3.5 bottle thanks to Kyle, pours dark brown with a tall tan head. Aroma is earthen with wood and tobacco, thin sweet brown sugar and syrup notes. Flavor is sweeter than the earlier years, more caramel and toffee notes with a semi-sweet roast and caramel finishing.
3.4 Molasses and walnut nose, some butter notes. Mahogany, medium yellow head. Walnut and charred oak flavor, dry and hot. with only lesser notes of molasses. Little hop flavor for a beer build as featuring 11 of them. Maybe they mean 11 buds instead of varieties.
3.6 The rebrew... Dark red with a small skiff of tan bubbles. Sweet aroma. Pancakes, light citrus, peaches, no alcohol, chocolate, sugar (not much), red licorice, light sweat only here and there, plums. Good taste of course - Caramel, burnt sugar, light heat, cocoa, thick malts, Stewie talking to Brian about Lois’s box - "That vagina is ground zero man, I mean I..I just wrecked that thing on the way out. And and just to be a jerk I carved ’Brooks was here" on the wall - did you see that... did you see Brooks was here?", slick brew, molasses, something else... yea, alcohol and some bitterness on the back end. Pretty fine brew.
3.4 Extremely dark ruby red with a long lasting cap that towers over my glass. Aroma is toasty vanilla yum with very odd smelling hop that I can’t place. Hit subtle hints of soya sauce in here. Highly drinkable intense flavor. Sweet mild soya sauce, French vanilla coffee, walnuts, and toast. Flavor is so strong but never gets sharp. Bla blab la I could keep listing flavors forever here but for some strange reason I find this beer boring, it’s just not that fun to drink. There is really nothing here I want to drink again but it taste good! Just hit some sweet salty plum or possibly raisin. Maybe I’m just not in the mode for the bee tonight……………..Marks are probably low
3.8 Appearance: as with the other Jewbelations, a blend of dark browns and blacks under a tannish head bordered by a thicker collar. Deep and dense, like the undiscovered depths of a cavern and cave – moody. Nose: dense and meaty and tis just the nose. Buckets and gallons of dark fruits – raisins and figs with chocolate weaving in and out. Fig newtons. Simple yet dense and aggressive in a good way. Palate: rather fast with his flavor profile which is unexpected given the ferocity of his nose. Dry cocoa powder with truffle powder lingering atop the tongue. Figs and earth. Burnt woods, burnt earth in the middle. Medium to medium light weight. Fig and black cake. Final Thoughts: the nose had me drooling in anticipation but the palate was a bit of a letdown. I would have liked to see more oomph in the flavor exploration that the olfactory exploration graced me with. Still good though.
3.7 Bottle - 12 ounce from the Hebrew sampler. Opaque dark brown with a large eruptive brown head. Aroma is that of sweet malt, caramel, dark chocolate, dark fruit and molasses. Taste is strong chocolate and dark fruit notes with more sweet malt, toasted caramel, light toffee, brown sugar, molasses, dusty yeast, and light alcohol. Body is medium-full with strong carbonation and a mild alcohol warmth. Sticky in spots as well. Ends with more toasted caramel, dark chocolate, sweet malt, brown sugar, molasses and dark fruit notes. There seems to be a bit more fruit coming through in the aftertaste - hints of citrus, peach and melon. Alcohol comes through towards the end as well. Tasty either way!
4.2 Bottle. Pours a viscous opaque brown with a slowly forming tan head that retains beautifully. Initial aroma is pleasantly bready, then as the beer breathes a cornucopia of aromas come forward: perfumey woodsy hops, chocolate milk, burnt sugars, cigar box, new leather... Awesome! Full bodied, creamy heavy mouthfeel that is in equal parts heavily malty and fragrantly hoppy. There is a beautiful tango here, between thick sweet chocolatey treacley malts and delicate but assertive perfumey hops with spicy nuances. Incredibly well balanced and richly complex. The finish is very bitter, cleansing the palate and making this beer infinitely drinkable. Having tried nearly the whole series now, I can confidently say that the Jewbelation brews have become my favorite examples of American strong ale. Just so good!
3.8 Bottle, part of the Jewbelation Vertical. Pours deep brown, perhaps not as black as the 10, with again that garnet flash of colour. Head is 1-finger thick, pale tan, and not terribly persistent. Laces quite well, however. Nose is roasty, with notes of tart berries, some oak bark, light cinnamon, tobacco, earth, creosote. Flavours are big, massive, and round, tartness balances with sweet roastiness, very balanced. A solid brew.
4.2 Pours very dark brown with a very thick creamy head. Aroma is very hopy. Lots of pacific North West in this one. Rich creamy mouth feel. fruity and bready at first giving away to caramel and chocolate. The hops come in at the end giving it a pleasant bitter finish. This is an excellent beer. One of the best Jewbelation so far.
3.6 Bottle 355 ml Aroma clean , rich malty base with light alcoholic charcter.7+ Appearance dark hazed brown with lighter top.3+ Flavor and Palate : full bodied. Molasses, malts , rye. Fresh clean approach to malt , well refined. Very smooth for noted strength. Tasty beast.
3.5 Tap at J. Clyde Birmingham AL. Snifter, black with no head. Lager-ish nose with alcohol present. Taste is light hops, burnt maltiness, body is medium with the alcohol well hidden. Pretty good stuff here.
3.4 Thanks to mario rubio for opening the original (2007?) Eleven next to a bottle of the new (2010) re-brew. New brew is in rich maltiness with harsh astringency and alcohol warmth. (approx 2.9) Original shows wonderful rounded bock-like complexity in malt flavors with balancing warmth and slight toffee sweet finish. (approx 3.9) A bit gimmicky I suppose to use the 11 malts, 11 hops etc. (not designed so much around aesthetics of particular ingredients, but making sure there’s 11 of each) but especially the first batch resulted in quality beer ...given enough time to age.
3.6 Black with a soapy head. Stouty, lacey, rye, hides the alohol. Drying finish. The re-issue pack, Jason’s bottle.
3.6 Bottle. Poured an extremely dark cloudy brown with a yellowish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had notes of chocolate, dark bread and toffee with a bit of roastiness and alcohol underlying. Flavor began with dark bread, toffee and a hint of chocolate and had a bit of roastiness that came out in the finish.
4.1 Very dark mahogany pour with a slight ruby highlight and a small, dense, tan head. Ripe dark fruit aroma with some sweet elements in the from of molasses and brown sugar. Theres a fair amount of citrusy hop presence along with some subtle notes of nuts, bread and tobacco. The flavor is again mostly dark fruit but theres a fair amount of roast that wasn’t present in the smell. It also has a bit of coffee and vanilla. Some dark notes of molasses, leather and tobacco in the middle. Citrus and pine hops round out the finish with some notable alcohol. The body is creamy and full with moderate carbonation.
3.7 12oz bottle from Jewbelation Vertical. Pours dark and black, very full head that lingers for a damn long time. The nose is interesting, almost a milky chocolate backed up by dark fruit and a floral, resiny hop presence. Medium body, huge carbonation levels, tons of roast on the palate and other notes reminiscent of leather, tobacco, rye. Interesting but I’m clamoring for more sweetness to go with the bitter, spicy finish.
3.7 This one has a storng heady aroma with deep dark underlying malts and a nice heavy balance of hops, but I just can’t ignore the mettalic twingy dog hair smell. This one spent too much time in the Red Tick Ale vats... Looks great, pours with a nice head, quickly fades, not great on the lacing. This one does a great balance of the malts, hops and %. You can taste them all but the flavour that stays with you is a dark smokey sweet malt and bitter hops toffee coating that lines your palate.
4.5 8-14 vertical pack. Very dark with a pretty good lasting head and a bit of lacing. Aroma of choclate marshmallows and herbal hops. Mouthful and palate as big and thick as a handful of marshmallows. Tasty chocolate coating. Like DDC Aphrodisiac with extra chocolate and herbal hops. A freaking great tasty beer. I could drink this all night, or for an hour and pass out.
3.8 07 Release on tap at Papago in January 2011 -- the chosen year. Pours a dark brown hue with a beige head. Laces nicely. Smells predominatly of powdered cocoa and malt. Tastes like it wants to be a dark IPA -- bitter with hops and dark cocoa. Odd, but good.
3.8 Pour is pitch black with a large tan head with decent retention. Nose is quite sweet, notes of burnt sugar with caramel, and some dark fruit notes. Taste is very much the same. By far the most drinkable of the 8, 9, and 10 so far.
3.7 Pours extremely dark brown close to black with a thick tan head. Aroma is of roasted barley, sweet caramel, burnt sugar, and toast. Flavor is initially of bitterness and alcohol which transitions into a burnt sugar and roasty finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Alcohol is hidden quite well.
4.0 Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a beautiful, thick creamy tan head that retains quite well. Aroma: Milk chocolate, herbal hops, hazelnut creamer, toffee, slight roast. Taste: Alcohol (dark rum or whiskey), roast, dark chocolate, herbal hops, wood. Mouthfeel: Full bodied, creamy, sticky. Moderate carbonation. Overall: A very solid strong ale with decent complexity.
3.6 (On tap at Papago). Pours black with tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma of alcohol, chocolate and pine. Taste is sweet with bitterness on the end. Slick and oily, this finishes bitter. Decent beer.
3.7 12 oz. bottle as part of the Vertical Jewbelation pack, purchased from Wine and Cheese Place. These are all pretty attractive beers that pour a deep cola brown with a finger-thick tan head. The aroma and flavors are all seeming fairly similar, too. This one has a roasty nose, with notes of dark fruits, brown sugar, nuts, toast, and cola. The flavor is deep roasted malts, coffee, earth, toast, nuts, cola, bitter dark chocolate, alcohol, molasses, and dark fruits. Medium-bodied, with a roasty mouthfeel and lingering roast and bitterness. Medium-high carbonation. This one is the most complete beer of the series yet.
3.9 12 oz. bottle as part of the Vertical Jewbelation gift pack (2010) purchased at Grape & Gourmet. Dark brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma of grassy and piney hops with an equal helping of sweet caramel malt. The flavor reminds me mostly of a good barleywine but there is an obvious chocolate undercurrent that adds a welcome complexity and uniqueness. Alcohol is somewhat detectable in both flavor and warmth. Yet another improvement over the previous Jewbelation for my tastes. Solid stuff.
3.5 Draft at Rattle n Hum. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Floral hoppy aroma with a light malty sweetness. Balanced flavor with floral hops and sweet and toasty malty notes. Pretty good.
3.7 hoppy, roasty. could really taste the alcohol on this one. i’m not quite sure this was too much different than #10. for some reason, i really wasn’t feeling this beer tonight. maybe i’m just getting sick of this style. the booziness of this one didn’t particularly help the cause.
3.4 12 oz. bottle, as part of the Jewbelation 8-pack, pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of dried dark fruits and caramel malt. Flavour of dark dried fruits (figs, plum, dates), bitter chocolate and spices, with a bit of an alcohol kick. Solid.
4.0 Had as part of the vertical pack. I think this series gets better as the beers get stronger and fresh.
3.7 Tap at Redlight. Dark copper, brown pour with a thick creamy head. Aroma is dark fruit, spicy, creamy. Creamy thick body with lots of dark fruit notes, prune and fig with a really nice spiciness. Alcohol is starting to really peak through.
