"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves. Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture. Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

2.9Aroma: seawater with chocolate mixed in; I’m scared; Appearance: dark brown with an unnaturally white head; some lacing; Taste: a watered down chocolate stout; Palate: medium body (was expecting heavy) with a watery finish that wasn’t all bad; Overall: "not as bad as the other one" (Lobster Lover’s). Wouldn’t buy again.
3.1Bottled. Deep black color with a nice beige head that not last longer but keep a nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, dry fruits and coffee. Flavor is bitter from toasted malt, slightly sweet, notes of dark fruits like plums. Low carbonation, medium body and thin textures with a sweet bitter finish.
3.8Sampled at catch 22 bottle share! Pours a deep blackish brown with bubbly off-white head. Aroma and taste are like a salty, earthy brown ale. Very interesting, really cool.
3.0Bottle. Nose is malt, yeast, caramel, some red berries, biscuit. Taste is milk chocolate chocolate, caramel, malt, the faintest hint of salt, plums and dark fruits. Feels a lot like an old ale. Mouthfeel is thin.
It’s an old ale with chocolate malt. It’s OK. The seaweed is a gimmick more than an ingredient.
3.5Rated from old notes. Very dark, almost like a stout in appearance, but with a lighter body. Very strong chocolate notes. Faint saltiness. Good even if the ingredients don’t quite fully come together.
3.0Ale scura e curiosa con note di malto, frutta secca, cioccolato e un retrogusto "pulito" e quasi "salato"... Corpo medio-lieve, struttura discreta, non è scipita ma manca qualcosa. Particolare.
2.9500 ml bottle @ Kaisla, Helsinki. Dark brown almost black in color with a thin white head, almost no lace at all. Aroma is light roasted malt, caramel and hints of ash. The flavor is mostly ash, old malts, light vegetal, and roasted salty. Thin-bodied. The finish has a mild notes of vegetables. Strange but still ok!
3.2Brown bottle, 500ml, margiotta. Pours dark dark brown with a Ruby hue and very little foam subsiding quickly. Scent is nice Porter? With a sweet musk. Taste is nice simple ale without much body but a consistent sweet musk. Finish is plain and a bit watery. Good.
3.8500ml bottle, pours black with a lasting, creamy tan head. Aroma is creamy chocolate, vanilla, mild dark fruity notes. Body is full, velvety, and creamy, as it develops it thins out and the finish is drying. Carbonation is very fine. Nicely done.
2.9Drunk from 50cl bottle bought from Bierhuis in Ossett. Enjoy ale dark ale with hint of sea.
3.5Botlle from my friend Bob. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a chocolate and toffee aroma. There is a medium-bodied smoked malt flavor with a bit of chocolate and a vegetable finish.
3.9Live rating of a 500 ml bottle that’s been in the cellar for some time. Poured into an English pint. Tar and farmyard aroma with something a little briney. Properly black stout with a creamy off-white head. Smooth Chocolate and vanilla flavours. The brininess does not persist or intrude, but this is a rather delicious, mellow stout, with a bonus point for a particularly velvety mouth feel. Unexpectedly ungimmicky, and rather lovely.
3.6Bottle at home. Black / dark brown coloured pour with reddy hues and alasting light tan head. Aroma is sweet nutty toasted malts, earthy roast, malt loaf, little raisin. Sweet and rounded malts on the nose. Flavour is composed of nutty, sweet malts, earthy, mineral, little salty, sweet plumy fruits, dried fruits. Palate is medium sweet, moderate carbonation, little tang in the finish.
3.6Flasche aus Helsinki. Dunkle Farbe. Der Geschmack ist malzig und leicht salzig. Das Seegras kommt leicht im Abgang. Mit nur 4,4% etwas leicht, aber trotzdem recht gelungen. Erinnert an ein Porter
3.1Clear dark brown, small offwhite head. Malty, light roasted aroma. Roasted, malty flavour. Ok bitterness. Decent.
3.7Black color and white average head.
Roasty aroma (coffee, chocolate).
Taste is very well balanced - not too bitter, sweet or sour.
Palate with medium body.
Great dark ale... love it!
3.3Lukt: Frukter, kaffe, lakris og karamell.

Drukket Som Alias@Kelpie Seaweed Ale.
3.8Caoba, casi negra. Espuma ocre cremosa tipo guinness. Aroma a bizcocho, café, chocolate,... Notable.
3.5Cask at Congress, Longton. Pours black brown with a light tan head. Some salt, chocolate, malty. Very porter like.
2.5Pours dark amber with green shades. Rapidly disappearing ivory head.
Aroma is rich espresso coffee. Seaweed not noticeable.
Fresh and light, with intense flavor of coffee beans.
2.7500 ml bottle shared by Wilrunforbeer in a cellar clean out afternoon. Dark brown color thin white head, no lace or retention at all. Aroma is light roasted malt, caramel and hints of ash. The flavor shows me ash, old malts, light vegetal with a light hint of salt in the finish. The body is thin but maybe that is a good thing for this. The finish has a mild off putting vegetal note in a porter like brew. On the strange side for sure.
2.5I’m sure this is a wreck. I’ve had this at least a year and a half, and just couldn’t come up with a good reason to open it. Pours dark amber brown with a beige head. Aroma is caramel, roast, and a bit of low tide. For those tha haven’t been near an ocean, low tide don’t smell too good. Flavor is kind of sweet. It’s thin, with caramel flavor, a touch of roast and some dried seaweed in the finish. No carbonation to speak of, might just be the age on this. Not undrinkable, but I’m not going to seek out another.
3.2(bottle 28/04-2015) low brown head, almost black color, roasted aroma, slightly bitter, rather smooth roasted taste. BB date Mar 2015.
3.2500ml bottle from Ship in a Zbottle, west Kirby. Deep brown colour with a tan head. Aroma is like rock pools on the beach. The taste sweet.
3.5Bottle. Aroma sweetish, caramel, toasted, toffee. Clear darker ruby brown colour. Taste is caramel driven as well, but well balanced, also light chocolate/roasted notes. Lightly salty. Good one.
3.5* Bottle. Pours slightly hazy, very dark brown, almost black, with a tan head.
* Aroma is dark malts & roasted earthy & slight seaweed.
* Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, very fine bubbles.
* Taste is medium rich, roasted malts, chocolate & dark fruits.
* Finish is tangy & slightly salty.
* Dark ale, roasted malts & chocolate.
3.5Bottle. Pours dark red/brown with a small off-white head. Malts, roasted malts, seaweed and some chocolate in the aroma. Medium sweetness, somewhat bitter and slightly salty. Interesting beer.
3.4Bottle from Cheers Liquor Store, Todmorden. Dark reddish-brown with next to no head. Includes some lovely dark malts, some roasted and some sweet and the seaweed influence although light, is evident.
3.1Bottle from Hops in a Bottle.
Pours very dark brown, almost black, single finger tan coloured head. Aroma of roasted malts, touches of caramel and chocolate too. Taste is much the same but with some weird saltiness. The beer starts sweet and ends salty, odd.
3.5330 ml - Dark almost black appearance similar to a porter, chocolate aromas with a slight smooth (slight fizz) palate.
