Heavyweight Biere d´Art

Heavyweight Biere d´Art

A biere de garde or farmhouse beer. It's brewed exclusively with French pale malt and German hops. A long boil develops a deep amber color and malty complexity. A small amount of black pepper in the boil contributes a subtle spiciness. The beer is fermented with a wonderful monastic lager yeast and the finished beer is bottled-conditioned and packaged in 750 ml. corked bottles. The bottle wears a label of beaux art. It features an image of an abstract painting by Canadian artist: Christine Haley.

3.8 Bottle sent to me in a trade from SpringsLicker. Thanks for the incredible generosity. It is that kind of generosity that makes people enjoy this hobby so much! My 7th Biere de Garde Rating...Championship! Beer pours a hazy golden yellow with a nice fizzy head. THe aroma is a mix of sweet bread, cereal grain malts with some spice and a nice citrus profile. Nice light pale malty sweetness followed by a little oxidation that seemed to do this one well. Light citrus, other sweet fruity flavors. Nice carbonation, drank well. Was very enjoyable.
3.8 Bottle, sampled at Woodshop Quad. Pours a hazy amber with a huge bubbly white head. Rich aroma, of malt, caramel, citrus, hops. Big taste, of malt, citrus, honey, pine, and grapefruit. Lingering clean bitter-sweet. Very nice.
3.4 Pours medium amber, fruity, yeasty, funky, spice, honey, bready, tart dry finish.
3.7 Pours decent copper brown with a thin cream colored head. Sweet and fruity with some honey and spice.
3.8 750mL bottle tried at at Woodshop Quad. Amber color. Malty. Easy to drink.
3.5 Courtesy GodOfThunder. Aged about 3 years I would guess. Pours a cloudy, glowing, orange-amber color with a frothy, cream colored head. A soapy wash mostly rejoins the body, though a few spots remain behind to dry. Aromas include a light toffee malt base, with lightly peppery floral hops, musty apples, and dry, bready yeast notes. Flavors show a touch of candy sugar to go along with the toffee, with earthy, peppery hops lending nice balance. Moderate in both body and carbonation, the yeast contributes to the semi-dry finish. This one is pretty nice, and drinks well even at this age.
3.5 Pours a cloudy golden brown. Smell is funky, dusty with some honey in the mix. Taste is of apple fruitiness with some honey and sourness. Light mouthfeel. This held up well.
3.7 Bottle thanks to TheRealBastard. Hazy amber with fluffy white head. Smell is like a sour. Lemon and cider. Tart, sweet, all sorts of things going on in the nose. Nutty on the front of the tongue. Sweet in the mouth, with some spiciness hiding. The bottom of the bottle warmed up the belly.
4.0 Bottle. Obv. awesome art work. Pours an amber body with a white head. Sweet malty aroma with lots of spices, pepper and cinnamon. LIghtly sour finish apple and orange, wonder if some brett stopped by.
4.1 750ml. Pour is hazy amber with tons of foamy off white head. Aromas of sweet malt, fruit, and some citrus. Flavor is sweet, smooth, and has a slight sour in the finish. Another awesome brew from HW.
3.4 750 via trade a ways back this bottle was burried in the back of the cellar, I know I got one from hopdog. This was a mega mega gusher, not super fast but almost non stop even after pouring a generous glass. Pours cloudy orange with a small head. Nose is sweet and vinious which matches a rich matured beer that hold a lot of character, some fruitty sweetness. Its good but not as complex as I’d like.
4.4 4 year old keg at the Earth opening. Thanks Tom! Clear copper with no head. Apple, pear, orange, and citric aroma with some berries, slight dark fruits, acidity, and ginger spiciness. The taste is crazy fruity and funky, with apples, coriander, cloves, spice, acidity, and a pleasant sour finish. Slightly flat, but aside from that, freaking delicious!!
3.8 Capped 750, not sure of vintage. Hazed amber with a nice white head. Initially, a tannic scent dominated the nose, a tad sour, but that dissipated after awhile, becoming far less noticeable. Bready and honeylike notes, spicy flavors. May be a tad past prime, but still delish. Well done!
3.3 Thanks to bitbucket tasting. Cloudy golden w/ big head. A bit dull and musty with bready yeast and citrus/spice.
3.8 750 ml bottle @ liquid sunshine tasting - thanks to riversideak; cloudy orange with thin white head; floral aromas with yeast, orange peels and lemons; aromas on the mild side, but flavors pack and rich and tasty punch; a tasty treat for sure
3.2 In short: A fruity fluffy cake in a bottle. Quite drinkable but probably too old. How: Bottle 750ml, vintage, probably about 2 years old. From dmac, another big thanks to my man Dave! The look: Cloudy golden-orange body topped by a long-lasting small white head In long: Full fluffy body. Doughy yeast with a lot of mangos, some dried bananas, some cheese, some wheat and some green grass. Rather mild. No bitterness whatsoever. An overall sensation of a of a banana cake with a mangos topping. My bottle was lacking “bite” but I suspect it’s more an age problem than a problem with the beer. As it stands it was a sub-par Heavyweight offering, might be a Beer Of Art but it ain’t the art of beer.
3.6 750, capped. Thanks, RiversideAK! Pours cloudy gold with a thick white head. Grassy hops. Starts sweet, but ends with a bit of lemon.
3.6 750, capped. Thanks, RiversideAK! Pours murky orange medium amber. Light but dense tan head. Creamy, grassy sweet nose. Lihgt but still creamy body. Buttery, caramelly mid-palate. Fairly neutral finish.
4.0 Pours a cloudy orange amber color with a thin head. The aroma very pungent it could be the fact that the bottle was brewed in 2004 and it has been aging for a while. It smells a lot like malted wheat with light fruits with hints of honey and citrus hops. The flavor is nice and smooth with a sour initial taste mixed with honey and apricot funk on the palate. I really enjoy the finish being that it is nice and funky yet still refreshing to the tounge and has a lot of flavor that lasts for a while on the side walls of your mouth.
4.0 Pours thick and syrupy to a vibrant, clouded orange hue. Sprucy, sappy, yeasty aroma with dried apple and pineapple, basil, and honey. Synthetic tone of shampoo or other cleaning product permeating. Stinky cheeses and farm air with the warmth. Flavor is lightly bitter with herbs and green spices, and lightly sweet with brown sugar and crusty caramel, never much imposing in any direction but consistently laying back and staying subtle. Soft cardboard tone, soft cedar wood earthiness, and a salient cottony, biscuity texture. Stale apple juice, crisp black pepper, and orange rind in the dry mid palate; mouthfeel is sparkly and fairly dense for the style, though alcohol never suffocates it. Saaz spiciness. Medium to full mouthfeel is dry and sweet with a sugary crunch. Candied nut and fruit sweetness. Finishes with some perfume, cotton candy, and dryness of alcohol. Reveals many layers of complexity throughout; generous and distinctive. Thanks Ty!
3.6 750mL bottle, courtesy of yobdoog. Thanks! Pours a murky, orange-brown color; fizzy khaki head that quickly fades to nothing. Dense, caramel and dried fruits in the aroma; generous malt and yeast character with a slight show of oxidation. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: solid dried caramel, toffee, and complex yeastiness; plenty of creaminess and toffee-tinged malts; any oxidation is well-integrated into a biscuity and toasty malt core; very generous, complex bière de garde with a lot of sweetness. Medium finish, showing plenty of yeast and brown sugar and biscuity notes.
4.0 A store by me had a ton of these until I bought them all. All brown bottles and not one was infected. Very nice flavor and body. Overall complex malts and sweet brown sugar. Some mild hop bitterness and some spices. Easy to drink and very good.
3.4 750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma. Smells of pepper, lager yeast, nuts, caramel, spices, and herbs. Poured copper/orange in color with a huge, rocky, beige head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of tiny particles. Heavily sweet flavor. Tastes malty, with notes of yeast, pepper, spices, caramel, nuts, and honey. A bit metallic. Medium to full body. Tingly, dry texture. Lively carbonation. Sweet, dry finish.
3.9 750 ml bottle shared with fordest. Interesting flacors of malts and spice. Nice sample of a biere de garde.
4.0 750 ml bottle. Lots of carbonation off this murky golden orange brew. Aromas were a bit tart with citrus and other fruits. Flavors were not at all tart. Sweet, and more fruit. Some spice in there too. I liked it a lot. Maybe this is really coming into age.
4.0 Poured hazy yellowish orange with a good size bubbly white head that lasted awhile. Aroma of sour citrus, cinnamon, and candy. Kind of a sour citrus flavor to start with some candy hints. Finished with some spice. Very smooth and drinkable. I wish I had more of this treat. Thanks Cornboy!
3.6 Thanks MikeTD for cracking this rare brew. Murky copper pour, with big white head. Aroma is citrusy and sour. Flavor is caramel bigtime, perfumy and boozy, brown sugar, molasses. Nutty and toffee in the background with just a great creaminess and lots of carbonation still.

3.8 From a 750mL Bottle. Pours the color of naval orange skins, slightly hazy, topped with a healthy layer of off-white head. A refreshing aroma of gentle lemon and crisp wheat acidity is backed by a layer of bready malt and complexified by a restrained leather funk. Medium bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel. The flavors start out with loads of mild garden herbs and build toward a mid-palate apex of crisp biscuity malt. Intriguing how it starts hoppy and then gets increasingly malty as the palate extends. Toward the end, a mild wheat acidity and lactic, runny cheese rind funkiness builds and then takes over, rounding out the flavor profile nicely. Thanks for sharing, Dillon!
3.5 Bottled. Poured a medium sunset orange with a short cap of off-white head and some thicker lacing. Aroma picked up drier bready notes, spicy ligher fruits, and lightly-toasted caramel.. some oxidation is setting in, but enjoyed the mild sherry that it imparted. Flavor had a nice dose of toffee, caramel, and bread at the core.. some lemon tartness and stronger alcohol sugars toward the back-end. Well-carbonated on the palate, but had some sharper alcohol notes that detracted slightly.. all in all felt good. Glad to have tried this!
