Heavy Seas Mutiny Fleet Big DIPA (-2012)

Big DIPA – Double IPA

Hops: Centennial, Amarillo

Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit

ABV: 10.6%

IBU: 75.5

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

3.7 Big earthy aromas with notes of citrus, caramel, and booze. Pours clear deep copper color with off-white head and no lacing. Taste is fairly sweet with caramels popping thru with a nice bitter bite on the back end. Average to flatish carbonation with a long dry finish. Overall, a good, big beer. Nice balance, strong flavors, and abv hidden well.
4.1 Cask at GBBF 2011, Day 4. Pours clear, rich amber with a small, white head. Heavy malt and caramel nose, with dense citrus hops. Big sweet flavor, sugar notes, toast, light booze. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm finish, lots of sugar, resinous and oily hops, mild pine and citrus. Really good beer. An enjoyment.
3.4 Draught at Maddy’s, Washington. Clear dark golden with a small head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel) and hoppy (grassy). Flavor moderate sweet, heavy bitter, some alcohol. Almost full body.
3.6 22oz bottle. Clear amber large lasting fluffy beige head. A bit barleywine-ish on the nose - solid grain malt, pretty heavy resin and dry leafy bitterness, a bit of an alcohol burn - nice balance, if big (7+). Taste - same, but tons of fruit, and even maltier than expected - big, grainy, boozy - and dry. Average body, a bit syrupy, mildly carbonated -a fairly boozy long finish. I have had the bottle for a while, it has stood up nicely.
4.0 Bottled as a bomber. Served in a pint glass. Appearance: Medium amber color, 1/2 inch off-white foam head, decent lacing Aroma: Floral Taste: fairly harsh alcohol taste, not too bitter, somewhat sweet. Palate: Medium/thick mouth feel Overall: Good Beer, only complaint was the stronger-than-expected alcohol taste. A relatively inexpensive & good tasting Double IPA though.
3.7 Bottle at Uno’s in Neshaminy. Remember very little, except that the alcohol is more noticeable than the commercial description suggests.
3.6 Pint from The Lackman in Cincinnati. Pours a cloudy deep orange color with a small off-white ring. Tons of fruit in this- grapefruit, orange, melon, pineapple- with caramel malts, pine resin, and some floral notes. Medium-bodied, with a chewy, fruity mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Big DIPA. Too much for my brother. I liked it.
3.6 Cask@GBBF2011. Golden amber colour with a small head. Aroma is fruits, some bready malts, mild sweet malts as well as some grassy notes. Flavour is quite much the same with also a bunch of toffeeish notes.
3.5 Bottle shared by TexasJeep. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Nose is of concentrated orange rind. Taste is of citrus which is overpowered by malt. Mouthfeel is resinous and bitter.
4.0 Orange pour with off white head and lace. Bread and resiny aroma. Sweet caramel, resin, and abv. Medium full bodied with good carbonation. Nice beer.
3.7 I’ve slated biscuit malt in the past but this one showed me how its used right as a backdrop for hoppy assertiveness which comes in the form of two of my favorite hops. But, I swear the hop quotient is more IPA than DIPA and the malts deliver the high abv. This one has a slightly tea-like finish to it which kind of dampers the exuberance. Picked this up at Chips in OBX.
4.2 19 July 2011, tap. orange/amber, clear, no bubbles. big white grapefruit citrus hops and sugary alcohol. med/full body and slightly fizzy. big, slightly aggressive alcohol bite. great sugary grapefruit hops. amazing!
3.7 On cask at Frisco Grille. Amber color with no head. Fruit and Citrus aroma. Caramel malt flavor with fruit notes. Citrus hop finish. Being on cask it was flatter than the bottled version.
3.8 22oz poured into a pint glass. Pour is a clear amber color with a bisquit colored head. Aromas are subtle for such a big beer, but there are definite malty notes and some hoppiness on the nose. Taste is a very malt forward DIPA with some bitterness, but mostly boozy and malt is what I get. The hops could be more forward to bitter the finish. Not much of a finish, quite abrupt. Overall and OK DIPA, but many better ones are out there.
4.0 Bottle split with mcberko. Pours ruby red/orange with a thin white lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, resin, and caramel or candied sugar. Flavour of tropical fruits, lots of caramel, resin, and slight booze. Sweet and smooth to start, with a gorgeous hop finish. Full bodied and complex.
3.9 22 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp, split with Matts_Property, pours hazy dark golden orange with a small off-white head. Aroma of resinous hops, floral notes, light grapefruit (and maybe other fruits), backed by a big caramel malt backbone. Flavour brings out some candied sugar to begin with, heaps of caramel, tropical fruits, ending with pungent resinous hops. Great layers and depth in this IIPA, though maybe a little boozy on the finish. Excellent.
3.3 Good beer. Nothing out of the norm for a double IPA. Finishes kinda weak.
4.0 12oz bottle-thanks decaturstevo for sharing-pours a dissipating light tan head and hazy amber color. Aroma is resin/perfumy, dark fruit, sweet medium malt-caramel. Tase is resin/perfumy/spice hops bite, dark fruit, sweet medium malt-caramel. Slightly syrup/thick mouth feel. BW-ish.
3.6 i hate to make regional comparisons, but I’m going to be honest - Big DIPA is definitely cut from same cloth as DFH 90. This is a prime example of the big and malty sweet East Coast DIPA with hops to burn. The only real difference I taste here is the extra 1.5% ABV. Aroma, however, is a different story. I’m getting some citrus zest here, but it’s mostly boozy. Appearance is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen - lovely deep amber/brown color with head and lacing for days. Palate is nice, especially for a 10.5% beer. Would drink again.
2.9 22oz bottle from a trade with tripphop on BA. A pillowy white head rests a top a bright amber in color beer with some orange highlights. Very mild orange citrus aroma. As it warms caramel appears in the aroma, and becomes quite pronounced. Sweet caramel, some candied oranges, slight fresh orange and grapefruit, and some bitterness in the finish. Medium to heavy bodied, and really just as big as the 10% abv suggest.
2.7 Bomber shared with mattyb83. Poured a dark amber with some red hues and a slightly off white head. Aroma of caramel, more caramel, booze, and a pure orange. For a DIPA, this beer has a big mouthfeel. Sticky molasses, candied sugar, caramel, ripe orange citrus, and some juicy citrus. The palate moves from a sweet, juicy profile into a dry bitter finish. I feel like the hop profile should have been a lot brighter to help counteract the intensely sweet malt. Attempted to pair with the Trio song, "Da Da Da", but it just didn’t work.
2.2 Reviewed from notes. Poured into a tulip. Appearance is amber with a short white head and not too much lacing. The nose brings some citrus hops and a bit of a tropical character with a lot of sweetness. Some hop flavor in the taste, but this is overly sweet, taking the East Coast DIPA style to the extreme. Taste is slightly cloying. I was able to drink this but it is not at all as advertised. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-08-2010
3.3 Thanks to John for the bomber. Poured a lovely shade of orangey-amber with a sticky, tight-bubbled off-white head. The aroma picked up juicy fruits, peppery notes, and a touch of oak over syrupy molasses and fruity meat.. a tad heavy on the sugars, but aiight. The flavor opened with tangy, boozy notes, followed by mostly molasses sweetness onto the core.. deep fruity and peppery bitterness around, but again the malt bill was too dominant.. spicy and hot on the finish with a lot of residual sugars. Heavier-bodied and too sweet on the palate.. bitterness was there, but it fell behind the mats and boozage.. OK overall.
3.4 Pours an amber body with a lasting ring of tan head. Great color. Aromas of very ripe pineapple, caramel, and alcohol. Flavor is much the same. Finish has a nice bitterness and is not overly hot. Tasty, not too good for a session...it is a bit heavy for that.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a clear amber/orange with a frothy white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, caramel and orange peels. Flavor was hoppy with pine, caramel malts, citrus, orange zest and a touch of honey with a long and bitter finish.
3.7 NIce. Smooth yet quite hoppy. This sipper is working with some meat. Give this one a try certainly. Good IPA.
3.1 1/16/11. Bomber. Clearish red pour with a big fluffy lhaki head that lasts. Malty aroma that makes me think its on the old side. Sweet caramel flavor with a hint of hops but mostly malty. Probably a bit old but still nice and not overwhelmingly sweet.
3.9 Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of roasted and caramel, moderate to heavy orange for the hops, light broth for the yeast, with background notes of date, cherry, and faint nutmeg and licorice. Head is small, frothy, slightly off-white , with fair lacing and good leg, and is mostly diminishing. Color starts sparkling clear but has tiny particles and hazes up on later pours, light red. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, between oily and creamy and has a soft carbonation with a lightly astringent finish. It could’ve had a bigger finish in the flavor, but everything else about this DIPA is tasty and seems true to style.
3.7 Nice pour, foamy, thick and juicy, dark murky amber, sticky as well, very thick as can be expected, nice hop aroma, floral and citrus, bitterness is there, ABV pretty well hidden, pretty drinkable, I think one bomber is a good amount in a sitting, nice malt backbone as well, all in all we done, reminds me of some other dipas I’ve had so it doesn’t really stand out as being different but very solid none the less, not disappointed at all. One other thing to note, if it was brewed last summer this has held up surprisingly well, getting it fresh would be even better.
3.7 Appearance: clear amber with a big puffy coppery head; thick heavy and firm. Fades rocky and pocky with blotchy lace scattered about. Nose: hoppy and malty all at the same time. Orange zest, pine sap, crushed hop cones; sticky and resinous. Sweet honey with melba toast and bread crust underneath, artisanal whole grain breads. Piney and orangey hops. Blends together nicely. Palate: full and sticky with a solid backbone of malty bready sweetness. Orange honey thick and concentrated. Prickly hop cones underneath and in the back. Massive orange, pine, and hops with juices flowing down my throat with each swallow. Grassy in the finish. Sticky mouthfeel and sticky lips. Honey-tinged whole grain loaves, moist and chewy. Touch of orange peel and hop resins in the finish. Final Thoughts: overall a bit simple but overall tastetastic. She took big hops, big malts, and married them in exquisite thick sticky goodness. While the standard line of Clipper City beers haven’t underwhelmed me per say, it is their Heavy Seas line where this beer ambassador finds they truly shine. Big DIPA is no exception.
