Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. 4.0Draft. This beer is the color of the track tops of the former Soviet Union under a lazing tan head. The aroma has notes of malt and spices. The flavor is sweet malty with some spices to it.
3.7Bottle, pours a dark bruin body with a tan off white head. Dark fruit tones, plum, date, fig, a hint of caramel malts. A big sweet medium etoh level and some light roast y coffee n chocolate tones. Dry tobacco and a drying warmth to finish. Good.
2.7bottle sampled 9/10/10...
dark reddish brown with a tan head.
smells and tastes like caramel, date earthy sweetness and a bunch of floral alcohol. sticky sweet. i’d be hard pressed to drink more than a few sips of this... 5/4/5/3/10/2.7
3.3bomber poured in big dimpled mug. Pours dark auburn with light brown head. Aroma of date, fig, burnt sugar, raisin. Flavor is very sweet, revealing the spectrum of the aforementioned fruit tones, some clove, lots of burnt sugar like the burnt top of a creme brulee. Decently smooth palate, with a warming, almost boozy sensation on the finish, which evokes tones of rum. Some very light roasted tones noticeable but the date / sugar sweetness is dominating. This was pretty different, there’s no doubting that, and not bad, but I won’t be back.
3.5Tasted from a bomber bottle purchased at Lush Roscoe quite some time ago. Pours cloudy dark brown with a blood orange tint along with an average, but very smooth tan head that recedes into an even blanket of lace. The nose is sweet and malty. I don’t know if I would mention the aroma of date without knowing it was already there, but there is a dried fruitiness to it that is unmistakably date along with some milk chocolate and cereal malt. The flavor is chocolate and cereal malt up front and some bitterness on the back with the sweet flavor of dates present the whole way through. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long slightly bitter and date finish.
3.4(bomber, 3/26/10). Clear dark amber color. Medium off white head, which is mostly diminishing. Moderate dark dried fruit aroma. Flavor of the same, with light alcohol and a very light bitterness. Avg duration. Light alcohol finish. Thin/slick texture. Soft-moderate carbonation. Fair lacing.
3.7Smells dark and fruity. Cider, apple, apricot, dates. Tastes sweet and fruity. Nice long lingering aftertaste. Nutty with some biggish malts. Nice bitterness. Pretty good. Better than the 2008 I think.
4.0Brown/red pour with creamy tan head and lace. Aroma of rich sweet caramel malt and a hint of abv with dried fruit. Roasted caramel malt, abv, and a good citrus bitter. (dates). Smooth carbonation and full bodied.
4.0Pours a lasting ring of tan head with a clear, cola colored body. Aromas of smoke, malty, and dark dried fruits. Flavor is dried fruit, malty, and some smoke. Finish is dry, some smoke and flavor continue for a while.
3.222 oz. bottle. Pours a thick light beige head, over a clear brown (SRM 25) body.....nose is date, fig, brown sugar, hint of molasses.....taste is sweet with dried fruit (cherry, raisin, plum) initially, then light coffee, with a bit of cocoa, finishing slightly bitter....mouth feel is medium and sticky, carbonation medium. Although listed as a Dopplebock this has a much more roasted malt finish than most. On the label it is listed as half Dopplebock and half Dubble. The Dubble half has many of the qualities of a Stout. BJCP 6/3/12/4/6
3.4Ah dates! Smells figgy to me. Jammy (date) sweetness, brown sugar, toasty crust. Dark ruby amber, small fizzy tan head. Mostly sweet and balanced with the prevailing alcohol, yet this beer has a tannic edge as well which distracts a bit in it’s metallic character. Quirky as a doppelbock, at this stage it is losing body from the dates and the initial sweetness is fleeting. Finishes a bit leafy and earthy.
3.3Sample at the Hawai’i Admission Day tasting from a bottle thanks to decaturstevo. Red-brown, beige tan cover. Date aroma, sweet caramel. Taste is sweet, very sweet, dates, caramel, light cocoa.
3.6Dark with red highlights and a fizzy tan head. Aroma is caramel and lots of dark fruit. You can really smell the dates. The flavor is moderately bitter and roasty, but with lots of residual sweetness. I wonder if this would age well?
3.1Sampled at the Hawai’i Admission Day tasting. Pours a reddish brown with beige head. The aroma is raisins, dates, and slight fruitiness, a hint of wood, and maple syrup. The flavor is super sweet with lots of dates, raisin, and caramel malt. There are some slightly earthy hops in there, but mostly it is sweetness. Too sweet for me.
4.122zo bottle. Reddish brown color, tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, heavy aroma. Flavor of sweet ripened figs. Bold and flavorful fruity esters coat the palate. Finishes with a musty malt flavor along with a good bit of alcohol. Very sticky body, with loads of residual sugars. Dark date sugar.
2.2In short: An aggressive sweet and fruity amber ale of some kind. A sipper that should not be one. Meh.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed about one year after the beer release (was it brewed more than once during the year?)
The look: Clear dark red body topped by a medium beige head with low retention
In long: Nose of bakery, caramel and just a bit of dark fruits (dates mainly). Taste is harsh. Biting alcohol despite the below 8% level, very sweet with a strong brown sugar sensation, earthy dates that you picked up in the dirt, tree roots, watered down caramel and toffee, toasted bread crust, a lot of tobacco, some metallic rust. A strange bitterness to end the whole thing. The bitterness does not feel like a hop bitterness, it is more like biting in a bitter fruit. Aggressive carbonation. Because I knew it was made with dates extract I expected a juicy easy to drink bland beer. This is really not the case here. This is aggressive, harsh and totally lacking refinement. Zero drinkability bonus point from me. Objectively the beer is probably not so bad. It doesn’t feel amateurish or poorly put together. It is just really (REALLY) does not work for me. A beer brewed with dates just does not do it to me. And sadly, for as long as keep a honest picture of me on eHarmony.com I will only get dates from my beer.
4.0pours reddish brown with a nice head. Low retention. Very malty aroma sweet and bold, very fruity almost like Christmas cake with lots spices and brown sugar.. Flavour is very bready. Reminds me of fruit cake. It has the bold strong character of a Dopple bock with a great comlexity and yeast flavour of a traditional Belgian double. With a strong smokey wood flavour in the finish. This is a fantastic brew very unique and complex. Another great beer from Hebrew!
3.9Bottle, thanks to TheHulk. Pours clear deep toffee brown, with a red hue. Thin off-white head quickly reduces to naught. Lacing is spotty to poor. Nose is banana, caramel, buttered raisin toast, sweet bready notes, maybe rye bread or fruitcake. Flavours are sweet and spicy, definite raisin notes (I’d like to say date notes, but I’d be lying if I said I could tell the difference), caramelly/rye bready notes predominate, plus light lemon character, ginger, cardamom, spice. Finish is fruitcake, raisins, brandy, orange, A deceptively complex, thoroughly enjoyable beer. Now my only question is why is this so incredibly nice, and Human Blockhead is so incredibly not nice.
3.8Aroma is heavy, plums and spice, but mellowed by sweet browned malt. Great head and lacing, a swirl of the glass reactivates the head. The sweetness from the malts is hidden amongst the dates, it is quite moist and bready sort of like fresh cake. The yeast and foam lasts on your tounge, you have to savour it a bit before the next sip.
3.8Sweet cola and licorice nose. Deep crimson color, thick medium head. Sweet, super spicy, some citrusy bitterness. Medium carbonation, big body, sweet spicy warming alcohol finish. Great play of sweetness and spiciness, complex, tasty beer.

3.5In the bomber bottle from Leuken’s Liquors. Pours a chestnut brown with a thin off white head. Huge aroma of fig newtons. Slightly lemon and tart at first, but this flavor is rapidly displaced with a strong candy sweetness. Finishes lightly with a smidge of curaçao at the end. This is a bit thin at the finish what with all the sweetness. It is nothing at all like a dopplebock.
4.022 oz. bottle, pours dark brown. Aroma of dates, toffee and caramel malt. Flavour of potent dates, toffee, caramel malt, with lots of sweetness. Excellent brew.
3.5Bomber: Aroma is malts, slight Belgian undertones, lightly fruity, date and prunes, roast, caramel, nuts, and yeast. Appearance is a clear dark amber with a thick to medium sized tan head that lingers. Flavor is roasted mates, then mildly going into a Belgian taste, prunes, caramel, yeast, and slightly nutty. Palate is carbonated on the tongue, effervescent mouth feel, with a lingering roasted malt aftertaste. Overall, It’s a nice blended beer that I quite enjoy. The best of two worlds. Cheers!
4.1(22oz. bottle). Pours Hazy amber color with thick off-white head. Aroma of dates! Taste is sweet and slightly sour. Medium body with sticky texture. This is a super tasty beer! They’ve brilliantly infused dates into this beer without making it overpowering or too sweet. It is easy to drink and deceptively strong. Excellent!!
3.6bottle, via trade with tgncc, bubbling guisher with an almond honey colored pour, sticky tan foam, aromas of pitted fruits and brown sugar, flavor has a lot of date and fruits with some molasses, malty rye bread, slight bitter finish
3.6Draught at Rattle n Hum. Transparent dark brown with near nonexistent head. Aroma is Christmas spice, big ginger bread, some cinnamon, light molasses. Taste is sweet and has lots of spices, ginger bread that goes light bitter at end. Good brew for holiday season. Light syrupy feel on tongue.
3.722oz Bottle. A dark reddish brown color body with a large lasting foamy off white head , lots of jagged lacing ,medium carbonation . Aroma is of sweet caramel malt ,dates ,brown sugar , walnuts and a hint of peaty smoke. Flavor of sweet cereal, brown sugar ,cloves, dates , rasins ,walnuts and a bit of alcohol at the finish . Full body , big chewy mouthfeel , nutty boozy finish . Quite drinkable and intresting but a little odd as a whole .
3.5Thin head of off white bubbles. Light carbonation. Sickly sweet aroma with lots of raisins and dates along with some sticky malts. Lots of dark fruit and typical dark roasted malts for a dopplebock. Color is a dark mahagony brown. Wow, distinct raisin and date flavors. Lots of dark fruit, dark candi sugar and sweetness. Moderate thickness and sweetness with lots of dark malts and molasses. Finishes sticky and sweet. A decent brew from HeBrew but not one of my favorites.
3.6Sampled in a 22oz bottle. Pours dark brown and clear. No real head on it. It drinks with incredible maltiness. Really nice but a bit on the strong side. If you like a nice dark malty brew, well worth a try.
