Heavy Seas Powder Monkey

Heavy Seas Powder Monkey

At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

1.9 Pretty sweet and malty. Not really my thing. Drinks kind of heavy and sugary.
3.1 On tap at ATR Bethesda as "American Tap Room Ale." Nice dark amber with medium head. Nose is floral and some citrus. Taste is malty, with again citrus and spices. Good bitter finish in there.
3.2 Member with thin rimming Lacy white head; aroma is malty hint of grain; flava is blend of malt and yeast sweetness slight hint of cherry; feels light to medium and fizzy; finishes mildly bitter hoppy
3.8 i like it. the sour mash and lower hop flavor the beer is nicely malty unpretensious and quenching. it is flavorful and leaves you wanting more. although it seems something is missing i think its just my jaded tastebuds learning to appreciate again. old ale character with easy booze that you cant even tell. big old flavorful session.
2.6 OK for style, meaning this is properly boring but easy to drink. Dark amber pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Some mash malt. Some light citrus peel, but not super well integrated. Tap at Rosslyn brewpub.
3.1 Cask @ Albion. Murky dark amber with medium sized beige foamy head, doughy aroma, sweetish taste, low carbonation, thin body, long bitter finish. Typical bitter.
3.5 An interesting pale ale. Has flavor of banana okay but not a pale ale but a pretty good beer.
3.3 Farbe dunkel orange. Geruch malzig, leicht fruchtig. Im Geschmack dann Lollinoten. Sehr orangig.
2.8 Geruch relativ schwach, aber hauptsächlich malzig. Geschmack ein bisschen in Richtung Cider, leicht säuerlich mit Hopfenaroma und ein bisschen Apfel.
3.6 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/2/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a nice 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good robustness and balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very solid English pale ale. All around good robustness and balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
3.2 Bottle. Dark burnt orange. Malt forward with light pine, lemon, and a lot of caramel. Solid, but nothing special.
3.3 Orangey brown pour from bottle. Bit of hops and a little malt but otherwise uneventful.
3.2 Bronze clear ale, touch of caramel sweetness and bitter pine resin finish, decent but not my style
3.6 Tasted on tap in a mini Willybecher glass at the 2015 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Festival. It poured a clear deep amber colour with beige foam and lace. Very traditional English Best Bitter traits all-around: definitely malt-forward, caramelly, hint of toffee with nice citrusy and earthy hop balance. Medium body and carbonation, mineral complexity in the mouthfeel (chalk, gypsum?), lingering malty aftertaste which eventually finished with a dry snap. Pretty good stuff.
2.7 Overall good beer with no negatives. But the taste doesn't stand out. Will drink again maybe
3.6 Pours a darker orange gold, almost brown color with off-white head. Loght pine, citrus, and bready cereal notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes balanced.
3.1 Old rating. Pale brown. Biscuit body, spice, floral hops, crisp and better. Okay English style pale.
3.6 Pours copper with white head. Citrus aroma with biscuit malt and floral spice. Flavor is dry caramel malt with biscuit notes followed by citrus & floral hops. Really nice English pale ale. Could throw a few of these back.
3.7 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Aroma- Malt and fruit with some hops, pretty good. Appearance- A nice light brownish color that has a small white head. Taste- Has a nice sweet flavor that is followed by the malt and hops. Palate- This is a light-to-medium bodied beer with light carbonation. Overall- A really good English Pale Ale, not much love on the beer sites. but I quite enjoyed it
2.9 Soapy lemon zest nose. Cloudy amber, medium head nice lace. Dry orange and malt. Harsh fizzy mouthfeel.
2.8 Pours a clear copper with a thin soapy head. Weak hop aromas. Flavor is a bit dull as well, some hop bite but very weak. Not impressed.
2.8 Fairly basic for a pale ale. Tastes more like a lager with some subtle hop additions. Very thick pale ale, how I usually like them. The aftertaste isn't bitter at all which is nice. Not offensive and It's not half bad.
3.1 Dark amber with a one finger head and modest lace. Aromas of toast, caramelized malts, honey, dark fruit and some grassy hops. Taste is similar, mostly sweet caramel and toast with only a whiff of bitters. Light to medium body, minimal carbonation, thin mouthfeel and a sweetish finish.
3.0 Thin frothy white head of fine bubbles. Light orange and citrus aroma with some light cereal grains and biscuits. Color is a dark copper. Thin palate and flavor. Tea, light roasted grains, grapefruit pith and lemon. And a rather astringent and harsh late bitterness which is making the underside of my tongue tingle. Needs more of a malt backbone to offset the bitterness. An ok but unbalanced pale ale.
3.0 cask at Mr Goodbar, OK, simple english styled pale, mild bitterness, biscuity, earthy, malty backbone. fits the style
3.1 Of the three heavy seas beers ice tries so far, this is the one so far that seems like a let down. Better than most American lagers, but otherwise I would not necessarily reach for it.
3.4 12oz bottle from Kroger in Grandview. Copper pour, thin white head. Aroma of biscuit, grain, citrus hops. Tastes of tea, grapefruit, grass, orange. Bittersweet. Nice enough.
2.8 Orange amber. Off white head and lace. Sweet, dry, citrusy, malty. $9.99/multi sixer at Wegmans, Leesburg VA
3.8 Really nice ale. Served on cask. Citrus notes. Slight bourbon flavor turning slightly sour as it warms.
3.2 Poured from a bottle golden color with a white head. The aroma is fruity and the taste is breast with some citrus overtones
