Smoke On The Water is a rich and complex porter. The subtle smokey flavor comes from the use of smoked malt. Try it with anything that’s been cooked on a grill or smoker to compliment the flavor.

2.9In short: A very, very simple sugar black beer with a hint of smoke. Nothing special
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed approximately 3 months after purchase. Bottle from BA trading buddy Heath.
The look: Black body topped by a very small tan head
In long: Nose has roast, hard candies and only light smoky notes reminiscent of burning paper. Taste has a lot of sugary dark malts, black jelly beans, dark grapes, soft liquorice candy, a bit smoke (still like burnt paper), some tobacco leafs. Almost none of the usual coffee/chocolate. To say this beer was not complex would be an understatement. It was inoffensively easy to drink, the sweetness was tolerable and the alcohol was well hidden. But overall it was a very forgettable sweet dark beer. Named after a classic Deep Purple song, I love that song, that song is like music to my ears.
3.2Appearance: very dark brown, nearly black with a short mocha head and tiny rings of lace. Aroma: chocolate, caramel, some coffee, brown sugar and licorice. Taste: chocolate, coffee, caramel malts, hint of wood and a tiny bit of ash/smoke. Finish: malty and slightly on the crisp side for a porter, with just a hint of smokiness. Notes: Honestly, I barely got any smoke at all. Seemed much more like a traditional porter. As far as that goes, it was a very good porter. As far as smoked porters go, it doesn’t hold a candle to the Stone or Great Divide smoked porters.
3.8Bottle. Deep, dark brown with a frothy tan head; good lacing. Aroma is dark fruit, brown sugar, roasted malt, and a hint of smoke. Flavor is roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation. Finishes slightly bitter with a great smoke aftertaste. Great beer.

3.9Pours as dark a black as I’ve ever seen with a small dark brown head which dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma isn’t very large, some sweetness and a faint liquorice. Taste is very good, quite subtle and very well balanced. Begins with a flavor similar to the liquorice aroma but without the sweetness, then turns into a very nice beery maltiness from the beer being a porter, and finishes with a perfectly not overpowering smokey malt flavor that is full bodied and leaves you wanting another sip. Very impressive beer
3.8Dark pour with a light tan head, good lacing. Bready aroma. Sweet malt flavor with a good medium thick mouthfeel that melts into a smokiness that is not overwhelming. Finishes slightly bitter.
3.6Very nice. Dark brown, almost black, beer with a thick, off-white head. Strong aromas of peat, and dark coffee. Tastes of dark chocolate/coffee, mixed with roasted barley, and subtle smokiness. This beer is sweeter than other smoked beers, but it works. Bittersweet finish, velvety smooth. Very enjoyable.
3.4Bomber from Chevy Chase in DC. Very dark brown color with a small light tan head. Smoky and roasty aroma with a chocolatey earthiness. The flavor has a medium level of smoke, well-balanced with a roasty porter/stout base. Medium-plus bodied with medium-low carbonation. Pretty solid smoked porter.
3.6Bomber. Great porter. The smoked aroma is mild and covered by chocolate but really comes out in the taste / swallow. Full body, smooth, -- excellent palate. I’m not a huge fan of smoked styles so I look forward to trying the porter without, if available.
3.6Pours dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of dark fruits, sugar and a hint of smoke. Not much smoke flavor. Raisin and sugar flavors with some roasted malts. Medium body with minimal carbonation. A nice porter that’s a bit too sweet for me.
3.7Tap. Pours black with a medium, creamy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light smoke, dark chocolate and roast malt, light spicy hops, and dark fruit notes. Flavor is wood, smoke, dark malt, bitter hops and malt with a dry finish. Medium-full body, medium warmth and carbonation.
3.4Good beer. Nothing more then sweetness in aroma. Taste is malty sweetness with roast flavors and a light smoke finish.
3.5cask sample at The Decatur Beer Festival on 10/15/11. brown pour with a small tan head. light smoke nose with a sweet roast. very sweet body with residual sugars... ash finish with dark malts.
3.6Pours dark brown with a lingering light brown head. Smells of roasted malt, some smoky undertones, chocolatey. Tastes roasty and sweet with a milky chocolate finish. More smoke would be nice on this one.
3.8Medium smoke in aroma and taste. Almost black, with reddish tints. Modest head and average body. Sweeter than most of smoked brews that I have tried.
3.8Bottle. Pours black with a nice fluffy tan head that left spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and faint smoke. Flavor was smooth and creamy with dark chocolate, molasses, coffee, roasted malts, caramel and smoke. A decent smoked brew
3.4bottle. notes of sweet milk chocolate, touch of molasses, and some light meaty smoke character. good, if a bit too sweet.
3.622 oz. bottle shared by lushawn right around the time the big Friday night bachelor party tasting was slowing down. Thanks, Shawn! Pours an opaque brown with a tan ring for a head. Notes of light smoke, roasted malts, coffee, milk sugar, and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, rich mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Maybe my palate was shot by this point, but the smoke was pretty light in this. Good beer.
3.9Bomber from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a decent mocha head.
Aroma: Rich dark malts, coffee and chocolate, the smoke is Scotch-like, a wee metallic and bright note, molasses and licorice notes, a bit dusty and ashen, a bit of alcohol, some light fruity notes, pretty big stuff.
Palate: Medium+ body, full, fine, soft effervescence, silky.
Flav.: A bit more smoke than the nose, darker, deeper malts, lots of molasses, dark chocolate, black coffee, a little licorice, some berry-like fruitiness, big; sweet with fair bitterness, some alcohol and a long, inky, deep malt finish with some smoke.
A pretty big Smoked. Yarrrr.
3.822oz bottle served in a tulip. Pour is deep cola with three fingers of dark kaki head; retention and lacing are above average on this brew. Nose is smoke, roasted malt, rain water, wet cement, and a hint of dark chocolate. Taste is smoke and roasted malt up front, and then this is joined by dark chocolate covered raisons. This concoction ends with a lingering smoky dark chocolate covered raison. This is not the most diverse smoked porter I’ve come across, but it is very tasty and quite solid. I really believe I could put sixtle after sixtle of the Mutiny Fleet seasonal beers on tap and be a satisfied craft beer enthusiast; these guys just bring solid offering after solid offering to the table!
3.5Bottle 650 ml
Aroma mocha chocolate sweetness with mild smoke hints, Alcohol non existent at this strength! 7+
Appearance dark-brown with extra large frothy beige brown top. Fine lace. 4+.
Flavor and Palate : medium full bodied. Bitterness with smoky hints , note of alcohol. Very drinkable blend even if simplistic in approach. Nice brew.
3.1Bottle from smoke tasting at drowland’s: more of a light smoke vibe in this one. porter-esque. finishes dry. 6.2
3.522 oz bottle. Dark brown with a tan haze. Nose is mild smoke and chocolate, maybe some grape. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is chocolate, grass and lightly bitter smoke; kind of oily. Pretty good if you feel like a smoked.
4.7One of my favorite offerings from Heavy Seas, not as smokey as the name would imply but a top end porter. I’ve had it on draft and bottle and have a few in my cellar. If you like Porters this is a must try.
3.422 oz bottle
Trying to thin down my collection of Mutiny Fleet beers I grabbed this from the shelf. It’s not quite as smoky as I was expecting but was a decent value and on par with most of the other Heavy Seas beers.
Aroma / Appearance - The deep black body and rich mocha head gives this more presence than a beer of its caliber deserves. Looking world class it raises expectations - at least until you raise it to your nose. At that point reality sets in that you drinking an excellent beer but not that will set the world on fire. Raspberries, blackberries, black coffee, and sweetness permeate the air in a way that does not feel totally cohesive.
Flavor / Palate - Carbonated with a trace bitterness the main characteristic is a dry fruitiness run through dregs of a black coffee pot. Straddling the line between thick and thin reasonably well there is little to complain about but also little to get overly excited about. The pepper undertones are distracting at times unlike the cola and iced coffee contributions. Overall this is decent enough that I would consider buying more but not so great I feel the need to hoard several in the cellar.
3.1Pours a barney black, medium head, low lacing .. . light roast and simple black malts, but almost no smoke, just light whiffs . .. a bit thin too, i lost interest when no smoke was detected ... . No no kind sir, you cannot fire me for I do not work here... I did bring my resume though...
3.6bottle - Pours black with a small light tan head. The aroma is full of sweet milk chocolate and also some mild smoke. The flavor is of sweet chocolate, roast malt, lactose, and subdued smokiness. It’s very sweet and the 8% abv isn’t noticeable at all. This brew is smooth and creamy. It’s good but needs more smoke, in my opinion.
3.5bottle someone shared at the Black Sunday BA Tasting in Houston. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is of menthol and smoke. Taste is of chocolate and smokey malt. Sort of cola-like. Mouthfeel is thin.
4.7Rich aroma is smoky with strong tones of sweet chocolate, molasses and quality coffee and hints of licorice and caramel. It pours a warm deep brown with a fairly thick fine-bubbled tan head. Delightful, smoky flavor has tones of caramel, chocolate, toffee and molasses with a bit of coffee. Texture is silky smooth and on the thick side, and leaves a nice tingle.
2.822oz bomber poured into my Darkness glass...Light black with some decent tan head, ok retention, better lacing...Weird aroma that is super sweet on the front with a small smokey finish. Very sweet chocolate syrup with vanilla, just not the right combination...Boring and off taste as well, sweet chocolate syrup with a hint of ashy smoke.
This is just off the mark in every way, don’t bother.
