3.3 Chewy baked bread flavor and big sweetness. A little soy sauce action and a touch of alcohol turns this one a little negative. Full bodied and long lasting sugary sweetness otherwise.
3.4 I was very lucky to obtain a bottle via gift, bro-in-law had bought a couple cheap and really didn’t like it so gave me number 2. Hazy amber, minimal head + retention. Apples and funky yeast and caramel in the nose. Very syrupy mouthfeel, a bit like a barley, but a slight tang with a bit of banana, a bit of alcohol in heat mode, and some excessive malt. Not bad at all.
3.4 Poured into a weizen glass. 3.5 A: Really aggressive pour yielded 2 fingers of barely brown head. Pretty good retention. Dark amber brown in color. Reasonably clear for being unfiltered. 4.0 S: Overload of banana. Wheat aroma comes through as well. Hint of clove. 3.5 T: Banana and clove once again. Good solid wheat backbone. Not much hops (which is fine for the style). 3.5 M: Heavy medium body. Very smooth, but a bit under-carbonated. 4.0 D: Smooth, very drinkable, and a good choice for the style. 3.6 Bottle from Ken - murky brown with brown cap, fruity tart and spicy, strong alcohol, finishes a bit messy bit good.
3.3 Bottle at Paul’s tasting. Pours a clear orange amber with a thin white head. Boozy banana, toast, and sweet malt on the nose. Big and boozy with some metallic banana flavors. Toast, and even more booze on the finish. Way too hot.
3.5 Bottle at Paul’s tasting in Hoboken. Pours cloudy caramel brown. Nose and taste of banana, yeast and wheat. Slightly boozy in the finish.
3.6 Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. Aroma: The nose has lots of sticky caramel, wheat, dark fruit (figs primarily), a slight phenol note, molasses, vanilla, and a touch of varnish. Appearance: It pours a very dark amber color with a thin, off-white head. The head fades fairly quickly, but that’s not uncommon given the ABV. Taste: The flavor is very malty with notes of raisin, dark caramel, fig, a good bit of rustic wheat, and some phenols too. Palate: Medium to rich body with lots of fine carbonation leading to a slightly fruity finish. Overall: Big and bold, this weizen bock delivers. Tasty stuff.
3.6 Ken’s bottle. Cloudy grapefruit with big bubbly head. Above verage mouthfeel. A story in bannana, and I get the yeast. Looking for more interesting in the style than a sweet bannana sundae, but still enjoyable, and I am allergic to bannanas and not a fan of their smell. Also do we need the abv s high? Good for what it is.
3.2 Pours the color of coke with a medium tan foamy head. Aroma has some sour apple and candy sugar with spice. Sweet with the heartiness of apple cider. A decent amount of heat from alcohol and some bitterness as it goes down. Not quite what I was expecting, but a decent beer nonetheless.
3.9 22 oz bottle As the collection of Heavy Seas releases spawns a new shelf in the cellar I tried to keep it at bay by opening this. My reward was an affordably priced top notch weizenbock which falls somewhere on the spectrum of beers that can comfortably be finished alone in a night. If not for the others I would be getting another bottle very soon before it disappears from the shelves. Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy caramel and bronze body was warm in the light of the hazy sunset. Whitish tufts of head floated on the top like crests of waves hitting the shoreline. Creamy and fluid it was thick without oozing. Caramel, molasses, toffee, and chocolate bring to mind a decadent dessert bar. Black licorice is the topper that adds depth without creating a muddled and confused collection of tastes. Flavor / Palate - Chocolate, caramel, molasses, and sugar cookie mix into a texture that brings to mind a harvest festival. Slightly boozy after a few sips it warms the tongue and throat. Unlike unbalanced beers it does so without overwhelming the depth. Solid and affordable this one has landed squarely on the list of "go to budget beers" if I ever need to scale back purchasing the rarer stuff at some point.
3.5 Draft at Elephant & Castle. Medium brown, clear, small tan head. Aroma of caramel, taste is malty with a decent bitter finish. Not bad.
3.5 12oz. bottle, best by date of Dec. 2010. Spicy, sweet aroma, full of caramel, dough and clove, with lighter notes of banana, licorice, toasty malt, raisin and a faint medicinal alcohol presence. Cloudy, dark amber-brown color with a fine, off-white head. Flavor profile is tangy, fruity, sweet and moderately bitter, with a spicy yeast and hop character, finishing dry and peppery with tea-like herbal tinges and mild alcohol. Mouthfeel is sharply effervescent, lightly coating and warming, body is full but not overly so. When I consumed the first of these, I drank it fairly cold and not with much care, not realizing it was 10%. As it warms, this becomes more apparent. Interesting stuff, not particularly refined but certainly has some likable features.
3.5 Pours a brownish color with an off white head. Smells instantly of dates, plums, molasses, and apples. Taste is fairly sweet. I taste apples, molasses and malty goodness in that order. The finish is with what some people might call "dark" fruits (plums and grapes). Overall, this beer is actually quite good. And the label on this beer is pretty different. Good stuff.
3.6 Poured a very dark brown with a bubbling off-white head. Aroma is quite fruity for a weizen bock. Wheat also in the aroma with caramel and some yeast. Taste is quite good! Very similar to dark wheat beers from Germany. Good wheat flavors with some banana and fruit. Alcohol is noticeable, but it isn’t too bad. Finish is slightly sweet with fruit. Enjoyable and tasty!
3.3 Cloudy brown appearance with an off white head. Aroma is yeast and a little fruity. Slightly musty but not in an unpleasant way. Flavor is strong yeast with a sweet, slightly alcohol burn to it. Rather nice but not quite amazing.
3.3 Bottlle. Pours deep brown/ruby with a big tan head. Flavor of soy sauce, sticky buns, caramel, and booze. Not impressed.
3.1 Pours a clear ruby the a decent off-white head. Smells like soy sauce on top of cheesecake that was meant to be refrigerated but was left out for 2 days. Tastes like a 2L of creme soda from Wal-Mart was inserted into your stomach. Later it tastes like someone was served peanut brittle for dessert with soy sauce dizzled over it. Much later it will tastes like tea that been teabagged into some septic water.
3.9 Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours very dark amber with a small tan head. Smells like barley wine - brown shugga! Near full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is confusin - brown sugar, hop, and something yeasty/spicey? I can’t find the words. It is really sharp flavored and delicious. Don’t hesitate to try this.
3.6 I liked this beer especially because I picked up the four pack for 6 bucks at the Lighthouse in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Not only that but for the 10% being well mask and a yummy dopplebock for that matter.
4.0 Great beer, I’ve had before and I keep coming back, I actually let this one sit in the dark for a year. I would recommend this to any beer drinker, tasty and invigorating.
3.7 Hang 10 was from a cask and it was a novel choice, but disappointing in the end. The color is amber brown. The smell is of caramel and over-ripe bananas. The taste is similar to the smell and the sweetness is almost overwhelming. The finish is smooth and the sweetness mellows; however, I would compare this to some of the non-carbonated wort I’ve made during home-brewing.
3.4 Bomber shared with some friends. Muddy orange pour, opaque. Aroma was yeasty, some spice, orange and booze. Flavors followed suit with a tangy sweet finish. Alcohol was actually well masked.
4.1 A brown pour with small white head (much like ice tea). A nice malty aroma filled with wheat, raisin, clove, and a slight hint of vanilla. This full body brew is sweet with soft carbonation and a slick texture. It finishes semi-sweet with alcohol warmth.
3.8 Very dark purple, darker than most doppelbocks. Aroma and flavor of sweet prunes and ripe meat. Sour chewy caramel malt. More like a dubbel with the body of a quad. Surprisingly good, but not as easy to drink as most doppelbocks. Bottle from Stop and Shop, Miami.
4.0 A- Translucent medium colored beautiful red/brown body. Thick foamy off-white head dwindles slowly to 1/2 finger. Leaves behind plenty of lacing in the glass. S- Citrus, spices and yeast upfront in the smell. Dark fruits and alcohol in the background that can be noticed much more as it warms. T- Typical weizen taste. Lots of citrus, spice and banana up front. Dark fruit and alcohol are noticeable but remain in the background. Finish is clean with yeast lingering until the next sip. P- Medium carbonation and smooth yeasty body. Goes down smooth and easy. O- The alcohol is quite noticeable in this brew. Its an enjoyable, slow drinker. At 10% ABV its hard to have a few of these but its something nice to start with. Flavor and character aren’t as strong as in other high ABV brews-but this is still a good one. 3.3 pours brown with small head...aroma of spice, clove, wheat and banana..flavor is typical, a spicey banana bread-like liquid, finishing with dark fruit, chocolate and alcohol burn
3.5 Pours a rich brown color with fruit and nutmeg aromas. The wheat is prominent and possibly too much for my tastes. Fruit and spice remind of mulled cider.
3.8 Dark brown color with tints of red and orange. The taste is a little hoppy and somewhat fruity. The ABV% isn’t too overpowering, it goes down pretty smooth.
3.4 $2.50 / single 12oz bottle Okay...something a little different for me. Not a big fan of the aroma and taste, which are very similiar, but I have to acknowledge this is well executed. The flavors are growing on me, but what is real scary is the alcohol this hides. I’m glad I tried, but not a re-buy for me. *How fuckin’ odd is this? I just re-purchased this beer, for the second time in my life, exactly a year from my first rating. I guess I said I would never buy this again, but here I am drinking a bomber of it a year later. This beer garners a slightly better rating from me, but it is a pretty big cloying mess.
3.3 Clouded amber pour with a tan head that went away. Aroma of malt, banana and clove. Taste was alcohol, cloves, wheat and spices. I am glad I came across this beer in a pick a 6 selection. Good enough to try others by Clipper City.
