Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

3.5wow style I wouldn’t have guessed but thanks Christian, AlohaC for this. At the TTaT. Pours orange with bubbly head. Nose is sweet and caramel, with toffee candy, crazy nose. Taste is sweet and ok, great nose, ok taste.
3.912oz gem thanks to kp. Upon opening there was a small "pfft" as the cap came off. Served into my Duvel tulip glass. Pour is a deep amber/ruby with no head at all. Aroma consists of sweet fruits, booze, cherries, and burnt sugar. Flavor is extremely mellow and smooth. Sweet cherry, candy, and caramel are all present. Very enjoyable brew. I’m glad i got to try this one.
3.612 ounce bottle courtesy of beerbill. Thanks! Pours a deep hazy
red color with a thin creamy head. Average head retention and
lacing. Aroma is candi sugar, brown sugar, toffee, subtle fruity
notes and alcohol. Taste is yeast, brown sugar, candi sugar and
some cheesy notes. Subtle warming effect. Full bodied. Very
nice.
3.6Bottle 50cl.
Unclear medium amber color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, vintage, prune, cask wood, moderate alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. (220808)
1.2Bottle, i must have got the most infected bottle of all time. This ruby brown bottle was gushing when opened by the bartender at eulogy. Aroma is salt, oxidization, wet paper, and funk. Flavor, i cant even tell you 2 sips before i had to drain pour dam i was excited about this one too, anyone got a good bottle to share? seriously had consistency of almost ready jello.
3.3Courtesy SoLan. Caramel color with a thin, sparse off-white head. Mild sweet dark fruit on the aroma, some grain. General sweetness on the taste, dark fruits again, but not much of a Belgian character to it really. Pretty basic.
3.5(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Pours a very cloudy reddish with a small rough off-white head. Aroma has overripe fruits and some alcohol. Medium-bodied, sweetish overripe fruitiness and some oxidization. A little low in carbonation. Has a light underlying acidity. 220808
3.7Bottle, shared by papsoe. It pours a hazy brown body under a quite small beige head. The beer is probably past it’s prime, but still in good condition, even though there’s evident oxidation in both aroma and flavor. It has a malty, roasted aroma and flavor with dried fruits and caramel. A little sourish touch towards the finish, which is malty and caramel tasting. Full to medium body and pleasant level of carbonation. A nice beer that is hard to categorize. (080822)
3.612 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy brown with a bubbly tan head. Dense fruity and roasted malt. Loads dense fruity aromas. Fruity and dense caramel malty flavour with a lingering malty profile and a dense fruity base. Solid sweet and mild oxidised. Nice caramel and chocolate malty finish. Smooth and pleasant.
3.5reddish brown with tan head. flavor of crystal malt with some sourness mixed in. tastes like belgian sour ale. a solid if not spectacular ale
3.7Copper orange color. Honey malty aroma. Palate a bit flat. Flavor is toffee with noticiable kick followed by smooth orange and hoppy bite.
3.4Bottle at Eulogy: Poured a dark amber color with a nice sized head. The aroma was strong malts and yeast. The flavor was sweet and slightly sour. Overall, for a beer that is probably going on two years old, it is still holding its flavor and is enjoyable to drink. Glad I got to try this.
2.3Pretty forgetful. This is my 2nd or 3rd time with Heavyweight and they just haven’t done much for me. I know they’re out of business for the most part. Wasn’t sure what to make out of this beer. A Belgian Strong? The beer poured out an amberish-red color with a medium sized head. First whiffs and all I got was malt, sour malt in fact. Yeast also shows up with a bit of tobacco notes. Flavors was like a plum extract or rotted plums..I don’t know which. Alcohol and spices are also very prominent. Seemed like a dubbel somehow. A bad dubbel. Anyways, not tasty at all.
3.4Plum color with lots of yeasties in suspension. Aroma is dominated by some raisin with a bit of brown sugar and bread. Flavor is sweet and bready - lots of sugar, dark fruit, and caramel/slightly sweet candy. Thinner mouthfeel. Good and unique, but this is mediocre relative to the better Heavyweight beers that were made.
2.7July 2006 - I didn’t like it. If I knew it was supposed to be a Belgian Strong, I probably would have liked it less. This defies style...and is somewhat of a mess. Aroma smelled like sour wine. The flavor was a sour wine with sour butter. Flat mouthfeel (which I hate) and cloying. Distinctive (I’m trying to be positive), but flat out unpleasant.
3.512oz bottle, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a murky, burnt caramel color; fluffy khaki-colored head with great retention and lacing. Pleasant, mildly tart aroma showing brown sugar, bananas, and a pleasant yeastiness; very nice aroma; some wheat. A bit of hard caramel at the front, but no over-the-top oxidation; slightly tart citrus and lively carbonation at the front; medium mouthfeel; red fruits, sweet brown sugar, and some doughiness; pleasant and drinkable. Medium, citrus and brown sugar finish; tasty stuff.
3.2From a bottle. Pours a dark amber color. Aroma of sweet candied fruits, roasted malts and alittle bit of yeast. Decent brew, that seems to held up to time, since I have no idea how old this bottle is but its atleast 3 years old.
3.5Draught: Aroma of nuts, caramel malts, floral hops, and raisin. Poured amber/brown in color with a small off-white head. No lacing. Cloudy. Full of tiny particles. Not sparkling. Flavor of sweet and sour sauce and some spices. Medium body. Sticky, thin texture. Soft to average carbonation. Dry finish. Sour, but not Lambic sour.
3.5Thanks alot Beerbill this was a great belgian and boy was it strong. I got this in a trade and it had no head but a nice dark redish amber, and did have some minor laceing along the sides of the glass. The aroma is a nice sweet sugar cane and candy with roasted malt. As you take the first sip it fills your mouth with fruits, carmel malt and a nice creamy finish. I also liked the nice initial hoppy bite but faded a little more each time you take a sip.
3.1Bottle from 2003 at Euology in Philly: pours a dark redish brown with no head, aroma is sweet with hints of alcohol, taste is of dark fruit, thin moutfeel, almost a bit watery, a slightly flat taste too. Still, a pretty good brew that seems to have held up reasonably well.
3.5Had at Logan’s Oceanside beer tasting with AlohaC, and Hair, and Matt, and Ken, and Bill, and others. Bottle from alohaC. Thanks Christian! A little bit of oxidation. This bottle may be 2 yrs old. Brewery is closed. Cloudy amber color. Malty light.7,3,7,3,15:3.5

clear dark red, short lived whispy beige head, touch of lace, sweet candy malt aroma with some floral hops, creamy body, rich malt flavor, restrained sweetness, some nice fruity character of a lighter variety like grapes or apricots, light bitterness, great first beer of the weekend

3.3Bottled. Poured a deep, syrupy, murky brown with a quickly-receding off-white head and some rising carbonation. The nose first found rich, toasty English caramel, less-prominent caramel, floral notes, and candied dark fruits. Flavor was rather strong with dark frutis and toffee.. accented by some alcohol warmth.. floral and mild peppery spices too. Syrupy and sweet on the palate, with a thicker body.. some sharper alcohol and oxidization evident, but still has some life left in it.. but probably best to drink ’em soon.
3.4bottle, from trade with jasonmech77. Good aroma, sour & sweet. Initial sourness that opened up to the sweet as it warmed. Caramel, chocolate in the background. Little brandy. Dried fruit. Plum, raisin, date. Brown sugar. Get that tobacco scent I associate woth oxidation. Cloudy orangy dark brown color, small head and minor lace. Sour flavor. Oxidized with fruit, apple, pear, raisin, plum. ABV shows itself with the brandy or even a little of a spiced rum flavor. Medium body, smooth crreamy mouthfeel, bitter sour finish. Good brew, think it might be fading abit. Must of been intense fresh. Thanks for the retired brew jasonmech77.
3.1sample at DLD - Pours amber with a moderate head. It smells of sweet malts and a bit of dark fruit. The flavor was both sweet and surprisingly sour. Medium bodied and lively, this one was... interesting.
3.2sampled at DLD, pours dark amber. nose was pretty oxidized, tobacco, swweet caramel, brown sugar, plums, raisins, this was overly sweet.
3.4Sampled March 2007
Pours with a dark, burnt amber color that shows a touch of haze and a brilliant ruby color when held up to the light. The beer seemed a bit light in the carbonation department when I popped the cap, so I poured carefully to maintain the carbonation. Because of this it forms a scant, tan colored head that quickly recedes to a ring of foam. Rich, aged malt aromatics dominate the aroma. These notes are not yet wet-cardboard like, instead they add rich caramelized notes, touches of sweetened toffee, fermented cherry, fruity notes of prunes and figs and a deeply caramelized / browned crusty bread character. The aroma really makes me think of the Maillard browning with some age.
The taste is lightly sweet up front and the body is quite a bit lighter than the rich aroma would suggest. My guess is that this has lost some body with age. Some light tart notes, along with other components add to a taste sensation reminiscent of plums, a touch of kiwi, currants, figs and definitely prune notes as well. The finish has a dry, toasted grain maltiness to it that leaves a sensation of dusty barley husks lingering on in the palate.
This is certainly still quite interesting, it has certainly aged quite a bit since being released. If you like aged character in a beer I would still recommend it, though I don’t see this lasting more than another year or so before the oxidation character takes a turn for the worse.
4.112 oz bottle. Thick syrupy pour giving a deep ruddy colour and a fine off-white head. Some light suspended protein chunks. Fruity aroma, with intense sweet maltiness and a soft grape vineousness as well. Some light molasses and dark rum sweetness in the nose as well. Some soft plumminess in the nose as well. Flavour is quite sweet but well-developed, cherries and plums up front with a bit of sweet caramel, grape and figgy sweetness. Drinks like an English barleywine with sweet plummy malts, a bit of sherryish oxidized notes on the back and a full sweet mouthfeel without ever losing balance. A lovely refined brew.
3.4Bottle...dark caramel color with some redness...the alcohol scent is blanketed by some syrupy malts...minimal foam...visible sediment floats in my glass...very smooth mouth feel...malty body a tease of brown sugars with a muddled citrus finish
3.5Pours with some good carbonation. Was kept well by eclectic! Wood, dry raisins and unsweetened molasses dominate the flavor, with some iron, metallic taste and pencil shavings. Aroma is grainy, malty, old and musty, but in a good way. Nice translucent dark brown in the initial clear pour. Fascinating. Not delicious, but challengingly flavorful. I miss this brewery! (Have I said that a million times...?)
