3.3Overall this was a decent beer, very sweet and almost candy like. Poured a deep red with little head retention
3.4Deep red with small light tan head. Aroma caramel, brown sugar, slightly fruity. Full body, a little alcohol, syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet malty flavor, minimal hops, some roasted malt and dark fruits. Really a little too sweet but still works pretty well.
3.6On draft at the Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival, Falls Church VA. Vintage 2010. Pours a clear dark amber with an off white head. Aroma of raisin and caramel. Same in the flavors with some tart cherry notes. Medium mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Smooth finish and not too boozy.
3.922 ounce bottle into snifter, Fall 2011 bottling. Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, raisin, toast, brown sugar, light roast, brown bread, floral, light pine, and herbal earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, raisin, brown bread, light toffee, floral, light pine, light roast, and herbal earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, raisin, light roast, light toffee, floral, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor balance and complexity; though it is not as robust as I would expect for the style; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish; very smooth to sip on. Overall this is a very nice barelywine. Good balance and complexity; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
4.3Pours a surprisingly crisp mahogany with ruby edges. Inviting aroma full of malt that you’d expect from a barleywine. Really interesting flavor. Rye, raisins, cedar at first. Hops take hold for a bit, then hints of currants and cherries. Lots of warmth and heat from the 10% ABV. Each sip I’m trying to find a different flavor, and it’s there.
Take some time with this one. Savor it.
3.32012 bomber into snifter glass. Dark ruby red color with some creamy off-white head. Aroma of rich bready malt, dark fruits, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, some nuttiness and some alcohol. Taste is rich and sweet, adding some roasty notes and light bitterness. Full body, low carbonation, strong, creamy, somewhat syrupy with a clean dry finish. Lower hoppiness and more sweetness than my other barleywines to date but a decent sipper.
3.3Fresh from tap. An overall okay american barleywine with a slightly over-bitter aroma and bite. Dark orange/red pour with thin, off-white head. Not-too-bad slightly hoppy aroma.
3.6It pours ruby red with a thin white head that leaves minimal lacing. The aroma is robust with rich malts. The taste is a little off kilter. It’s smooth and malty up front but finishes with a bite and maybe a touch of hops? Kind of a weird balance. Maybe the description is right as it could age well and possibly balance out. Nevertheless, it smell and looks very appeasing. Certainly has potential with a little bit of tweaking.
3.7Gift from S.J. A really solid Barely Wine. Nice brown sugar and nutty aroma, with hints of dark fruit. A nice full and rich finish. Very Enjoyable once it warms up.
3.81/5/13. 22oz bottle, vintage 2011, off the shelf in Albany, GA: where beer goes to die. Rich brown pour, clear with lots of red under the light, under a small khaki head that fades to a ring and laces lightly. Rich, dark fruits and brown sugar in the aroma with molasses, toffee, and maybe a touch of alcohol... quite nice, actually. Rich, sweet flavor at first with dark fruits, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar with a secondary layer of roast and a touch of dryness. Actually really digging this, aside from a touch of oxidation.
3.4bomber (vintage 2012) - pours clear and dark amber with thin tan head and spotty lacing. Nose is caramel, alcohol and brown sugar. Flavor adds barley and toffee. Very sweet. fairly boring for the style, but still a good beer overall. light bitterness on the finish. sweet malty beverage with high ABV.
3.622 ounce bottle, 2011 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a clear reddish/brown color with an inch tan head that stayed around for a while. There’s a small amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet and malty, the brew smells like caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit and some toffee. It tastes like bready malt, caramel, dark fruit (figs, plums) and a bit of toffee. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit creamy with moderate carbonation. I think it’s a solid brew, I liked it.
3.7Approximately 2 oz. sample of unaged 2012 vintage poured from bottle at beer class on Nov. 29, 2012 at Total Wine & More in Chantilly/Fairfax, VA.
Clear, mahogany with sm khaki head and very good lacing.
Aroma of caramel, toffee, raisin bread dark fruit and yeast.
Taste of raisin bread, alcohol, malt, dark fruit and port.
Full body and low/medium carbonation.
3.6Tap. Pours clear brown with thin, creamy beige head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is caramel and toast malts, figs, dates, brown sugar, floral hops, woody notes and mixed nuts. Flavor is sweet malt forward with dark fruit ester, woody notes and some earthy hops; dry finish. Medium/full body and low carbonation.
3.7Tap. Pours clear brown with a medium, creamy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is caramel and cookie malt, dates and plums, earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is raisins, figs, and prunes with heavy malt, medium hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
2.9A really hearty beer. Thick dark color, yet not murky. Very strong warm alcoholic taste. You can really taste the boubon flavor. Not much lacing or head when poured in a chilled glass, but tastey none the less. I’m gonna leave out the bull about all the flavored elements. It tastes like bourbon flavored rich beer. I prefer weyerbachers insanity, but this is good also.
3.1Bottle. Pours an extremely dark amber with almost no head. Smells awfully alcohol-laden, though it doesn’t taste that way. Malty flavor, though it has some wine elements like it should. Interesting...
3.8Pours a near black brown with a light foamy head. Aroma of black licorice and syrup. Taste is sweet and syrupy with a slight hop bite that actually allows this to finish fairly clean.
3.12009 vintage, back when the Clipper City name was still use here and there. Heavy caramel and booze aroma Usual light brown/dark tan of the style, and no head to speak of at this point. Starchy bittersweet taste not unlike chewing on roasted barley malt dry. Obvious high content. Viscous and syrupy, almost difficult to drink. I often say strong beers of different types age well, but I am lying. Barlywines, however, really can pass the three year threshold.
3.72011 bomber from Bruisin Ales. Pours very dark and ruddy with a passing creamy beige head. Rich, warm malty aroma. A little alcohol. Not much else for me. Full bodied. Flavor is lots of malt, brown sugar, a little heat, and something like medium dark fruit. In the finish everything thins to mostly alcohol. Much like a fine cognac. Very laid back. Great sipper.
3.2Mild walnut aroma with pineapple accents. Tea colored, thin head. Full bodied and tangy. Cherry flavor, a little boozy. Finishes malty. Decidedly not rustic, quite fruit forward.and sweet. Low hop presence
3.32008. Orange-brown, oxidized malt, sweet, alcohol. Flavors of caramel, papery oxidation. Too old really.
3.2Dark burgundy pour with a barely-there head. Sweet and malty but not a lot else going on.
3.322oz bottle, 2011 vintage. Dark ruby clear color, with a slight purple tint. Thin khaki head fading to minimal, good lace. Crisp and light carbonation, dry texture. Bitter and boozy alcohol bit, detracts from the drinkability, but this does improve as it warms. Sweetness in the booziness, too. Dark fruit, malty hops, and booze warmth in the aroma. Nice date notes. Not the best barleywine, but still satisfying enough.
4.3aroma, not really much, color, dark no head, little cabornation, taste thats the hightlight very rich maltyness throughout, overall, Ive yet to try with some age on it, need to revist
Just did last nite!, on a 2009 bottle, aroma, very malty, as before was not as much, age really adds to this beer!, color, dark copper color, hardly any head, taste, ture English Barley wine!, malt forward, and mild, smooth, hops are not tasteable, overall, Age really makes this Barleywine better! alot better, Awesome brew!
3.2Poured from the bottle, a dark red/amber color, aromas of sweet raisins, caramel and toffee. Little booze in the taste, followed by caramel and toffee flavors.
2.7Courtesy of jrob21. Aroma had a sweet candy to it along with some bread notes. Dark red body with off white head that disapated ratherquickly. Had more of candy sweetness to it anlong with some thick lacker that was like cough syrup going down the hatch. Good sipping brew and cool bottle. 2011 should of aged this one might of been better
2.6Bottle. Pours dark mahogany with very little head. Aroma is fruity with a hint of raisins. Flavor is a mix of fruity sweetness and a hard to define bitterness. Mouthfeel is thin but adequate. A metallic alcohol finish ruins the experience of this one. Would not recommend.
3.3Pours deep amber to brown with almost no head. Pretty straightforward barleywine with a caramel/toffee being the biggest flavor. A touch of alchohol. Nice mouthfeel, but not very complex.
3.4Bottle shared by Chris at Hophead #5 annual tasting. Small brownish pour into my tulip glass. Aroma was sweet caramelized sugars. Taste was very sweet for a barley wine. Medium body.
