4.4 Part of Hebrew Holiday Gift Pack. Tastes more like a Russian Imperial to me. Delicious alcohol & sweetness. (12oz Bottle/Blue Max) 02/2012
3.7 Bottle and served in yet another Duvel snifter (yeah I have a lot of these): Pours a nearly opaque deep brown with a small head and spotty lace. The aroma has noted of toasted, toffee, charred, and nutty malts along with some Belgian Special B and Aromatic malt. Hint of plum and apricot esters along with grassy, tropical and herbal hops. Some mint, leather, tobacco and sea salt vapours as well... Now this is the "HeBrew character" I was expecting in the past two failed beers. The taste is sweet and malty but unlike the awful beers I dump before this, there is some bitterness and acidity to balance out the flavor profile. Nice undertone of mango and plum that is more a component of the malts than some fruit syrup addition, YEAH! There is also a nice rye snap on the finish I am digging along with some dank hop bitterness. The mouth feel is oily and lush with some metallic and boozy finish. This is what I was expecting from the HeBrew line, a big malt forward warming beer that takes no prisoners... guess what... there are no fruit additions in this beer and it works. Take note brewers!
3.4 13 pours a dark, nearly opaque brown with a bubbly, foamy tan head. Some light spotty lacing disappears quickly off the glass. The nose is alcohol potent with a big nutty, biscuity roasted malt with a nice chocolate note and a bunch of sweetness. My first taste is sweetened in the middle with nuts and molasses rich roasted malts. A mild hop on the finish with a full bodied, sticky mouthfeel. The finish has a warming, pungent alcohol. overall, an okay brew.
3.7 Draft. Pours dark brown/black. Smell is figs, brown sugar, rich caramel and some bourbon notes. Taste is big ripe fruit, some spice, caramel and certainly a know booze element. Very good, but behind the 12th in my opinion.
3.8 Tap at Churchkey. Roughly two years old - poured an almost pitch black color with a tiny tan head. Aroma was still a bit boozy, but had mellowed out quite a bit. Chocolate notes, a ton of roasted malts, dark fruits. Flavor was big on the alcohol - not hot, just very warming. Hops are extremely mellow at this point - wow.
4.0 Had this one twice, once in 2009 and once in 2010. Amazingly strong and almost off-putting due to the amount of ingredients. Tasted almost of caramel, chocolate, coffee, etc. extract! When you’re throwing in 13 varieties of hops and malt, there is a limit. However, other than the alcohol burn, this one rode the wave of beer-strength to the edge of the world. The 14 was just rediculous, hence the Vert.
4.3 Bottle from Pacific Liquor: I had previously written a review for this beer and then somehow lost it, but luckily a bottle resurfaced. Therefore, this is a vintage bottle with 2 years of aging in a cooler. Pours a dark jet black liquid with a fizzy short lived head which retreats leaving behind a thin layer of film for a covering. As for the aroma, there is a sour scent of dead yeast and malts that are starting to turn into a goopy syrupy mess, but there is some smell of roast malts still apparent. The initial flavor is intensely sweet and has a dark fruit like taste such as prune, raisin, and fig, but of course this is because of the time this beer has taken on. Still has a roasty blend of malts that suggest rich black coffee bean added with a little sugar and creamer, though, that flavor was much more apparent in its early days of life. This is still a really tasty beer that has been holding itself together and still hides the high ABV. Rating scores are based on how I remember this tasting fresh.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a small creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, caramel and booze. Flavor was moderately sweet with chocolate, ripe dark fruit, molasses, caramel, toffee, alcohol and a hint of wood with a boozy finish
3.6 12 oz bottle-part of the celebration box but not in order. I may burn for not doing this in order but here goes a good Catholic try!! Hellish dark with no heavenly light coming through. Lots of sugary sweet goodness from the nectar of Jesus on the nose. Taste is of cane sugar, the essence of the Wise Men, the alcohol of the wine of the Last Supper. Chewy like the bread of the breathern. A meal to be sure. One to share with the masses.
3.7 Bottled@Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy deep brown colour, small off-white to beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, some fruits, raisins, rye and mild toasted notes. Flavour is toffee, spices, mild raisins, plum and some mild alcohol. Also some slight wooden and mildly vanillaish notes.
3.7 A: The beer pours a very dark brown color with a small of-white head. S: Lots of sweet and malty notes to the aroma. Big time toffee and caramel, as well as some molasses and brown sugar. Some milk chocolate, dark fruits, and even a bit of vanilla. T: Dark fruits and dark sugars really dominate the flavors. Molasses, brown sugar, and toffee are all there, as is some chocolate. A bit of roasted malt and vanilla, too. M: Medium to full in body with a smooth carbonation. O: This was a really solid beer. Really great maltiness to it.
3.9 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted, molasses and dark chocolate, moderate resin, leather and earth for the hops and yeast, with background notes of raisin, toffee, dried currants and faint licorice. Head is large, frothy turning creamy, light brown with fair lacing and is fully lasting. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is full bodied, syrupy with a soft carbonation and has a heavily alcoholic and chewy finish. This American Strong Ale is a mouthful. Full of dark rich flavors and a hearty and dense palate.
3.7 Bottled - first I missed it because of the ash cloud over Europe, but then I found it in London. A brown beer with an orangey head. The aroma has notes of alcohol as well as sweet and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of soy sauce, malt, roasted malt, hops, and alcohol, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.
4.1 RBSG 2010 - Pours very dark amber and smells of rich malts and dark fruit. The flavor is predominately malt. It’s sweet with good dark fruit notes and some alcohol present, which is hard not to have at 13% abv. It’s a full bodied brew that I enjoyed very much.
2.8 Pours very dark, red hues in the light. Head starts out about a half inch then dies to almost nothing. I hate rating appearance unless it is worth it. Aromas of thick molasses, alcohol, figs, plum.,raisin and caramel. Taste is similar but for me way too sweet. Too much alcohol in the taste too. Lots of raisin and dark fruits. Some caramel and molasses. Long bitter burning finish. Good carbonation level.
3.7 22oz bottle from Pristine Liquors in Spring Hill, FL. Pours dark red-brown with a tan head. Nose is chocolate, booze, plums, dark fruit, mild bitterness, and lingering chocolate. Mild fruit and chocolate in the finish. Medium-bodied and a bit chocolatey, but aging nicely.
3.7 Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma is full of roasted malts with a relatively strong dark fruit note as well a chocolate and a bit of an alcohol note. The flavor has a decent amount of alcohol present, but it is accompanied by chocolate roasted malts and a hint of dark fruits.
3.9 February 19, 2010 tasting with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc & mabel. 22oz bottle courtesy of blankboy. Disclaimer: I find most of the He-brew beers boozy sugar bombs. Poured deep clear ruby with an average diminishing beige head. Smells a lot like a UK barleywine with a huge admixture of fruitiness - moderately boozy - pretty nice, actually. Sweet, fuity and "dark" tasting - almost like a sweet tawny port - lovely, really appealing to my palate. Sticky, thick and sweet mouthfeel, not too boozy in the finish ... mmmmmmmmm! One of the best by them, for me.
3.5 Nice dark roast coffee and hazelnut aroma. Coffee and rootbeer in the flavor with notes of black olives.
3.5 Ruby black color/ lasting tan head. Straw, molasses, dark fruit, chocolate aromas. medium bodied. Molasses, dark toast, dark pit fruit, caramel flavors, boozy warming finish.
4.2 Bomber from Pacific Liquor in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, purchased about 15 months ago ($6.99). Pours an almost pitch black with one finger of light brown foam. Aroma of dark roasted malts, espresso, anise, toasted coconut, smoke, hints of dark fruit, and some booze at the end. Flavor is quite good with really rich chocolate / fudge standing out; also bourbon, tobacco, smoky leather, caramel, raisin, toasted marshmallow, and hints of sweet coffee. Complex with a light level of sweetness that does not distract. There is some detectable alcohol but generally the 13% is well concealed, rendering this readily drinkable. I’ve had the Eleven and Twelve, but this one is my favorite so far. Very well executed. (255, 458)
3.8 Bomber from Market of Choice. Dark brown pour with a moderate beige head and light lacing. Smells of raisins, caramel, molasses, a little booze. Lots of dark fruit in the flavor, along with some chocolate, molasses, a little pine hoppiness and some light heat. A tasty beer, I really enjoyed this one.
3.9 Bottle... Poured deep, dark brown-near black-with a light brown head. The rye is really mice here. Cocoa, bitter-sweet, with dark sugars, toffee, angry hop tone for mild balance but mostly thick with sweetness. Oak, wood-like tannins, dark fruits and a boozy finish.
3.6 Poured from the bottle, it had a deep, nearly opaque chestnut brown color, and a creamy tan head that only briefly appeared before receding to a slender ring against the edge of the glass. The aroma provided a pleasant but subtle combination of dark, sweet malts, licorice, booze, and earthy hops. The flavor was more potent, with the licorice particularly being more pronounced and the alcohol less. There was also a pleasant grainy character, like one of those fancy artisan breads with forty kinds of oats baked on top. The texture is a bit thin, but the thinness is almost welcomed, as it lightens up the beer, helping it go down fairly easily (especially considering the 13% ABV).
3.4 Bomber: Really malt forward, caramel, chocolate, and some subtle raisin or plum aroma. Which is backed with a nice fruity hop characteristic. Appearance is a black pour with a tan head that diminishes quickly. Taste is upfront malt that transforming into a chocolaty and toffee malt backing. Overall, A nice brew all around! Cheers!
3.9 22 oz. bottle shared by Tmoney99 or shigadeyo. Pours a very dark brown color with garnet highlights and a small creamy beige head. The aroma is a hefty dose of rich malty goodness; espresso, chocolate, licorice, sweet dark fruits, and black strap molasses. The flavor is ripe dark fruits, molasses, dark chocolate, zesty rye, black licorice with a moderate sweetness. The finish has a nice bitterness even with the huge malt presence and a nice warming feel. Medium body and a smooth mouthfeel. I liked this beer, but feel that the alcohol is more noticeable and the body thinner than past years. I want to revisit this in a year or two.
3.6 Pours dark brown with light redness along the ridges of the glass and a thing large bubbled off-white head. Aroma is more mellow then its lesser brethrens actually with notes of roast and mellow sweetness. Flavor is of sweet mollases and toast with a bitter hops and alcohol finish. Not as complex as the earlier ones and quite sharp. Medium body.
3.6 Pour is the same as the previous samples from 8 and up; dark with a small tan head. Nose is similar to 11 and 12; dark fruits with notes of caramel and malts. Taste is similar to the 12, slightly amped up with a little more alcohol pungency.
3.7 Bottle (in NZ). Extremely rich. Licorice, soy sauce and fruit cake. But I’m surprised it is 13%, as it drinks easier than that. I kind of feel I like it more than I should...
3.7 12 oz. bottle as part of the Vertical Jewbelation pack, purchased from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours just like the others, a deep cola brown with a tan head that starts small, settles about a finger thick and dissipates into a nice film on the beer. Aroma of numerous roasted malts, cola, earth, dark fruits (plums and dates), toast, brown sugar, and grains. If the smell is more like Eleventh, the taste is more like Twelfth- notes of dark roasted malts, lots and lots of dark fruits, brown sugar, molasses, earth, woody alcohol, and soy. Medium-bodied, with a roasty, boozy, fruity mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Pretty solid.
