3.7 Picked up the last 2012 bottle sitting in a hidden corner of my favorite bottle shop this AM. After I chilled it I poured into a dimpled mug (don’t judge me). The aroma has delightful vanilla sweet notes. Taste follows. Not a lot to disagree with here. Just some good barleywine. It took me a while to learn to appreciate an aged barleywine. Malts are not something I appreciated early in my craft beer experience. But this is delicious. I’ll look for the next generations and stock up my cellar. An excellent aged brew.
4.3 Bomber. Murky reddish brown pour with a soapy head. Amazing aroma of vanilla, bourbon, wood, and maybe a bit of chocolate? So good!
4.3 Bottle sampled at a tasting. From notes. Boozy with vanilla, caramel and oak. I would gladly drink this again.
3.6 650 ml bottle This was a fine barrel aged release and worth trying once. This particular bottle had about two years on it and has held up reasonably well. The next time I buy one though I may just drink it fresh. If you are a fan of the style pick up an affordable and relatively accessible bottle. Aroma / Appearance - The bottle poured with lots of sediment. A thin short lived head collapsed downwards. Thick caramel, vanilla, and chocolate are like a sundae in a glass. Dense and chewy the ABV is hardly subtle. Flavor / Palate - The taste of warm maple syrup matches the thick chewy mouthfeel. Warm hits of midrange bourbon sweep across the palate before the oaky finish. This is heavy - one or two pours was enough for me. That said it was also a great deal at about $7.99 and something worth trying again.
3.7 Dark brown with medium-small tan head. Aroma caramel/malt, bit of wood, dark fruits. Full body, some alcohol but pretty smooth anyway. Flavor sweet, brown sugar, some oak, dark fruit, vanilla. Warm off dry finish. Nice.
3.8 22oz bottle shared by Brad. Really nice caramel, smooth malt tones. Classic English Barleywine notes. Big oak tones. Easy drinking and quite balanced for the style. Nice.
3.7 2012 bottle pours deep mahogany amber, quick tan head that reduces to a cap. nose is mostly biscuit, toast, light oak, slight bourbon. taste follows this theme as the bourbon is more subtle... wish it had a little more. oak is very present. finish lingers and the abv makes me happy.
3.6 Bottle, 2010 ed, courtesy Brigadier, thanks! Copper pour, off-white head. Little retention/lace. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, toffee. Taste is sweet, bourbon, vanilla, molasses. Palate is soft, oily, slick.
3.9 From the bottle, pours deep red with a thinner white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, smooth and alcoholic. Taste is smooth, cherries, alcohol, malt, very good beer.
3.1 Sampled on draft at Ginger Man with Ben. Pours a light amber body with thick white lacing. Aroma is sweet booze, caramel, toffee and malt. Mouthfeel is thin with notes of sweet booze, caramel malt, light vanilla and oak.
3.0 22oz bomber. Pour was a deep dark syrup color with a tan ring of head. Aroma was sweet malt, caramel and whiskey. Mouth was a bit dry with flavors of caramel and vanilla. The finish was very boozy. Not bad.
1.7 On tap at the bocktown, should stay below decks for a few years before they tap this again. Just a clean simple aroma. Big raw American wannah bee barly wine with shades of whisky in there. These course BW wannah beez are simply that. There is a slight hint of harvies in there I think but it may be my imagination. Almost triggers that gag reflex. does not hide alky well. cloying finish
4.2 Vanilla and malt aromas, not overpowering but pleasant. Dark amber hue with off-white, small bubbles in the head. Taste is winelike but malty with vanilla and roasted notes.
3.2 I’m not a huge fan of bourbon flavored beer so this one wasn’t for me but it was still made well, slight burned malt and dark fruit flavor with a whiskey finish
3.3 Pours a muddy reddish brown. Syrupy vanilla and a big raisin flavor. Nice barley wine here with the ageing adding to and not overpowering the overall experience. Bourbon alcohol aroma. A bit of muted spy sauce ont he flavor definitely a sipping kind of beer and would do much better on a cold witty night as opposed to the sunny warm spring day we are having here today.
3.4 Cask at aPORKalypse at alewife. Deep brown color. Sweet. Bourbon taste. Smokey with a hint of syrup. Very good
3.7 On tap Blackthorn Pub Holly,MI... surprisingly pale colored and clear for a barley wine with a small whitish head; this beer is striking due to the unique combo of oak, whiskey, and wine. All flavors assert themselves without overpowering each other. Crisp and non-cloying on the finish this is an outstanding BW.
4.0 Bottle pours a clear reddish-brown with brief bubbly white head. Aroma sweet malts with faint oak and a hint of sourness. Taste sweet caramel/toffee malts with slight bourbon and vanilla. Oaky finish. Palate full with alcohol burn, could be just a little thicker but did not detract. Alcohol evident. This is not particularly complex but does a nice job - straightforward barleywine with a nice proportion of bourbon and quite a bit of oak.
4.2 Pours a clear auburn, with a small, but lacy buttered-popcorn head. Nose is extremely sweet with vanilla bean, butterscotch, caramel, tobacco, and with lighter notes of earthier malts, and bourbon. The taste starts strong and sweet of butterscotch, caramel, and transitions into bourbon, and lightly toasted toffee. Body is medium, but slightly chewy toward the finish.
3.8 Pours an almost clear amber with a small off white head. Strong aromas of bourbon in the nose, along with some fig. Taste is not overly sweet, but heavy on the bourbon. Not boozy though, just bourbon-y. Alcohol hidden, not hot. Light carbonation. Very nice. Buzzed quick.
3.6 Bomber into snifter glass. deep reddish-brown color with thin white head that disappears into a ring. Aroma of bourbon, oak, caramel, dark fruits and some vanilla. Taste is the aroma, adding some spiciness, chocolate and alcohol. Full body, low carbonation smooth with somewhat boozy finish. Warming and complex. IMHO much better then their regular Barleywine!
3.6 El bombero del diablo (2012) - pours murky amber with yellowish-brown head and it lacing. Nose is bourbony and sugary. Flavor adds alcohol, caramel, and rye. Sweetnd quite so. Apple/pear aftertaste. Dominated by the bourbon, but it might reveal more goodness as it warms. Bitter (unripe almond) taste in the back of the throat. Provides a literary buzz (Naked Lunch movie reference).
3.7 Tap at clubhouse. Pours light brown thin lacing. Aroma of fruit oak and vanilla. Taste is stick bourbon medium body.
4.0 Bomber pours a hazy burnt orange with a think brown head. Aromas of bourbon oak and some bread and a bit of yeast. Flavor is semi sweet with a boozy oaky flavor. Body is medium to full with a good aged oak finish
4.0 Poured a clear dark chestnut orange (like a strong iced tea). There was a thin light beige head that dropped to just a film rather quickly. The aroma was primarily bourbon along with vanilla and dark fruits. The beer had a nice silky thicker texture and a nice bourbon flavor right up front along with the alcohol warmth. There is a nice sweetness of raisins, brown sugar and molasses to balance the alcohol flavor. The overall flavor mellows well into the finish with just a light alcohol bite and a big alcohol warmth. This was great for a cold snowy winter night.
3.7 Deep reddish pour with a white head that fades to a ring with sticky lacing left behind. Big bourbon, oak, and vanilla on the nose. The taste is oak, vanilla, bourbon, and a hint of dark fruit and brown sugar. Pretty hot, think I’ll lay the rest down for a couple of years.
3.6 Pours a dark brown with a very thin head. The aroma is quite subdued with just a bit of wood and some caramel. The flavor is quite nice, the caramel comes through with a good bit of hoppy bitterness. The after taste is quite nice and lasting.
