3.6Appearance: deep wooden mahoganies with burnt garnet edges. Tan head lingers as a collar with a decent tannish film in-between. Swirls with lace and thick edges.
Nose: smoky. Black root and dark fruits – figs and dates. Tar. Black taffy. Some red apple skins bob in and out along with plum skins, purple and ripe, with the flesh a sweet afterthought. Root beer syrup, all natural please. Heavy and dense. Interesting essence of fall foliage and the changing of seasons whilst standing amidst an apple orchard.
Palate: earthy dirty twiggy presence which reveals a tart grape and plum skin twang. Earthy spiciness lingers atop middle of tongue. Unsweetened prune juice tartness. Black root and black licorice under and in back of swallow. Mild up front, then meaty and chewy with a faint whisper of juniper in the breath. Grows leathery and tannic as it warms up. Lingering burnt black strap finish. Chocolate bark?
Final Thoughts: so far of the two Jewbelation brews I have tasted, both have proven to be a unique exploration of flavors unexpected and enjoyed. Big and chewy. Who needs food when one needs beer. May I have another please.
3.5Poured out what is probably a dark brown but my living room light gives me a deep ruby red. The head is a bit thick and a light brown than the 8th anny beer I just had. There is a lot of lacing left over. Having a hard time with the aroma here as it is very faint which is quite surprising and very disappointing. A side note is that I’m used to these ASA’s being less malty but I’m fine with that. Touch of alcohol, something a bit unpleasant, sugar, something pungent, maybe orange pungency - when getting to warm?, touch of molasses, some floral nots. The malts are gaining hold but it’s taken too long and that annoys me. As the aroma evolves the malts get more than a foot in the door and come out quite a bit thicker and a bit of meaty nut... uh..... Good thing the Oilers game is on or I would have lost patience a long time ago. The taste is pretty good but the rich malts and whatever hops are tossed in here don’t work well on the beginning of the taste but much better on the finish. FUCKING OILERS - WILL YOU JUST FIGHT SOMEONE YOU GOD DAMN PUSSIES??????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA So angry. Good malts but yea, I guess this is what it should be. Notable hops get dulled by the solid malts, There is some sharp citrus and some figs. Good beer yet I was totally bored. Don’t think this was the night for this as I think.
3.5Poured a nice black color. Beer has a nice malt backbone. A lot of these HeBrew anniversary beers taste very similar to me.
3.512oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, hops, slight fruit, slight chocolate, and a hint of toasting. Poured dark brown/ruby in color with a small, creamy, loose, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Very good lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, hops, roasting, slight dark ripe fruit, slight caramel, slight vanilla, and a hint of wood. Medium body. Slightly chewy, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, roasting, slight dark ripe fruit, slight caramel, and slight wood finish is dry. 9%ABV is completely hidden throughout.
3.7Rich mahogany brown with a light tan head. Nutty, roasted pecan aroma. Quite nutty, malty flavor. A bit astringent on the finish with light charred bread and nuts.
4.1Bottle. Very dark brown, slowly rising mocha head. Terrific nose of porty fruit, cigar box, cream, light coffee and licorice. Dark malty palate mirroring the aroma, full bodied and richly flavored. I’ll say it again: I love the resurrection of this series!
4.0Pours very dark with a thick creamy beige head. Looks just like the 8 but the aroma is a different animal all together. Hops dominate the nose on this brewMalt is more in the back ground but very noticeable Great flavour rich and creamy with a perfect blend of malts. Finishing in a light and refreshing hop burst. Another fantastic beer!
4.2Bottle, a re-brew from the Jewbelation Vertical Pack. Oh my... Oh... Oh my... Pours opaque black/very deep brown; thin tan head, lacing is average to slightly above. Nose is where the magic happens: God DAMN this is feminine on the nose, florals, and soft fruit, with fresh oak and tobacco leaf, ephemeral, delicate, startlingly complex. I love the fuck out of how this smells. Flavours are Rich, lots of tobacco and dark, dried fruit. Rather vinous notes to be had here as well. Very powerful and dry on the finish, alcohol comes through as it warms. Fucking stellar.
Schmaltz - You listen now: If you ever stop doing the Jewbelation packs, you had fucking well better re-brew the 9, as it makes my soul weep with joy. Dammit. I’m tearing up. Great stuff.
2.826th April 2009
Very dark brown beer with a red tinge. Opaque semi dry palate. Rich chocolately malt. Has an obvious aged feel. the hops have faded. Not complex.
3.6Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma was a combination of dark fruits, toffee, dark grains and a hint of caramel. Flavor began with toffee and chocolate and was joined by dark fruits and a hint of alcohol.
4.212oz, from Jewbelation vertical pack.
Pours opaque, nearly black, quite full head. Nose is chocolate, roast, a bit of coffee, some dark fruit, mild resiny hops. I had Eight last night, yet it’s hard to remember what that tasted like, but this seems different enough, a bit more to the chocolatey and roasty side and I think even tastier than the Eight. This is a damn good brew. Sweet, savory, thick, creamy, nice coffee-like bitter on the finish. I can see this one cellaring nice for a year or two.
3.9This has a strong armoa of quite dark malts, and a lot of them. It reminds me of someone needing to go out for food ’cuz this is going to be one looong sparge... just a hint of coffee in there. Pours with a really nice thick creamy foam head, it’s quite thick and oily, though as it poured I could see it was quite clear. Taste as thick and as sweet as you’d expect from the smell, there is a real tartness in the end of it like licorice but without the accompanying flavour, quite a bit of hops then. The components are quite in balance with eachother, leaves a definite thick sweet % taste, cofee-ish malts, then the hops just keep on hangin’ on....
3.32010 vertical pack. Minimal head on dark brown. Not as thick looking or frothy as the 8th. Thinner scent but more alcohol in the nose. Swirling brings out dark malt, molasses and spice. Flavour is strong than advertised by the scent. An intriguing sourness in the finish and lots of licorice root and molasses bitterness. A hint of charcoal in the aftertaste. A lot going on in a short span. Strong alcohol throughout. Tasty but not something I want a lot of. Mainly comes across like a thick backwoods beer and bark concoction.
3.4Pour is black with a light red glow, with a slightly darker head than the 8, more of a light tan head. Nose is malty and roasty and though I feel like there should be more its rather simple. Overall much more mellow than than 8, in taste and palate without changing all that much.
3.5Pours extremely dark brown with a slight red hue and a thin off-white head. Aroma is of darker malts, not that sweet and not as alcoholic as other strong ales. Flavor is a tad on the sharp side at first but transitions into a much smoother bitter roasty finish. Quite mellow for the ABV.
3.6Bottle from the rebrewed gift pack. Pours a dark coloa brown with a khaki head. Aroma of dark sugary malts and plummy fruit. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor of caramel, chocolate, and nutty malts countered by a spicy bitterness. Tannins and alcohol on the finish.
3.612 oz. bottle as part of the Vertical Jewbelation pack, purchased from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a deep cola brown with a finger-thick tan head that sticks for quite a while. Aroma of roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, earth, toasted brown sugar, ash, and root beer. Flavor of bitter dark chocolate, lots of roasted malts, molasses, earth, burnt wood, toasted brown sugar, and cola syrup. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a rich, roasty mouthfeel. This one is an improvement over the Eighth, for sure.
3.7On tap at Brouwers, one of the "Chosen Bars." Pours black with a red tinge when held to light. Creamy, dense tan head. Sweeter nose than the rest, with fruits and some cola. This is almost a milder angel’s share. A bit too sweet, and missing some complexity.
3.7Draft at RNH listed as Shmaltz 9th Anniversary - so Im assuming that this is the correct beer. Pours a clear, reddish brown body with a light brown head and lacing. Aroma is sour fruit and wood. Mouthfeel is full bodied with tart, sour fruits, vinous, woody, and some roasted malts.
3.7shared bottle from the vertical gift pack. pours a very dark brown with a 1/4" off white head. dark fruit nose with layers of raisins, figs, and red grapes. medium body filled with tons of fruit - big dark cherries come forward with grapes, figs, and raisins supporting the back end. sweet dark malts circulate the smooth creamy body. sweet, somewhat astringent finish with deep chocolate malts and a touch of dark cherries. liked this one better than number 8.
2.5On tap @ Papago. Pour is dirty brown with a khaki head. Aroma is grainy with additional notes of caramel and grass. Flavor shows the same. Pretty mediocre.
2.5Dirty brown pour. Flimsy malty aroma with some yeast, wheat, light spices. Flavor is muddled, dirty, light hops. Spent malt. Not much to speak of.
3.512 oz. bottle as part of the Vertical Jewbelation gift pack (2010) purchased at Grape & Gourmet. Pours dark brown with a foamy beige head. Interesting aroma of what appears to be an assortment of "holiday" spices, some roasted malt, caramel, and candi sugar. The flavor is like a porter with nutmeg, clove, and allspice. Again, like the 8th Anniversary, this seems to have been an attempt to make a beer resembling Anchor’s Our Special Ale. The result of this is much better at least than Anchor’s recent attempts at their own ale.
3.8Vertical giftpack. grassy nose. bitter, roasty, hoppy. drinks like a high abv porter or maybe imperial brown ale. much different than #8, which had the belgian thing going on. pretty good shit.
3.8(On tap at Papago). Pours nearly black with red hue when held up to light. Khaki head. Taste is sweet with caramel, citrus, grassy notes, bitter chocolate. Full bodied with silky mouthfeel. Finish is bitter with some citrus. Very nice. I prefer this to 8.
4.1Part of HeBrew Jewbelation Vertical Pack - $25.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with a medium-small, thought sustained, light ecru-colored head.
Smell: Aroma of suspiciously burnt bread crusts dunked in morningtime coffee and blended with chocolate-coated dark fruits, chopped nuts, spices (a bit like aniseed and allspice), and discarded wood shavings.
Taste: Roasty grains, charred toasted, molasses, a smidgen of chocolate with a sweet, deep, satisfying dulce de leche taste. Fruitiness of everyday raisins mixed with golden raisins with a slight vinous character. Underlying woodiness. Thin drizzle of almond syrup. Zested citrus fruits and a little pine resin. Moderate bitterness. Earthy spiciness, a bit of bitterness, and noted alcohol warmth on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth, creamyish, inviting mouthfeel.
Drinkability: As with Eigth (8th), a tasty treat and, I must say, a wonderful gift from a brewer to dust off and revive some old, seemingly forgotten brews.
4.8Super tasty as usual with the Jewbelation line. This one has a very distinct prune vibe going. Very straight forward.
3.9Pours deep mahogany-tinged black into a Sam glass. Mocha micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving spot lacing to coat surface. Roasted nut and toast aromas. Deep dark chocolate-covered caramel upfront turning slightly hot in the lasting roasted coffee finish.
3.7Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark color with a very small off-white head. Low carbonation. Aroma was roasted malts, notes of fruits, sweetness. Flavor was sweet, notes of fruits, caramel malts, pretty smooth. This one aged quite well.
