He'Brew Rejewvenator 2010

I love when you open a door or turn a corner and realize there is an entire world that you’d never imagined existed, that’s in fact overflowing with people, schemes, and action. 2010 Sacred Species #3 seemed so obvious-Grapes. Noah’s first vineyard debacle (Genesis 9:20) to Dionysus, mythical Bacchus to Bar Mitzvah bad boys, Mogen David and Manischewitz. Appropriately Epic shtick. How many cups of Concord in childhood and many times have I heard: "But Jews don’t drink beer!" This year we came across the raging debates, alternative science, internet controversy and tribal rivalry of World Records relating to Š Grapes. Speed catching (67 in one minute, 1189 in 30 minutes!); Solo throw, run, catch (40 ft!!); Longest distance (354’4", shot from a water balloon launcher!!!); Greatest Height record (788 ft skyscraper!!!!) For this third incarnation of Rejewvenator I’m simply letting the mythological and pop cultural shtick rest and slurping together with all of you in a toast to this bizarre and delicious freakshow that we call Life... L’Chaim!

3.4 I like this beer I really do but it has a strange flavor. The aroma is that of grapes with a nutty background. Grapes and nuts...hmmm. Upon tasting, nuts are easily detected with a slight grape profile. Very interesting brew indeed. The color is an excellent deep brown hue that lets others know that you are someone who knows what they like in their glass. Definitely worth giving a shot and why not try the others if you come upon them.
2.9 Draught at Rattle N Hum. Murkey red/brown - white edges. Sweetness. Red berries. Nutty. Grapes. Red grapes. Fruity. Light yeasty. Light flowery. Roasted. Bread notes. High malty. Wierd.
3.6 22oz bomber poured into a shaker. Pours a lightly cloudy brownish purple with minimal off-white head. Aroma of figs and dark fermented fruits with a good dose of concord wine. Taste is medium bitter. Caramel, some pine and some roasty nuts. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Soft carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad. Not really what I was expecting but still ok. I wish I would have got this fresh because I’m sure it would be a lot better. But, since I got it for $3 on the discount rack, I’ll gladly finish the bottle.
1.8 Bottle served in Duvel snifter: Pours a reddish brown with a surprisingly short lived head and minimal lacing. The aroma has notes of grape juice, honey, brown sugar, crystal and toasted malts, and some antiseptic vapour. The taste has some fruitiness but seemed flat and almost stale. Versus most HeBrew big beers this one is rather mundane and utterly boring, not even the malt pop on this. Washed out flavor profile and chalky medicinal finish. Heck, this is not even boozy and hot like some of its stablemates and that would have even been welcomed to excite this flabby blahness. The tepid mouth feel just adds to the ... wait I dosed off there for a second, oh yeah this is a disappointing offering to say the least. Epic fail!
3.0 Bottle - TW & More Sterling - pours a murky dark orange with a quickly vanishing white head. Aroma is a bit meaty and funky to me. This has been aging for a year so that affects things. Taste is weird, a bit bitter finishes dry. Overall, it’s OK.
2.7 Bottle/22oz - Pours a reddish brown in color with a small off-white head that faded quick and produced some very minor lacing on the glass. Aroma has the distinct concord grapiness that you would expect and sticky sweet. Some Belgian yeast. Flavor is very muddled mix of grape, mild pine hops and very sweet malts. Good experiment... the result is not that good. I have had other concord grape beers much better than this one... disappointing result from a quality brewer...
4.0 On tap at Urge. Dark hazy reddish orange amber with a creamy tan head. Caramel grape and white wine aroma with light cola notes. Tastes of grain caramel more red wine flavors than the nose suggests and a tangy lightly sour finish with some sweet apple notes on the back end.
3.0 Name: Rejewvenator Date: June 15, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Hop City, Atlanta Vintage: 2010 Appearance: clear dark ruby red, fine beige head, drippy lace Aroma: sweet fruity aroma, touch of grape, light earthyness Flavor: sweet malt flavor, lots of drying earthyness, light spicyness, touch of dark fruits Overall: a bit of a letdown this year Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 11/20 Rating: 3/5.0 Drinkability: 6/10 Score: ** /4
3.1 draft. Pours cloudy amber foamy off white head, nose oxidized cardboard plums and cherries flavors oxidized malt, stale malt, plums, bland, old doughy malts
2.7 Murky reddish brown, thin ring of foam. Smells like booze, bread, grape and sugar. Very heavy, almost unappealingly so. Definite grapes in the flavor, plus some brown sugar and bourbon. Lots of prune and raisin, too. I didn’t really care for it...
2.4 Bottle from total wine Sterling. They were guarding this stuff like it was gold. You had to ask for it by name. Talk about overkill. It’s one of the least aesthetically pleasing beers I’ve seen so far. It looks like flat coke. It smells a bit like grape juice with a slight hint of Belgian yeast. The taste is muddled. It finishes with a slight tartness. I can’t believe I bought two bottles of this crap.
3.6 Tap. Pours to a deep brown body with a thin tan head. The aroma and flavors are oddly figgy even though there aren’t figs in this? Perhaps some dates and prunes too. It’s pretty malty and I liked it pretty well. Sweet, but not sugary and/or sticky.
2.7 Bottle:   Lets just say that I won’t even go into how the one appears.   Going straight to the flavor.   If you were to take 51% Welches Grape Juice and mix it with say... a piss poor Dubbel... so many I cannot think of one at the moment, well... you wouldnt be far off from what I have here.   Somewhat smells like grape juice, necco wafers, and a really malty amber.   This seems so far off from other years... just can’t wrap my head around it other than to say Alcoholic Grape Juice.   Ugh...
3.0 22 oz. bottle purchased @ Table and Vine, West Springfield, MA. Used a lager glass. Murky brown color (Like muddy river water) Off white head that died fast. No lace. Good carbonation level. Nose smells like Welch’s Grape juice. Tastes of grapes, malt, caramel, fig and nuts. Medium body. Oily texture becomes dry in the finish. A very odd blend. It has a Bock –like quality but… I’m not telling my friends to run out and buy a bottle of this.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a reddish brown with an off-white head. Sweet & fruity aroma with caramel, grape juice, yeast and brown sugar. Sweet and malty flavor of concord grape juice, dark fruit, caramel, molasses and had a bit of bitterness.
3.6 pours reddish brown with 2 solid fingers of offwhite head. Aroma of figs, dark fruit, slight bit of red grape. Tastes like a malty dark-fruit infused doppelbock - dried fruits, figs, raisin, dried plum, hint of red grape. Very easy to drink. This one had potential, but was just missing something that kept it from being memorable. The bomber went down easy, despite being 8% plus
3.4 Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Created a firm layer of frothy foamed head while the liquid was a lightly tinted brown that was hazy. As for the nose, a robust aroma freshly cut fruit is paired nicely with a sweet base of caramel like malts but there is also a faint scent of barrel aging or wood. The palate tingles my tongue yet it doesn’t seem high in carbonation but it does have a heavy mouth feel that is different than most other beers. The flavor confuses me somehow with an odd combination of lush purple grapes while at the same time it could be a sweet green grape, however, this beer does holds a strong backbone of high quality malts that add to the sweetness of this beer and it certainly distinguishes itself from other doppelbocks.
3.4 Nice copper-caramel body with some carbonation and a solid head. Well-balanced aroma of fruity citrus and grain, this smells very appetizing. Flavour is a good barley and bread mix with just a hint of grape. This is well balanced and extremely tasty, but the mouthfeel is too cloying and leaves some odd weird flavours lingering. Still it’s worth a try.
2.8 Tap at Churchkey. Clear brown pour. Nose holds monstrous grape, dark fruit, molasses, and Cointreau. Unimpressive grape-forward flavor. Watery, not impressed.
4.2 Grape flavor discernible, very unique and delicious. Interesting. Carmel color... more Belgian than Bock
2.9 22oz bottle poured into a Belgian lambic flute. Appearance: Pours a hazy amber/brown in glass. Not much of a head, was white and soon dissipated...the flute could have something to do with it. Aroma: Not surprising, the sweetness of grape juice right off the start. Pear, pineapple, cherries, oranges, light molasses. Taste: Sweet grape taste...flat, not much carbonation at all. Could have waited too long to drink? The taste seems way more toned down than the aroma. Palate: Smooth, light-med bodied, some fizzy feel. Overall: It’s good but I expected a lot more. Curious to know if the taste is related to the age. Not bad at all, but I prefer the previous Rejewvenator years a lot more.
3.4 Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured hazy reddish brown with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate tart grape and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet & sour fruit flavor and a medium sweet & sour finish of moderate duration. Good young that should be better with some age.
3.7 5ooml bottle split with Ann. I’m pretty sure I had this on tap and rated it as well..Deep, glowing amber-brown color. Thin, frothy beige head. Has really mellowed out in the 8 months of closet life. The juice stands firmly, with some creamy, sugary dark brown chocolate notes. An odd creature certainly, but not so awkward in it’s mix...the flavors do sort of complement each other. A little light in body, somewhat fluffy and watery. Could have used some more rich Dubbel or Doppelbock tones..maybe the grape juice covers them up. Some pleasant dark fruit tones I suppose. OK.
3.7 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark copper pour with a very thin white head. Sweet and fruity aroma with lots of grape and malt hints. Fruity flavor at the start with tons of grape and malt flavors. Dry and malty middle that leads to a slightly bitter and lingering fruit aftertaste.
3.5 Pours a medium hazy brown red color with quickly dissapating tan head. Aroma is very sweet with some earthy dark cherry notes and some belgian yeasty spice. Flavor is like a nice dubbel with a little more kick. Dark fruits and sweet caramel flavors dominate accented by some yeastiness and syrup flavors as well as an earthy hop presence and slight warmth. Overall, enjoyable.
3.0 Bomber. Pours a bruin body with an off white head and poor retention. Dark fruit tones and spicy belgian yeast tones. Cherry, raisin, and some grape notes, feels artificial like fructose syrup and big sweetness. Sugar y and sweet with a lighter spice tone. Etoh latent fruit, some caramel and messy as always.
3.5 Sample poured from a 22 oz. bottle at St. Louis Microfest 2011. Pours a dark, cloudy plum-amber color with a small tan head. Aroma of fruitcake, raisins, caramel malts, brown sugar, and earth. Flavor of dark fruits (plums, raisins, grapes), caramel malts, toasted brown sugar, earth, and dough. Medium-bodied, with a vinous, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Interesting beer.
2.9 Picked this up because I enjoyed the previous year so much. Shouldn’t have though. Pours a dirty brown with a almost non existent white head. Aroma is grape juice and malt. Taste is like a big glass of Welch’s grape juice with sweet malt. It’s one of those combinations that should have been left alone.
3.6 Appearance: Presents a darkened amber-brown body of modest clarity and a medium-sized, beige head with fairly decent staying power. Smell: A scent of dark bread, liberally toasted, and served up alongside varying notes smelling of packed brown sugar, concentrated grape juice, and a drop of molasses. Taste: Toasted bread spread over with dark brown sugar and crushed rock candy for a fairly sweet taste overall. Dark fruits along with a swig of Juicy Juice. Small hint of nutmeg spice. Minor bitterness, though it sustains until the drying, warming finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Moderate carbonation. Overall: It’s different and interesting to some degree, but the flabby sweetness throughout has me happy I’m only stuck to an eleven ounce goblet and not a twenty-two ounce bottle.
3.1 Cloudy ruby brown color. Medium head. Aroma and taste are very dubbel to me. Grape in both aroma and taste.
