barrels and whiskey, Complex mix of flavors, malts, and aged whiskey. Sweet and fairly smooth, I like this blended ale. Thumbs up.
3.5 Bottle. Pours brown with thin tan head. Aroma of oak, brandy, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, and dark fruits. Taste of caramel, toffee, chocolate and molasses. Tons of flavors going on with this. Sticky finish.
3.4 22oz. bottling date 3/6/12. Here we go, whiskey barrel-aged trainwreck... Aroma of sweet, dark malts and dried fruit, woody, boozy and earthy with notes of bourbon, pine, red grape, cherry, dark sugars, chocolate and alcohol. Dark red-black in color with a lasting, very fine, khaki head. Flavor profile is hugely malty, sweet, fruity and moderately bitter, with more red grape and dark, berryish, tart fruits, dark brown sugar, vanilla, tobacco, semi-sweet chocolate, whiskey, and oak. Mouthfeel is warming and low in effervescence, smooth and lightly coating, body is of course full. Mmm, trainwreck-y.
3.4 Bomber poured clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of carmel, toffee, raisin, plum, brandy, brown sugar, light bourbon and light oak. Palkate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, toffee, molasses, bourbon, plum, raisin and a hint of spice with a smooth lingering dark fruit finish.
3.9 really wanted to try this .. . pours a deep brown .. . raisin, tar, sweet tar, and sour tar .. . nice funk level .. . quite enjoyable and definitely different .. . . for what? measuring his turds in class??
3.5 bottle - This one’s a dark amber brew with an aroma of dark fruit accented malt. The flavor is very sweet and it’s almost sticky. There’s some bourbon noticeable but the thick, rich malts are the dominant characteristic. It’s a good brew, but blending so many beers, some of which are already beers with a very high number of different malts and hops, makes this one maybe a bit on the messy side. Good, not great.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into snifter; Batch 1, bottled on 3/6/2012. Pours nearly pitch black; hazy very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, fig, date, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, vanilla, oak, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity, malty, and barrel notes. Taste of raisin, fig, date, prune, molasses, toast, toffee, caramel, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, light herbal spiciness, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice flavor complexity and balance of fruity, malty, and barrel notes; barrel strength is just enough without being overpowering; with some slight cloying sweetness present after the finish, but not bad at all. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very slick, creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barrel blended strong ale! Great balance and complexity of fruit, malt, and barrel flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
3.4 Dark amber pour with an off-white head. Nice aroma of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, and dark fruits. The funkiness adds some leathery notes and a slight dryness. Nice sweetness up front on the palate. Caramel, chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla. Lots of wood, light Brett, and a drying leather note. Plenty of dark fruit, particularly raisins.
3.1 Pours deep brown with the thinnest of white heads. Aroma is dark malt, raisins, vanilla and wood. Flavor is very heavy malt with hints of wood. A bit sweet for my taste.
3.7 On tap at Global Brew. Pours a dark opaque brown with a minimal light tan head. Aroma is earthy, fruity and grassy. Taste is sour, tart, dried dark fruit and the sweet caramel malt in the background trying to assert it self with the dominant sour. Also, and maybe this is the funky, there is a Belgian wild yeast funk to it as well, but that is good!
4.3 A thin tan head on a black body. The aroma is wood, molasses, alcohol and chocolate. Well, the taste is outstanding. It’s amazing that this is a blend of six barrel aged ales and that it tastes this good. Where to begin? There are bits of every one of the six beers in this one beer and they all play together nicely. The texture is smooth with low carbonation. Try it.
3.6 Sample pour of deep dark murky black with healthy khaki head. Nose is boozy, sweet and dark malt. Flavor is boozy also with healthy sweetness and some sweet fruits. Maybe raspberries... Little too sweet for me.. Lighter medium body with little to no lacing.
3.8 Aroma is beautiful. Whiskey, barrel, vanilla, peanut brittle, toffee, and caramel. Black with small tan head slight lacing. Taste is bourbon, molasses, cherry wood, Very Sweet. Sticky and full bodied. A bit sweet for me, but good.
3.9 Clear black with a thin beige head. Funny bretty nose with lactic acid, dark sweet maltiness, raisins, and rain. Flavor is fruity and funky, with some cherry and figs and oak and Brett yeast and molasses and toffee.
0.7 Obviously not my cup o... beer. Funky indeed, to me tastes like sourdough bread mash made with wine. Poured it down the drain
3.1 ~Strong sweet alcohol aroma with acidic sour cherry notes. Bourbon and woody vanilla ~Pours brownish black with small bubbly brownish head. ~Sour and sweetness in flavor with oak, molasses and caramel. ~Full bodied, with med low CO2, Linger sweet sour stickiness in finish. ~Syrupy and sweet on this one. Really not all that peasant to drink. Taste like an english barleywine that became soured.
3.9 Dark pour. Brown head. Surprising amount of carbonation. Smell is sweet. Molasses vanilla whiskey. First sip has to be chewed. Raspberries and figs enter the mix. Damn different and damn good
3.7 pours a dark mahogany with a small brown head, and really good lacing. smell is of bourbon, wood, dark fruits, malt, some toffee, and cherry. taste is of wild yeast, dark fruits, cocoa, whiskey, wood, red wine, and some hops. ends smooth, a little sweet, and a little sour.
2.6 Hebrew needs to take a blending lesson from Firestone walker. This beer is just sloppy and sweet. Way to much going on. The only thing I can say is it lives up to the "funk" in it’s name and not really in a good way. Drain poor.
3.6 Dark brown/black color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, dark fruit, & some vanilla; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, some oak, caramel, molasses, dark fruit, and chocolate; Finish is slightly tart/sour; Nicely balanced; Overall, very interesting & enjoyable.
2.8 Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, caramel, coconut, vanilla, and a touch of mint. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights and a small tan head. The flavor starts with chocolate, molasses, and caramel. The finish has fruit, raisin, and oxidation. It?s full bodied with mild carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, the oxidation is a bit rough.
3.9 Lots of bourbon. Lots of fruit. Lots of malt. Lots of alcohol. Lots of everything. There is a lot going on with this beer. Very complex.
4.0 Bomber from Windmill Farm. Deep black/ruby on the pour. Woody whiskey nose with a bit of roast. Sweet booze and wood with a bit of a vanilla character. Some roastiness and dark fruit. Fairly sweet with a strong barrel component. Not very hopped. Very interesting blend.
3.7 Wonderful aroma of nuts, cashews, almost a hint of sour aroma? Complex mouth around, get the roasted nuts and malts. Still some residual sourness?
3.9 On tap. Black with a foamy tan head. Earthy roasted grain, rye whiskey, and red wine barrel like funky aroma. Bright lively palate. Sugary sweet whiskey, wine barrel sourness, lemon, brown sugar, and a vanilla, oaky, sugary, yet dry finish. A bit too sweet.
