Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink. Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads. Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

clear pale, white head
wheat, red gooseberries, red fruit, cereals, hops, grass
red fruit, wheat
1.0Clear, amber with a white head and very high carbonation. Aroma is very strong rose petals and herbs. Taste is citrus, bitter gooseberry, herbal and earthy.
3.6330 bottle from LCBO. 5% alc/vol. Pours a hazy deep golden colour with a small head that dissipates quickly. Fruity aroma with notes of yeast and bread. Taste matches the aroma with citrus and pine notes. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Nothing spectacular. But it's much better than the average score it's been getting on RB.
3.2500ml bottle. Clear and golden with a moderate white head. Earthy aroma with citrus notes. Flavour is light, floral, citrus, not ad tart as I expected. A bit herbal in the finish. Not my favourite Williams Bros beer but ok
3.8500ml bottle as Williams Bros Grozet: BBE Sep 2018. Second beer in a random tasting session with myself on 14th July 2017. Nice clean and clear pour, light amber/golden body, white blanket of foam on top. Having read ’the blurb’ on the rear label I was expecting a semi-sour Gooseberry and citrus flavoured beer, this was not the case. I liked the subtle citrusy/gooseberry infused feel and was really pleased it didn’t dominate too greatly. It’s not the first beer I’ve had with ’Bogmyrtle’ in either. Really pleased I bought this, nearly didn’t because of my boredom with citrusy golden beers. Another Williams Bros beer I enjoyed, good on them!
3.7500ml bottle from Aldi. Pours a light amber with a lasting small white head. Aroma is earthy, floral, bready, dried citrus fruit and gooseberry. Silky and honeyed in the mouth with some light carbonation. Very floral and leafy with some straw and honey from the malt, puckering gooseberry and citrus zest leading into a bitter finish and back to that gooseberry. Not like any beer I’v had before, hints of white wine and cider in the mouth feel. I love to try a beer that is different ! Probably wont buy again as it’s not really what i’m looking for in a beer, but that doesn’t mean it’s not tasty.
2.4Bottle. Yellowy Gold. Gooseberry & wheat ale. Unusual, rather vegetal, ale. Interesting but not very drinkable. Unpleasant lingering aftertaste. Not for me.
(2008)
3.6Pours light amber, clear. Not much head. Vegetal aroma, with a bit of red berry under that. Herbal flavors. Light/medium body. Tasty.
3.2Clear golden brown with little head. Slightly fruity, slightly musty aroma. A lot of earthy and herbal notes, and slightly malty. Medium bodied. Unusual.
3.2Klares goldgelb mit wenig Schaum. Malzig, leicht fruchtig, Stachelbeere, etwas Heu, kräuterig.
4.20,33l Flasche Grozet Gooseberry Ale. Hellgelb trüb, wenig Schaum. Sehr beeriger Duft. Hollunder, rote Johannisbeere, Stachelbeere. Frischer Stachelbeer Geschmack, dazu Hopfen und sanft bitter im Abgang. Dieses Bier hällt was es verspricht, es ist ein leckeres Stachelbeerbier. Leider ist es hier vollkommen unterbewertet!
0.9On cask at the Lioness of Leith, Edinburgh, 10/7/16. Only the 3rd time I’ve bought a beer and not been able to drink it. Two sips and I left the pub. Genuinely atrocious. "Aged with citrus fruits." Insert: "decomposing". Extremely nasty on the palate. I’m beginning to seriously doubt the merit of Williams’ status. Broken Dial was good. Joker is good. March of the Penguins is good. But beyond that I’m struggling.
2.1Bottle thanks to Vestergaard. Pours clear golden with a small white head. Aromas of.. cakes? Spiced christmas cakes. Spinach, citrus. Taste is citrussy, herbal, spinach, metal. Fuck this is bad.
2.6On bottle thanks to Ottfather! Pours a clear, pale yellow with a white head. Aroma has rose leaf floral notes, spinach, light herbs, some hops, but not much goozeberry. Taste has a light sweetness, dry herbal notes and a small acidic note. Not very fruity though. High carbonation and a rather light body.
2.5Not impressed. In fact, not impressed at all. Clear yellow body with huge head. Taste is somewhat sweet, but really drab with a hint of sour, surely from the gooseberries. That’s the only highlight of the beer, along some lemongrass and citrus notes. Not bad, but surely not impressive, I will probably not try it again.
3.0Bottle. Straw yellow color with white foam. Aroma: very malty with honey and grass and berries. Taste: gooseberry, fruity and malty, drinkable.
3.1Big white head doesn’t last. Clear yellow body. Fruity resiny lemongrass aroma with menthol and citrusy gingery notes. Dryish fruity spicy lemongrass taste with gingery notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish resiny gingery lemongrass aftertaste with fruity wooden notes. Interesting and different. Works pretty well, too. (0.5l bottle, from Cornelius, Edinburgh.)
3.0lCear light golden with a small white head. Aroma is hay, bread and citrus. Taste is elderflower, citrus and malt
3.3330ml bottle. Pours a clear, golden yellow with a thin, white head. Aroma has notes of caramel, wild berries, floral, and hints of wood. Taste is balanced. Berry notes but not sweet with bread, caramel, floral, and like a twiggy/herbal woodiness. Medium body and carbonation. Clean in the mouth with a slightly dry finish. Overall interesting. You do get the berries but it isn?t sweet. Bread, caramel, berries, and a clean finish.
3.1Bottled. Slightly hazy pale yellow color with a fine white head. Aroma is quite peppery, yeasty, breaddy and fruity, notes of citrus and herbal. Flavor remembers me a German pils, light bitter and sweet. Lively carbonation and oily texture in a medium body, bitter dry finish. Good beer, nice drinkability.
3.2Surprisingly herbal nose with faint wheat, hay and confectioners sugar. Gooseberries come through more on the taste, which is lightly tart, crisp and a touch medicinal. Simple ale with some weird infusions. Aight.
2.70.33 bottle. Clear, pale gold color and a medium, white head. Aroma of gooseberry of course, grapes, and some pale malts. Taste is really soft; gooseberries dominate this insubstantial source of flavor. Medium body, slick texture, and average carbonation. Finish is long and quite true to the promise of gooseberries - as a matter of fact it is the best part of the entire experience. Overall a mediocre brew, could be better obviously.
2.9Bottle at Haket in Gothenbourg. Smell of pine and butter. Similar taste, malty with pine and butter.
3.5Lots to like here. It’s pale coloured and cloudy, with a big luxurious white head. Body is lovely and creamy with an underlying grainy texture. Some zingy fruit in the aroma and lots more in the taste, including the gooseberries. Lager malt also does its stuff; I’m sadly insufficient expert in the virtues of bog myrtle to comment.
3.2Drunk from 50cl bottle bought from Bierhuis in Ossett. Slight hint of gooseberry in pale ale.
3.0Golden Pale color, hazy liquid and frothy head.
Light fruity aroma.
Taste - bitter and a bit sour... spicy finish.
nice green impression... nice ale!
3.3Bottle at work. Sprint beer. Clear golden bright coloured pour with a reluctant white frothy head. Aroma is damp hay straw, tangy citrus, lager notes, some spicy citrus rind. Flavour is composed of crisp base malts, pils, straw, tangy citrus rind, lemon, zippy, spicy notes. Palate is light and crisp with highish carbonation. Nice and drinkable. .
